Why are cats so vicious?

They terrify me.

Dogs are so sweet.

You have never met a pitbull, right?

by Anonymousreply 3May 28, 2022 5:20 AM

Cats are little psychopaths but they are very sweet as well - maybe you're handling them wrong or stressing them out. The biggest mistake I see people making is that they don't understand that cats aren't dogs and manhandle them.

They were bred to kill. They're like dangerous weapons.

We're only talking about "normal" dogs.

Cats are tough. I’ve seen cats take on dogs, bears, alligators, people. I’ve seen plenty of dogs terrified of cats, few cats terrified of dogs.

And they’re vengeful. I was on a zoom call and watched my cat piss in my shoes while looking over her shoulder back at me, KNOWING I couldn’t stop the call to make her stop.

But they’re also lovable snuggle bugs and are way cuter than the cutest dogs.

Cats colonized the internet. And even though there are more dog owners than cat owners, there are more pet cats because people are nuts and will have six of them.

Cats rule. Dogs drool.

Cats are pussies. If they were bigger, I'd be scared.

by Anonymousreply 16May 28, 2022 7:39 AM

[quote]Cats are pussies. If they were bigger, I'd be scared.

They make bigger ones, you know. Tigers, lions, mountain lions. All big enough to kill you. But I love videos of the people who work with big cats and get to rub their tummies and boop them on the nose. They’re still cats after all. But I do expect most of those people will get killed by those cats at some point.

by Anonymousreply 17May 28, 2022 8:05 AM

Your typical house cat can be violent, and as others have noted, if they were physically bigger like other large felines (panthers, tigers, bobcats, etc.), they would likely at some point kill you. However, dogs also attack humans and, because of the large variance in breeds amongst domestic canines, dogs invariably cause much more physical harm to humans than domestic cats could ever capable of. How many people die from cat attacks?

by Anonymousreply 18May 28, 2022 8:17 AM

Both cats and dogs will eat your face off your rotting corpse if given the chance. But cats will just do it sooner. Like while you’re still alive, disabled and laying on the floor, waiting to die.

Most hardcore dog people are highly codependent and prefer dogs because they provide consistent affection and can be easily commanded. People who have cats tend to be more comfortable on their own and don't need the constant reassurance from their pet—if you want that from a cat, you will not get it at your disposal like you will with a dog.

Cats self-domesticated, and it wasn't until the Middle Ages that humans interfered with their mating to create a whorled tabby. Cats are solitary and territorial. You can get cats to like each other, but for the most part it takes time, and a lot of work to do so.

Cats are ruthless and efficient killers, ask the songbird population. The black-footed cat is one of the most efficient killers on earth, but is small, cute, and looks like a house cat.

Cats do appreciate the company of humans, but on their terms. Dogs seek the approval of their humans, cats tend to require humans to seek their approval. They are affectionate when they want to be, and expect you to respond. When they are done, they are done. Time to stop petting me now, or it is biting and scratching time.

[quote] Why in the hell would anyone want to own a cat, after that explanation?

Because they’ve infected us all with toxoplasmosis which makes us impulsive and love them like little mice attracted to cat urine? Nobody’s saying it’s rational, but cats are evolutionary advanced to make us love them despite all their horrors.

I think they’re from another planet.

by Anonymousreply 29May 28, 2022 5:05 PM

I have a theory that cats have taken over the internet because more people than ever before are renting and can't own a dog. I prefer cats myself but wonder where all these cat lovers were when I was younger.

by Anonymousreply 30May 28, 2022 5:12 PM

They were in their houses with their cats.

by Anonymousreply 31May 28, 2022 5:16 PM

Long time cat lover, first time caller.

