by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 1, 2022 4:15 PM |
I love this book. It’s very fanficton admittedly but I really enjoyed it. Admittedly, I’m a big Young Royals fan & back in the day I loved Princess Diaries. Love me a bit of royal fairytale nonesense 😂 I thought I hadn’t seen either of these actors but actually, I have seen Handsome Devil. The casting looks promising..
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 1, 2022 4:35 PM |
The YA books was considered a bestseller.
There is a scene in the Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler movie "Big Business" where the bumpkin duo has to pretend to be the rich business tycoon duo. Their only frame of reference for how business and board rooms work is Dynasty. This was funny because it was so obviously NOT how the world actually worked and the idea that board rooms worked like they did on TV was laughable.
Now, this is how the majority of shows and books, especially YA novels, think the world actually works. Their only frame of reference is other poorly conceived media.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 1, 2022 4:41 PM |
Both look too old to play 21 year-olds. They should've gone with Sebastian Croft who is 20 and already looks princely.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 1, 2022 5:13 PM |
The book was okay. If we hadn't been à la pandémie, I might not have finished it. But we were on lockdown, so I did. I don't remember it well enough to recall whether I pictured any particular actors. It would have been smart for them to hire Young Cal and Young Derek from Euphoria.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 1, 2022 5:26 PM |
The book was cute. Escapist fluff though I do appreciate the author's research. She got a lot of details right about things like Washington, the White House, the British monarchy, etc. that other authors would brush aside.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 1, 2022 5:42 PM |
Are you the "Bash" troll, r25, the DL'er who has started 6 or 7 threads dedicated to Sebastian Croft? I am as attracted to him as some of you are to Tim O'Tay. The day we stop having Sebastian Croft threads cannot come too soon. He's more Artful Dodger to me than Princeling of anywhere.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 1, 2022 5:46 PM |
R29 Not the poster but what's wrong with Sebastian? There are many far more annoying threads on DL than his. A handful of posters gossip about him because he's in a glass closet, much like DL was about Connor Jessup a while back.
I liked Nicholas Galitzine in Handsome Devil - Heartstopper reminds me of it funnily enough.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 1, 2022 6:07 PM |
Does Nicholas descend from the fabulous dearly departed Princess Galitzine featured in MAHOGANY?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 1, 2022 6:12 PM |
The do look far too old to be playing 21 year olds. The guy playing Alex in particular. Kinda of a shame really as it felt like we were moving away from us having to suspend belief that 30 year olds are teens/young 20’s. But both are quite attractive, if they have the chemistry then they’ll make an attractive pair. Maybe they felt the need to cast slightly older actors to make the sex scenes less like watching youngsters having sex!
I see some outrage that Alex is too white? I never read him as super dark skinned. He’s half Mexican right? So not white obviously but I think this actor is probably about right?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 1, 2022 6:48 PM |
Uma doesn't get cast in nearly enough things.
I like her. She was fantastic in Gattaca and Kill Bill.
They ought to cast her more often.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 2, 2022 6:49 PM |
The image of Uma as Poison Ivy from Batman & Robin is etched into my memory from childhood. The movie is bad, but I didn’t know that back then lol
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 2, 2022 7:45 PM |
Nick is quite sexy on screen but it would take good couple chemistry to make this movie work. It's like a gay rom com, which means you get all the cliches of meeting, fighting, kissing, splitting, and reuniting. The book was just okay like a more polished fanfic.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 2, 2022 8:11 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 10, 2022 8:18 PM |
Nicholas is cute/pretty handsome. Taylor is kind of sexy. This sounds like a horrible show. I read the Wikipedia description of the book on which it is based, and I see there is a trans woman Secret Services agent and a pan White House staffer. Oy.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 10, 2022 8:34 PM |
I think they are both really handsome in their own ways! And for me, very well cast, do agree maybe a bit older than the books but makes no difference to the story so who cares.. really don’t get peoples upset in their casting. Maybe it’s cos I’m in my 30’s & I’d rather watch people more towards my age than two 20 year olds!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 10, 2022 8:42 PM |
R40 I read the book and I can't even recall any of those representation characters. They are just background characters who don't really get any development. They are just there to push the gay love story plot along.

Connor Jessup [italic]was[/italic] really close friends with screenwriter Matthew Lopez who will make his directorial debut with Red, White & Royal Blue.
They hung out in London in late October (with Sebastian Croft and Joe Locke) and liked each other's social media posts up until December. Now Connor, Sebastian and Joe have unfollowed Matthew who in turn has unfollowed them... what drama went down?

