Ginger or Mary Ann?

Growing up, I always favored Mary Ann over Ginger. She had a more natural beauty, and she seemed nicer.

by Anonymousreply 30June 5, 2022 7:09 PM

Neither. I wanted the Professor.

by Anonymousreply 1June 4, 2022 4:56 PM

fuck Ginger, marry Mary Ann. Kill Lovey.

by Anonymousreply 2June 4, 2022 4:58 PM

R1 I remember there was an episode where the Professor was having a nightmare, and he woke up in his hammock with his shirt open. My little 7-year self felt all tingly when I saw that.

I was always hoping Mary Ann and the Professor would get together.

[quote]I was always hoping Mary Ann and the Professor would get together.

R3, I always figured if the writers started pairing people off, they would have put the Professor with Ginger (they always seemed to come up with reasons for them to have kissing scenes) and Mary Ann would have paired off with Gilligan (I'm thinking of the episode in which Mrs. Howell tried to marry them off). I also thought it was implied at times that Mary Ann liked Gilligan but he was just too out of touch (or disinterested) to notice.

I wanted to be Ginger and to fuck the Professor.

Mary Ann was boring.

Gilligan was stupid.

The old fat guy was gross.

Lovey and Mr Howell were cool.

If We're playing Fuck, Marry, Kill:

Fuck the Professor; marry Thurston Howell III; kill Gilligan and Skipper.

I never "shipped" any of the characters, but I always wanted the Professor, Ginger and Mary Ann to have a threesome.

To answer OP's question, Mary Ann.

by Anonymousreply 6June 4, 2022 9:20 PM

I prefer Ginger over "and the rest".

by Anonymousreply 7June 4, 2022 10:22 PM

I think the early episodes did seem to have some hints that maybe Gilligan and Mary Ann -- and the Professor and Ginger might have couple potential, but they seemed to have decided against it, which was probably the right decision. Pre-Cheers most sitcoms did not feel they needed a will they or won't they couple. Since Cheers, for every couple that has had genuine chemistry, there have been about three forced pairings that just dragged the show down (Hello Caroline in the City).

by Anonymousreply 8June 5, 2022 2:32 AM

Lovey, of course.

Fun fact: her full name was actually Eunice Wentworth Howell.

by Anonymousreply 9June 5, 2022 2:35 AM

Very insightful post, R8. I would also add Maddie and David from "Moonlighting" to the list of pairings that ended up hurting a show in the end, not helping it.

by Anonymousreply 10June 5, 2022 2:40 AM

Mary Ann

by Anonymousreply 11June 5, 2022 2:42 AM

Nobody sang "You Need Me" better than Eunice Wentworth Howell.

This episode of Hawaiian Eye was on the other night. Interesting to see a pre-Mary Ann Dawn.

Ginger. How is this even a thing.

She had sparkly gowns and tall hair and eyeliner and men falling at her feet.

They were both beautiful women. I just think people have always tended to pick Mary Ann over Ginger because she was the wholesome one.

John Wells did a tour of the Broadway musical and DL fave they’re playing our song

'Lovey' totally represents us pearl-clutching DLers.

by Anonymousreply 17June 5, 2022 5:08 AM

I thought the Howells were hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2022 5:09 AM

Both actresses, really all three were absolutely perfect for their roles.

Natalie Schafer had no interest in doing the show, but did the pilot as a favor to Sherwood Schwartz. It was said she burst into tears when the show got picked up. She was already sixty-five years old when the show started. I do think she ended up liking her role, she seemed to have so much fun with it.

by Anonymousreply 19June 5, 2022 5:10 AM

R9 I thought it was Penelope Wentworth Howell.

by Anonymousreply 20June 5, 2022 11:26 AM

The problem with pairing everybody up was that the Captain would have nobody. But if you believe the Captain and “Little Buddy” Gilligan were a couple, then Mary Ann and Ginger would fight over the Professor, unless Ginger got in her ice queen mode and wouldn’t have sex with the Professor.

Team Ginger

The Howells were the first time in my young childhood that I became aware that not everybody were of the working or middle class . I found their haughtiness fascinating!

by Anonymousreply 22June 5, 2022 12:19 PM

Team Lovey all the way ❤

by Anonymousreply 23June 5, 2022 12:25 PM

Dawn wells not hon of Course

by Anonymousreply 24June 5, 2022 12:47 PM

John not don. Good night

by Anonymousreply 25June 5, 2022 12:47 PM

Few episodes are really focused on characters other than Gilligan, and Lovey and Mary Ann get the fewest star turns, but one of the funniest episodes that does is "Lovey's Secret Admirer" from the wonderful third and final season.

Natalie Schafer is of course brilliant in one of the shows excellent dream sequence episodes as Cinderella, also giving Dawn Wells and Tina Louise the chance to ham it up as the Evil Stepsisters with Skipper as the Stepmother in drag. It's hilarious!

That was a good one. I enjoyed most of the dream sequence episodes because they gave the cast an opportunity to show their comic chops.

by Anonymousreply 27June 5, 2022 5:05 PM

R16, I actually saw that production. First, Dawn looked perfect for the role, very, very similar to Carole Bayer Sager. Second, her acting was just wonderful. You were with Sonia all the way through. Third, her singing was indeed terrible and because so many of her songs were ballads, she couldn't hide it. Afterwards, I wondered why she didn't work at her singing because she had a good career doing theater nationwide but she could have really added to it if she had a better voice.

by Anonymousreply 28June 5, 2022 5:33 PM

R27, I also really enjoyed the dream sequences and the cast seemed to have a good time playing them. I think "The Invasion" was my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 29June 5, 2022 6:33 PM

I always thought that Tina would have been a great replacement for Brendad Ickson. She seemed to be trying to emulate the older Tina anyway.
