Viola Davis Reveals a Director Called Her by His Maid’s Name

Oh dear Viola part 10. Don't criticize her either or you are racist.

by Anonymousreply 363July 14, 2022 6:57 PM

She probably has RACE! painted in giant red letters above her vanity.

by Anonymousreply 1May 21, 2022 7:59 AM

How sexual is the role? Without sexuality Miss Davis does not participate

by Anonymousreply 2May 21, 2022 8:04 AM
“If I wanted to play a mother whose family lives in a low income neighborhood and my son was a gang member who died in a drive by shooting, I could get that made,” Davis said. “If I played a woman who was looking to recreate herself by flying to Nice and sleeping with five men at the age of 56 — looking like me, I’m going to have a hard time pushing that one, even as Viola Davis.”
Davis once played a supporting role in the Julia Roberts starrer “Eat Pray Love,” but it sounds like making a version of that story with her in the lead role wouldn’t be of interest in Hollywood. The actor said the reason is that “people can’t reconcile the Blackness with the spiritual awakening and the sexuality. It’s too much for them.”
While speaking about being rejected for roles in the past, Davis said a lot of the times she was passed over because of her race or because Hollywood talent did not find her “pretty enough.” The latter reason “really gets on my damn nerves,” Davis said. “It breaks my heart and it makes me angry.”
“A lot of it is based in race. It really is,” Davis added of being rejected. “Let’s be honest. If I had my same features and I were five shades lighter, it would just be a little bit different. And if I had blonde hair, blue eyes and even a wide nose, it would be even a little bit different than what it is now. We could talk about colorism, we could talk about race. It pisses me off, and it has broken my heart — on a number of projects, which I won’t name

by Anonymousreply 3May 21, 2022 8:12 AM

She then went home and ‘made’ the director a chocolate pie with the words ‘You Is Kind, You Is Smart, You Is Important’ scribbled across it.

by Anonymousreply 4May 21, 2022 8:12 AM

Sanctimonious turd. Who wants to see her taking 5 lovers in France? That'd be a fuckin fantasy too, btw. No matter HOW fuckin sexual she demands to be. and her tv show she had a big hunk husband (Liam Neeson before too) and famine janssen as her female lover. No wants wants to FUCK you viola!!

by Anonymousreply 5May 21, 2022 8:37 AM

I don't know where this woman ever assumed that men should find her sexually desirable. In her age bracket most old men wanna fuck Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts as far movie stars go. I've never met a man alive who would fuck Viola.

by Anonymousreply 6May 21, 2022 8:46 AM

Was it Violet?

by Anonymousreply 7May 21, 2022 9:01 AM

Viola? By ALL that is holy, STOP talking. Be a mystery.

by Anonymousreply 8May 21, 2022 9:07 AM

Look, Viola isn’t ugly, she can be made up to look really cute on talk shows and in magazines. And there she has a warmth and a sense of friendliness and sweetness.

That warmth is not present in her on screen performances. The earliest role I saw Viola Davis in is an episode of Law And Order: Criminal Intent. She was great. She played a steely eyed psycho. And she’s leaned into playing a steely eyed psycho in roles that don’t require. Look at her introductory scene in How To Get Away With Murder: it is ridiculous.

She doesn’t get those Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock parts because she is cold and aggressive on screen (which is why her Michelle Obama performance is a failure). That she is not a great cinematic beauty is a lesser issue. In her prime, she didn’t have the looks of Halle Berry or Angela Bassett or Alfre Woodard or Pam Grier or Kerry Washington or Diana Ross. Lupita Nyong’o and Jodie Turner-Smith have darker skin than her but they are staggeringly pretty. She doesn’t have the bone structure or edgy cool factor of Jada Pinkett or Gabrielle Union.

She has to work with what she has. Meryl Streep was beautiful and ethereal but she wasn’t pretty or sensual. Glenn wasn’t pretty or ethereal but she was sexual and emitted vulnerability along with her strength.

It’s okay to want to be America’s Sweetheart.
While speaking about being rejected for roles in the past, Davis said a lot of the times she was passed over because of her race or because Hollywood talent did not find her “pretty enough.” A lot of it is based in race. Maybe Viola doesn’t have the range to be America’s Sweetheart (which requires effort and skill- Julia Roberts is not like that in real life). She can be sexual and “womanly” but she needs to accept it will be in a different way to how she is wants it.

by Anonymousreply 9May 21, 2022 9:20 AM

Julia Roberts was opening movies against Star Wars and Batman. Viola was never or could EVER be in that realm. What does this woman think she is?

by Anonymousreply 10May 21, 2022 9:27 AM

Did Michelle pay him to do it?

by Anonymousreply 11May 21, 2022 9:27 AM

She's not really cold or aggressive, she's intense, and romcoms do require a light and breezy attitude. That's why I don't really like Julia Roberts romcoms because she's not light or breezy. She was a little bit in Pretty Woman but lost that really quickly. Roberts had to be cast in romcoms that had an edge to them because otherwise they weren't believable.

I understand her bringing up Julia Roberts specifically because Julia cannot overcome her inherent brittle nasty side. People talk about how she was a real bitch in Runaway Bride or My Best Friend's Wedding and she was. Viola saw that and wondered how on earth that same woman got Eat Pray Love.

Viola could do really well in edgy dark comedies, dramas, and thrillers and have romances in all of them. Her only real problem right now is overexposure because of the interviews she's giving because of her book. She needs to dial it back because all anyone is publicizing are her complaints.

by Anonymousreply 12May 21, 2022 9:30 AM

R9 cut that shit. Viola is not sexually desirable to most straight men. She thinks she is but she's not.

by Anonymousreply 13May 21, 2022 9:31 AM

It's insane she thinks she's a Julia Roberts type. Hon Julia is what she is because grown men wanna fuck her and women want to be her. You don't have that. Move on

by Anonymousreply 14May 21, 2022 9:34 AM

Yeah how does Viola explain Lupita and Jodie Turner-Smith who are darker but gorgeous?

by Anonymousreply 15May 21, 2022 9:35 AM

Its crazy how she demands to be sexy

by Anonymousreply 16May 21, 2022 9:36 AM

r15 exoticism (fetishism) and not really black. (seriously. she goes full ados when it comes to darker women)

by Anonymousreply 17May 21, 2022 9:40 AM

Narcissistic Personality Disorder in action: I am wonderful, divine, glorious, amazing and perfect, and if people don't defer to me constantly and tell me how beautiful, important, intelligent, talented and fantastic I am ALL THE TIME, then I will throw a tantrum and try to publicly shame them into finding me fascinating. Thus come the constant accusations of racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, classism, fat-phobia, queer-phobia, etc.

The problem with Viola Davis is that, even though she is incredibly privileged by most people's standards, she isn't privileged enough as per her own delusional view that she has of herself. She isn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination and yet, she thinks that she possesses the same level of beauty as Halle Berry, Lupita Nyong'o, Vanessa Williams or Dorothy Dandridge, or the elegant features and personality of Angela Bassett and Diahann Carroll. She is a very good actress among many other good actresses, but she doesn't have Lena Horne's, Meryl Streep's or Anika Noni Rose's prestige (probably because she isn't as versatile and talented), and nobody defers to her as if she were a member of the Selassie imperial family. Of course, that is because the world is racist and constantly conspires against her because we're all envious of her greateness. The fact that there are many people who have to work hard for peanuts and will never enjoy her privileges, is irrelevant to her: it's all about her and her sense of entitlement and self-appointed victim status.

