Viola Davis Reveals a Director Called Her by His Maid’s Name

How sexual is the role? Without sexuality Miss Davis does not participate

[quote]“If I wanted to play a mother whose family lives in a low income neighborhood and my son was a gang member who died in a drive by shooting, I could get that made,” Davis said. “If I played a woman who was looking to recreate herself by flying to Nice and sleeping with five men at the age of 56 — looking like me, I’m going to have a hard time pushing that one, even as Viola Davis.”
[quote] Davis once played a supporting role in the Julia Roberts starrer “Eat Pray Love,” but it sounds like making a version of that story with her in the lead role wouldn’t be of interest in Hollywood. The actor said the reason is that “people can’t reconcile the Blackness with the spiritual awakening and the sexuality. It’s too much for them.”
[quote]While speaking about being rejected for roles in the past, Davis said a lot of the times she was passed over because of her race or because Hollywood talent did not find her “pretty enough.” The latter reason “really gets on my damn nerves,” Davis said. “It breaks my heart and it makes me angry.”
[quote]“A lot of it is based in race. It really is,” Davis added of being rejected. “Let’s be honest. If I had my same features and I were five shades lighter, it would just be a little bit different. And if I had blonde hair, blue eyes and even a wide nose, it would be even a little bit different than what it is now. We could talk about colorism, we could talk about race. It pisses me off, and it has broken my heart — on a number of projects, which I won’t name

I don't know where this woman ever assumed that men should find her sexually desirable. In her age bracket most old men wanna fuck Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts as far movie stars go. I've never met a man alive who would fuck Viola.

Look, Viola isn’t ugly, she can be made up to look really cute on talk shows and in magazines. And there she has a warmth and a sense of friendliness and sweetness.
That warmth is not present in her on screen performances. The earliest role I saw Viola Davis in is an episode of Law And Order: Criminal Intent. She was great. She played a steely eyed psycho. And she’s leaned into playing a steely eyed psycho in roles that don’t require. Look at her introductory scene in How To Get Away With Murder: it is ridiculous.
She doesn’t get those Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock parts because she is cold and aggressive on screen (which is why her Michelle Obama performance is a failure). That she is not a great cinematic beauty is a lesser issue. In her prime, she didn’t have the looks of Halle Berry or Angela Bassett or Alfre Woodard or Pam Grier or Kerry Washington or Diana Ross. Lupita Nyong’o and Jodie Turner-Smith have darker skin than her but they are staggeringly pretty. She doesn’t have the bone structure or edgy cool factor of Jada Pinkett or Gabrielle Union.
She has to work with what she has. Meryl Streep was beautiful and ethereal but she wasn’t pretty or sensual. Glenn wasn’t pretty or ethereal but she was sexual and emitted vulnerability along with her strength.
It’s okay to want to be America’s Sweetheart. Maybe Viola doesn’t have the range to be America’s Sweetheart (which requires effort and skill- Julia Roberts is not like that in real life). She can be sexual and “womanly” but she needs to accept it will be in a different way to how she is wants it.

Julia Roberts was opening movies against Star Wars and Batman. Viola was never or could EVER be in that realm. What does this woman think she is?

