Meta Researcher Raped in Virtual Space

I am very confused by this. Couldn't he have just logged out?

Zuckerberg has wasted $10 billion. Women don’t feel comfortable on this and if women don’t go, only a small subset of guys will.

by Anonymousreply 1May 31, 2022 7:36 PM

A tip: call it "r-worded" if you want to monetize this post!

by Anonymousreply 2May 31, 2022 8:12 PM

You wrote a misleading headline, and then argued against the headline you wrote, knowing it wasn't even describing what actually happened.
A researcher's avatar was sexually assaulted on a metaverse platform owned by Meta, making her the latest victim of sexual abuse on Meta's platforms, watchdog says
A researcher entered the metaverse wanting to study users' behavior on Meta's social-networking platform Horizon World. But within an hour after she donned her Oculus virtual-reality headset, she says, her avatar was raped in the virtual space.
"One part of my brain was like WTF is happening, the other part was like this isn't a real body, and another part was like, this is important research," she said in the report.
SumOfUs researchers also reported experiencing homophobic and racial slurs in Horizon World and said they witnessed gun violence on the platform.
Four other users also recently said their avatars were sexually assaulted or harassed in Horizon World and other Meta VR platforms, according to the SumOfUs report.
But the next month, a metaverse researcher named Nina Jane Patel said in a post on Medium that within 60 seconds after she joined Horizon Worlds, three to four male-looking avatars gang-raped her avatar.

Seems to be a genuine problem, and not the fault of researchers who should have just logged off.

by Anonymousreply 3May 31, 2022 8:22 PM

Was it virtual rape rape?

by Anonymousreply 4May 31, 2022 8:33 PM

It was unintentional, R3. Yes, it should have been "she". I'm still recovering from the weekend and didn't notice. Apologies.

by Anonymousreply 5May 31, 2022 8:37 PM

Can like the avatars actually commit rape? Is that a thing?

by Anonymousreply 6May 31, 2022 9:19 PM
Seems to be a genuine problem, and not the fault of researchers who should have just logged off.

Couldn't the virtual rapist just not virtually rape someone? Her job was to conduct research. If her virtual character (avatar?) is getting assaulted by others in the metaverse every time she's on the platform, that's an issue -- ditto for the people encountering homophobic and racial slurs. If everyone who isn't a straight white conservative male should just expect to be treated this way on their platform or piss off, Meta's metaverse platform [bold]will[/bold] fail and they [bold]will[/bold] lose users to competitors.

by Anonymousreply 7June 1, 2022 4:15 AM

Since it's just avatars, why didn't she rape him back?

by Anonymousreply 8June 1, 2022 4:18 AM

Oh shit, avatar Me too starts now!

by Anonymousreply 9June 1, 2022 5:05 AM

I'm advising all female avatars to carry a virtual AK-47 and a donkey dick under their virtual skirts. And no lube.

by Anonymousreply 10June 1, 2022 10:19 AM

Do they offer virtual male on male gangbangs?

Just asking for friend. I don't condone violence, of course.

by Anonymousreply 11June 1, 2022 10:25 AM

I want pics

by Anonymousreply 12June 1, 2022 10:27 AM

Wow, talk about diminishing of the word rape.

by Anonymousreply 13June 1, 2022 10:29 AM

Laser tag

by Anonymousreply 14June 1, 2022 10:31 AM

I don't understand this whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 15June 1, 2022 10:31 AM

I like some of the comments in OP's link:
Does this imply that there will be a virtual police investigation, a virtual arrest, a virtual trial and being sent to virtual prison?

by Anonymousreply 16June 1, 2022 10:33 AM

Just another day in the disintegration of America.

by Anonymousreply 17June 1, 2022 10:33 AM

I wonder if the researchers were told not to log out if something went wrong. It would be similar to people hired to go through moderation queues, you can't just say no, I'm not going to look at that dead body or that CP, because it's your job to look at them and moderate them. It's insane, though, normal humans can't properly deal with that kind of content on an extended basis without risking mental health issues as a result.

by Anonymousreply 18June 1, 2022 10:33 AM

This isn’t rape. People get harassed online all the time. You can choose to log off. And I agree that this meta thing is a huge mess and WHO DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING? People commit rape in real life so why wouldn’t more do it anonymously behind a keyboard?

by Anonymousreply 19June 1, 2022 10:37 AM
This isn’t rape. People get harassed online all the time. You can choose to log off.

by Anonymousreply 20June 1, 2022 10:40 AM

Let me guess: the “victims” were all white straight women

by Anonymousreply 21June 1, 2022 10:45 AM

Invasive Robotic Surgery??

