Give any straight man some power and they'll do the same. Hell, that's why they want power in the first place!
And that's the difference between gay men and straight men. Gay men can't delude themselves into thinking that if they ever get rich or powerful enough, all men will be attracted to them. But straight men can and do convince themselves that if they rise high enough, all women will become their toys.

This guy has HORRIBLE taste in women.
He sounds like a creepy asshole.
He didn’t abuse these girls, but he did befriend them specifically for the power imbalances involved.
Why else would any guy hit on any of these women, especially women who aren’t particularly attractive, but are REALLY young? For power. That’s it.
He could date almost anyone he chooses to date. He can hire the most stunning escorts out there. He can date women his own age or a bit younger who are gorgeous, accomplished, and who have their own money. But instead, he goes for girls that look like they’ve ordinarily plain college students, who have yet to accomplish much because they’re really young. And he’s lazy AF, because he uses his sets to meet them.
He sounds like a fucking idiot who needs to grow up and put away his tattoo poke and stick.
A successful woman with her shit together would not put up with that skateboard tattoo nonsense and would probably dump him on the spot if he suggested something so ludicrous.
He is tight. He has zero game.
I’m wondering if he has penis problems, because a good looking man with a robust career has no problem finding an accomplished, beautiful girlfriend in Hollywood.
And I’m not trying to shade these girls because of their looks. Not everyone is gonna look like a supermodel, but c’mon! These girls look like they’re still in high school.
What a fucking idiot. He kinda deserves the embarrassment this article brings.

The accusations are that he abused his power to date women he worked with. In an industry known for the casting couch, with a history of women being coerced into sex just to get jobs, that's a problem.
I know that even the people like r8 who call the women ugly and unhinged understand this concept. They're just angry that a man has been accused.

Dude has a problem, obviously. Used his power as A-list director and producer to get it on with younger women on his sets. Icky, not criminal.
Not sure what will happen to him or what should happen to him. Why can't these younger women learn how to navigate these situations better, not trust so easily and know not to hop into bed or a relationship with these types of men? You don't date or get with your much-older boss, not during a project and probably not afterward either. These women had, and continue to have, agency and choice.
I don't like Fukunaga's games but the continued infantilization of young women is equally disturbing imo.

I'm so sick of this bullshit. In a gay blog, no less. As. If.
Men will do what males do. They are built to spread their seed and procreate, and they will pursue as many young, fertile women as they can. And if they have power and looks, as he does, they will use that to carry their mission. It's nature and it's fucking inevitable. They can't help it if they try.

They just "felt icky." Shut the fuck up, cunt! You knew what you were doing!

"Why can't these younger women learn how to navigate these situations better, not trust so easily and know not to hop into bed or a relationship with these types of men?"
Uh, because they're YOUNG? Too young to know their rights, or what's appropriate workplace behavior, or even what they might be able to get out of offering a top film director some young pussy.
He probably wanted them precisely because they were too gormless to know how to "navigate these situations" or play the games straight men and women play, or too young to know how to say "no" to an authority figure.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 1, 2022 5:54 AM |
Clearly he's done and NTTK was a failure, so this is how he'll be shivved by the industry. It is pretty lame as far as accusations go- "old director manipulates young dumb women! Why, I never!"
I respect the litigiousness of today's young ladies. They can't fathom an older man using them for sex, but they lawyer up immediately when he doesn't call back.

Well how YOUNG were they? Over 18, over 20? They weren't 14, 15 years old (which would be criminal behavior)...they were in every sense grown women. Younger grown women, but grown-up all the same and working on film sets as competent adults. BS that they don't know or can't recognize "appropriate workplace behavior", or couldn't 'say no' to an authority figure.
He's still in the wrong here no question. But again, the continued infantilization of young working/dating women is not helping these situations. You don't feel comfortable with someone, say no. Get out of an uncomfortable relationship. Walk away, ghost him/her. Don't date or sleep with your boss or manager, unless you're prepared to deal with potential unpleasant fallout (those thing never end well). Simple rules of life.