Did Michelle pay him to do it?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 21, 2022 9:27 AM |
She's not really cold or aggressive, she's intense, and romcoms do require a light and breezy attitude. That's why I don't really like Julia Roberts romcoms because she's not light or breezy. She was a little bit in Pretty Woman but lost that really quickly. Roberts had to be cast in romcoms that had an edge to them because otherwise they weren't believable.
I understand her bringing up Julia Roberts specifically because Julia cannot overcome her inherent brittle nasty side. People talk about how she was a real bitch in Runaway Bride or My Best Friend's Wedding and she was. Viola saw that and wondered how on earth that same woman got Eat Pray Love.
Viola could do really well in edgy dark comedies, dramas, and thrillers and have romances in all of them. Her only real problem right now is overexposure because of the interviews she's giving because of her book. She needs to dial it back because all anyone is publicizing are her complaints.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder in action: I am wonderful, divine, glorious, amazing and perfect, and if people don't defer to me constantly and tell me how beautiful, important, intelligent, talented and fantastic I am ALL THE TIME, then I will throw a tantrum and try to publicly shame them into finding me fascinating. Thus come the constant accusations of racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, classism, fat-phobia, queer-phobia, etc.
The problem with Viola Davis is that, even though she is incredibly privileged by most people's standards, she isn't privileged enough as per her own delusional view that she has of herself. She isn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination and yet, she thinks that she possesses the same level of beauty as Halle Berry, Lupita Nyong'o, Vanessa Williams or Dorothy Dandridge, or the elegant features and personality of Angela Bassett and Diahann Carroll. She is a very good actress among many other good actresses, but she doesn't have Lena Horne's, Meryl Streep's or Anika Noni Rose's prestige (probably because she isn't as versatile and talented), and nobody defers to her as if she were a member of the Selassie imperial family. Of course, that is because the world is racist and constantly conspires against her because we're all envious of her greateness. The fact that there are many people who have to work hard for peanuts and will never enjoy her privileges, is irrelevant to her: it's all about her and her sense of entitlement and self-appointed victim status.
In short, she is the African-American Lena Dunham (with the difference that Viola is talented, of course): people have the obligation to find her beautiful, desirable, unique, amazing, fascinating and wonderful and if they don't, it's because of a million prejudices and social malaises for which they must be constantly shamed. Accepting your own limitations and working to get what you want is not an option; thing must fall into your lap or else, the world is to blame.
Insufferable idiot. Someone should tell her to grow up and be grateful for what she has achieved, which is A LOT more than what most will ever achieve in their lives, in spite of trying with all their might.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 21, 2022 9:40 AM |
Because women relate to Julia Roberts being jealous of perfect blonde, Cameron Diaz in MBFW and to her being a commitment-phobe in Runaway Bride. They relate to her being a bored middle-aged woman who fucks a younger guy then runs away from all responsibility to find herself in EPL. Roberts is a star not because she’s her generation’s Sarah Bernhardt but because she is canny about the roles she takes on. They suit her.
Women relate to Viola Davis being a strong suffering mother in Doubt and a strong sufffering maid in The Help. They related to Angela Bassett running away to find herself and fucking a younger guy in How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
Women related to Michelle Obama. They don’t relate to Viola Davis baring her teeth like a minstrel and telling her (younger, hotter) husband Barack Obama he is a nigger and a coon.
Now, the Angela Bassett role Viola Davis is suited for is the smart professional woman who burnt her no-good, cheating-with-a-white-woman husband’s clothes in Waiting To Exhale.

R12 the fraus loved Julia Roberts that why they saw all her movies. Yes, Julia excelled at certain types of comedy but ultimately went to see HER. Nobody goes to a Viola movie. The Eat Pray Love comments are especially egregious. That movie only got made because it was a blockbuster bestseller. And the only actress who could get it made was Julia Roberts.
Not to mention the fact that every time you open HBO Max of one of these new streaming apps, there’s a dozen new movies about black and brown trauma or some self-elevating, indulgent bullshit about the glory of black woman’s hair.
She feels entitled to half a billion dollar star vehicles.
PS The fact that headline uses “exclusive” to highlight a microaggression is why people are turning off to Hollywood in droves. The rest of us have real problems.

Viiola is just an entitled whiny bitch who can't be happy with the success she has had and she has a clear need for constant validation. A couple of years ago, I was listening to a podcast where a comedy actress was on. I can't remember who the actress was and I feel like an asshole about not remembering who it was. Anyway, this actress is character actress and started off in the LA improv communities like UCB and Groundlings. She mentioned struggling and never booking anything for a long time. She said that once she got guest roles on TV shows and supporting roles in movies she developed gratitude for getting to those points in her life. That actress sounded quite humble and gracious. Viola is a person who has been high profile projects and still ain't happy with shit, yet a C or D list still has more gratitude compared to Viola.

But would she do it? Or would she be offended that she is ghettoised into doing her erotic fantasy with the black cinema factory rather than with Nancy Meyers at Warner Bros?

For every black actress who can't get a project off the ground because she's black, there are multiple women of other skin tones, including white, who can't get projects off the ground for other reasons that shouldn't figure into the equation, either, but they do. Some women appear too masculine, just aren't considered pretty, have crooked teeth, have annoying speaking voices, appear too ethnic--what have you. Unfortunately, being black is just anòther reason. In fact, it may even be the only reason why an actress can't get a project she wants to execute off the ground. Whatever the reason, however, I think it's equally frustrating to someone like Viola or to an actress whose boobs just aren't big enough when she's faced with obstacles in the way of achieving a goal. Shitty & unfair, yea, but these minor factors are major factors when there's $$$ involved.
I like Viola, think she's a terrific in her craft. But I also think she's someone who gets more thrills from the noble soap boxes she poses upon promulgating than she might by actually being more proactive. Getting something accomplished means and end to a problem, which means no more bitching. I'm not so sure Viola Davis would have an identity without feeling like she's constantly battling the establishment. But that's true of too many people across too many spectrums these days.

