Growing up in the South, our teachers and gym coaches often paddled the male students, especially in junior high and high school. We had to take 2 or 3 licks for just about any infraction. Watching some of the jocks taking it during PE class was definitely a turn on. I can still remember the sight and sound over 20 years later. Anyone else with a similar experience?
I never got paddled in school. My parents did believe in spanking, and I got plenty of that.

We had a few faggy male teachers who would slap our hands with rulers. Nothing too violent. It was more symbolic pantomime.

Yep. It’s sort of hard to believe now, but my southern public school paddled until at least the mid-90s.

No. I started school in 1985. While I heard of it (and heard of it happening), I never witnessed a paddling. It seems to be the kind of thing that was handled in the office behind closed doors. I certainly was never paddled. My teachers (and the lunch ladies, and janitor) all loved me. Of course, I was always the smallest child (even over the girls), and had a geeky, somewhat meek disposition (my how times have changed!).
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 1, 2022 9:51 PM |
Back in the late sixties, everyone knew which teachers paddled the hardest, and those who had a hole drilled into their paddles to increase speed. I was never paddled.
There was a tiny, thin girl in my third-grade class who talked too much, and the female teacher paddled her for it. The girl was hit so hard she had to be taken to the nurse's office, and then the hospital. Her hip bone was shattered. I was shocked the teacher was able to continue teaching. I was too young to know if there were any ramifications for it.

Paddling occurred in 7-9th grade, boys only. The gym and shop teachers had paddles as well as the principal & VP. Very few of the academic teachers had or used paddles. Saw a couple of guys get it bare ass for snapping towels in the shower. We also swam naked so a couple of guys got paddled bare ass for horsing around in the pool. The hardest I witnessed was two guys in gym class got caught throwing tennis shoes at a guy on the trampoline. The teacher who was 6'7" and well over 300 pounds lit into those two with three hard swats. One left the gym crying. Their asses were almost purple when the took their shower. The one VP was known to reach for the paddle quite often and he usually gave three swats. I never got paddled but saw quite a few. This was the 60's.

They didn't have paddling in my school district in Washington State, but in elementary school during the 80's a few of the teachers would give a swat of the hand to the butt if you were acting out. I got a swat once from my 5th grade teacher for telling her to shut up. She told my parents, who made me go get a switch when I got home, and whipped the hell out my ass. Afterwards my mom made me write an apology letter to the teacher. That was my first, and last time being a little shit at school
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 2, 2022 4:56 AM |
I got paddled in 1st grade for sliding down the snowy hill next to our school. I landed right at the principal's feet, lol. All the students lined up in the hallway to watch the daily swattings. When they phoned my mom to tell her I'd be getting my ass beat, she refused to give permission for them to pull down my pants, assuming they meant my jeans. They were talking about my snowpants, so I barely felt the swats. I thought I was a badass for being the first girl to get swats that year. It was a point of pride for us to do something rebellious and be punished.
Where I lived, paddling was common all the way through high school. They were still beating asses when I graduated in 1987.

I was at RA (Royal Ambassadors) camp when I was 12 down in Alabama. One time they had us boys strip down and stand on a wooden palette together so our counselors could give us a "shower". The palette was only big enough for the 20 of us to stand on it with barely any wiggle room. Then the other boys started to play around and bump into each other a bit. I was SO scared someone would notice my boner, but I couldn't help it. Naked boys kept bumping into me while these dilfs were hosing me down and laughing.

I went to private school in the south beginning in 1959 all the way to graduation. Paddling, or any other physical punishment, was strictly forbidden. Although there was one incident in 10th grade gym class. The gym coach was also a vice principal and one of the tennis coaches. He fancied himself a badass. On one day a group of boys were huddled together in the lower bleachers while the rest of us were running laps around the gym. Teach had told the guys to get off the bleachers and get running repeatedly but they had not budged. He became so frustrated with them he walked up to them, pulled his belt out of the loops and started swinging at them. They scattered like roaches. But after it was all over a couple of the guys had big red welts on their legs. The next day their parents came to school and had it out with the principal and the teacher. My mother heard from one of the mothers that they threatened to sue the school and the gym coach if he wasn't terminated. The gym coach was suspended that day and fired by the end of the week.

I grew up in the South and graduated in the late 80s from a private school. Paddling was still a thing. One teacher I had in elementary and middle school was famous for her paddling-it was never very hard, but her paddle was actually named “Betsy” and it was a “thing” to get paddled because then you’d get a chance to sign your name to it.
So fucking weird when I think about it now.

I graduated high school in the South in 2002, I know in elementary school paddling was still allowed. But, the parents had to sign a permission slip when they registered you. My parents never did. I got my spankings at home. The Principal was the one who did the paddling and he did it behind the closed doors of his office and he had to have another adult in the room to witness. It seems to have died out during my years in school, I think fewer and fewer parents would sign the slips so eventually they banned it.