I’m not sure cats took over the internet simply because of renters. I think they took over the internet because we all have phones with cameras now and catching a cat doing something ridiculous is easier than catching a dog doing something ridiculous. Dogs are cool and loyal, but they’re not batshit crazy like cats are. Hence our fascination with them. If they were people, they’d be the most dramatic, unhinged people in the world that you’d never want to get serious with but would invite to parties just because you know they’ll do something that everyone will be talking about for years.

by Anonymousreply 32May 28, 2022 5:32 PM

I love when my 3 indoor cats are sitting in the window and see a stray cat on the property. The sounds that come from their mouths is incredible. It's as if they're trying their best to form words.

by Anonymousreply 33May 28, 2022 5:40 PM

I'm very much a dog person and used to be ambivalent towards cats, but my neighbours got a tabby last year and I've grown quite fond of her. If she sees me through the window, she jumps onto the sill and mews at me, and if I'm in the garden, she crouches under a bush and watches me. She's so sweet and gentle (although the local bird population would probably disagree with me on that one).

by Anonymousreply 34May 28, 2022 6:40 PM

I love both dogs and cats, but it's unlikely I could own a dog. They require too much work and attention.

by Anonymousreply 38May 28, 2022 6:55 PM

Dogs do require more work than cats, and although it's true that dogs are generally more gregarious and friendly than cats, I have met some very, very sweet cats before and some standoffish-with-anyone-who-isn't-their-person dogs.

I don't dislike cats but I'm definitely a dog person. And I love watching cat people who end up with dogs (marrying a dog person, moving in with a dog owner etc.) become dog people. Like ex-addicts they generally become pretty hardcore about their new thing. I defy anyone to spend any length of time with a balanced dog and not become a dog person, actually. They're designed to be lovable, and to love us, and I don't know that I've ever seen anyone successfully resist. That whole meme of parents (esp. dads) who hated dogs and didn't want one being pictured baby talking and sleeping next to the family dog exists for a reason.

by Anonymousreply 39May 28, 2022 7:03 PM

Because They see through your bullshit OP

by Anonymousreply 40May 28, 2022 7:05 PM

There are all kinds of vicious dogs who attack, which is why there is the standard phrase "attack dogs."

Moreover, dogs can (and have) killed human beings.

Among dog breeds that can be vicious, extremely dangerous, and even deadly... besides pit bulls (which are by far the most dangerous and the deadliest): Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Mastiffs, Presa Canarios...

by Anonymousreply 41May 28, 2022 7:31 PM

I have a dog and cat and love them both. They are both cool in their own way.

by Anonymousreply 42May 28, 2022 7:42 PM

Unless you've been in between 2 cats fighting, you have no idea how loud, fast, chaotic and scary it is. The guttural groaning followed by ear bleed screeching is something that still haunts my dreams.

I have one cat now, but had 2 originally, brothers. Had them since they fit into the palm of my hand with room to spare. As soon as they reached adolescence they started a blood fued that could not be stopped. I did everything I could, tons of research on how to reacclimate them to each other, keep them calm, situate their litter boxes, trees, food, toys etc., to reduce territorialism and nothing worked.

The third and final fight landed me in the ER with scratches all over my arms for which one always needs antibiotics where cats are concerned. Trying to separate them basically guarantees you will be injured. I adopted one of them out, and it was very sad to have to let him go but I wanted them to have a good life. I still have his brother who is a very well behaved kitty. To this day I do not know who the instigator/aggressor was.

Henceforth and forever after, I shall have only one cat. They really are like little lions. We forget sometimes that they are not fully domesticated animals; perhaps it's that wild streak that makes them so irresistible to us.

by Anonymousreply 43May 28, 2022 7:44 PM

R41 Cat kills you by poison with toxoplasmosis. Very Fitting, they like to give you a long, painful, expensive death

by Anonymousreply 44May 28, 2022 7:45 PM

Same here, R42. My cat had a tough life before I got her at the shelter. She was so matted they had to shave her from the neck down, and she is not a long haired cat. It was almost five years before I could touch her below the neck, other than picking her up, and touching her on the back, just above the tail is now tolerated, but just barely - that was after nine years. She is very affectionate, but only in short spurts. When she has her fill, it is best to let her be on her way, unless you want to be bitten.