I'm all for men unlearning toxic, manipulating behavior, but then the women have to do the same. They've been conditioned to be emotionally manipulative. I can understand an uproar against power indifferences and/or someone grooming a young girl, but when we're talking about women in their 20s....and guys like Aziz A and Jake G.....it's sad that these grown women suddenly crumble and become helpless in the face of a situation not going exactly how they wanted.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 3, 2022 12:15 AM |
In agree that while his behavior is creepy, he has so far been accused of nothing illegal. These young women are just parroting everydayfeminism / reddit themes: "Oh, he's gaslighting me... of, he was grooming me... etc, etc."
When you're an adult, you have to take responsibility for your choices. These women want to infantilize themselves and pretend they're victims because they had sex with someone powerful who later didn't want them.

Some of you are stuck in the 80's, my God.
The man is being called out for using and abusing people, of course he's going to eventually be exposed. He had relationships with very young women who lacked the experience to know he was emotionally abusive, and now that they are older and wiser, they are using social media to expose him. Why should they stay quiet when they don't have to? People are done with this shit. Nobody is protecting his abusive ass. People can protect their reputation by acting responsibly and with integrity, maybe Cary should try that from now on?

r106: you quote r97 but state they are asking young women to "stay quiet", when they did no such thing. Young women, such as those in this case, who feel used or manipulated by older, more powerful males should shout their stories to the skies. As is their right.
The question is, why weren't they shouting from the earliest moment they knew the manipulation began? Nearly all of them admitted they felt skeeved out, early on. LOUD, and tell it to their abuser/user's face while they're at it, while they kick him out the door.
The point here is minor disagreement with the concept of "very young women who lacked experience to know". Over-18, over-21 is not categorized for some as "very young". They are adults. And some of them admitted that they well knew they were mutually engaging in an inappropriate, or at the least weird, interaction w/Fukunaga.
Of course he's the primary problem here, if he behaved better we wouldn't be talking about him. But to spare themselves pain or upset, there's nothing inappropriate with asking young women to be stronger in these situations, to take better care of whom they end up in romantic settings with and better control of how things unroll in them. We are all captains of our own ships, despite efforts to somehow disenfranchise groups of people from this reality.

I read the comments from the young women and read/listened to their posts and stories on Instagram. What Rachelle Vinberg shared is that she didn't know enough about herself or relationships to know how she was being manipulated and groomed. Even when things seemed strange and uncomfortable, she explained them away. It was with distance and therapy that she began to realize how she was harmed by Cary Fukunaga. She is a more mature young woman now, and can speak with clarity about what occurred in her relationship with him.
Typically, the rational part of our brains develop by age 25, sometimes a little earlier, sometimes a little later. It's typical of young adults under 25 to not make good decisions or they lack good critical thinking skills. If you are an adult man of Cary Fukunaga's age, and you mistreat a person under 25, you should expect that, sooner or later, the young person you mistreated will mature and they may react negatively, and some won't be forgiving. In these cases, the older adult bears almost all of the responsibility.
[quote]there's nothing inappropriate with asking young women to be stronger in these situations, to take better care of whom they end up in romantic settings with and better control of how things unroll in them.
People tend to over correct younger people, especially women, about what they should or shouldn't do to protect themselves. I get it, it's easier to scold and lecture the victim than to call out the perpetrator. Maybe we feel we have more success lecturing the victim than taking on the abuser? But it's good to remember that many victims stay quiet because they feel ashamed about not protecting themselves better or leaving a bad situation or simply for not defending themselves. This is what abusers want, it keeps them from ever facing the consequences of their actions.
In any case, these young women acknowledge they made mistakes, but also place the blame squarely on the shoulders of the man who harmed them, as they should. They are using their voice to educate others about how you can be groomed and manipulated as an adult. Why is this a bad thing? I thank them for speaking out and educating people on emotional abuse and how to spot an abusive person or situation, whether in the workplace or in your personal life. And that victims are not alone and do have support.

Look we learned long ago it isn't about sex, it's about power. Most of the time when these women come forward, they're rather plain looking, not raving beauties. Look at that woman who sued Prince Andrew. It's a lot easier to groom and flatter a plain Jane than it is a raving beauty. Cary is a Director. Directors are always on a power trip. Many of them are contol freaks with personality disorders.

Either adult women are adults and responsible for their behavior or they are poor, pathetic helpless lil' creatures, seduced and abandoned. Fuck them. They're out to make a buck.