In short, she is the African-American Lena Dunham (with the difference that Viola is talented, of course): people have the obligation to find her beautiful, desirable, unique, amazing, fascinating and wonderful and if they don't, it's because of a million prejudices and social malaises for which they must be constantly shamed. Accepting your own limitations and working to get what you want is not an option; thing must fall into your lap or else, the world is to blame.

Insufferable idiot. Someone should tell her to grow up and be grateful for what she has achieved, which is A LOT more than what most will ever achieve in their lives, in spite of trying with all their might.

by Anonymousreply 18May 21, 2022 9:40 AM

Because women relate to Julia Roberts being jealous of perfect blonde, Cameron Diaz in MBFW and to her being a commitment-phobe in Runaway Bride. They relate to her being a bored middle-aged woman who fucks a younger guy then runs away from all responsibility to find herself in EPL. Roberts is a star not because she’s her generation’s Sarah Bernhardt but because she is canny about the roles she takes on. They suit her.

Women relate to Viola Davis being a strong suffering mother in Doubt and a strong sufffering maid in The Help. They related to Angela Bassett running away to find herself and fucking a younger guy in How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Women related to Michelle Obama. They don’t relate to Viola Davis baring her teeth like a minstrel and telling her (younger, hotter) husband Barack Obama he is a nigger and a coon.

Now, the Angela Bassett role Viola Davis is suited for is the smart professional woman who burnt her no-good, cheating-with-a-white-woman husband’s clothes in Waiting To Exhale.

by Anonymousreply 19May 21, 2022 9:41 AM

R12 the fraus loved Julia Roberts that why they saw all her movies. Yes, Julia excelled at certain types of comedy but ultimately went to see HER. Nobody goes to a Viola movie. For about 10 years both men and women went to Julia Roberts movies because they adored her. No one will ever go yo a Viola movie.

by Anonymousreply 20May 21, 2022 9:44 AM

She doesn't tell him he's the n-word r19, she says he's going to be regarded by racists as just an n-word. You can make your point without lying about the intent of the scene.

by Anonymousreply 21May 21, 2022 9:44 AM
Narcissistic Personality Disorder

It's crazy (pun intended) that we can't go more than 20 posts without someone making up some kind of mental health diagnosis for Viola.

by Anonymousreply 22May 21, 2022 9:45 AM

Um, I’m not lying about the intent of the scene. In fact I didn’t mention the intent of the scene.

The point is, she didn’t sell it.

by Anonymousreply 23May 21, 2022 9:47 AM

Viola does not need to be comparing herself to Julia Roberts. Julia is the last full blown female movie star. Viola doesn't exist in that world.

by Anonymousreply 24May 21, 2022 9:48 AM

You said she called him slurs r23. She said other people were going to regard him as those slurs, and that's not the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 25May 21, 2022 9:51 AM

For whatever reason Viola sees herself equal to Meryl and Julia as though she's accomplished the same things these pioneers have. Fucking delusional.

by Anonymousreply 26May 21, 2022 9:52 AM

Sigourney Weaver once said candidly. When Madonna or Julia Roberts walks into a room you are in the word gets to you very fast.

by Anonymousreply 27May 21, 2022 9:55 AM

Hush, r25.

The scene was terrible and she was terrible in it.

by Anonymousreply 28May 21, 2022 9:59 AM
The scene was terrible and she was terrible in it.

Obviously, but you aren't able to say so without misrepresenting her part in the scene. You've written two or three essays on this stupid thread already, and you STILL can't get your point across in any meaningful way.

by Anonymousreply 29May 21, 2022 10:04 AM

Julia gets Eat Pray Loves roles because people like to watch her, Viola doesn't get that. You are not an actress people like to watch. Get over it. Honey as her BFF Brad Pitt has mentioned before "you do not wanna cross Julia". So she needs to shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 30May 21, 2022 10:09 AM

And yet, it’s doesn’t make her performance any less misrepresentative of Michelle’s appeal and the project of utter hubris on Viola’s part.

by Anonymousreply 31May 21, 2022 10:20 AM

no one wants to hear movie stars whine. get the financing togther and make the movies you want to make. if it is a low budget indie then start from there. it has been done many times.

by Anonymousreply 32May 21, 2022 10:31 AM

She’s exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 33May 21, 2022 10:33 AM

The Eat Pray Love comments are especially egregious. That movie only got made because it was a blockbuster bestseller. And the only actress who could get it made was Julia Roberts.

Not to mention the fact that every time you open HBO Max of one of these new streaming apps, there’s a dozen new movies about black and brown trauma or some self-elevating, indulgent bullshit about the glory of black woman’s hair.

She feels entitled to half a billion dollar star vehicles.

PS The fact that headline uses “exclusive” to highlight a microaggression is why people are turning off to Hollywood in droves. The rest of us have real problems.

by Anonymousreply 34May 21, 2022 10:41 AM

Viola doesn't get that Meryl (her usual target) or Julia get big movies and salaries because they could open movies which people went to see and made a lot of money.

Meryl wasn't commending huge salaries back in the 90s when she wasn't a box office star

by Anonymousreply 35May 21, 2022 11:27 AM

Her angry black woman schtick is tired.

by Anonymousreply 36May 21, 2022 11:31 AM

Call Me By The Name Of Your Maid Before I Eat Your Ribs

by Anonymousreply 37May 21, 2022 12:05 PM

How did Vi know the name of the Director's maid?

by Anonymousreply 38May 21, 2022 12:12 PM
Viola could do really well in edgy dark comedies

I don’t see it. You’ve got to have a sense of humor about yourself and your image as well as an ability to embrace the absurd to pull off black comedy, all three of which Viola lacks. She’s too in her own head, too obsessed with this imagined image of herself as a Serious Actress to pull off something like Death Becomes Her or work with people like Lanthimos or the Coens.

by Anonymousreply 39May 21, 2022 12:45 PM
I've never met a man alive who would fuck Viola.

Did I specify "alive" motherfucker?

by Anonymousreply 40May 21, 2022 12:48 PM

The story about being called by the maid's name sounds like total horseshit.

by Anonymousreply 41May 21, 2022 12:53 PM

Viola is the only authentically black actress in Hollywood... everyone else is mixed or a foreigner,

She should be cast for every black woman role. she is the only black woman in America.

by Anonymousreply 42May 21, 2022 12:56 PM
Viola could do really well in edgy dark comedies, dramas, and thrillers and have romances in all of them. Her only real problem right now is overexposure because of the interviews she's giving because of her book.

No, her problem is that the movies she's headlined haven't made any money. If they had, she might be able to get the kinds of films she wants made, as she'd have proven that people actually want to plunk down money to see her.

by Anonymousreply 43May 21, 2022 1:06 PM

Someone could cast her in a remake!

"Stand over there, Lupita, erm, I mean Rosita, sorry, Viola. Those are my maids. I'm always confusing Latino people with Black people."