Correct. Which is why she will be 'The Black Meryl Streep'.

Isn’t “maid” an old-fashioned and slightly derogatory term? Nowadays we say “housekeeper” or “house cleaner”. “Maid” refers to a woman, and not all cleaning people are female.
And how often would a director be ordering his “maid” around? Most people don’t encounter the people who clean their homes. They’re at work while the staff is doing their thing. Was this “maid” a personal assistant, perhaps? I’ve never heard a boss even mention their household help by name. Oh that’s a lie. I had a woman boss who spent a lot of time calling the nanny who cared for her daughter; name was Michelle and what a saint that poor woman was.

I agree, she's trying to bully her way into that circle. She sort of reminds me of Mindy Kaling and that story about Kaling paid for another actor's meal in attempt to get acknowledged by him. Kaling also openly bitched about being snubbed by the Emmys. Viola and Mindy are both grown women who can't accept that not everything can go their way. Viola grew up in poverty while Mindy Kaling grew up upper middle class with a doctor mother and architect father. In a way, Viola is easier to sympathize with because she rose up from poverty. But, Viola's bullying and lack of humility is a major turn off and she's bound to piss off the wrong people at some point.

Tyler Perry films don't have the kinds of budgets that would pay Viola what she feels she's worth. She's at the point at which she could develop and shepherd films that would give her the roles she wants, but they would be tiny-budgeted independents and she wants to make studio money. (I don't blame her for that.)
I think she's a terrific actress, though her Michelle Obama shows that she certainly has her limitations. I just think there comes a point when you have to accept that certain things aren't going to happen for you, and it's not just because of racism (though that plays a part for many black actors).
Kurt Russell once said he would have liked to have had the career of Robert Redford, but that he was happy with what he did have. Viola is complaining from a position of immense privilege, and she may want to reflect on that.

[quote] Tyler Perry films don't have the kinds of budgets that would pay Viola what she feels she's worth. She's at the point at which she could develop and shepherd films that would give her the roles she wants, but they would be tiny-budgeted independents and she wants to make studio money. (I don't blame her for that.)
So she wants Nancy Meyers and WB, not Tyler Perry and Tyler Perry studios. It’s a bit late for that. If she were 46, or 36, it would be a different story. She looks good for her age. Why hasn’t she worked with Ryan Clogger and Marvel?
She needs to do what Jessica Chastain did. Go to Cannes every year even if you don’t have a film opening, attend to every party, schmooze with every journalist, drape yourself over every director and network like a MFer.
Don’t go to Cannes and complain.

Alfre Woodard is so much more elegant and articulate and downright refined than Viola. I love her and think that she should give lessons on how it's done.
At this point I think that Viola is a bit of a fibber. She claimed that she went to school in ages old urine soaked clothes, rats ate the faces off her baby dolls, she barely ever had food to eat, had cockroaches as pets- no one noticed?! No one?! She came from a small town, right? No one just stopped by to help or maybe to beat the crap out of her parents and then call CPS?
She is claiming that a director she knew for some time called her by his maid's name. She learned of that after the fact but knew him for some time. How does that work?
The voice she has on such a large forum for bring to light issues of intolerance she is muting by being a bit of a fibber. That is ghastly and a travesty.
Please note that I am not trying to imply that she is fibbing with everything just that she is a bit of a fibber if I didn't know any better.

Yes she's experienced racism in the film industry, but I don't care in the same way I don't care about the actresses who complain about making less than their male costars. Oh, poor you, making $3 million instead of $6 million! You're making millions of dollars playing pretend for a living. You're stratospherically lucky, experiencing a level of renown and comfort known to a very small number of people. Shut the fuck up and enjoy your success.

She's really trying to deflect from her shitty performance as Michelle Obama. She's gotta get that sympathy again.
I'm so tired of her whining. She was a PRODUCER on this First Lady show. She could have put her ego aside and graciously offered the role to another Black actress. But, no. Viola had to hog the spotlight and miscast herself as First Lady Michelle Obama.
She was also the lead on a hit TV series on ABC, which allowed her to shoot fewer episodes than other series - for her.
She's privileged but will never admit it.

