Mary McGregor -- Feminist Icon, or Selfish, Indecisive Ho?

Would it have killed her to wear a bra?

This song reminds me of some of my Colored gentlemen friends.

[quote]"There's just this empty place inside of me that only he can fill."

Gurl got some big ol' nipples

by Anonymousreply 4May 30, 2022 11:02 PM

I wonder what Charlene of "Never Been to Me" fame would've said to Mary?

When Lee Remick was "Torn Between Two Lovers"

I thought you were talking about the character in Maggie Smith's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

When that song came out, my sister was a senior in high school and I was an 8th grader. She had two on-again, off-again boyfriends. So whenever we were alone and others couldn't hear, I'd start singing or whistling "Torn Between Two Lovers" when I'd walk past her. It made her SO angry at me. 45 years later, I can mention it and piss her off. Fun times.

It is sort of the same genre, isn't it R5? 70s hos confessing their unhappiness.

Would be camp except they're both good songs, musically.

^ George Prepard looked as if he had a teeny weeny peenie, like my late husband Ike.

I'd have preferred to see a strong Colored man in one of those roles...like Ossie Davis...he reminded me of my Roscoe.

The song was co-written by Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary fame), inspired by the film Doctor Zhivago; he just flipped the sexes (in the movie, it's a man in love with two women).

"Torn Between Two Lovers" needy a speaking part...like "Never Been to Me" to push it over the top....

[quote]It's a lie

[quote]A fantasy we created about people and places

[quote]As we like them to be

Yeah, if "Torn Between Two Lovers" had a speaking part or a higher camp factor...

I think it'd get more Drag Queen coverage...

Yeah, that song was no "I Am Woman"

It was a big hit back in the day

but it didn't become the kind feminist anthem they were hoping to create

Miss Jean Brodie worn ALL her proper women's foundation garments!

by Anonymousreply 18May 30, 2022 11:23 PM

She could've sold that song better if she'd had bigger titties.

by Anonymousreply 19May 30, 2022 11:58 PM

Dolly, r19, did you know that "Torn Between Two Lovers" was also a hit on country radio? It peaked at #3 on the country chart.

by Anonymousreply 20May 31, 2022 12:05 AM

^ She'd have a hard time getting one lover with those little A cuppers.
