Cruise could be the public face of the KKK and a child abuser and MILLIONS would still pay to see his movies, support and defend and even worship him and why? because it's all about them being entertained for 2 hours by him and his movies! You could tell people what he is and involved in and they don't want to know and/or don't care to know!...

We watched Top Gun on Netflix last night.

They were all celebrating on Breitbart saying: "Masculine, Pro-American ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Blasts to $146M Opening, Towers over Woke Flops" and:
[quote]The ageless star [Cruise] is in full control of his film destiny, and he clearly helped “Maverick” avoid most, if not all, of the culture war booby traps. No hand wringing over military might or extended emasculation of its rugged hero, for starters. No lectures on America’s imperfect past or gender inequality. And, suffice to say, “Top Gun: Maverick” isn’t woke in the slightest. It is, though, a testament to American excellence and the ability to achieve a goal no matter the odds.
They were all aghast and celebrating UNTIL...someone mentioned that Dr. Strange (a film they decried as "woke garbage" a few weeks ago) made more its opening weekend.

But for a movie that opened on the most screens ever, shouldn't the gross have been double that? Didn't the last Spiderman take in over $300 million its first weekend, just before Christmas?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 29, 2022 6:56 PM |
As much as I hate Tom Cruise as a person, he sure has good instincts when it comes to the films he chooses to do. Currently, he’s the sole actor in Hollywood who manages to do franchise films that get subsequently better with each new release (Mission: Impossible, and now Top Gun). Kudos, you crazy son of a Thetan.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 29, 2022 6:57 PM |
I thought it was good, not great. The flight sequences are impressive, and the finale is well done. The middle drags when you go a stretch without any flying. Val Kilmer's cameo is sad, but it's nice he was included.

He's doing a 2-part Mission Impossible film next, to be released in summer 2023 and 2024. It's interesting how Hollywood is now splitting big films into 2 separate movies so they can give audiences an epic experience. Dune, Wicked and Mission Impossible are the first films to do it this way. I look forward to it.

[quote]People desperately want to go back to the eighties or nineties right now. I expect more reboots like this.
I imagine that is how many people probably felt in 1922, after a world war (1914-1918) and a global pandemic (1918-1920). Not to mention all of the social changes that took place in that same period. Women got the vote, ditched theirs corsets/long skirts, and began bobbing their hair, wearing makeup, and smoking in public. Some people probably felt like the world was going to hell in a wastebasket. Also, in the U.S., Prohibition was the law of the land into the early 1930s.
I'm 42 and many people around my age are nostalgic for their youth in the 1990s, before social media/smartphones. I'm sure there were many people my age back then who yearned for the simplicity 1890s, before cars, before silent films, before WWI, before the Spanish Flu.

I believe Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games did that ten years ago to the last book in their respective series.
Also, the Hobbit was split into three movies.

As r63 says, this is not new. Harry Potter and Hunger Games did that.
The Divergent Series, which featured Teller, TRIED to do that and the last film in the series was such a flop they canceled the last film, so even the fans of the films didn't get proper closure.
It's still a risk. I think Mission Impossible can pull it off, though. I agree that the films get better and better.

R70 for some reason, I am reminded of the time when Brody Jenner had a reality show over ten years ago where men across America competed to be his new best friend or something.
Anyway, one of the contestants, was a femme gay who ended up being a wet blanket, because he was upset that Lauren Conrad was not going to be there. He was a huge fan of THE HILLS (with Brody & Lauren) and had envisioned being her new gay bestie, going shopping and gossiping. He left after a day or two, because he said that wasn't what he signed up for. I was like, "Fool! You're surrounded by a bunch of hot guys. Who cares about some chick?" 😂

Last week they were predicting a boffo $80 million dollar weekend, and the reality will be almost double that.
That is the indicator they are excited about as much as the numbers themselves. It shows presence of an audience of moviegoers who'll come out and see a movie other than MCU retreads.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 29, 2022 9:13 PM |
The woke stuff has to end. West Side Story probably bombed harder than it would have because of it. I’ve been catching up on TV shows lately and the stunt casting is more obvious than ever. I also think if movies stop going directly to streaming services, people will go back to the theaters. I miss movies with storylines. The comic book ones are too much. One thing though, movie tickets and refreshment prices are out of control. It’s $25 per ticket just to see this in IMAX.
As for Maverick’s popularity, it’s nostalgic, TC is still super famous and, much to the dismay of DL, this country is still mostly patriotic. So, it’s really no surprise it’s a blockbuster.