I went to school in the North of England in the early seventies. My school was like something out of a Dickens novel. Some teaches loved to inflict violence at any opportunity. Kids got beat for having unmatching socks in Gym class. I got whacked for not getting my sums correct. To this day I still think it is why i have anxiety over maths. I moved to the states but returned for one year in high school. Once the teacher signaled me out for talking in class. I was dragged from my desk to the front of the class by a lock of my hair. I couldn't help it I shoved the teacher pretty hard at which point he sent me to the Headmaster for a proper beating. The headmaster sat me down and said i'm not going to beat you because you're a Yank and already ruined.

Complaining to the principal did nothing. We made a pact with the whole class to put tacks on her chair. She screamed when she sat down and we Saw a trickle of Blood run down her leg as she hobbled her way to the nurses office. The principal tried to bully us to eat out who did it but no one squealed. I'm 59. I went to a parochial grammar school and an All=Boys Jesuit high school in the Northeast. Never experienced physical discipline. In grammar school, I had a lay teacher in first grade, who threatened to paddle unruly kids, but never did. I had two nuns in second and seventh grade as homeroom teachers. They were lovely women. In seventh grade, you'd have to write an essay about why what you did was wrong. There were one or two lay teachers who should never have been near children. They were nasty, bitter, and angry women who would say nasty and even cruel things to children.
In high school, we had JUG..."Justice Under God." If you were late for school or class, the teacher would snd you to the Assistant Headmaster's Office. There, you would receive a punishment, like sweeping the cafeteria floor after school. For bigger offenses, they would mete out something likeminded but increase the length. You could be subject to expulsion for stuff like getting caught drinking or smoking pot.

I had a friend who had a potty mouth. I never heard him swear at home until one day when we were 11 years old he swore at his mother. His father was in hearing range and came around the corner. "what did I tell you about that mouth?" he grabbed him pulled down his pants, put him over his knee and spanked him a good 5 times.
The second time was when we were in 8th grade. He swore at another kid and the teacher heard. He grabbed his paddle and gave my friend two hard swats. I saw his ass in the shower at the end of class and it was quite rosy. Paddling was common in my school.

In my elementary school kids would dread being sent to the principal because he was rumored to have an "electric paddle." Not until I was a bigger kid did I realize it was supposed to deliver an electric shock. My dumbass kid brain pictured a wooden chair featuring several mechanical arms with Mickey Mouse gloves holding paddles and swinging them at blazing speed. Too many cartoons.

The closest I came to getting spanked at school was in 4th grade (10 years old) when I thought Jill had stolen my EraserMate pen and I grabbed and scratched her to get it back.
She told Mr. Roberts, who took BOTH of us into the teachers' lounge with the paddle. I felt like I was dangling over a pit of fire as he asked her "Do you think he deserves to get a spanking for what happened?" I remember looking pitifully into her eyes because I was terrified, not for fear of the pain of the spanking as much as the stain I knew it would leave on my SOUL.
She didn't answer immediately, but she did answer "no" and I was so grateful.
At the time, I believed it when she said she had a similar EraserMate, but now that I think back, maybe it was really mine, after all.

"We need this to happen" "I think it would be a great idea" "I feel like it should be brought back" "Let's get spanked, it would be better for the community" "It should be strike 3 and you get spanked" "Start using the paddle we need it too badly" "It's a pretty good idea if classmates misbehaved, they'd get 'spanked.'" "It would be a great idea, having the spanking law in school for misbehavior" "I would really appreciate if a teacher would spank me if I had a behavioral mistake"

Paddling is a thing in the South because it's a region built on violence and slavery. It's a legacy of it. Beat your children, women and slaves into submission even to death and then tell them God loves them and everything is fine. Trauma bonding. Why do you think Southerners smile all the time and try to make others feel happy all time? It's all a cultural tradition born out of fear of violent retaliation. It's feudalistic. And it just builds complacency and fear of individuality and intellectual curiosity. And reinforced violence is okay in handling matters rather than discussion. Why do think Southerners love guns so much? They operate on fear and punishment and believe they're constantly at risk of something. I say this as someone who was beaten too as a kid for punishment.

Back in the 60's when I grew up, paddling was common. It was pretty effective. It deterred most guys from behaving badly. Others would get paddled and that ended their bad behavior. There was a small group of guys that it didn't work on. They were frequently paddled and either didn't care or were just bad to the bone. Today behavior in schools has deteriorated and maybe brining back the paddle would help.

My Boomer mother had the stuffing beaten out of her by her psychotic drunk parents, and it broke her for life. She's passive, codependent, and someone who believes taking a beating is a form of love. Her siblings - who were also abused - are now all drug addicts or alcoholics with criminal records and a dark view of the world around them. She never hit her own kids, and we grew up to be sober, healthy, educated adults who are breaking the cycle of white trash violence in our gene pool.
Children need rules, boundaries, and consequences. But no child needs violence.
People who'll solve a minor problem by hitting a child are often quite willing to solve bigger problems that way, too. Savages.
