Why didn’t HIV spread significantly among straights in the West?

While straights were the majority of HIV infected in Africa and Asia, in the West, it never spread much among straights.

Why

by Anonymousreply 84June 5, 2022 5:14 AM

In addition to Westerners regular use of condoms even before AIDS? Primarily because vaginal intercourse does not carry as much risk as anal since the vagina is actually designed to receive a penis. The anus is not and eventually tiny rips in the tissue occur and allow the virus in.

by Anonymousreply 1June 1, 2022 2:14 AM

circumcision.

by Anonymousreply 2June 1, 2022 2:17 AM
While straights were the majority of HIV infected in Africa and Asia

Who knows if they were really all "straight" in those countries.

Straights in the west don't fuck as much as they put out that they are fucking. Maybe once or twice a week, and long dry spells between for kids, work commitments, time out from relationships, whatever.

Unlike gays. Or so I hear.

by Anonymousreply 6June 1, 2022 2:23 AM

Because they avoid have sex with bisexual people.

by Anonymousreply 7June 1, 2022 2:28 AM

OP, Western men don’t eat monkey meat - the source of HIV. Or at least not to the degree that Africans do. IV drug users weren’t and aren’t the norm, this would be the primary method by which straight (Western) men would pick it up and pass it on to women.

by Anonymousreply 8June 1, 2022 3:13 AM

Is "monkey meat" a euphemism?

by Anonymousreply 9June 1, 2022 3:15 AM

R9 For what would it be a euphemism?

by Anonymousreply 10June 1, 2022 3:17 AM

R10 I'm sorry. I'm here reading all this craziness and laughing so hard I'm crying. Nursing cats on airplanes, monkey meat, Lia Thomas as a handsome woman, the evil black chick in Obi Wan Kenobi being called the Third Sister. I can't think straight anymore. I don't know. A euphemism for man parts?

by Anonymousreply 11June 1, 2022 3:21 AM

I think it means cooking and eating monkeys.

Straights never used condoms before HIV (they worried more about pregnancy so women used the pill). Even now, I doubt straights use condoms that much

by Anonymousreply 14June 1, 2022 2:11 PM
circumcision.

I thought that might be a factor BUT, the truth is circumcision doesn't actually prevent transmission all that much and Europeans don't circumcise but have low HIV rates in straights.

by Anonymousreply 15June 1, 2022 2:12 PM

Are African men bisexual as frequently as black Americans?

by Anonymousreply 16June 1, 2022 2:17 PM

Straights used condoms more after WWII, because soldiers were given "pros" to help quell the spread of STDs and became familiar with them. Apparently by the 1950s, condom vending machines were common. Somewhat off topic, I'm sure, but interesting, so I thought I'd post it.

I have two female friends in their 30s. Neither one uses condoms and they fuck around regularly. One of them fucks her ex boyfriend (who is now married) and lets him cum inside her, hoping she will get pregnant and raise the kid alone.

People love to act like gay men are sex freaks but straight people are just as crazy AND they breed children.

by Anonymousreply 18June 1, 2022 2:58 PM

Could it be because bisexuality is not so frequent in white men. I think bisexuals were the one spreading Aids on women. Aren't the dl black men the ones who infested black women in US. I have no idea about Africans though.

by Anonymousreply 19June 1, 2022 3:13 PM

Why Aids hit the gay community in the western world so hard is easy.

Aids entered the US with all likelihood through gay men. Could have just as well been throught straight men but chance had it be the former. And since gay men dont usually have sex with women or straight men, it was easier for it to be confined to that group initially.

That and the fact that transmission is easier during gay sex (well, if you bottom anyway) than straight sex, even for straight women (who were usually less promiscious and more selective than gay men at that time and who in turn are much less likely to transmit it to others.

