(We’ve done the 80’s). By the 90’s the internet still a way’s off and print advertising continued to dominate. Crush-worthy dudes and beefcake photographed for sex appeal was becoming more mainstream. The homoerotic context of this imagery was also becoming more openly talked about in mainstream culture. What are the most iconic 90’s homoerotic photo print ad/posters of the 1990’s? This one broke the mold:
Most iconic 90’s homoerotic photo print ad/poster?

About 2 or 3 threads were made using the Marky Mark ad. You didn’t need to make yet another J.
Also, nothing homoerotic about a man in underwear by himself.

I thought homoerotic meant implying homosexuality. For example: those 1940s Navy ads with hunky soldiers bathing together with big grins. The Marky Marky ones were very hetero, he was posing with Kate Moss. There's been plenty of shirtless men in ads.
When I think of homoerotic 90s, Abercrombie and Fitch comes to mind.

Bruce Weber’s print ads for Abercrombie and Fitch rode the wave started by the Marky Mark Calvin Klein ads, and kept going until they almost looked like gay porn.

r2 yes. Marky Mark's ads are not "homoerotic" just because gays like it

I get everyone’s definitions of homoerotic here, and how they correctly apply, or don’t. But like it or not, for those that were there in the 90’s those Marky Mark ads were massively popular in gay culture at the time (and in the culture at large). So much so that moronic GLAAD kept trying to scold everyone into not liking them because Mark was a street thug and not a proper role model. Oh, the controversy!

Does anyone remember that weird trend that began in 90’s fashion magazines of blurry, polaroid-like photography with single frontal lighting (or natural lighting… often with red eyes)?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 22, 2022 5:23 PM |
Homoerotic
: of, relating to, or involving sexual activity between people of the same sex specifically : marked by, revealing, or portraying sexual desire between people of the same sex homoerotic photographs.
R6 Gay like hot guys who are shirtless. Big deal. Doesn't make it homoerotic because it doesn't fit the definition. If Mark was posing with another man, then yes it would fit but his homophobic ass would not do that. Lesbians like pictures of hot women. Does that make it lesboerotic?

R7 Yes. Gay photographer Ryan Mcginley capitalized on this trend with his photos in (early) Vice magazine and then bled into the fashion world. His take was more pansexual (and nude) with boys and girls and a focus on wild youth. But his was an interesting strain of homoerotic photography in print at the time.

R9 Ryan McGinley was more associated with the early 00’s, but I think his work in print (in Vice) definitely started in the late 90’s.

I think Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber were inspired by the likes of Kenneth Anger and Paul Morrissey's photography of hot street trade. The eroticized photographs of hustler Joe D'Allessandro seem to have inspired a lot of people. James Dean and Marlon Brando also big inspirations.

Here’s peak Ryan McGinley. About as homoerotic as an HIV test…

What happened to men wearing bikini briefs? You never see that anymore.

This 90’s photo of the Beastie Boys on the cover of Rolling Stone really laid homoeroticism on the line!

A man standing in underwear alone is not homoerotic. Being liked by gays doesn't mean its homoerotic..

When did XY and all those homoerotic “gay” fashion magazines from Europe start? Was that 90’s? Or early 00’s?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 22, 2022 6:32 PM |
XY was a magazine for gay teens and young adults. It had some really hot photoshoots.

It’s not homoerotic, but the various Marky Mark CK campaign ads made more gay boys and teens realize what they were than anything else in the 90s. Wonderful.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 22, 2022 8:45 PM |
But OK, if sticking to true homoeroticism, it’s got to be A&F.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 22, 2022 8:47 PM |
It seems like that In the 90s everyone was in Black&White, videos, photos...kinda boring, not a fan of that aesthetic

What would a discussion of 90’s homoerotic imagery be without mentioning meeee! Welcome to MTV Clubhouse, y’all!

In the mid-90’s I remember David Lachapelle doing repeated spreads of sexy male heartthrobs in fashion pictorials, particularly for Details magazine. Usually guys from Baywatch, Melrose Place, etc. They were always shirtless, even pant-less or nude, peek-a-boo sexy, and over the top gay stylized camp overkill. Very cartoon-like. When I think of 90’s beefcake shots I think of those Details spreads.

Hel-looo! (late-90’s photo spread for Rolling Stone promoting FIGHT CLUB)

Let's derail this thread like the 80s thread by bitching about what homoeroticism really means! yay! I'm pedantic!
