I think there was competition from 'not-as-hot, but-actually-talented' women like Samantha Morton, Helena Bonham Carter, Kelly McDonald, Gina McKee, Minnie Driver, Emily Mortimer, Saffron Burrows, Olivia Williams, Sadie Frost, Shirley Henderson, and later Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley (not to mention bigger stars like Kate Winslet, and all the Aussie actresses who got British roles). Most of these actresses had more auteur director appeal than Beckinsale. She wasn't getting the Trainspottings or Wonderlands or Morvern Callars.

She seemed to make a conscious decision to move to L.A, completely transform her look into full-blown Hollywood bimbo, and only take on mainstream blockbuster projects like Underworld, Van Helsing, Vacancy 1 & 2, and that shitty Adam Sandler one.