The only kind of cat I'd want is a cat who would allow me to touch his stomach.

My brother had 2 cats (from a shelter). One was kind of stand-offish but did like belly rubs. Anyway, I saw something on TV that I tried on the stand-offish cat.

While the cat was standing up on all fours, I petted his face, back, stomach, up and down all four legs, the entire length of his tail.

At first, he looked dumbstruck, in shock. In time, he became friendlier to me. My brother said the cat knew the sound of my car and got excited to hear me drive up.

by Anonymousreply 57May 28, 2022 8:42 PM

R57 I have two cats and they like to be touched everywhere- belly-legs-head-tail- everything- they have a very sweet personality.

by Anonymousreply 62May 28, 2022 8:52 PM

I like to give dogs a bath. A cat would have to have a bath in my house.

by Anonymousreply 63May 28, 2022 8:54 PM

Oh, r62, I think you have that backwards! Cats are definitely secure and have superiority complexes. People think dogs are smarter because they can be trained. Cats can be trained. They just don’t wanna be told what to do and couldn’t give a fuck. They think dogs are dumb little bitches for doing what the humans tell them to do.

by Anonymousreply 64May 28, 2022 9:01 PM

R64 So true. Cats also tend to obey if they trush you

by Anonymousreply 65May 28, 2022 9:03 PM

For years I suffered under the impression that I had conditioned my cat to do things like come when I whistled the Imperial March from Star Wars. Finally realized, nope, she conditioned ME to whistle the Imperial March theme just because she could.

by Anonymousreply 66May 28, 2022 9:04 PM

R64, the three cats in OPs video don’t seem very secure to me. Dogs are a bit dumb, I grant you that, but they are also very relaxed. Unless you enter their territory and they don’t like you.

by Anonymousreply 67May 28, 2022 9:06 PM

You can buy a dog a dog bed and it’ll be so grateful that it’ll sleep in it. You buy a cat a cat bed and it’ll sleep dead center in your king sized bed, because that’s what it feels it’s owed. Try to move it and you’re gonna fight! Unless it decides it’s taking the dog’s bed.

A dog is a pet, a companion. A cat is a roommate who may or may not hate you.

I was living with a long-term boyfriend and couldn’t be there to sign the lease. The rental agent knew we were living together but the property office apparently didn’t, and when we broke up and he moved out, they declared that I was unlawfully occupying the apartment and wanted to raise the rent and Jane me sign a new lease. But I’d been paying rent and a pet rent (because she was on the lease) for year before they started this.

I told them the cat was still legally a tenant, if they raised the rent, I’d sue and I said I’m sure it’ll make a funny local news story where you look like a bad landlord.

They didn’t raise the rent.

by Anonymousreply 71May 28, 2022 9:25 PM

Dogs kill people. Dogs, mostly pets, kill around 25 people per year in the US alone! More than snakes and spiders kill put together! But you're afraid of cats? Okay. I understand irrational fears cannot be rationalized away, but surely you realize the truth about dogs? By the way, the US has never recorded even one instance of a kitty cat mauling a person to death. Never once. Just saying. Maybe you can't stop fearing cats, but you really should ADD dogs to that phobia. Remember that poor woman from France who got the first face transplant? A corpse's harvested face? Her face was mostly ruined by a dog attack.

The male cat has been with me for about 17 months and the female one about 6 months. They get along wonderfully and groom each other and sleep together. I took the female cat to the vet to be spayed and they remarked how sweet she was. Little Freckles is a 7lb calico and has the cutest meow - barely a whisper and she 'smiles' to let me know she's glad I took her in.

by Anonymousreply 81May 28, 2022 11:43 PM

Dogs are not more friendly than cats. It's just that they're friendly in a different way than cats are. Dogs are needy, begging, rambunctious creatures. Cats are calmly sweet and caring to their people (if they've been raised right). Cats like to give love to get love. And when you receive love from a cat you know you are well loved.

