Why is Ted Cruz universally reviled?

I’m a Princeton Alumnus who just celebrated my 40th Reunion this past weekend. Unfortunately for me, my big reunión years concur with his (he’s 10 years younger). When I tell you that EVERYBODY on that campus (26000 alumna and 2500 new graduates/undergraduate workers) was hoping and praying he wouldn’t dare show his mug at his 30th, let alone March in the parade, I am not exaggerating (ok maybe one or two).

He’s a different kind of Republican who even the most conservative of Princetonians (which include the likes of George Schultz and Muller) would be completely ashamed of.

The story I hear most often is that Cruz, even back in college. relished being the guy people loved to hate, that he pretty much had no friends.

And I believe no less than Bob Dole once said that the other 99 Senators would unanimously vote Cruz the most hated man in the Senate.

His electoral success is indeed baffling as he pretty much alienates people regardless of politics.

It'a about local vs. national. What may tickle a politician's constituents to death may not go over so well with Americans in general. Vermonters think Bernie Sanders is a regular guy but he scares the piss out of antisemitic Southerners. Likewise, Lindsay Graham may sound statesmanlike down South but to us Northerners he sounds like Huckleberry Hound.

It’s his intellectual dishonesty that’s most repugnant. Ever see him at a senate hearing? It’s all posturing, gotchas, and grand-standing. He’s the exact opposite of the qualities we need in a productive politician.

I remember seeing that R37 and thinking that Mazin was getting his 15 minutes by being The Old Roommate Who Hated Ted Cruz

Even when I was there in the 00s, it was much easier if you were white and had gone to the sort of private or upscale suburban public school that routinely sent kids to Princeton--when I got there I knew about a half dozen people pretty well and there were another two dozen who were friends of friends . That was likely even more true in the late 80s when Cruz was there and the fact that his BFF was Black seems to confirm that.

None of which really goes to explain why he is so loathsome. Michelle Obama was Black and from a public school and is personable and well-liked.

Maybe Cruz needs to be added to the "celebs with dark energy" thread?

I think everything you need to know about Cruz can be summed up in Trump called the man's wife ugly and he still sucked it up and sucked up to him. There are things you can look past in politics, but when an opponent goes after your spouse or your children and you do nothing, that says a lot.

Plus there is not an authentic bone in Cruz's body. He's an empty suit.

He's wearing an elaborately constructed person suit. Think of it as a human veil.

The most uncharitable explanation of heard about Cruz is that he desperately wants to not be Latino and that everything he does is because he is convinced the world is unfairly looking down on him.

Some of you might be too young to remember but Cruz reminds me of Richard Nixon. He has the same type of demeanor….awkward and off-putting. He's no less good looking than Bill Maher. I don't see what the big deal is.

He's intellectually dishonest and totally shameless and selfish, but sadly doesn't differentiate him from many others. Nor is he uniquely ugly for a middle-aged man. His nose is long and he needs to lose some weight, but he's not short or bald and his face is not really hideous.

His Republican colleagues don't like them because he made his name by grandstanding at their expense in the 2013 shutdown and is like that in general. They don't feel that way about the equally shameless Lindsey Graham. He loves the camera too, but usually not at the expense of his Republican colleagues.

Liberals don't like him because he's right-wing. He's also been around a while now. More time to become familiar with him than e.g. Hawley or Mike Lee..