[R80] I saw it last night and I surprisingly really liked it. I never even saw the first one but supposedly the new one is even better. It's has more appeal for people than just patriotic folk. Hard to believe that this movie was sitting in the can for three years because of the pandemic. Lady Gaga wrote the musical score and the theme song that plays at the end.
Saw it in LA at the Grove and the audience applauded at the end. Also people were singing the Gaga theme song on the way out. I guess the Little Monsters were out! Overall I recommend it and I have never been a Tom Cruise fan.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 29, 2022 9:27 PM |
One thing streaming can't provide that theaters can and that's the big screen and big sound of blockbusters. That's why they always have to have a lot of action and special effects. Give people what they can't get at home

There is absolutely nothing about Top Gun Maverick that hasn’t been found in theaters every summer.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 29, 2022 10:10 PM |
R85 He certainly is.
Quigley's Publishing, which used to release an annual list of Top 10 bankable movie stars from the 1910s to 2013, had Tom Cruise THIRD for most times ranked in the Top 10 (20). After John Wayne (25) and Clint Eastwood (21).
And FIRST for most ranked at #1 (7)). Bing Crosby (5), Eastwood (5), Burt Reynolds (5), and Tom Hanks (5) were tied for #2; Shirley Temple (4), John Wayne (4), and Doris Day (4) were tied for #3.
Cruise has continued to have smash hits since Quigley's stopped keeping tabs a decade ago, so he no doubt would have surpassed Crosby and Eastwood for most times in the Top 10, And possibly gotten more shots at #1, too.

It is pretty amazing that Tom Cruise is still a huge box office draw (The Mummy aside). His contemporaries from the '80s were Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sly Stallone, Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner and Eddie Murphy. Arnie, Sly and Mel do a lot of straight-to-video garbage. Kevin is still popular due to Yellowstone, and I'm sure Eddie could have another big hit but he seems indifferent or lazy.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 29, 2022 10:58 PM |
Arnold hasn’t done a single straight to video movie.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 29, 2022 11:11 PM |
R91, I don’t consider those actors are contemporaries to Cruise. Pitt, Depp and Reeves and Cage are more. Some are still popular, but don’t think they have his box office draw.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | May 29, 2022 11:13 PM |
I agree with R91. Cruise, Arnie, Sly, Kevin, Mel and Eddie were all huge in the '80s. Pitt, Depp and Keanu didn't really become stars until the '90s (Pitt was made by his appearance in Thelma & Louise, which came out in 1991).
by Anonymous | reply 94 | May 29, 2022 11:51 PM |

Jingoistic, rather. Which is why American Sniper likewise "surpassed all box office expectations", despite being full of misleading Pentagonian lies.

Johnny Depp didn't become a box office draw until the early 2000s, with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean, which also garnered him his first Oscar nomination.
Throughout the '90s, he was mainly known as an 'indie darling' who eschewed big budget blockbusters and had no box office clout.

I'm glad the cast is entirely American. The way Hollywood movies should be. Hopefully, this is a return to form.
The UK (67 million), Canada (38 million), Australia (25 million), and Ireland (5 million) have film/TV industries relative to their small populations. Not to mention that their cumulative populations don't equal half of the US population (330 million), so it's pointless for Hollywood to look for talent there (when we have so much here), especially to play American characters/icons, which is irritating more and more people.