by Anonymousreply 100May 29, 2022 3:24 PM

Cats are vicious because they are hunters. Humans took in cats because they killed vermin. When human populations started adapting to agriculture. There was the issue of storing food like grains and dairy. Mice and rats would incest farms and eat the food that humans needed to survive. Cats would naturally be around to kill rodents. Humans saw this and decided to keep cats in close proximity by feeding and providing shelter. Cats slowly evolved to tolerate human presence and start seeking out human interaction. Unlike dogs which humans domesticated when we were hunter gatherers to assist us in hunting and guarding. Cats so not see human owners as their "alpha" to submit too. They see humans as partners or friends.

Not to be stereotypical but I noticed dog owners tend to be very needy, love validation and attention. Often taking their dogs everywhere even in stores, coffee shops and restaurants. Giving people the stink eye if they dare tell them that dogs aren't allowed.

by Anonymousreply 101May 29, 2022 4:04 PM

It is actually the opposite, R101. Humans didn't domesticate cats. Cats domesticated themselves. They followed rats and other vermin to human agricultural settlements and humans noticed that they were useful, and let them stay. Eventually the relationship evolved, but the cats started it. We didn't go out and find them to bring them to our farms, they just showed up.

Humans didn't even start messing with selective breeding in cats until the middle ages, and we didn't start breeding them for specific traits until the 19th century.

Cats have been in charge of the human/cat relationship since the beginning.

Giving a cat a bath is a nightmare from the depths of hell. When I brought my cat home from the shelter she stank. I gave her a bath, and it was 15 minutes of hissing, spitting, fighting, and scratching. The cat was even more violent.

It was not a great start to our relationship, but at least she didn't reek anymore.

by Anonymousreply 107May 29, 2022 5:07 PM

R89, that's true of me!

by Anonymousreply 108May 29, 2022 5:19 PM

Cats aren't unfriendly, they show their emotions differently than dogs. I'm at a friend's right now, and her orange cat is looking out the window - while standing on my chest and shoulder. He could have jumped on the other chair and avoided me altogether, but we're close pals.

by Anonymousreply 109May 29, 2022 5:29 PM

My cat is sweet and friendly at the vet. They always say she’s the sweetest thing and they can’t believe how well behaved she is.

But she’s old and she’s stopped grooming herself well and she has tufts of hair coming out of her and looked like a stuffed animal coming undone, so I asked friends for advice and they recommended a cat groomer. Knowing it might not go well, I sedated her with gabapentin the same way I have when she had to fly on a plane. Dropped her off at the groomer and waited for their call to pick her up.

When they called, I asked how it went and the woman on the phone, who presumably has years of experience grooming cats, paused and finally said “not well”. Basically the sedative didn’t help, she turned into a vicious groomer-killing machine and they put her in a Hannibal Lecter mask for their own safety. Plus, they charged me an extra $60 for something like additional safety precautions and hazard pay. I was lucky because they actually have a $150 bite fee and she didn’t manage to bite anyone.

I’ll never do that again. She can be as stinky and dirty as she wants.

by Anonymousreply 110May 29, 2022 5:43 PM

Gross, R110.

by Anonymousreply 111May 29, 2022 8:59 PM

During the mice plague here, they find dogs are better at killing them. Cats merely catch the mice and play with them.

by Anonymousreply 112May 29, 2022 9:49 PM

^ Cats with no experience merely catch the mice and play with them. It takes some on the job training for them to become expert killers.

by Anonymousreply 113May 29, 2022 10:10 PM

Cats don't have the physical strength of most dogs therefore nature has given them other ways to protect themselves. Claws & teeth like needles, and the ability to make sounds so frightening when they're mad it would scare the dead.

by Anonymousreply 114May 29, 2022 10:23 PM

They're quite viscous too, hard to dissolve.

by Anonymousreply 115May 29, 2022 10:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 118May 29, 2022 10:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 119May 29, 2022 10:39 PM

I feed strays and the males don't fight if they're neutered.