Yeah, this has all the trappings of an attempted hookup gone bad.
Even witht he Me Too, revealing you were offered a sexual quid pro quo is still dicey for the career. I can see where they may have offered Cimino the lead role in Red White and Royal Blue, but made it contingent.
I saw Taylor Zakhar Perez in The Kissing Booth movies (sue me, I find the predictable story beats of rom coms somewhat soothing). He was fine, but reads too old for this role. Cimino would have been better. Actually, the meta of casting Cimino for this and casting George Sear (who is British) in the Prince Henry role would have been hilarious.

It's kind of cute seeing all the young Hollywood gays desperately butter up to this Matthew Lopez guy wrote this. Also that Adam Silvera who did several others. And now all these books are getting film adaptations. It's so obvious they're all vying for roles in these upcoming YA gay projects.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 19, 2022 12:59 PM |
If you follow publishing, Adam Silvera's YA books have been hitting the "best of" lists for the past few years.
No idea if they're any good, but they seem to have cornered the market on gay latino teen protagonists (no surprise). Several of his books are getting adaptations, or so it seems.
I will say that the premise of one of his books, They Both Die at the End, intrigued me - and seems like the ending DL didn't know it needed.
[quote]On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 19, 2022 1:05 PM |
R54 makes me think that this role might have been why Andrew Matarazzo made his little rant the other day about his friends not reciprocally supporting him. I don’t know if he has ties to either the director or either glass closeted actor. But there’s no way he didn’t seek an audition for this.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 19, 2022 1:33 PM |

[quote][R55], that sounds patently awful.
How can you possibly say that the ending of a story where they tell you upfront that BOTH main characters die is awful.
It's the stuff of DL legend - it's the story someone wrote after reading the DL classic, "and then they died" that is used in so many threads.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 19, 2022 3:16 PM |
r59, I was talking about the story as a whole. "Death-Cast"? "End Day"? An app called "Last Friend"?
Puke.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 19, 2022 5:28 PM |
I love the casting for this. I had them in my head as grown adults around my age (26) so for me, they work just fine. I know they are meant to be a bit younger but to me, they are written like older adults. Taylor’s got a lot of criticism but I don’t get it. I really see his character through the screen without even seeing him act. Confident, charismatic, really kind looking face. And I think he’ll play well against Nick. They look good together, they look a similar age. Nick is bang on. He’s the handsome prince Britain wishes it had.
Do we know who is playing who yet in the rest of the class?
I guess that’s perils of books into films. We all see them differently. Worked out for me this time!

I got Uma. I couldn’t work out who was June. I assume the girl from This Is Us is Nora? Who is Polo Morin playing? Luna?
I hope they don’t make this film for an under 18 audience. I fear it gets put into the HS category of books & will go really tame. The book isn’t shy about them having sex, in fact it’s a biggish part of their story. I don’t need major sex scenes but I hope they don’t back off entirely. It’d be nice to see a realistic take on a gay relationship.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 19, 2022 6:25 PM |
Stephen Fry has also been cast. What character will he play? The Republican who is Alex's mother's opponent in the election?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 19, 2022 6:28 PM |
Obviously, the Queen of England.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 19, 2022 6:32 PM |
Maybe? I’d not be convinced he could carry an American accent plausibly. Stephen Fry has never really impressed me acting. I was hoping his part was fairly minor. There aren’t many British parts I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 19, 2022 6:34 PM |
That would be funny. The Queen Mary character is a real bitch in the book.

I know asking if actors are gay is not the done thing these days but I always remain curious. Authentic queer casting on this one? As is often the done thing these days..

Cool. Thanks. Not hugely surprised neither of them are out, if they are gay. Taylor strikes me as the classic good looking one cast for all the girls to fancy onscreen.. quite an out there choice to go for a very gay role (well bi but a gay relationship being portrayed).. but it comes with a built in fanbase & will be popular.

Who is Polo Morin playing? Raf? Also, Taylor Perez is too tall and old to play Alex. The Prince Henry character is supposed to be older and taller than Alex.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 20, 2022 9:32 AM |
Taylor is just fine. He & Nick look very similar ages & they look really good together. I am a genuine mega fan of the book but happily accept the film will have notable differences. The actors may not be exactly as written, taller, hair colour, eye colour etc. The story will differ in places too, that’s how book adaptions work. And that’s OK so long as the overall story is faithful & the actors do a great job. Presumably, Taylor & Nick had decent chemistry in their auditions & impressed.
No-one is sure on Polo. Luna is the obvious choice but not sure why he is in London if so. Unless they are filming internal scenes in London studios perhaps. I’ve seen Philip floated about but surely not?!
