Her Fresh Air interview with Dave Davies was really good. Thought it didn't make me want to read the book.

While she's respectful of her father when talking about him, she clearly seems to really dislike him, saying she's not sure if she want any relationship with him. She says that once her dad decided to transition, he wanted to put Bob Tur behind him, he was "dead," and thus Katy never got to talk with him about all the shit Bob did to her and her mom. Basically it sounds like she thinks Bob made it all about him/her and I'm betting Bob/Zoey thinks the exact same thing about Katy. Basically it sounds like they're very similar, thus the animosity. My mom and sister are like that.

The most interesting thing about the interview (and probably her book) wasn't Bob transitioning and the effect it had on Katy's relationship with him. It was the stuff about the Los Angeles News Agency and the whole process of starting it, all the video footage her parents got, all the people her parents met, all the stories they broke. Wild, fast-paced times.

I find it so fascinating that both Tur and his co pilot transitioned. It just seems statistically unlikely.

OP here. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book.

I hadn't realized "Chopper Bob" flew the plane, his wife operated the camera, and his mother was the company bookkeeper. It was a family operation.

Bob/Zoey sounds like a nightmare: violent at home to both Katy and her mother, completely insensitive (he announced his mother's death on the company answering machine before telling Katy; that was how she found out her grandmother was dead), and calling Katy to announce "I'm going to become a woman!" while she was trying to cover the Boston marathon bombing.

It's an interesting read so far. Though I'm sure she won't be providing details of Tony Dokeapil's sizemeat, which would be of keen interest to the DL Book Club.

I really enjoy hearing her speak in the interviews I've listened to. She's interesting to hear speak and she communicates ideas and emotions well. I've known her by name but have never really watched any of her news programs. Didn't know much about her off-air personality

OP again. Apparently Bob came out as Zoey when he was 45 and, Katy says, began hanging out in WeHo, at the Abbey, and making trips to the Castro. He also experimented with drag and even dressed as Britney Spears (at 45????).

When he finally transitioned, he used it as an excuse not to deal with his family abuse because "that person" was dead, and he would accuse Katy of not being supportive if she insisted on it. R32, I honestly get the impression that she applauds his courage to be diplomatic and PC. She's an aware, mature adult who I think understands the implications of being super negative about her trans father as someone who is in the public eye. So she "applauds his courage" or says things like "he'll always be my father" to balance out anything negative she says about him, which she really shouldn't have to do. I really got the impression from listening to her be interviewed for this book that deep down she hates that her father is trans and she really doesn't want a relationship with him - maybe more so for all the shit her did before transitioning, but his transitioning was the final straw to not being able to ever deal with all the other stuff. I listened to the Fresh Air interview. I think it's pretty evident that Katy wanted to have a relationship with her father, but she wanted Zoe to simply discuss what Zoe put Katy through (i.e. the abuse). I think that's pretty fair. I was hit a few times as a kid, one time in particular was done in a very shameful way. Years ago, I sat down with my mother to talk about it. She didn't like hearing it, but she needed to know how it made me feel. And we were able to move on from it. I think that's all Katy wants/wanted.

I think Zoe's reaction to the first sit-down with Katy illustrated that Zoe inherited her anger issues from Bob and they hadn't just magically gone away. It does seem that life as Zoe has made her happier than she was as Bob. But Katy deserves to have her feelings from childhood acknowledged.