Spay and neuter all house pets as soon as possible.

by Anonymousreply 120May 29, 2022 10:41 PM

Cats are beautiful animals. One just has to follow their cues and respect them.

by Anonymousreply 121May 29, 2022 11:15 PM

[quote]I feed strays and the males don't fight if they're neutered

True, but I'm reminded of two neutered males we had when I was a teenager - the mild mannered gay one (we always thought he was gay, also a master hunter), that HATED the younger swaggering punk. If they ever got face to face, gay one would swat punk one. There was plenty of room and it rarely happened, but occasionally punk was too stupid to stay out of gay's way.

by Anonymousreply 123May 30, 2022 5:42 PM

Probably because most of them are owned and have been raised by (potential) Dataloungers.

by Anonymousreply 124May 30, 2022 5:47 PM

Again, R123 is just another example of cats being mean and nasty.

by Anonymousreply 125May 30, 2022 6:18 PM

It would be nice if the owners bought that sad little dog his own bed instead of making him share with the cat who obviously doesn't want to share, R123. People do some awful shit to post videos online.

by Anonymousreply 126May 30, 2022 6:18 PM

That probably IS the bed that they bought for the dog, and the cat has taken it over. There likely is a cat bed off camera that belongs to the cat.

by Anonymousreply 127May 30, 2022 7:10 PM

R125 How was the cat being nasty ?

by Anonymousreply 128May 30, 2022 8:42 PM

R101 Maybe in NYC and LA people take their dogs everywhere, not the case elsewhere. I live in NC and we do not take our dogs to restaurants, shops, etc. Dogs stay in the yard.

by Anonymousreply 129May 30, 2022 9:33 PM

Have you been to an airport lately, R129?

Dogs are everywhere now!

So many people just refuse to leave them at home.

And these are not service dogs.

I see people wheeling them around in strollers, and carriers, or just walking them on a leash.

They're mostly small dogs, though.

The bigger ones have to be actual service dogs.

by Anonymousreply 130May 30, 2022 9:36 PM

My friend’s cat bites and attacks everyone. It even draws blood. The cat has some psychological issues that my friend ignores. It needs drugs or something. Seems cruel not to treat it. I had a lovely cat for 20 years. It never once attacked me. I like cats, I love dogs.

by Anonymousreply 131May 30, 2022 9:37 PM

Then that's one dumb dog, R127, though I doubt there's another bed.

by Anonymousreply 132May 30, 2022 9:58 PM

They aren't vicious! They are powerful forces of protection and destruction and should thus be revered as sacred.

by Anonymousreply 134May 30, 2022 11:17 PM

Sorry for typos

by Anonymousreply 135May 30, 2022 11:24 PM

No time to read entire thread. Sorry if already pointed out.

Cats are not as smart as dogs. They're too primitive an animal to be much more than basic. And I mean really basic.

Results showed that the dogs, having larger brains to begin with, had more than twice as many neurons in their cerebral cortex as the domestic cat, with around 530 million cortical neurons to the cat's 250 million. For comparison, there are around 16 billion neurons in the human brain.

Cats are just stupid and not capable of learning all that much. Cat owners love to pretend cats are just too "independent" to learn or obey but it's simply they are too dumb to.

by Anonymousreply 136May 31, 2022 5:01 PM

Dogs are more obedient which people mistake for intelligence. Cats are half-feral so they're not going to do stupid shit for humans.

by Anonymousreply 140May 31, 2022 5:20 PM

To be obedient you have to understand what is expected of you. They are able to "read" people which is very much a form of intelligence. People who can read other people and pick up on body language and vocal intonations are usually very smart. They usually are also better survivors. How many serial killer victims did the smart thing in their encounters with said serial killer? (not counting serial killers that just jump out of bushes and knock you out)

Cats are half feral because they are incapable of being fully domesticated which is because they are stupid. Like gerbils.