(Black maids stopped being a thing in about 1967).

by Anonymousreply 45May 21, 2022 1:11 PM

Viiola is just an entitled whiny bitch who can't be happy with the success she has had and she has a clear need for constant validation. A couple of years ago, I was listening to a podcast where a comedy actress was on. I can't remember who the actress was and I feel like an asshole about not remembering who it was. Anyway, this actress is character actress and started off in the LA improv communities like UCB and Groundlings. She mentioned struggling and never booking anything for a long time. She said that once she got guest roles on TV shows and supporting roles in movies she developed gratitude for getting to those points in her life. That actress sounded quite humble and gracious. Viola is a person who has been high profile projects and still ain't happy with shit, yet a C or D list still has more gratitude compared to Viola.

by Anonymousreply 46May 21, 2022 1:13 PM

OP is tired of talking about trans people - time for him to rant about black women.

by Anonymousreply 47May 21, 2022 1:13 PM

I don’t really know who she is, but is not not considered attractive? She looks stunning for mid fifties in the photo.

by Anonymousreply 48May 21, 2022 1:17 PM

Sure,Moesha Great way to continue the “even though I’m a rich successful woman, iz still bez da negro to dem” narrative. and yes I am not white so don’t start on me with “racist” shit. She’s part of the problem, always trying to create racist scenarios when they are not there.

by Anonymousreply 49May 21, 2022 1:30 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of things she's claiming turn out to be false. There's something really phony about this woman and I wouldn't be surprised at all if she has a major fall from grace.

by Anonymousreply 50May 21, 2022 1:41 PM

The thing is, Tyler Perry would absolutely option some kind of Nicholas Sparks/Elizabeth Gilbert-meets-EL-James rip-off screenplay for Viola and and hire Taye Diggs, Eddie Cibrian, Joe Magnaniello, Rick Fox and Andy Garcia to fight over her body.

But would she do it? Or would she be offended that she is ghettoised into doing her erotic fantasy with the black cinema factory rather than with Nancy Meyers at Warner Bros?

by Anonymousreply 51May 21, 2022 1:56 PM

Viola is revealing herself to be very much like Meghan Markle. Nothing is ever enough no matter how much privilege they have. And both have a huge amount of privilege. They're always playing the victims and, despite pretending to be feminists, they're constantly trying to cut down other women.

by Anonymousreply 52May 21, 2022 2:02 PM

I wonder if her recent interviews where all she does is bitch and cry will be enough to turn off some directors, producers, and actors from wanting to work with her. She may be shooting herself in the foot with some of her recent interviews and her bitch fests about the critics who don't The First Lady.

by Anonymousreply 53May 21, 2022 2:21 PM

As if How Stella got Her Groove Back was never made

by Anonymousreply 54May 21, 2022 2:50 PM

I'd love to see Angela slap the shit out of Viola or at least call her out on her race-baiting woe is me shit.

by Anonymousreply 55May 21, 2022 2:51 PM

But his maid's name WAS Viola!

by Anonymousreply 56May 21, 2022 2:54 PM

For every black actress who can't get a project off the ground because she's black, there are multiple women of other skin tones, including white, who can't get projects off the ground for other reasons that shouldn't figure into the equation, either, but they do. Some women appear too masculine, just aren't considered pretty, have crooked teeth, have annoying speaking voices, appear too ethnic--what have you. Unfortunately, being black is just anòther reason. In fact, it may even be the only reason why an actress can't get a project she wants to execute off the ground. Whatever the reason, however, I think it's equally frustrating to someone like Viola or to an actress whose boobs just aren't big enough when she's faced with obstacles in the way of achieving a goal. Shitty & unfair, yea, but these minor factors are major factors when there's $$$ involved.

I like Viola, think she's a terrific in her craft. But I also think she's someone who gets more thrills from the noble soap boxes she poses upon promulgating than she might by actually being more proactive. Getting something accomplished means and end to a problem, which means no more bitching. I'm not so sure Viola Davis would have an identity without feeling like she's constantly battling the establishment. But that's true of too many people across too many spectrums these days.

by Anonymousreply 57May 21, 2022 3:04 PM

R51 nails it.

by Anonymousreply 58May 21, 2022 3:07 PM

She needs A LOT of therapy.

by Anonymousreply 59May 21, 2022 3:53 PM

"I’m going to have a hard time pushing that one, even as Viola Davis."

Did she just refer to herself in the third person?

by Anonymousreply 60May 21, 2022 3:55 PM

MASSIVE 🙄

by Anonymousreply 61May 21, 2022 4:00 PM

She’s extremely unlikeable.

by Anonymousreply 62May 21, 2022 4:05 PM

Viola needs to join Will Smith at that luxury ashram and detox/dry out. She’s giving off major boozer teas and somehow, has tied Hollywood success to mean she’ll (finally) be seen as attractive.

Nobody is checking for a fucking Viola Davis as a sex symbol nor is she an automatic box office draw. She lacks It and is trying to bully her way into that circle. She isn’t charming or witty and her constant whining is worrisome. Her team needs to intervene.

by Anonymousreply 63May 21, 2022 4:23 PM

If she ever gets an honorary doctorate expect her to demand to be billed as Dr Viola Davis PhD in all credits from now on.

by Anonymousreply 64May 21, 2022 4:26 PM

She played a maid, arguably her best role.

by Anonymousreply 65May 21, 2022 4:31 PM

She’s exactly the same age as Diane Lane, Brooke Shields, Gong Li, Connie Nielsen and Elizabeth Hurley. I can imagine scores of men in Nice wanting to bang them, but the reality is as even Hollywood-gorgeous women would they’d struggle to be cast in that movie too. Under The Tuscan Sun was 19 years ago. Paris Can Wait was 6 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 66May 21, 2022 4:33 PM
I don’t see it. You’ve got to have a sense of humor about yourself and your image as well as an ability to embrace the absurd to pull off black comedy, all three of which Viola lacks. Correct. Which is why she will be 'The Black Meryl Streep'.

I've never seen her in a comedy. Has she even ever done one? I suspect she has a narrow range: quite workable in heavy drama, but I can't imagine her ever having the self-awareness comedy requires.

by Anonymousreply 67May 21, 2022 4:35 PM

"I had a director who did that to me. He said, ‘Louise!’ I knew him for 10 years and he called me Louise and I find out that it’s because his maid’s name is Louise,” Davis said. “I was maybe around 30 at the time, so it was a while ago. But what you have to realize is that those micro-aggressions happen all the time.”

I'm not following Viola's train of thought

by Anonymousreply 68May 21, 2022 4:37 PM

No one except Viola calls Viola the Black Meryl Streep. Meryl has talent and fans.

by Anonymousreply 69May 21, 2022 4:38 PM

Isn’t “maid” an old-fashioned and slightly derogatory term? Nowadays we say “housekeeper” or “house cleaner”. “Maid” refers to a woman, and not all cleaning people are female.

And how often would a director be ordering his “maid” around? Most people don’t encounter the people who clean their homes. They’re at work while the staff is doing their thing. Was this “maid” a personal assistant, perhaps? I’ve never heard a boss even mention their household help by name. Oh that’s a lie. I had a woman boss who spent a lot of time calling the nanny who cared for her daughter; name was Michelle and what a saint that poor woman was.

by Anonymousreply 70May 21, 2022 4:51 PM

Love her!

by Anonymousreply 71May 21, 2022 4:53 PM

R68 Seems pretty easy to follow

by Anonymousreply 72May 21, 2022 4:53 PM

Viola at R71.

by Anonymousreply 73May 21, 2022 4:54 PM

I used to like Viola, but this constant whining is not an attractive look. She's one of the most privileged women in the US, so it's telling that she has to reach back to a vague event nearly 30 years ago to decry racism today.

by Anonymousreply 74May 21, 2022 4:56 PM

I believe her. But I also don’t think that she makes a good Michelle Obama.