R112.. I believe cruise drinks only rarely socially and has never smoked...
THE REALITY is folks, he does NOT look all that good for his age! He is lucky to have a "boyish" face, dyed hair, and any kind of facial treatments money can buy. The truth is take away any or all of this and yes, he looks 60... NO ONE notices the crow's feet and lines under his eyes smiling or not? the forehead lines? the wrinkling neck?...
My older brother who is 58, ONLY 2 years younger than cruise, looks way way younger than cruise does. He literally doesn't have any forehead lines, no crow's feet unless he smiles really big and not a line on his neck! He has never smoked, drank, stayed out in the sun, exercises and eats well for decades...
Just saying..

John Travolta is the more important figure in Hollywood history. He alone created 3 major cultural moments with Saturday Night Fever, Urban Cowboy and Grease. I can't think of another actor who has had so much cultural influence than Travolta. Cruise had big success with Top Gun and Risky Business, but they didn't have the same cultural impact. Same with DiCaprio and Titanic.
I don't know why Travolta doesn't get more respect in Hollywood considering his historic contributions.

But Travolta is not Cruise.

R121, I would argue SNF still does. It’s classic and JT is a legend. However, TC has has no dips in a nearly 4 decades long career. He’s goes from strength to strength. It’s quite incredible. It’s sad though because that era is coming to a close. 36 years from now there won’t be any superstar or sequel that anyone will be lining up to see.
Read this in RS and it’s spot on.
Time has not been kind to Top Gun. Time has been extremely kind to its star, however, and if the movie is nostalgic for anything, it’s for an era when he wasn’t the only guy who could pull off something like this — when “movie stars” didn’t fall somewhere between black rhinos and Tasmanian tigers on the endangered species list. Cruise didn’t need to make this; he already has another Mission: Impossible movie coming down the pike. The fact that the movie works as well as it does is because Tom Cruise singlehandedly makes it work as well it does, “simply” by doubling down on everything that’s made him a star (charisma, commitment, an unholy dedication to can-go-ness, screen-acting chops, those choppers), is almost enough to make you a believer again. It’s such an abundant showcase for one final stab at movie stardom in its natural habitat that for a second, you can forget about years of bad press, evil churches, failed marriages, couch-jumping, Mummy-hunting. You just see a supernova reminding you why he’s larger than life, before the whole galaxy built around such constellations burns out entirely.

Cruise is REALLY TALENTED at making pabulum for the international markets. He knows exactly the jazzy milquetoast entertainments that please some movie fans in every country.

by Anonymous | reply 127 | May 30, 2022 8:22 PM |
[R113] I agree with him not looking that great. When he first appears on screen ( he filmed a clip where he actually addresses the audience and thanks you for coming) it is kind of shocking to see how old he is. In most people's minds they think of the young Cruise from 36 years ago. He actually looks like a 60 year old man. He IS in great shape physically but his face gives his age away. However he did not look at all bloated like that pic someone posted. For this movie everyone had to be in tip top shape before filming including Cruise.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | May 30, 2022 8:23 PM |
I'd like to take a moment to address those who haven't seen the original "Top Gun." Val Kilmer is really sexy in it and there is a homoerotic subtext between him and Tom Cruise which is just not even remotely subtle in any way at all. Check it out kids.
I might see this. I might not. But maybe it'll usher in less comic book movies by now. I hope it does.
Tom Cruise has always been quite the disciplined force to be reckoned with. He's stayed focused and gone the distance without a doubt. It's a shame he became a $cieno. If only Mimi Rodgers was an Episcopalian or something, you know.
Hopefully Suri is alright. It must be surreal as heck for her to see her dad everywhere right now. I have a feeling he let her go when Katie Holmes and her dad bravely did what they had to do to get the heck out of dodge. Perhaps she's in therapy? It's just must be far out to her to have the dad she hasn't seen in ages just positively everywhere. She looks like him well enough.

Here's a list of movies released in theaters in 2022 so far. How many of them are comic book movies? Four? Five?
Marvel/Disney will release four or five a year. WB probably two or three. Sony? Maybe two.
I just don't get why DL harps on them as if they're the only movies available. Go see Downton Abbey if you like. It's still playing.