I think people in this forum are compensating for the times they have to remain silent in public when they don't agree with something that's being called racist or privileged or whatever. There's so much you can keep inside before you start to blow up and let's face it, for the last 20 years you can't say much without being called racist or a right wing asshole, or a Republican or even a White supremacist. All you have to do is scroll up this thread and look at some of the "woke" responses. Why is Viola Davis the new she devil on DL? What’s wrong with you guys? She a terrific actress- for my money much better that Roberts.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | May 21, 2022 8:51 PM |
My friends and I have been laughing for weeks because Viola keeps the crazy coming. We noticed the downward spiral when she complained she’d been wearing wigs for years to be accepted. And, then…continued wearing wigs when she was given covers.
Then came the stories about growing up in a sharecropper’s shack, living Anna Mae Bullock’s life (except her “rag doll” had no face) and then TRIUMPH! She buys the shanty she grew up in. Okay, girl…all your life, you’ve had to fight and everyday is a struggle. We get it.
But, she kept going and people got into her ass over the Obama mouth and she got pissed. Now, it’s a director calling her by his domestic’s name. Over three decades ago. She’ll tell us about her Pap smear next and how the OB/GYN didn’t compliment her on her cooch.
Has she faced racism in her personal and professional life? Of course. However, she’s in a position now to cast more diverse actors and make other changes that would make Hollywood more inclusive but it’s only about her. She doesn’t want more women in Hollywood that look like her…she wants to be the sole token.
Auntie Viola’s problem is that she’s gone so Hollywood, she doesn’t realize how petulant and tone deaf she’s making herself out to be. There are White actresses that would give up their left implant (that they paid for on an installment plan that includes under the desk visits) for 1/10 the success that Viola has enjoyed. There a Black actresses that she could uplift and cast but she’s the self-proclaimed Black Meryl Streep (because she doesn’t even believe in her own stand-alone talent); if we don’t offer tribute, she whines.
She has to have a team that is worried about her rankings and ravings lately. This isn’t normal.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | May 21, 2022 9:07 PM |
R118 I think at the very least her PR team has tried to address her whiny bitch attitude, but she probably dismisses them and thinks she's justified in keeping on with her constant bitch fests.

I could totally see Viola dressing down and wearing some kind of wig to play Lori Lightfoot in movie or TV show, but then she'd fuck up the role like did with Michelle Obama and would have meltdowns when the critics would slam her.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | May 21, 2022 9:16 PM |
I looked up Viola's age. She was born in 1965 which means she probably came to LA in the late 80s/90s and had a difficult time and is still working through all that. No one in the late 80s/90s was going to hire someone who looks Viola for lead roles and it made her angry and a little bit bitter. Now that she has a level of success and fame, she's created a certain backstory for herself - probably true, but a little "heightened" for dramatic effect. Viola - savior of dark skinned black women who want to act. Let her have her thing.

It’s Deborah Wilson as Oprah good!
You know, I thought the whole Gratitude movement was pointless bullshit. But it probably isn’t. If you’re not happy for your achievements, what else is there but anger and bitterness?
Whoopi Goldberg is a decade older than Viola and she didn’t carry on once her movie career ebbed on the late 90s. She shrugged and went into TV, hosting and fundraising. Whoopi said on The View that she had a good run as an A-Lister, especially for someone who looked like her (she described herself as quirky and cute in her 20s, and not Hollywood gorgeous). She said she had to diversify and that having worked as a cleaner and in all kinds of jobs she didn’t consider herself to be too good to do gameshows and daytime TV. Now she has FY money.
Perhaps Viola doesn’t consider Whoopi a forebear because Whoopi has a background in comedy and Viola is classically trained. Even though their dramatic film acting skills are comparable. And even though Whoopi’s comedy was sufficiently impressive as to get her noticed by Mike Nichols and Steven Spielberg, as well as a Tony.
And the crazy old bat is still popular with her peers and respected in the industry, multiple scandals and gaffes later, precisely because of her work ethic and positive attitude. I hope Viola will be able to say the same in a decade.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | May 21, 2022 9:53 PM |

I actually like Viola Davis but I have no idea why she would consider herself in the same level as Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts. That's where her mental issues begin. Those two women are outliers. Julia Roberts is a fucking hag who hasn't been relevant in 20 years and who's oscar win is largely considered a joke.
Meryl is an overrated bore who has long worn out her welcome, and despite her screen success, has a forgettable, almost nonexistent stage career.
Viola is a Tony, Emmy and Oscar winning actress who is the arguably the most important actress of the last ten years. Her career has given her plaudits in every major acting arena. She has helped redefine each of the mediums she has appeared in.