Both opinions can coexist.

by Anonymousreply 75May 21, 2022 5:00 PM
Nobody is checking for a fucking Viola Davis as a sex symbol nor is she an automatic box office draw. She lacks It and is trying to bully her way into that circle. She isn’t charming or witty and her constant whining is worrisome. Her team needs to intervene.

I agree, she's trying to bully her way into that circle. She sort of reminds me of Mindy Kaling and that story about Kaling paid for another actor's meal in attempt to get acknowledged by him. Kaling also openly bitched about being snubbed by the Emmys. Viola and Mindy are both grown women who can't accept that not everything can go their way. Viola grew up in poverty while Mindy Kaling grew up upper middle class with a doctor mother and architect father. In a way, Viola is easier to sympathize with because she rose up from poverty. But, Viola's bullying and lack of humility is a major turn off and she's bound to piss off the wrong people at some point.

by Anonymousreply 76May 21, 2022 5:06 PM
The thing is, Tyler Perry would absolutely option some kind of Nicholas Sparks/Elizabeth Gilbert-meets-EL-James rip-off screenplay for Viola and and hire Taye Diggs, Eddie Cibrian, Joe Magnaniello, Rick Fox and Andy Garcia to fight over her body.

Tyler Perry films don't have the kinds of budgets that would pay Viola what she feels she's worth. She's at the point at which she could develop and shepherd films that would give her the roles she wants, but they would be tiny-budgeted independents and she wants to make studio money. (I don't blame her for that.)

I think she's a terrific actress, though her Michelle Obama shows that she certainly has her limitations. I just think there comes a point when you have to accept that certain things aren't going to happen for you, and it's not just because of racism (though that plays a part for many black actors).

Kurt Russell once said he would have liked to have had the career of Robert Redford, but that he was happy with what he did have. Viola is complaining from a position of immense privilege, and she may want to reflect on that.

by Anonymousreply 77May 21, 2022 5:44 PM

Tiresome contrarians. Typical dataloungers.

I have never seen or have any interest seeing any films that she was in.

by Anonymousreply 79May 21, 2022 5:50 PM

R55 As if Basset wasn't the huge race baiter, herself. And she only plays angry! Not even as good as Viola. Shit, Viola can give us all kinds of things except sexual!

by Anonymousreply 80May 21, 2022 5:51 PM

r48 that is a good photo of her. Even if she was butt ugly if she was a box office draw they would cast her. The fact is she can't put butts in the seat.

by Anonymousreply 81May 21, 2022 5:57 PM

She seems angry, arrogant and self-righteous, despite not being popular or well liked.

by Anonymousreply 82May 21, 2022 6:01 PM

I’m sick of her micro-aggressions every time she needs attention.

by Anonymousreply 83May 21, 2022 6:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 86May 21, 2022 6:09 PM

I love her and think she is stunning. How about holding the door open for upcoming black actors instead of her endless complaining. Only 2% of actors make a living acting. How can everything be so terrible if she is among those 2%?

by Anonymousreply 87May 21, 2022 6:11 PM
How about holding the door open for upcoming black actors

That's the last thing she wants to do.

by Anonymousreply 88May 21, 2022 6:19 PM

I get my colored help mixed up all the time! LaTralier Jenkins-Smith is my main girl in charge of the staff and LaWanda Jones-Perkins is in charge of the kitchen and laundry areas and reports up to La Trailer . With out my glasses on I cannot distinguish between the 2 !!!

by Anonymousreply 89May 21, 2022 6:23 PM

and if some perky 23 year old blonde wanted to play the mother a 19 year old who get gunned down in a drug deal, she probably wouldn't have luck with that either.

by Anonymousreply 90May 21, 2022 6:26 PM
Tyler Perry films don't have the kinds of budgets that would pay Viola what she feels she's worth. She's at the point at which she could develop and shepherd films that would give her the roles she wants, but they would be tiny-budgeted independents and she wants to make studio money. (I don't blame her for that.)

So she wants Nancy Meyers and WB, not Tyler Perry and Tyler Perry studios. It’s a bit late for that. If she were 46, or 36, it would be a different story. She looks good for her age. Why hasn’t she worked with Ryan Clogger and Marvel?

She needs to do what Jessica Chastain did. Go to Cannes every year even if you don’t have a film opening, attend to every party, schmooze with every journalist, drape yourself over every director and network like a MFer.

Don’t go to Cannes and complain.

Some people are bottomless pits and are never ever happy. Viola is one of them.

Learn to recognize them and stay away!

by Anonymousreply 94May 21, 2022 6:32 PM

Speaking of Jessica Chastain, she is close friends with her The Help costar Octavia Spencer. She invited her to her wedding and is producing a project for them to costar. Not with Viola, though.

by Anonymousreply 102May 21, 2022 6:51 PM

Movie stars live in bubbles. Her net worth is 25 million dollars. In what way is she not incredibly privileged compared to almost everyone posting here? Boo hoo.

by Anonymousreply 103May 21, 2022 6:54 PM

She’s unlikable, a braggart and a complainer. She is the only one who constantly brings up her race.

She doesn't think she should have to do any of that work. She feels like it's owed to her because she's black and deserves reparations.

by Anonymousreply 105May 21, 2022 7:02 PM

She's more like the Black Debra Winger. A rancid cunt who directors eventually grew tired of working with, due to her miserable attitude and obnoxious behavior.

by Anonymousreply 106May 21, 2022 7:05 PM

I'm so fucking tired of this overrated cunt. Go away, bitch. You're not that talented.

by Anonymousreply 108May 21, 2022 7:07 PM

Today at my son's little league game, I couldn't tell the difference between 2 Asian mothers, 2 Hispanic boys, 2 Black coaches, and sometimes I can't tell the blonde soccer moms apart. I must have one of those recognition disorders.

Viola is being foolish in this instance. Wear a name tag if it gets you so upset.

by Anonymousreply 109May 21, 2022 7:11 PM

Viola's problem is not she's black. She's unattractive. And old.

by Anonymousreply 110May 21, 2022 7:17 PM

MInd you I don't doubt she's experienced racism, but it's funny how people identify with extremely rich celebs who probably wouldn't even speak to them without a bodyguard. There's a great deal of classism in this country few people are even willing to recognize.

by Anonymousreply 111May 21, 2022 7:23 PM

Alfre Woodard is so much more elegant and articulate and downright refined than Viola. I love her and think that she should give lessons on how it's done.

At this point I think that Viola is a bit of a fibber. She claimed that she went to school in ages old urine soaked clothes, rats ate the faces off her baby dolls, she barely ever had food to eat, had cockroaches as pets- no one noticed?! No one?! She came from a small town, right? No one just stopped by to help or maybe to beat the crap out of her parents and then call CPS?

She is claiming that a director she knew for some time called her by his maid's name. She learned of that after the fact but knew him for some time. How does that work?

