Do You Snap Your Fingers Instead of Clapping As To Not Trigger People?
From Reddit:
Going to steal a previous answer by u/rewboss,
Basically, among some students in some places, there has been a movement that seeks to minimize distress in vulnerable students.
You've probably heard of talk recently of "safe spaces". Originally, back in the 70s and 80s, safe spaces were rooms where victims of homophobic bullying could find respite, and where homophobes were excluded.
Recently, this idea has been expanded. Now, some people regard "safe spaces" as areas where people will not be exposed to anything they find (or claim to find) disturbing, challenging to their personal beliefs, triggering or offensive. And increasingly now, it is being said that rather than have specific rooms that are "safe", entire university campuses are being declared "safe spaces", and so off limits to anyone or anything that could remotely be described as threatening.
And in some places, some people have complained that they find the sound of applause uncomfortable. And so, instead of clapping, students are being asked to snap their fingers, so as not to upset those who don't like the sound of applause. In some British universities, it has been said that students don't make any noise at all, but wave their hands instead (I don't know if that's true; I would in fairness point out that waving hands is how deaf people applaud -- clapping in sign language, so to speak -- so maybe something got misreported).

But, then what happens when other people say they are uncomfortable with finger snapping or a room of people doing silent jazz hands? The jazz hands one does seem especially disturbing.
Let's use this metaverse crap and say look if you are that uncomfortable in the normal world, get online and live in the metaverse where you can shape it to your desire. Just leave the real world to the rest of us.

I hate snapping my fingers. I'm too arthritic (ancientgay). And the sound is more unpleasant than that of people clapping.

Welcome OP. [bold]I see you came all the way from 2015.[/bold]
I can report that snapping instead of clapping is NOT a thing on campuses and WAS NEVER a thing.
But wait till you see how openly lunatic the American rightwing has become.

Yep, I was going to post that. I mean who knew that would be a thing? Even though I was never a good finger snapper on my left hand.
You young 'uns have a lot to look forward to.

R5, it's not just college campuses. The Democratic Socialists of America encourage snapping to prevent sensory overload in spastics.

I hate snapping my fingers and it seems aggressive so I can’t see how it’s a good calming alternative to clapping.
Must we always accommodate the sensory impaired now.

The only time an audience should snap, is if The Addams Family theme is playing, or if you are in a pretentious poetry or jazz club.

This is done in some of the progressive NYC public schools (I don’t know about high schools, but definitely elementary). There is also a hand motion to be called on (instead of raising a hand).
And a “me too” hand signal. It’s used if a student agrees with something that another student is sharing.
I guess it’s to cut down on talking over another person or keeping a classroom quiet.

R13 Thank God, I'm not in school. I already got in trouble for talking all the time, now they would have me drugged and drooling.

Thank you, Dowager Countess. You may acquaint yourself with the phenomenon from the famous 2016 Harvard video where they click a bunch of moronic crickets.

College is supposed to be teaching kids how to think critically and instead, they are coddling babies. It is ridiculous. These idiots won't be able to run the country when they come of age. I hope I am dead by the time they come of age. the country really will be like the movie idiocracy. Only the stupid are breeders now.

We could defeat an entire army of R7s with just loud chatter and clapping.
Think of the money we'd save on bullets and tanks.
Did anyone raise these special people or were they just cast in the streets to fend for themselves?

R21 Please...just say war and they would shit themselves. It is why I've never really feared a communist or socialist revolution in this country. Those revolutions are almost always spearheaded by the middle class and ours is too soft and lazy to revolt.

Reminds me of the scene in Hidden Figures where all the scientists snap their fingers upon hearing good news. When that scene was questioned, the answer was that it was very hep - beatniks did it to show approval.