I don't think Jessica's character in The Help ever interacted with Viola's character. I can maybe see why Jessica and Octavia are friends. But, who knows maybe Viola was whiner on the set and turned people off. Also, Viola has publicly stated her regret about being in The Help. Bryce Dallas Howard also said a couple of years ago that if The Help had been made in 2020, she wouldn't have starred in it and she called it a white savior film. I have wondered if Jessica, Octavia, and Emma Stone felt like they were sort of thrown under the bus by Viola and Bryce's comments.

R9 Encore! Encore!
“Look, Viola isn’t ugly, she can be made up to look really cute on talk shows and in magazines.
She doesn’t have the bone structure or edgy cool factor of Jada Pinkett or Gabrielle Union.”

Maybe I am heartless, IDK, but this sounds like she's making mountains out of ant hills. Maybe she "needed" some attention? What's the big deal? All my life my Dad has screwed my name. He'd combine my nickname with one of my brothers' names or with my Mama's name. ALL THE TIME. My own Dad. Viola Davis is a delicate doily, not a tortured actress. She's just "acting" like a victim b/c she's gotten used to all the interest in her over the past few weeks. If she keeps complaining/ acting like a victim of white men in her industry who dared to get her name wrong, those film makers are gonna pass over her for roles.

What's her obsession with being seen as sexually desirable? Low self esteem?
by Anonymous | reply 184 | May 22, 2022 5:18 AM |
If she wants to be paired in an onscreen sexual relationship with George Clooney or Tom Cruise or Antonio Banderas or Richard Gere by a major studio and be paid accordingly, she needs to produce an indie version of that film herself and hope audiences and critics like it before a media conglomerate will shell out the big bucks and the VIP treatment for her.
She should be taking meetings with Euro-kinksters like Paul Verhoeven, not whining at press conferences. She needs to be partying with Almodovar, not scolding her potential employers for not appreciating her sexual and spiritual journey.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | May 22, 2022 1:03 PM |
R184 I'm guessing low self esteem or possible envy towards other actresses in her age group who still seen as sex symbols. It's funny how Viola is so desperate to be seen as sexually desirable when other actresses who aren't extremely good looking or even odd looking accept their careers for what they are. Judy Greer is the type of actress who knows that's she's odd looking and not sexually desirable, but has clearly embraced being a character actress. Viola is just someone who despite having won awards and been in major productions still isn't fucking happy. She has some whiny attitude that Constance Wu has.

You're a liar, R196. Reese produced Gone Girl and didn't cast herself. The director said she was wrong for the part and she accepted that and gave the role to Rosamund Pike who got an Oscar nomination for it.

Getting a Grammy for spoken word should not count towards EGOT status. Genuine EGOTs should be people like Liza, Glennie, Diana, Angela Lansbury, etc who have conquered music (or musical theatre), film and TV. Not read an audio book.

I think she would been better as Amy because of how the twist was revealed and how certain things that turned out not to be true. The problem is that Rosamund Pike is too creepy and weird.

Who are these people? I have never met them at all.
Going to see a film which happens to have her in it is not the same thing. She's been nearly as unavoidable over the years as Tom Cruise.
I like Viola as an actress. I will say this--she needs to shut up and focus on the work. And not do bullshit like "Runaway Bride". Why anyone would be complaining about a totally bygone world of romcom stardom is beyond me. She could have a meaningful career. Just DON'T do what those basic white bitches did. They are boring as hell on screen, and Viola Davis is not.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | May 22, 2022 3:25 PM |
R208 if Viola was offered romcoms, horror and sci-fi she'd then complain she wasn't taken seriously as an actress and given quality dramas.