The voice she has on such a large forum for bring to light issues of intolerance she is muting by being a bit of a fibber. That is ghastly and a travesty.

Please note that I am not trying to imply that she is fibbing with everything just that she is a bit of a fibber if I didn't know any better.

by Anonymousreply 113May 21, 2022 7:28 PM

Yes she's experienced racism in the film industry, but I don't care in the same way I don't care about the actresses who complain about making less than their male costars. Oh, poor you, making $3 million instead of $6 million! You're making millions of dollars playing pretend for a living. You're stratospherically lucky, experiencing a level of renown and comfort known to a very small number of people. Shut the fuck up and enjoy your success.

by Anonymousreply 114May 21, 2022 7:31 PM

She's really trying to deflect from her shitty performance as Michelle Obama. She's gotta get that sympathy again.

I'm so tired of her whining. She was a PRODUCER on this First Lady show. She could have put her ego aside and graciously offered the role to another Black actress. But, no. Viola had to hog the spotlight and miscast herself as First Lady Michelle Obama.

She was also the lead on a hit TV series on ABC, which allowed her to shoot fewer episodes than other series - for her.

She's privileged but will never admit it.

by Anonymousreply 115May 21, 2022 7:46 PM

I think people in this forum are compensating for the times they have to remain silent in public when they don't agree with something that's being called racist or privileged or whatever. There's so much you can keep inside before you start to blow up and let's face it, for the last 20 years you can't say much without being called racist or a right wing asshole, or a Republican or even a White supremacist. All you have to do is scroll up this thread and look at some of the "woke" responses. Only the silencing attempts here don't work like they do in most colleges and people will speak their minds under the protection of anonymity.

by Anonymousreply 116May 21, 2022 8:16 PM

Why is Viola Davis the new she devil on DL? What’s wrong with you guys? She a terrific actress- for my money much better that Roberts.

by Anonymousreply 117May 21, 2022 8:51 PM

My friends and I have been laughing for weeks because Viola keeps the crazy coming. We noticed the downward spiral when she complained she’d been wearing wigs for years to be accepted. And, then…continued wearing wigs when she was given covers.

Then came the stories about growing up in a sharecropper’s shack, living Anna Mae Bullock’s life (except her “rag doll” had no face) and then TRIUMPH! She buys the shanty she grew up in. Okay, girl…all your life, you’ve had to fight and everyday is a struggle. We get it.

But, she kept going and people got into her ass over the Obama mouth and she got pissed. Now, it’s a director calling her by his domestic’s name. Over three decades ago. She’ll tell us about her Pap smear next and how the OB/GYN didn’t compliment her on her cooch.

Has she faced racism in her personal and professional life? Of course. However, she’s in a position now to cast more diverse actors and make other changes that would make Hollywood more inclusive but it’s only about her. She doesn’t want more women in Hollywood that look like her…she wants to be the sole token.

Auntie Viola’s problem is that she’s gone so Hollywood, she doesn’t realize how petulant and tone deaf she’s making herself out to be. There are White actresses that would give up their left implant (that they paid for on an installment plan that includes under the desk visits) for 1/10 the success that Viola has enjoyed. There a Black actresses that she could uplift and cast but she’s the self-proclaimed Black Meryl Streep (because she doesn’t even believe in her own stand-alone talent); if we don’t offer tribute, she whines.

She has to have a team that is worried about her rankings and ravings lately. This isn’t normal.

by Anonymousreply 118May 21, 2022 9:07 PM

R118 I think at the very least her PR team has tried to address her whiny bitch attitude, but she probably dismisses them and thinks she's justified in keeping on with her constant bitch fests.

by Anonymousreply 119May 21, 2022 9:12 PM

I could totally see Viola dressing down and wearing some kind of wig to play Lori Lightfoot in movie or TV show, but then she'd fuck up the role like did with Michelle Obama and would have meltdowns when the critics would slam her.

by Anonymousreply 120May 21, 2022 9:16 PM

I looked up Viola's age. She was born in 1965 which means she probably came to LA in the late 80s/90s and had a difficult time and is still working through all that. No one in the late 80s/90s was going to hire someone who looks Viola for lead roles and it made her angry and a little bit bitter. Now that she has a level of success and fame, she's created a certain backstory for herself - probably true, but a little "heightened" for dramatic effect. Viola - savior of dark skinned black women who want to act. Let her have her thing.

by Anonymousreply 121May 21, 2022 9:19 PM
Telling a black woman to “shut up”

That isn't racist. It's telling a person who just happens to be black by sheer circumstance to shit their pie hole. Telling a black chick to shut up is like telling a white dude to shut up or an asian chick to shut up or or a latin dude to shut up. Get off the pedestal.

by Anonymousreply 122May 21, 2022 9:30 PM

It must have really annoyed her when much darker and more beautiful Lupita won an Oscar for her first film role before Viola got hers.

r101 they really nailed her with that impression

by Anonymousreply 126May 21, 2022 9:43 PM

It’s Deborah Wilson as Oprah good!

You know, I thought the whole Gratitude movement was pointless bullshit. But it probably isn’t. If you’re not happy for your achievements, what else is there but anger and bitterness?

Whoopi Goldberg is a decade older than Viola and she didn’t carry on once her movie career ebbed on the late 90s. She shrugged and went into TV, hosting and fundraising. Whoopi said on The View that she had a good run as an A-Lister, especially for someone who looked like her (she described herself as quirky and cute in her 20s, and not Hollywood gorgeous). She said she had to diversify and that having worked as a cleaner and in all kinds of jobs she didn’t consider herself to be too good to do gameshows and daytime TV. Now she has FY money.

Perhaps Viola doesn’t consider Whoopi a forebear because Whoopi has a background in comedy and Viola is classically trained. Even though their dramatic film acting skills are comparable. And even though Whoopi’s comedy was sufficiently impressive as to get her noticed by Mike Nichols and Steven Spielberg, as well as a Tony.

And the crazy old bat is still popular with her peers and respected in the industry, multiple scandals and gaffes later, precisely because of her work ethic and positive attitude. I hope Viola will be able to say the same in a decade.

by Anonymousreply 127May 21, 2022 9:53 PM

Also, r127, Whoopi is perhaps the better actress: she's been astonishingly good at both comedy and drama in the past, whereas I've yet to see Viola play comedy.

by Anonymousreply 128May 21, 2022 9:58 PM

I wonder how Viola would do playing Whoopi in a biopic.

by Anonymousreply 129May 21, 2022 9:58 PM

Huh. I've laughed at everything I've seen her in r128.

by Anonymousreply 130May 21, 2022 9:59 PM

Whoopi has a sense of clarity that a lot of people lack about certain matters related to Hollywood and a career in entertainment. You would think someone, Viola's age, would have a similar clarity about what Hollywood is.

by Anonymousreply 131May 21, 2022 10:05 PM

Viola doesn't have much warmth and I can't see her pulling a role like Delores in Sister Act the way Whoopi made it work.

by Anonymousreply 132May 21, 2022 10:06 PM

Viola Davis is only happy bitching, whining and victimizing herself.

This is why everyone enjoys making fun of her. Didn't she get to go to Julliard?