But keep trying, Cat Lover.

by Anonymousreply 141May 31, 2022 5:30 PM

Being obedient like a German Shepherd jumping at a criminal with a gun is not smart, it’s sheer stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 142May 31, 2022 9:31 PM

My cat saved me from a serial killer. I dont know how she did it but Missy Pooty Boops read Jeffrey Dahmer and just KNEW he'd eat me if given half the chance.

by Anonymousreply 154June 9, 2022 3:26 PM

There are some sweet and nice cats, but I don’t want them in my home. They tend to urinate in the house in spite of a clean litter box. Their urine is odor is so foul and there’s no way to remove it. Nothing eradicates it. It lasts forever and it ruins a house.

by Anonymousreply 155June 9, 2022 4:05 PM

^ NEVER had that problem. Perhaps you should suggest your friend have his male cat neutered, R155.

by Anonymousreply 156June 9, 2022 6:43 PM

Well, like some who are biologically challenged and jeaolous, they know they can never be dogs.

by Anonymousreply 157June 11, 2022 4:07 PM

Chows are notably standoffish R39. All those banging on about how needy dogs are and how independent cats are have obviously never encountered the disdain and contempt that most Chows have for everyone except the very limited circle they regard as family.

by Anonymousreply 165June 12, 2022 6:50 PM

I was going to devote a thread to that cat, R164. Wait - I AM!

by Anonymousreply 166June 12, 2022 6:54 PM

An estimated 30-40 percent of cats are infected with Bartonella henselae, which causes 'cat-scratch fever' or 'cat-scratch disease.'

I had Bartonella along with Lyme disease years ago, and I had major mental health problems at the time. I became paranoid and agoraphobic, and I had mental visions all day every day of myself falling off the roof of my apartment building. I was *really* anxious and overly sensitive especially to sounds, one of the primary reasons I became a shut-in, and I couldn't stand to be around noisy people, animals, etc., and would panic and yell when visiting my family and they made me nervous. I knew I was crazy and it was very upsetting. I saw a shrink and she had me on several different medications.

It took years to be diagnosed, and after I was treated with antibiotics, I suddenly stopped being nervous/anxious, stopped lashing out, my social anxieties went away. It was crazy. I felt like I had been possessed and then had an exorcism. My body is covered in scars caused by the infection.

I think a lot of the crazed domestic cats who are overly aggressive and act schizophrenic probably have Bartonella in their nervous systems.

Here's a case history of a teen boy who was diagnosed with schizophrenia and later discovered to have Bartonella. All his psychotic symptoms went away when he was treated with intravenous antibiotics.

[quote] The August 2005 issue of National Geographic Magazine had a news item entitled “Who Knew? Your Cat Could Make You Crazy.” In the article it reported that some infectious agents, Toxoplasma gondii and Borrelia burgdorferi [Lyme disease] can cause psychotic disorders in humans. We feel that Bartonella should be added to this list. In this regard, we have studied 2 people who were hospitalized due to psychoses who recovered after therapy for their Bartonella infections. Several case histories reported psychotic disorders, dementia, and aggression in people with neurologic disorders caused by feline Bartonella.10, 11

Remember, as estimated 30-40 percent of cats have Bartonella infections, and they can spread it with their claws or teeth.

by Anonymousreply 173June 13, 2022 11:25 AM

No matter how domesticated, dogs and cats are animals that will revert to natural behavior given the circumstances. Cats can bite you. Dogs bite, too.

Have you seen human behavior lately?

Here in the United States, humans...usually young men...obtain guns of all calibers and shoot other humans. Shooting humans in large numbers...men, women, and children...is the trend these days.

I grew up with cats and dogs, and as R15 noted, a lot of dogs are truly terrified of cats when push comes to shove. We had a coonhound growing up (dogs bred to hunt foxes), and both of our cats—one of whom was a runt and marginally larger than a kitten—had complete command over her once she tested their boundaries. She was both fascinated by and terrified of them. All it took was one hiss and her tail would drop, head went down, and she'd run to the other room for safety.
