For the same reason people are mean to customer service staff and receptionists and admins. It's because they're on the front lines. I'm glad that OP, rightly, made this a class issue instead of a race issue, but being mean to waitstaff seems to be something that happens across the board.

It’s because service people usually don’t get it so I have to spell it out for them s.lo.w.l.y. I was at an Applebee’s and the waitress forgot extra whipped cream on my Oreo shake even though I repeatedly requested it. Some people can’t be helped.

While traveling in Korea, I watched groups of low class Japanese tourists treat Korean service workers like trash (I speak Japanese and understand Korean). It is a worldwide phenomenon.

I'm old and Southern and mixed so I'm going to go there. My grandparents' generation would never have tolerated this because they were raised relatively conservatively, had some religious background, and their identity with the waiter (as a fellow working class person and just as a human being on this earth) produced empathy and restraint and their religious beliefs told them treating people like crap was wrong.

That's all gone now. Plus too many drug addicts in the generations following my grandparents among the working class.

R12 I worked retail after high school, and I know how awful it is to deal with the public. I can never bring myself to be rude to a service worker no matter what.

I think it should be a requirement that everyone work a customer service job at least once in their life for a minimum of 12 months. You start to realize that being a shitty person transcends class, race, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, etc. This can result in one of two things occurring: you either end up hating everyone equally, or realize that people are individuals and their behavior is unpredictable. So, it's best not to jump to conclusions based upon a few characteristics.

Obviously, I chose the easy option and hate everyone equally. But at least I'm not rude to customer service staff. :)

I’ve never worked as a server but I’ve worked in retail and a photographer which was very much customer service or as my boss called it, “hospitality”.

Upper class and lower class people are more personable from my experience. There’s less of a facade you have to put up dealing with them. Rich people and poor people kind of throw their money around, one does it because they have a lot of money and one does it because they can’t handle money.

I would rather interact with trailer park people and people in projects than from some middle class suburban family. Those are the utter nightmares.

They’re cheap and snobby at the same time and expect “customer service”.

Maybe that’s different as a server but just my experience working with the public.

Agree with r15 middle class people are the worst. I would also say middle eastern , Indian/Pakistani and Eastern European immigrants are really awful.

Middle class people expect the most and are the most difficult and the cheapest.

Like I said, I worked as a photographer. The richest people and the poorest people spent the most money. And I had more fun with them.

I enjoyed hillbillies and hoodrats and I loved working with people from Jersey and NYC. There’s no bullshit. And rich people and I mean rich, would come in and be so nice and changed my whole perspective of the upper class.

I worked with customers who came from all over the world - southerners and Australians are the nicest. I also loved working with the French.

Connecticut people were THE WORST.

Or just middle class people from upper class places. Like people from Cape Cod who most likely had the shittiest house on the street. You could just tell! Their attitudes were horrible and snobby and they never had the money to back it up.

I worked in customer service in an area that was "upper lower middle class" (to quote The Simpsons). The people who lived there that were "rich for the area but not actually rich" were always assholes. Particularly the women.

I too worked customer service for decades.Everything from waiter to City Hall Tax dept. Everyone can be an asshole no matter what color or economic level. I will say this though,I only put up with so much then Id let them know in no uncertain terms that this wasnt going to happen. Not with me. 99% of the time theyd calm down and we could resolve the issue. I also never was job scared,so my bosses knew Id quit in a nano second if they fucked with me.But I agree that middle class white people were the worst overall..