When is she going to acknowledge her privilege?

by Anonymousreply 133May 21, 2022 10:47 PM

I actually like Viola Davis but I have no idea why she would consider herself in the same level as Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts. That's where her mental issues begin. Those two women are outliers. You are not Viola. When you can accomplish what they did for women then you can bitch, and bitch and bitch some more.

by Anonymousreply 134May 21, 2022 11:56 PM

Julia Roberts is a fucking hag who hasn't been relevant in 20 years and who's oscar win is largely considered a joke.

Meryl is an overrated bore who has long worn out her welcome, and despite her screen success, has a forgettable, almost nonexistent stage career.

Viola is a Tony, Emmy and Oscar winning actress who is the arguably the most important actress of the last ten years. Her career has given her plaudits in every major acting arena. She has helped redefine each of the mediums she has appeared in.

by Anonymousreply 135May 22, 2022 12:39 AM

Okay Viola, R135.

by Anonymousreply 136May 22, 2022 12:42 AM

I agree that Viola should stop calling herself the black Merrill.

She's more in the league of a Jessica Lange and Glenn Close who have succeeded in all the major arenas in acting and have been showered with all the major acting awards.

Merrill doesn't have a Tony.

I was surprised that Whoopi was good in The Stand.

by Anonymousreply 143May 22, 2022 1:13 AM

R135 then it's Viola who should keep other women's names out of her fucking mouth. She is neither an equal or peer of Streep or Roberts based on race. They are are all women yet only one is constantly wringing her hands about how unfair her life has been. She obviously has an issue with Meryl and Julia's successes. But neither give her a second's thought .

It was a stupid movie and book but the public went to go see their favorite actress in that role. It was a horrible film and project but it made money worldwide because the people liked the actress. No one has EVER liked Viola like that. She sounds like a jealous bitch.

AND she’s full figured, an extra minority box even you can’t check! This woman is positively exhausting, just seeing her name makes me want to lie down.

I don't think Jessica's character in The Help ever interacted with Viola's character. I can maybe see why Jessica and Octavia are friends. But, who knows maybe Viola was whiner on the set and turned people off. Also, Viola has publicly stated her regret about being in The Help. Bryce Dallas Howard also said a couple of years ago that if The Help had been made in 2020, she wouldn't have starred in it and she called it a white savior film. I have wondered if Jessica, Octavia, and Emma Stone felt like they were sort of thrown under the bus by Viola and Bryce's comments.

by Anonymousreply 176May 22, 2022 3:19 AM

R9 Encore! Encore!

“Look, Viola isn’t ugly, she can be made up to look really cute on talk shows and in magazines.

She doesn’t have the bone structure or edgy cool factor of Jada Pinkett or Gabrielle Union.”

by Anonymousreply 177May 22, 2022 3:25 AM

Maybe I am heartless, IDK, but this sounds like she's making mountains out of ant hills. Maybe she "needed" some attention? What's the big deal? All my life my Dad has screwed my name. He'd combine my nickname with one of my brothers' names or with my Mama's name. ALL THE TIME. My own Dad. Viola Davis is a delicate doily, not a tortured actress. She's just "acting" like a victim b/c she's gotten used to all the interest in her over the past few weeks. If she keeps complaining/ acting like a victim of white men in her industry who dared to get her name wrong, those film makers are gonna pass over her for roles.

by Anonymousreply 178May 22, 2022 3:26 AM

Girl, you ARE an actress.

by Anonymousreply 179May 22, 2022 4:29 AM

I wonder if she's jealous of Octavia, who won the Oscar first and seems to be beloved in the industry and by audiences, too - I have a hard time imagining Viola doing something as wickedly absurd as Ma.

by Anonymousreply 180May 22, 2022 4:48 AM

Octavia in Ma will only become more iconic as time goes on.

by Anonymousreply 181May 22, 2022 4:56 AM

I agree with someone upthread. WHEN will Viola acknowledge her privilege???!!!

by Anonymousreply 182May 22, 2022 4:57 AM

People just can’t stand Viola. She brought it on herself. I wouldn’t be surprised if her career is now over.

by Anonymousreply 183May 22, 2022 5:18 AM

What's her obsession with being seen as sexually desirable? Low self esteem?

by Anonymousreply 184May 22, 2022 5:18 AM

If she wants to be paired in an onscreen sexual relationship with George Clooney or Tom Cruise or Antonio Banderas or Richard Gere by a major studio and be paid accordingly, she needs to produce an indie version of that film herself and hope audiences and critics like it before a media conglomerate will shell out the big bucks and the VIP treatment for her.

She should be taking meetings with Euro-kinksters like Paul Verhoeven, not whining at press conferences. She needs to be partying with Almodovar, not scolding her potential employers for not appreciating her sexual and spiritual journey.

by Anonymousreply 185May 22, 2022 1:03 PM

R184 I'm guessing low self esteem or possible envy towards other actresses in her age group who still seen as sex symbols. It's funny how Viola is so desperate to be seen as sexually desirable when other actresses who aren't extremely good looking or even odd looking accept their careers for what they are. Judy Greer is the type of actress who knows that's she's odd looking and not sexually desirable, but has clearly embraced being a character actress. Viola is just someone who despite having won awards and been in major productions still isn't fucking happy. She has some whiny attitude that Constance Wu has.

by Anonymousreply 186May 22, 2022 1:06 PM

^^^ I meant to type "same whiny attitude"

by Anonymousreply 187May 22, 2022 1:45 PM

MISS Davis is insufferable!

by Anonymousreply 188May 22, 2022 1:53 PM

Any reasonable point this woman might attempt to make is easily overshadowed by her galling ego.

The woman is madly in love with the sound of her own voice.

by Anonymousreply 189May 22, 2022 2:23 PM

Her book is already falling down the best seller list.

by Anonymousreply 190May 22, 2022 2:35 PM
Her book is already falling down the best seller list.

Which is why she's trying so hard to generate new interest.

by Anonymousreply 191May 22, 2022 2:37 PM

I think some people especially women turn to a lot of celebrity memoirs as inspiration. But, when you have someone like Viola who is now wealthy bitching over various things that many women can't relate to, then I could see why some people would stop buying a celeb's memoir.

by Anonymousreply 192May 22, 2022 2:39 PM

Yea Viola, put your millions where your mouth is and produce some great little books or scripts like many other older actresses do.

by Anonymousreply 193May 22, 2022 2:49 PM

R193 lol. I have to say that while I'm not a huge Reese Witherspoon fan. I have respect for her because she doesn't cast herself in projects she produces. Witherspoon also seems less insufferable than Viola.

by Anonymousreply 194May 22, 2022 2:55 PM

R194 I agree, she doesn't always put herself it these.

by Anonymousreply 195May 22, 2022 2:58 PM

Now we're just trolling.
I have to say that while I'm not a huge Reese Witherspoon fan. I have respect for her because she doesn't cast herself in projects she produces

She's put herself in every project she's done.
Witherspoon also seems less insufferable than Viola.

Please. Witherspoon is a the definition of a grade A cunt.

by Anonymousreply 196May 22, 2022 3:00 PM

You're a liar, R196. Reese produced Gone Girl and didn't cast herself. The director said she was wrong for the part and she accepted that and gave the role to Rosamund Pike who got an Oscar nomination for it.

by Anonymousreply 197May 22, 2022 3:02 PM

You know, she narrated the audiobook of her memoir which means she’ll likely be up for a Grammy next year.