The more interesting question is why in Africa its much more of a heterosexual disease but you'd have to be more acquainted with the lifestyle and culture there. I suspect the amount of prostitution brought on by poverty is a big cause.

by Anonymousreply 20June 1, 2022 3:14 PM

R19 bisexual men could and did spread it to women, however unlike their gay male counterparts, the women were much less likely to transmit it to someone else

by Anonymousreply 21June 1, 2022 3:19 PM

Easy. A lot of people are saying it was because god doesn’t like the gays, and he also doesn’t like the blacks.

by Anonymousreply 22June 1, 2022 3:19 PM

But women did spread it, because how could otherwise all these allegedly men could be infested. I don't believe all these men were bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 23June 1, 2022 3:26 PM

R23 alot of unprotected sex in poor areas with a high prevalence of prostitution?

by Anonymousreply 24June 1, 2022 3:31 PM

The risk of transmission of HIV from a woman to a man is normally very low. However, that risk increases significantly if the woman has ulcers from untreated syphilis. Untreated STIs have been very common in much of Africa.

by Anonymousreply 25June 1, 2022 3:39 PM

Straights have their own crosses to bear; fibromyalgia for the women, sexless marriages for the men : (

by Anonymousreply 26June 1, 2022 3:59 PM

It spread mainly in non-American breeders because of poor health of foreigners. Std's, vaginal sores, prostitution, etc.

by Anonymousreply 27June 1, 2022 4:05 PM

Hey, American supremacist at R27, it didn't spread among European heterosexuals. It did spread among straight population (African American) in US though.

by Anonymousreply 28June 1, 2022 4:11 PM

In Africa the traditional circumcision ceremonies actually spread HIV because they use the same blade to cut everyone. To confuse things further, stupid American groups are going in there brainwashing them into thinking that circumcision will protect them against HIV.

by Anonymousreply 29June 1, 2022 4:20 PM

R27, actual figures for these claims?

It would have spread in the straight community if straight men had unprotected anal sex with gay men (as a bottom) and then had unprotected anal sex (as the top). Butt sex was the main sexual conduit.

by Anonymousreply 33June 1, 2022 4:32 PM

The circumsicion argument is absolutely idiotic considering the spread is the same if not less in Europe and Latin America which is for the most part, uncut

by Anonymousreply 34June 1, 2022 4:34 PM
The circumsicion argument is absolutely idiotic

Yes, the WHO, the CDC, the UN and the NIH are all ridiculous in advising that circumcision can help stop the spread of HIV.

It's not like they have any doctors or scientists on staff.

by Anonymousreply 35June 1, 2022 4:43 PM

r32 the funding is coming from America. The idea that circumcision prevents HIV first came from Edgar Schoen, a notorious circumcision fetishist who had once been head of the AAP and created pro circumcision policies as the rest of the Western world was dropping the practice. When they first started those studies they literally said that their goal was to prove a 50% reduction in HIV. Once they had rigged the study to get the results they wanted they ended the study, not following up to see if any of the men got HIV later on.

by Anonymousreply 36June 1, 2022 4:48 PM

HIV/AID$ is a hoax/$cam brought to you by the same psycopaths who brought you covid. Neither exists, btw.

They asked some Amish people why there is no covid in their community. "Because we have no television"! was the reply. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

by Anonymousreply 40June 1, 2022 4:55 PM

I believe it was primarily because the first person to get HIV was a gay man who never had sex with heterosexual men. And most of the men he spread the virus to were probably 100% homosexual themselves. Ultimately the virus spread into the bi-sexual community but I don't believe it spread nearly as fast there and into the hetero community because transmission from men to women is not as easy through penis/vagina or oral sex as it was with penis/anal sex.

I base that on nothing more than my own personal beliefs, and I have no scientific data to back any of it up.

by Anonymousreply 41June 1, 2022 5:00 PM

Girlies, you still believe in the myth that only bottoming is risky. It might be riskier, but topping is risky too, as the virus can be found in bowel secretions and blood cells and can enter the penis through head and urethra.

by Anonymousreply 42June 1, 2022 5:02 PM

Are we just completely ignoring what happened in Haiti?

by Anonymousreply 43June 1, 2022 5:03 PM

It does have to do with sexual practices in whatever part of the world we are talking about, but it very much has to do with circumcision. This is a known fact. I'm sorry that a lot of uncircumcised guys don't want to believe it, but it is a FACT.

by Anonymousreply 44June 1, 2022 5:04 PM

R18 your misogynists tirade is not even germaine to the discussion.