[quote] "Are people really back at movie theaters like that? I’m blown away. I thought most people waited for stuff to come to streaming these days."
I like the idea of getting back into a theater, but it sure as hell wouldn't be for a Tom Cruise flick. The last time I saw him in a film in a theater, it was "Magnolia". He was good, but not nearly as good as many liked to say he was. And frankly, he was my least favorite part of the film.
With streaming, many folks don't have four or five services. And now that there are many different services (they seem to be growing all the time), companies are releasing content on their own, because they can. So juxtaposing that with the fact that there's a lull in Covid/Covid is less prominent, folks are headed back to the movie theater. As a costumer, I myself am grateful folks are back seeing live theatre.

I'm surprised that people are surprised at the success of Top Gun: Maverick.
People want to go out and do things after two years of pandemic, and movies are a popular outing. This is an action movie - always a popular genre - that is not a fucking comic book movie. It harks back to a time that many people today regard with great nostalgia and apparently (I haven't seen it yet) lacks the painfully forced and unpopular political biases that many movies have nowadays. It stars an actor who is still very big box office in the sort of role he was born to play.
Why would it not be popular?

by Anonymous | reply 156 | June 1, 2022 12:27 AM |
I also agree with r155. It's just a straight up entertaining action movie with no woke messaging or casting decisions that take you right out of the story (no trans POC fighter pilot). It's a movie that is what it is - entertainment for the masses that isn't a comic book movie or a lecture. That's what people want to see. Hollywood should take note.
BTW the thing about the Marvel movies is that they all follow a continuous storyline so you can't just watch a random Marvel movie without having seen the previous 500 Marvel movies to know WTF is going on.

I loved it!
Not a Cruise sycophant, but I loved that Kilmer is in the movie & the big effort mad to make him look & SOUND so good. Whether Cruise championed this or not, I love he keeps hitting on it. He really is 'Bigging" Kilmer up. And Kilmer needs it. Trying to watch the documentary Val was so sad. Had to do it piecemeal. Sad. Cancer has so ravaged him. Whether Tom was the force behind Making Val look so good in this or not, it happened & I love it all the more for this. Its so easy to cry & moan & rend your clothes after someone is dead & gone to make you look good. To help them when they are alive, ill & need a hand is so much more human. Val looked like a million bucks in the film. Loved it even more for this.
Will probably go again with some friends. The flight scenes are amazing!

Real question. Will Hollywood wake up and consider what "middle America" wants in its escapist fare? Celebs don't matter as much as the type of movies associated with their brand. The real stars are the techies who create realistic action scenes.
They're already shooting off fireworks in Vegas. Kids are anticipating celebrating the 4th without mask restrictions just as they held barbecues on Memorial Day. That's the nostalgia TB represents.

HOWEVER, NOW tell me though, which ones were the public face of a evil organization that has and continues to abuse THOUSANDS??!!
Cruise knows the truth and turns a blind eye to it all, meanwhile at the same time DOCUMENTED utterly improper, inappropriate, plainly unethical wrong BUTT KISSED by the same organization 24/7 for over 3 decades! AND he bans anyone, anywhere, anytime from even ASKING him the questions that should be asked and answers DEMANDED since it's we the public who made him in the first place and continue to do so!....
He made the leader of this evil thing his best friend (what religious leader has a best friend who he places above all others?)....Hence he is WILLFULLY COMPLICIT and a ACCOMPLICE to all the abuse going on! He is the perfect embodiment of the phrase "as if he pulled the trigger himself!"....
that Leader's wife hasn't been seen in public for over 12 years and counting! Presumably she was also friends with cruise as well?! And Tom Cruise thinks nothing wrong is going on in this particular case either? COME ON!...

R199, you know that’s an impossible question to answer. In general terms, I think many people 35 and over know of TC Scientology links. Anyone who followed him for sure and especially those who follow gossip, which in his prime was plentiful. More women than men I’m sure, not that the latter would care much. As was said on another post, Tom was wise to disappear from public view after the Katie Holmes divorce. People have short memories and probably don’t even remember Suri is his kid. KH isn’t exactly a superstar either. Nicole Kidman got more flack about her abandoning her kids than Tom did. Gen Z probably don’t know. Most people seeing the film don’t care.