Imagine if her EGOT is denied by Selma Blair or Molly Shannon.

by Anonymousreply 198May 22, 2022 3:05 PM

R197 said it, Reese was dying to play that plum role but accepted Fincher's word and let it go to Pike. I actually think she would have been great in it

by Anonymousreply 199May 22, 2022 3:06 PM

Getting a Grammy for spoken word should not count towards EGOT status. Genuine EGOTs should be people like Liza, Glennie, Diana, Angela Lansbury, etc who have conquered music (or musical theatre), film and TV. Not read an audio book.

by Anonymousreply 200May 22, 2022 3:08 PM

If Viola got an EGOT she still wouldn't be satisfied.

by Anonymousreply 201May 22, 2022 3:12 PM

R196 Witherspoon was a producer on Lucy in the Sky and that Apple TV plus show Truth Be Told. She didn't have onscreen roles in those projects.

by Anonymousreply 202May 22, 2022 3:14 PM
[R197] said it, Reese was dying to play that plum role but accepted Fincher's word and let it go to Pike. I actually think she would have been great in it

I think she would been better as Amy because of how the twist was revealed and how certain things that turned out not to be true. The problem is that Rosamund Pike is too creepy and weird.

by Anonymousreply 203May 22, 2022 3:16 PM

Wasn't traveling to fuck what How Stella Got Her Groove Back about?

As usual with Miss Davis, Angela Bassett already proved it's doable.

by Anonymousreply 204May 22, 2022 3:16 PM

Reese Witherdspoon and her elfin features are the very definition of frau bait crapola.

by Anonymousreply 205May 22, 2022 3:18 PM

You know, both Reese and Viola can be cunts. There can be more than one cunt. No need to fight.

by Anonymousreply 206May 22, 2022 3:20 PM

"Hey, Beulah, we'd like to invite you to the set."

by Anonymousreply 207May 22, 2022 3:25 PM

People like to watch Julia Roberts?

Who are these people? I have never met them at all.

Going to see a film which happens to have her in it is not the same thing. She's been nearly as unavoidable over the years as Tom Cruise.

I like Viola as an actress. I will say this--she needs to shut up and focus on the work. And not do bullshit like "Runaway Bride". Why anyone would be complaining about a totally bygone world of romcom stardom is beyond me. She could have a meaningful career. Just DON'T do what those basic white bitches did. They are boring as hell on screen, and Viola Davis is not.

by Anonymousreply 208May 22, 2022 3:25 PM

R208 if Viola was offered romcoms, horror and sci-fi she'd then complain she wasn't taken seriously as an actress and given quality dramas.

by Anonymousreply 209May 22, 2022 3:34 PM
Getting a Grammy for spoken word should not count towards EGOT status.

If "A Strange Loop" wins Best Musical, then Jennifer Hudson will have completed her EGOT—even though the Tony will have come for merely writing a check.

by Anonymousreply 210May 22, 2022 3:36 PM

Viola can do horror, and anyone that can genuinely act can do sci fi. It's a broad category. She can even do sci fi horror.

by Anonymousreply 211May 22, 2022 3:46 PM

I still think Oprah should have been Amanda Waller.

by Anonymousreply 212May 22, 2022 3:47 PM

Has Viola ever got her tits out on film?

by Anonymousreply 213May 22, 2022 3:52 PM
Speaking to Vanity Fair she compared her career - and those of other "unknown, faceless" black actresses who represent earlier versions of herself - to "fabulous white actresses" like Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Stewart who've had "a wonderful role for each stage of their lives, that brought them to the stage they are now. We can't say that for many actors of colour"

In Vanity Fair, she compared herself - someone who got screen roles in her 30s - to Stone, Witherspoon and Stewart, who started acting in their teens, and were recognised as more interesting than their peers and future stars even then. You can’t say that of many actors of colour, true, but you can’t say that for many actors full stop.

She’s getting ridiculous. Viola had a traumatic childhood. I can’t imagine how revolting it was for her to be raped by her brother and going to school stinking of piss because her parents didn’t teach her to bathe. But it’s put a chip on her shoulder that is blocking her eyesight. She’s so successful she can’t enjoy it because she didn’t have the early career of Julia Roberts or Kristen Stewart, because people don’t see her as a sexual being, because they don’t pay her enough.

She needs therapy. A lot of it.

Viola's 56. Tell me which white 56 year old actresses are being cast in sexy roles?

by Anonymousreply 215May 22, 2022 4:18 PM

[R170] go eat Viola's rancid cooch, you perpetually offended woke bastard!

by Anonymousreply 216May 22, 2022 5:32 PM

Why is it such a “betrayal” now having starred in THE HELP (which gave Viola a coveted lead actress nomination, mind you)? The film pretty accurately portrayed the struggles of the AA characters at the time with a lot of dignity. And it was based on a very popular novel of the time and was *always* going to have a film adaptation. Every book club in the early 2010s read that book, even my all-gay one.

I think it’s denigrating to people like Octavia who won a well-deserved Oscar for the same film and launched the second chapter of her career. Go shit on one of your other failures, Viola (such as WIDOWS - where’s her hate for that mountain of shit?) It also includes (I believe) the most number of Oscar-winning actresses (Davis, Spencer, Janney, Stone, Steenbergen, Chastain, Spacek, etc.) so there’s some kind of record there.

by Anonymousreply 217May 22, 2022 10:05 PM

If she's denigrating her role in The Help, she's denigrating all the thousands of black women who had to work as maids to survive.

She's just trying to sell her book and change the subject from her lousy reviews for playing Michelle Obama.

by Anonymousreply 218May 22, 2022 10:20 PM

Jennifer Lopez and other non-black actresses are much worse than Viola but don’t receive the same level of hate. This is life as a black woman.

by Anonymousreply 219May 22, 2022 10:25 PM

I think that’s a little reductive, R219. Most of the comments here are responding directly to what Viola has been putting out there in the press of late. Lots of grudges, negativity, and flip-flopping (you can believe she just LOVED critics when they were praising her).

Where is the hate for Alfre Woodard if this was just about people specifically targeting Viola because of the color of her skin? Oh, that’s right. It doesn’t exist. Because Alfre doesn’t act like a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 220May 22, 2022 10:33 PM

Or Angela Basset ,Regina King,Pam Grier,Quenn Latifah etc, etc, etc.

by Anonymousreply 221May 22, 2022 11:06 PM

Alfre Woodard is underrated and should have had a bigger career.

by Anonymousreply 222May 23, 2022 1:20 AM

Alfre Woodard was robbed of nominations for Passion Fish and Clemency. She was also very effective in an interesting role in 12 Years a Slave.

by Anonymousreply 223May 23, 2022 1:42 AM

I didn’t know that she had been raped! That’s awful.

by Anonymousreply 224May 23, 2022 1:46 AM

R223 I really liked Clemency. I did wonder why didn't become an Oscar contender at least for Woodard.

by Anonymousreply 225May 23, 2022 1:49 AM

So because of this thread I listened to her podcast with Brené Brown on Spotify. She wrote her memoir during lockdown because she realised in spite of her Tony and her Oscar and her daughter and husband (who she really seems to adore) she was still empty and unhappy. She’s also lonely - she said she doesn’t have deep friendship (what the Fraus call a Tribe). It goes back to her being bullied a child for being dark and ugly and not being told she is beautiful. She’s been in therapy since her Juilliard days. And she’s aware she ought to be grateful for her very successful career. But she’s fed up of walking into a room and putting on a brave face and pretending she’s not suffering.