So you know one woman that fucks her ex hoping to have a baby. What does that have to do with spreading AIDS? How many other partners does she have, how frequently and what kinds of sex do they have. Does she use protection with others? How many partners do each of her partners have, and what are the details of their activities?

Straights fuck around. But I would bet anything it's a lot less frequently than gays or bisexuals.

by Anonymousreply 45June 1, 2022 5:04 PM

r44 the association is not clear at all. If you look at a map of HIV prevalence in the world, HIV is low in areas that don't circumcise, with the exception of Russia, probably due to drug use. Of course it's also low in the Middle East where they're all circumcised. There's parts of Africa where the circumcision rate and HIV rate are both high. The people that did those studies deliberately chose a country where the uncut men had higher rates of HIV. They knew what they were doing. This is clearly an ego trip from circumcised men in positions of power trying to prove that their dick is superior. At the expense of African men's lives.

by Anonymousreply 46June 1, 2022 5:33 PM

R14, I think for people who didn’t get it in the US vs other countries, the difference is really about condom use in high volume sex situations. Abroad it was unprotected sex with prostitutes that spread it. But in the US there were huge condom use campaigns for the prevention of venereal disease before AIDS. Syphilis remains a problem too.

by Anonymousreply 48June 1, 2022 6:02 PM

Men who were infected in prison would bring HIV to their girlfriends/wives at home

by Anonymousreply 49June 1, 2022 6:03 PM

R5 in fairness, Reba did a gutsy thing in acknowledging AIDS at that time. Especially in the world of country music. I will love her forever just because of that. AIDS can kill anybody. It isn’t some punishment for being gay like the MTGs of the world want the public to believe.

by Anonymousreply 50June 1, 2022 6:10 PM

They call it bush meat not monkey meat. people didn't get aids from eating bush meat, they got it from catching monkeys and getting bitten by them or just encroaching on monkeys' habitat and getting bitten. This has been mainly how humans get these animal diseases. stomach acid would kill HIV but getting bitten will pass it on. I knew a guy whose boyfriend had aids and they got into a huge fight and the guy who had HIV purposely bit him. He got Aids from the bite. He bit off a huge chunk of skin from the poor guy's face.

by Anonymousreply 51June 1, 2022 6:13 PM

A lot of stereotyping and bad information. The circulating subtypes are/were different in different parts of the world and some subtypes like Thai E are more easily transmitted from women to men than others (e.g., Type B which dominates in North America. Regional variation also is affected by things like background prevalence of other infectious disease: STIs, viral hepatitis, TB.

by Anonymousreply 52June 1, 2022 6:23 PM

^^^ Also cooking bushmeat and handling the bloody carcus with a cut on your hand and getting the blood into the cut is also how they got AIDS.

Basically if I can interject Reba into the conversation, I do it.

by Anonymousreply 56June 2, 2022 4:07 AM

Why was AIDS more predominant in gays ? Maybe AIDS in straights was underreported just like Covid deaths probably were higher than the million reported in the US … Not trying to minimize the nightmare of seeing many gay friends die and the initial phobic ignorance from the straight community. With science we are learning new things all the time about viruses, so maybe we will find out the answer in hindsight.

by Anonymousreply 57June 2, 2022 4:39 AM
Why was AIDS more predominant in gays ?

Because gays have a vastly higher rate of multiple concurrent sex partners.

by Anonymousreply 58June 2, 2022 11:32 AM

After the pill and before the time when you couldn't just rely on a prescription clearing up whatever you might have caught while fucking around (so approx. 1960s-1980s), I doubt many straight people were using condoms very regularly. No adults I know ever talked about such things, nor had them in their homes nor carried any. Maybe the men had one old disused one in his wallet in case he picked up some strange on the side from someone highly questionable, but that very likely would have been about avoiding impregnating someone.