Speaking only for myself, I hate Scientology with a passion, and I hate Cruise for his deep involvement in it, but I'm about to go see TOP GUN because, you know what? He's not the only person in the movie, and if we all avoided seeing movies or plays or whatever whenever there is anyone involved whom we despise because of their politics or "religion" or whatever, no one would ever see anything.

R202.. i'm sorry that is a huge "cop out" your argument. the whole if we knew what everyone was involved in or did bad we would never see any of their movies, concerts, sporting events, art, etc....Well, that's the way it's suppose to be! Who we are as persons and what we are involved in, is suppose to be MORE important than what we do for a living or how "important" we are....Once you know how can you forget and not act accordingly?...
It's a cop out because at the time YOU/WE don't know about these people (and all people are involved in something bad? and equally bad? is another cop out I might mention) are involved in that is bad, however with cruise WE DO KNOW! NO ONE should stick their hand in the sand and shrug their shoulders with a "oh well, everyone is bad in hollywood or wherever." mindset...
We know what cruise is not just involved in, but the public face of, whose best friend with the sociopath leader!.....
Another "cop out" is the whole what about those others working on that film, we should see cruise movies to support them. I'm sorry no we should not! IN all of hollywood and wherever films are made, a cruise film crew can't find work ANYWHERE ELSE? movies, tv, cable, streaming, independent productions, theater, and on and on! And by now, NO ONE in hollywood in front of the camera or behind the scenes could possibly not know what scientology is!....And i'm pretty positive if these film crew members are working on a cruise film, they are among the best of the best? can't find work anywhere else for a few months?
It's called having integrity, character, decency... Cruise's recent outrageous profanity laced screaming flip out on his latest mission movie at the entire film crew was literally harassment and threatening.. A few crew members literally walked out and quit! Bravo to them for having morality and self respect to do so.... Although then again, they did agree to work on the film and get hired and only quit in protest for being verbally attacked...
I have years ago worked in hollywood.. as a "lowly" gopher/ production assistant and office assistant for talent agencies, cable production companies and so on and more than once I quit on the spot when I was either treated as a non human thing or When I found out higher ups were involved in "shady" dealings and liars.. I went to work at office assistant customer service jobs thru various employment agencies until I found another gig in "show business"... I was struggling financially but I had my honor, character and principles intact! I don't think anyone on a film crew on a tom cruise blockbuster production is "hurting" for either money or work, like most of hollywood, they only care about little ole themselves.... Thank goodness, that is why I personally left that world years ago...

R232, right, but that plot point obviously didn't have to put that in the movie if they wanted Meg Ryan back, or if she wanted to come back.
On a related note, I was quite confused by something. Jennifer Connolly's character's name in TOP GUN: MAVERICK is Penny Benjamin. I just re-watched the original TOP GUN and there is a reference to young Maverick having been involved with someone named Penny Benjamin. My first reaction was that Connolly looked way to young to have been involved with Maverick so many years ago, but I just looked up Connolly and was amazed to find that she was about 50 when this movie was filmed. Damn, she looks great for 50!

All I know is I couldn't fathom working with cruise If I knew what he was involved in and who he really was! and NO WAY NO HOW does anyone in hollywood not know by now!..
It's one thing to be a lowly extra or barely a one two sentence bit player, struggling to pay the rent and build a acting career and resume, it's a entirely different thing to be a emily blunt or a henry cavill or a angela bassett or a simon pegg and so on who 1) can find work elsewhere 2) don't need the money..... shame on them too! and why are they like this besides of course the self absorption of a actor/actress? "well, tom is so so nice to me and everyone on the set" and "he never brings it up at work" and "that's his personal business and life, it's not my business" ... that's it! that's all they got!
DOESN"T anyone in hollywood have integrity and character? Yes, they are worse people in the world, but in hollywood cruise's success is equal to his complicit level of allowing abuse of thousands in his cult to continue..