"The question is, why weren't they shouting from the earliest moment they knew the manipulation began?"
Ever tried shouting at your boss when he or she behaved inappropriately? How did it go?
Please tell us about the time you shouted at your boss when they were being a shit! Especially if your boss was a power in a small industry that's very hard to crack, an industry where everybody knows everybody, and everybody thought your boss was hot shit and wanted to do him little favors, like refusing to employ the peon who'd shouted at him.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | June 12, 2022 12:10 AM |
Please r113, this is getting ridiculous. Of course I wouldn't normally shout at my boss, certainly not on the job or at the office.
But if he's in my BEDROOM, messing with my mind or stability or generally screwing me over, I would damn well feel far more comfortable shouting at him. Or at the least, strongly telling him my thoughts and feelings about our personal/sexual relationship, in that setting.
If my boss was a "power in a small industry that's hard to crack", and I'm trying to build a career there, and I also feel the desire to sleep or have sex with him or her, should I act on that feeling or impulse, knowing what kind of high risk I was taking on my future? Should I not KNOW that things might not end well, that it could be a gamble I could lose out on? If I'm an adult of course, well out of high school.
Of course I would know. It's called choices.

R114 These young women (and man, Nick Cuse), made the mistake of trusting this man when they shouldn't have, and are owning up to that mistake, learning from it, and warning others. How about we hold Cary Fukunaga to the same strict standard you hold for his accusers? He's a foolish, immature, abusive, 44 year old pathetic dumbass. He gets zero sympathy from me.

Many women aren’t cut out to work outside the home. They don’t know how to work with men. They fall right back into that looking fit a daddy figure routine the minute they fuck up. Men and women didn’t work side by side for centuries. That is why you hear so many of these stories. They simply cannot work together.

When you're pretty, jealous people tell lies about you. And if you reject someone who is not pretty themselves they can be so vicious. The pretty ones pay a price for their beauty.

by Anonymous | reply 119 | June 12, 2022 3:49 PM |
{sigh} r115. I'm not holding the accusers to a stricter standard. I'm all over this thread stating my disgust at Fuck-up-naga and expressing zero sympathy for his self-created predicament. I support the accusers voicing their truth, for justice and for warning/deterrence sake (see r107).
I'm not going to apologize for stating I also want young women (and men) to be more aware, better socially trained and educated about the age-old risks of sleeping with their bosses and superiors, in any industry or setting. And the negative situations and personal harm that can result. To suss out predatory asses like Fukunaga early on, to avoid pain and grief and to perhaps (if enough negative feedback is received) cause assholes like him to re-evaluate their stupid game plan.
Harms abound everywhere, and I'm not going to stop warning my younger, less experienced loved ones of their presence and risk and how to manage them.

ok...."victim..."
by Anonymous | reply 121 | June 12, 2022 4:23 PM |
Oh for fuck's sake, R114, R120, Ralloverthisfucking thread, it's not about the victims! There's no magic way for someone under pressure by a real asshole to handle the situation well, if you're offered a choice between fucking a creep or kissing your career goodbye, there are no good options and that's all there is to it! There's no magical female way to "handle" these guys, no way to get him to back off without being offended, and with the real creeps, no way to say "no" or try to impose boundaries without losing your fucking job and having to start over.
The victims can't make the situation better, because the abuser has deliberately created a situation where there is no "better" for the victim, no good options, no way out, just godawful options whatever they do. And that's why it's so important to get these assholes fired or jailed, because there is literally no other way to stop them from ruining people's lives.

I'm the type of person who tells the abuser to fuck off, not the abused to toughen up. There's plenty of people like you around to do the latter.

Look R120, all of us here are gay, beautiful and not fat so we don’t have to worry about our minds or anything else being fucked by Cary Fukaga. (Whom I agree isn’t much more than a commercials director.)
You seem to be wasting a lot of breath here trying to earn your self-righteous, protector of the young and stupid bonafides. Not sure why.
I just think it’s funny that these days, everyone thinks sex should just be beautiful and satisfying like a dream… lol
Sometimes sex is regrettable. That’s part of the experience, the chance you take. And there is power with sex on both sides of the equation. It’s just odd that people think something so primal has changed. Women use the prospect of sex for power all the time and it’s usually when things don’t go their way that it becomes a problem. The only way to learn is to take full responsibility for your own behaviour. The time to call out your boss is when they make a sexual advance on you - that’s an abuse of power - not after you’ve gone to a hotel room with them, etc. That just sounds like somebody trying to benefit from somebody’s interest in them. There’s a big difference. In the second scenario, they’re both players.