by Anonymousreply 22June 1, 2022 10:56 AM

^ We should have known those pigs would drop the “non”

by Anonymousreply 23June 1, 2022 10:57 AM

Cyberape or Cyberrape?

by Anonymousreply 24June 1, 2022 11:00 AM

Men just can't control themselves.

by Anonymousreply 25June 1, 2022 11:00 AM

This is inadvertent marketing for the concept of virtual bodies. If we take this seriously as rape, we invest in the whole Meta concept. Agree that people shouldn’t harass each other online and ignore this.

by Anonymousreply 26June 1, 2022 11:10 AM

I have an Oculus and porn is shocking on it. You are seeing through the eyes of the victim. In virtual reality, I was the passive bottom and you can see this man mount you. If you have ever had this experience you will know what I mean. Sensory overload kicks in and it can go either way, good or bad. It really is intense and I had to rip the thing off my head and take some breaths. It was scary.

by Anonymousreply 27June 1, 2022 11:21 AM

They weren’t even wearing virtual condoms! And now, if she gets virtually pregnant, she can’t even get a virtual abortion, thank you very much Virtual Supreme Court!

by Anonymousreply 28June 1, 2022 11:24 AM

What was she 0110100110ing?

by Anonymousreply 29June 1, 2022 11:26 AM

You just recruited a1,000 Dataloungers to Oculus, R27.

by Anonymousreply 30June 1, 2022 11:30 AM

I just knew those Robots 🤖 would eventually get the upper hand

by Anonymousreply 31June 1, 2022 11:33 AM

R27: MARY!

by Anonymousreply 32June 1, 2022 11:34 AM

And she was almost home!!!

by Anonymousreply 33June 1, 2022 11:37 AM

Virtual reality is one step away from 'Total Recall'. Insanity is next.

People do not seem to understand that even today, at it's very root, the threat of violence is all that holds civilization together.

by Anonymousreply 35June 1, 2022 11:44 AM

^^ Fear keeps people in order, sorta.

by Anonymousreply 36June 1, 2022 11:47 AM

I got gangbanged in a chatroom on gay.com way sometime in the late 20th century.

by Anonymousreply 37June 1, 2022 11:49 AM

I used to run a brothel in Smallworlds. My jacuzzis were covered in jizz!

by Anonymousreply 38June 1, 2022 11:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 40June 1, 2022 12:07 PM

Ah, incels.

by Anonymousreply 41June 1, 2022 12:12 PM

While my avatar got raped in the Metaverse, she dissociated herself from the assault by calling on her own female warrior avatar named Tarava.

by Anonymousreply 42June 1, 2022 12:51 PM

NOPE. I REFUSE to allow this into MY life. I'll keep (insert pronoun here) lifted up in prayer.

by Anonymousreply 43June 1, 2022 1:02 PM

Better that these freaks are staying indoors and not going outside hunting for real victims, at least.

by Anonymousreply 44June 1, 2022 1:18 PM

So women are now being raped in their imaginations?

by Anonymousreply 45June 1, 2022 5:40 PM

As usual r45

by Anonymousreply 46June 1, 2022 5:42 PM

Back in the day there was a Village Voice story on a similar incident:

R44 Just give it a few years and better technology and nobody will know the difference.

by Anonymousreply 50June 1, 2022 8:00 PM

I don't understand why a platform would allow that kind of interaction at all? Why isn't there a way to avoid that? I know it's not being taken seriously but it does suck that an entire platform is going to be off limits to certain groups because of harassment. Half the internet is already ruined because shitty people have dominated spaces. Online spaces need to work this out -- is there going to be rules about engagement or not? If not, expect the shittiest people to take over. The racists, homophobes, sexual predators, etc., Which will ruin it for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 51June 1, 2022 9:28 PM

Was she virtually impregnanted? Will she have to virtually carry to term her virtual baby in Samuel Alito's America now?

by Anonymousreply 52June 1, 2022 9:30 PM

Geezus, who gives a fuck about virtual rape?

by Anonymousreply 53June 1, 2022 9:33 PM

Did her avatar resemble Charlie Chaplin by any chance?

by Anonymousreply 54June 1, 2022 9:37 PM
My jacuzzis were covered in jizz!

So they were jizzcuzzis?

by Anonymousreply 55June 1, 2022 10:34 PM

0/0=OP.

by Anonymousreply 56June 1, 2022 10:49 PM

OP didn't write the story, R56.
