There used to be a blog called "Trans Widow" that was a woman telling the story of her ex-husband's transition. They were happy for years together, but when the "trans fever" (my term) got him, he became more and more miserable and depressed, crying all the time and being deeply unhappy with himself (and cruelly selfish to her). Transitioning didn't help; it just got worse, and they later divorced. He was so angry at her all the time for, supposedly, not supporting him enough, no matter how much she put up with. (She was eventually the only one earning money.)

It's as if, when this business gets hold of someone, it so often turns them into a desperately unhappy, angry person who thinks the world is wrong--killing them! We see this in all those angry "don't misgender me!" articles and viral videos. And, like the Trans Widow's ex-husband and E. Page, they start retconning their own history to show that they've always been terribly unhappy and it's because they were trans and the world felt unsafe to them. I don't know what psychological vulnerability it is that the trans fad taps into in some people, but it acts like a virus, same as QAnon and "everything is fake news" ideologies.

Younger trans identifying people who spent much of their early life immersed in online communities often seem to be on the autism spectrum or otherwise appear to have developmental difficulties. I can understand the appeal for a young person with autism since it gives them a sort of prefab identity along with a degree of social credit, which is probably the first time in their lives that they have felt affirmed and accepted by their peers.