[quote] Speaking to Vanity Fair she compared her career - and those of other "unknown, faceless" black actresses who represent earlier versions of herself - to "fabulous white actresses" like Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Stewart who've had "a wonderful role for each stage of their lives, that brought them to the stage they are now. We can't say that for many actors of colour"
In Vanity Fair, she compared herself - someone who got screen roles in her 30s - to Stone, Witherspoon and Stewart, who started acting in their teens, and were recognised as more interesting than their peers and future stars even then. You can’t say that of many actors of colour, true, but you can’t say that for many actors full stop.
She’s getting ridiculous. Viola had a traumatic childhood. I can’t imagine how revolting it was for her to be raped by her brother and going to school stinking of piss because her parents didn’t teach her to bathe. But it’s put a chip on her shoulder that is blocking her eyesight. She’s so successful she can’t enjoy it because she didn’t have the early career of Julia Roberts or Kristen Stewart, because people don’t see her as a sexual being, because they don’t pay her enough.
She needs therapy. A lot of it.

Why is it such a “betrayal” now having starred in THE HELP (which gave Viola a coveted lead actress nomination, mind you)? The film pretty accurately portrayed the struggles of the AA characters at the time with a lot of dignity. And it was based on a very popular novel of the time and was *always* going to have a film adaptation. Every book club in the early 2010s read that book, even my all-gay one.
I think it’s denigrating to people like Octavia who won a well-deserved Oscar for the same film and launched the second chapter of her career. Go shit on one of your other failures, Viola (such as WIDOWS - where’s her hate for that mountain of shit?) It also includes (I believe) the most number of Oscar-winning actresses (Davis, Spencer, Janney, Stone, Steenbergen, Chastain, Spacek, etc.) so there’s some kind of record there.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | May 22, 2022 10:05 PM |
If she's denigrating her role in The Help, she's denigrating all the thousands of black women who had to work as maids to survive.
She's just trying to sell her book and change the subject from her lousy reviews for playing Michelle Obama.
by Anonymous | reply 218 | May 22, 2022 10:20 PM |
Jennifer Lopez and other non-black actresses are much worse than Viola but don’t receive the same level of hate. This is life as a black woman.
by Anonymous | reply 219 | May 22, 2022 10:25 PM |
I think that’s a little reductive, R219. Most of the comments here are responding directly to what Viola has been putting out there in the press of late. Lots of grudges, negativity, and flip-flopping (you can believe she just LOVED critics when they were praising her).
Where is the hate for Alfre Woodard if this was just about people specifically targeting Viola because of the color of her skin? Oh, that’s right. It doesn’t exist. Because Alfre doesn’t act like a cunt.

So because of this thread I listened to her podcast with Brené Brown on Spotify. She wrote her memoir during lockdown because she realised in spite of her Tony and her Oscar and her daughter and husband (who she really seems to adore) she was still empty and unhappy. She’s also lonely - she said she doesn’t have deep friendship (what the Fraus call a Tribe). It goes back to her being bullied a child for being dark and ugly and not being told she is beautiful. She’s been in therapy since her Juilliard days. And she’s aware she ought to be grateful for her very successful career. But she’s fed up of walking into a room and putting on a brave face and pretending she’s not suffering.
I think that’s why she wants to make this middle-aged fuckfest movie. That if her spiritual/sexual/romantic fantasy is filmed, that if she is considered not just talented and fierce but as sensual and desirable by the cinema-going world, the demons of that damaged little girl will be exorcised and she’ll finally be happy.

Just wondering, but why does Viola think that she should have star vehicles created for her that are romantic comedies or "sexy" films? I find her comments odd, because she has not shown any box office appeal. Yes, she is talented and has the stature of a rewarded actress, but why does she have a belief that she is a big star or is somehow is entitled to be a big star? It's show business, which is purely profit oriented. Star have to bankable to be cast in things, especially something like a romantic comedy, otherwise the studio loses money. Am I missing something here? I literally do not understand her gripes because her range is very limited.

Because she her loving husband and daughter and winning the Triple Crown of Acting hasn’t brought her the happiness she seeks, she has decided that money and sexual adulation in her working life will make up for the lack of money and lack of people telling her she was pretty in her early life.
It’s a teenage mentality. And it won’t help.

Basically, no, and I’ve made fun of Viola’s self appointed sex goddess status plenty. It’s one thing to think Person X looks like Person Y and keep it to yourself. It’s not harmless to announce to a black woman she reminds you of/call her by the name of your maid Aunt Jemima because they look so similar, especially in a work environment where you may potentially employ her. It’s incredibly fucking rude and snide for reasons that are obvious to anyone who isn’t autistic.