That only became a common habit after the campaigns about AIDS and the worry about catching it among straight people rose. Even then, men of my personal acquaintance weren't carrying them, putting the onus on women (again) to be both supplier and enforcer (thus "a drag" to mess around with).

by Anonymousreply 59June 2, 2022 12:37 PM

Women don't prefer anal sex.

by Anonymousreply 60June 2, 2022 1:15 PM

Even when they want to avoid pregnancy?

by Anonymousreply 61June 2, 2022 1:17 PM

Over the past few decades anal sex has become fairly common and mainstream among straight Western people, for various reasons. Therefore shouldn't the rates have exploded along with the rise of anal sex, if anal sex was the main reason it spread among gays and bisexuals?

by Anonymousreply 62June 2, 2022 2:31 PM

Hard to believe that straights practice anal much. They are so grossed by it when talking about gay relationship (not to my face, but when I read comments of forums and comment sections on web sites).

by Anonymousreply 63June 2, 2022 2:47 PM

Women don't have prostate glands so it mostly just hurts and makes us shit weird for days.

by Anonymousreply 64June 2, 2022 2:52 PM

R63 They act grossed out by it but it has become common, you can raw dog her without worrying about pregnancy, if she wants to "maintain her virginity" it always her to, and if her vag has become too loose her ass hasn't. The girls in my high school at the turn of this century were all doing anal, because they didn't want babies nor abortions.

But, from the straight guys I've known, straight women treat anal much like oral. They do it regularly until you put the ring on her finger. Then it is something you might get once or twice a year, if you have been a good boy.

by Anonymousreply 65June 2, 2022 2:58 PM

Most guys are scared to hell of knocking up the woman, so they used condoms. The thought of getting HIV wasn't that much of a concern to them.

by Anonymousreply 66June 2, 2022 3:08 PM

R62, it might have, but HIV never really crossed over to the straight community, for the reason noted above: in the West, women very rarely, if ever, transmitted the virus to men. Actual straight men were not infected through sex, so it didn’t matter how much anal sex was going on.

by Anonymousreply 67June 2, 2022 3:08 PM

Men in Africa would have sex with infected prostitutes in urban areas and bring it back to their wives in their villages. Also, men would make women douche with bleach for a dry fuck, which led to higher rates of transmission.

by Anonymousreply 68June 4, 2022 4:45 PM

That's complete and utter bullshit, R68

by Anonymousreply 69June 4, 2022 4:54 PM

Whether gay men like it or not, vaginal sex is not as risky as anal. The vagina is designed (for lack of a better word) to be penetrated. The anus and rectum aren't and do tear easily. Then, of course, there are condoms which straight people tend to use while gay men don't.

by Anonymousreply 70June 4, 2022 4:57 PM

One of the questions is how many straight people are living with HIV? I don't routinely talk about sex lives with straight friends (or gay, for that matter) but I remember being totally shocked when a straight friend who's closer to 40 than thirty told me he'd never been tested for HIV. And being surprised when a friend told me her daughter was being fitted for an IUD. They just don't think it's a real risk for them, in part because it was a "gay disease" when it first broke out, I'd guess.

by Anonymousreply 71June 4, 2022 5:00 PM

Sorry, key omission in my very first sentence:

One of the questions is how many straight people are living with HIV, but [italic]undiagnosed[/italic]?

by Anonymousreply 72June 4, 2022 5:01 PM

R1 not quite. Studies have shown the anus, with repeated exposure can pass on the infection. The original idea was that it was because of tearing and blood exposure but it has been shown repeated exposure without any signs of trauma would pass the disease. Most straight people do not practice regular anal sex, there for the exposure risk was lower.

R71, in Britain there are now more new HIV cases diagnosed in heterosexuals than in gay and bisexual men. This is apparently due to improved early testing and the use of PrEP by gay men.

by Anonymousreply 74June 4, 2022 5:28 PM

My guess? Blood and tears in skin are the main culprits in the transmission of HIV (not the only- but the main). Consensual straight sex doesn't normally result in either. Rape does. I am guessing that the rate of straight rape (probably all rape) is higher in those areas.