Paramount Hit With ‘Top Gun’ Copyright Lawsuit From Original Article Author’s Heirs:
by Anonymous | reply 256 | June 6, 2022 7:08 PM |
Incredible that the Hollywood Reporter would publish a story including the following paragraphs, which contain at least four grammatical errors:
[quote]The complaint was filed by Shosh and Yuval Yonay, the heirs to the author of the 1983 California magazine story, Ehud Yonay, entitled “Top Guns” that the original movie was based off of. They are taking advantage of a provision in copyright law which allows authors seize back the rights to their works after waiting a period of time, typically 35 years.
[quote]The Yonays claim that the rights to the story reverted back to them in January 2020 after sending Paramount a notice of termination but that the studio “deliberately ignored this, thumbing its nose at the statute.”
by Anonymous | reply 257 | June 6, 2022 8:50 PM |
Saw it last night, it's everything one could wish for in a big-budget, mainstream Hollywood classic summer blockbuster -- Plot moves right along, mostly logical lol, no boring bits, even during the talking, quieter scenes, a couple of touching moments (especially Val Kilmer's two (!) scenes), aerial footage that looked real and tactile and easy to follow, human characters that you can care about, and a satisfying, slightly sentimental ending.
It's not a Howard Hawks-caliber picture, but as he is often quoted, with some variations, "If I can make about five good scenes and not annoy the audience, I've got a good picture." I think that standard has been met here.
Also, a big round of applause from the audience, and credits that show the actors' faces, names and character names, an always welcome way to end a picture.

I've seen more than one reviewer refer to it as a "perfect" movie, and I saw it today - and it really is.
It is not a perfect movie in that is does not have the emotional punch of "Longtime Companion", the amazing cinematography of "1914", the amazing acting of many movies.
It has all these things, in smaller (and not quite as potent doses), but it is amazing. I'm the most cynical bitch you would ever meet and this movie brought a tear to my eye.

I saw it last night with a packed house. It really is exhilarating, soaring. I loved the simplicity of the story and the stakes. Tom Cruise is wonderful in this role, as is all the cast. Jennifer Connelly is magnificent, beautiful. The theater erupted in applause at the moment of dénouement and again during ending credits. We need more movies like this

People are desperate to get back to the movies and that's why we're seeing box-office records being set every weekend. It really warms my heart to see it. Movies are back and bigger than ever!
Jurassic Park, which got savaged by critics, will cross over $500 million worldwide this week.

I agree it's great, R272, but I'll be happier if we ever get to the point that there are smaller, non-blockbuster movies to see. For one thing, the search for Top Gun-level blockbusters will result in a lot of increasing bad imitations.
I'd like to see a really good Hollywood horror movie - something like the first couple of Insidious movies, or the first two Conjuring. There are plenty of horror movies to stream, but a bigger-budget project like these is so much more fun to see in the theater.

Deadline: let’s behold the unstoppable sound barrier breaking power of Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick. The Tom Cruise pic’s fourth weekend stands at $43.1M, which is the third best fourth weekend ever for a major motion picture behind American Sniper ($89.1M) and Avatar ($50.1M). You could even argue it’s the second best for a movie in its fourth weekend, as American Sniper went wide in weekend 4 after a platform holiday release. Heck, Top Gun 2‘s fourth weekend is even higher than Spider-Man: No Way Home which did $32.6M. Top Gun 2‘s ease here is a 17% dip from weekend 3 with an expected Sunday EOD running total of $465.3M after a $15.3M Saturday, +40% over Friday (just $400K shy of Lightyear).

I don’t think it’s a surprise it is such a smash. The movie benefits from nostalgia and a new generation of fans who may be interested in the original but are intrigued by the cool planes in the new film.
Also, people are desperate to go out again after two years of on and off again lockdowns and want to be part of a communal experience.
Films like Maverick and Elvis are tapping into audiences who may want something in addition to comic book movies for an event screening, especially when going to the movies can be quite costly for some. People still want to go to the movies.
And Tom Cruise is a dependable star when it comes to popcorn blockbusters. Whatever you may think of him, he delivers with action films.