Pull the stick out of your ass R286. He may very well have been thinking of his maid when he spoke to her, maybe to tell her to put more starch in his shirts. Not because she was black, but because he was talki8ng to Viola, who I guarantee is a crashing bore to speak to. Youve never accidentally called someone by their wrong name ?
by Anonymous | reply 287 | May 26, 2022 2:29 AM |
It’s so easy to go through life not calling a black woman the name of my maid. Not calling an Indian man Ghandi. Not calling a banker with a big nose Hymie. Not calling someone with Achondroplasia Tyrion.

There have been lots of actors and actresses, who were plain looking or not attractive as the big name stars, who spent their whole career in supporting roles.
This is true of both men and women.
So why is VD's situation so much worse than those others? Why must the cause of her perceived situation be due to race?
The history of Hollywood is filled with actors whose looks determined the level of their success or failure.
by Anonymous | reply 289 | May 26, 2022 4:33 AM |
VD has some kind of bizarre entitlement complex regarding "sexy roles". She got her wish as she will be starring in a movie adaptation of a Terry McMillian book. If that movie flops like some movie adaptations do, Viola will pull the whining antics like she did in response to criticism of her Michelle Obama portrayal.
There was a horror movie podcast I listened to several years ago called Horny 4 Horror which was hosted by three comedians. One of them was Betsy Sodaro who is quite odd looking. She made some comment in an episode that a lot of the roles she auditions are for "hag looking" women. Sodaro laughed about of it, of course. You got the sense that she accepts that certain roles are niche for her. Sodaro's friend circle in the entertainment industry consists of people like Lauren Lapkus, D'Arcy Carden, Mary Holland, and several other comedians who are odd or plain looking and do a lot of supporting roles. I have noticed from interviews with those actresses that they also know comedy supporting roles are for them and they don't try to force or bully others into giving them roles they aren't suited for. Sodaro could easily be whining about having to audition for "hag looking" women roles to magazines and crying about how she's not getting chance for certain roles. She just stays quiet and laughs things off.

Viola on why she didn't wear a wig to the Oscars (when she lost to me.) She wanted to step on herself.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | May 28, 2022 7:07 AM |
The fact that Viola declared herself the "black Meryl" should have marked the end of her career—not because she's a bad actress (better or worse than Meryl, it doesn't even matter), but because it's in bad taste, and proves that she is a tacky, unprofessional, ego-driven cunt. Nobody cares which white actress she thinks she's the black equivalent to except for Viola.
by Anonymous | reply 296 | May 28, 2022 7:25 AM |
Aside from being some supreme thespian like Meryl Streep she thinks she is every bit the movie star that Julia Roberts is.
by Anonymous | reply 297 | May 28, 2022 7:29 AM |
She’s worried about how wigs made it seem she was ashamed of being a “dark-skinned woman with curly hair” but not worried about that dusty-looking dye job.

Meryl and Julia Roberts are white but that has nothing to do with Viola's painful grievances. I still don't get why she thinks she is in that caliber of actresses. Is she that delusional?

What's astounding is that after all this time as a well-known person in films, stage and tv, Viola still has developed no sense of awareness that she is a total downer. She's a chronic whiner and really almost wholly without humor or perspective.
It is astounding to me she has not figured out how to just "play the game" a little by now, or choose to just STFU every so often!

by Anonymous | reply 328 | May 30, 2022 4:46 AM |
Viola always forgets that she did not become well known until her 40's. And just because she had a hit TV show in her 40's does not necessarily translate to later success as a film star.
Streep was in Kramer v. Kramer and then a ton of other big movies. Sigourney was also a big star thanks to the Alien movies. Viola's comparisons to them make no sense. She is outraged because she feels she SHOULD be seen as their equal, because she went to a fancy school, has the Tony, blah, blah, blah. But she hasn't led a film to success at the box office, so her gripes are tiresome. She has a movie coming out in the fall, and it fails, I am sure it will be someone else' fault.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | May 30, 2022 5:31 AM |
Interesting that she disses The Help today, but it remains her biggest hit in a lead role, grossing $169 million in the US and $213 million worldwide. None of her other lead role films come close -- if you count Fences as a lead role, it's second at $57 million US.

I crack up at this because she is so desperate to be big box office headliner, but she just can't get that she's not in that category. She had supporting role in Suicide Squad which did well at the box office, but I doubt she was even appeased by that because she wasn't the lead. I wonder if she even truly liked by her Suicide Squad castmates other than Will Smith.