I think that’s why she wants to make this middle-aged fuckfest movie. That if her spiritual/sexual/romantic fantasy is filmed, that if she is considered not just talented and fierce but as sensual and desirable by the cinema-going world, the demons of that damaged little girl will be exorcised and she’ll finally be happy.

by Anonymousreply 229May 23, 2022 4:26 PM

Why does she have to drag the public into this? Work it out in therapy, bitch.

I have a hard time feeling bad for a multi-millionaire who has two Tonys and an Oscar at home.

by Anonymousreply 232May 23, 2022 4:39 PM

Poor Alfre doesn’t have a suffering story to milk like viola does. She grew up middle class in Tulsa and went to a private high school. She was one of the few black students there but was very popular.

by Anonymousreply 238May 23, 2022 5:31 PM

Well, they all look alike, you know.l

by Anonymousreply 248May 23, 2022 6:43 PM

Isabelle Huppert in old age (though she doesn't look it) is now considered a sex symbol. When she was young she only played dowdy, plain characters who got abused. See La Dentelliere. There's hope yet for Viola!

by Anonymousreply 263May 23, 2022 9:01 PM

Viola

by Anonymousreply 264May 23, 2022 10:17 PM

She ain't no viola - she's a whole big damned bass fiddle.

by Anonymousreply 265May 23, 2022 11:30 PM

Just wondering, but why does Viola think that she should have star vehicles created for her that are romantic comedies or "sexy" films? I find her comments odd, because she has not shown any box office appeal. Yes, she is talented and has the stature of a rewarded actress, but why does she have a belief that she is a big star or is somehow is entitled to be a big star? It's show business, which is purely profit oriented. Star have to bankable to be cast in things, especially something like a romantic comedy, otherwise the studio loses money. Am I missing something here? I literally do not understand her gripes because her range is very limited.

by Anonymousreply 266May 24, 2022 12:54 AM

Why doesn’t she grease herself up again and do a Ma Rainey sequel?

by Anonymousreply 267May 24, 2022 1:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 268May 24, 2022 1:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 269May 24, 2022 1:42 AM
Just wondering, but why does Viola think that she should have star vehicles created for her that are romantic comedies or "sexy" films?

Because she her loving husband and daughter and winning the Triple Crown of Acting hasn’t brought her the happiness she seeks, she has decided that money and sexual adulation in her working life will make up for the lack of money and lack of people telling her she was pretty in her early life.

It’s a teenage mentality. And it won’t help.

by Anonymousreply 270May 24, 2022 1:55 AM

I think we need to put Viola in a time capsule and have her get a good reality check by people like, .....say, ......Diana Sands, Ruby Dee, Lorraine Hansbury..... I mean can you imagine??

While Molly isn't an A lister, she has still remained humble and down to earth. I would have rather take someone like Molly Shannon over Viola Davis any day now.

by Anonymousreply 284May 25, 2022 5:56 PM

I'm still not buying the maid's name story. But, even if it did it happen, couldn't have it just been a harmless mistake? Sometimes people from one aspect of life will remind you of people from other aspects of life and it's not due to cruelty or racism. Sometimes people make small blunders.

by Anonymousreply 285May 26, 2022 12:25 AM
But, even if it did it happen, couldn't have it just been a harmless mistake? Sometimes people from one aspect of life will remind you of people from other aspects of life and it's not due to cruelty or racism.

Basically, no, and I’ve made fun of Viola’s self appointed sex goddess status plenty. It’s one thing to think Person X looks like Person Y and keep it to yourself. It’s not harmless to announce to a black woman she reminds you of/call her by the name of your maid Aunt Jemima because they look so similar, especially in a work environment where you may potentially employ her. It’s incredibly fucking rude and snide for reasons that are obvious to anyone who isn’t autistic.

by Anonymousreply 286May 26, 2022 1:46 AM

Pull the stick out of your ass R286. He may very well have been thinking of his maid when he spoke to her, maybe to tell her to put more starch in his shirts. Not because she was black, but because he was talki8ng to Viola, who I guarantee is a crashing bore to speak to. Youve never accidentally called someone by their wrong name ?

by Anonymousreply 287May 26, 2022 2:29 AM

It’s so easy to go through life not calling a black woman the name of my maid. Not calling an Indian man Ghandi. Not calling a banker with a big nose Hymie. Not calling someone with Achondroplasia Tyrion.

by Anonymousreply 288May 26, 2022 2:54 AM

There have been lots of actors and actresses, who were plain looking or not attractive as the big name stars, who spent their whole career in supporting roles.

This is true of both men and women.

So why is VD's situation so much worse than those others? Why must the cause of her perceived situation be due to race?

The history of Hollywood is filled with actors whose looks determined the level of their success or failure.

by Anonymousreply 289May 26, 2022 4:33 AM

VD has some kind of bizarre entitlement complex regarding "sexy roles". She got her wish as she will be starring in a movie adaptation of a Terry McMillian book. If that movie flops like some movie adaptations do, Viola will pull the whining antics like she did in response to criticism of her Michelle Obama portrayal.

There was a horror movie podcast I listened to several years ago called Horny 4 Horror which was hosted by three comedians. One of them was Betsy Sodaro who is quite odd looking. She made some comment in an episode that a lot of the roles she auditions are for "hag looking" women. Sodaro laughed about of it, of course. You got the sense that she accepts that certain roles are niche for her. Sodaro's friend circle in the entertainment industry consists of people like Lauren Lapkus, D'Arcy Carden, Mary Holland, and several other comedians who are odd or plain looking and do a lot of supporting roles. I have noticed from interviews with those actresses that they also know comedy supporting roles are for them and they don't try to force or bully others into giving them roles they aren't suited for. Sodaro could easily be whining about having to audition for "hag looking" women roles to magazines and crying about how she's not getting chance for certain roles. She just stays quiet and laughs things off.

🎶I'm beautiful, I'm beautiful

I'm beautiful, it's true

I saw my face, in a crowded place

And I don't know what to do

'Cause I'll never be with ME 🎶

by Anonymousreply 291May 26, 2022 2:28 PM

Viola needs to take her face for a shite

by Anonymousreply 292May 26, 2022 4:11 PM

Not reading the whole thread but without knowing what the maid looks like I can’t call it racist. I mean if the maid looks a lot like her is is understandable.

by Anonymousreply 293May 26, 2022 4:32 PM

R293 I agree. Viola should try track down the maid as "receipts".

by Anonymousreply 294May 27, 2022 1:53 AM

Viola on why she didn't wear a wig to the Oscars (when she lost to me.) She wanted to step on herself.

by Anonymousreply 295May 28, 2022 7:07 AM

The fact that Viola declared herself the "black Meryl" should have marked the end of her career—not because she's a bad actress (better or worse than Meryl, it doesn't even matter), but because it's in bad taste, and proves that she is a tacky, unprofessional, ego-driven cunt. Nobody cares which white actress she thinks she's the black equivalent to except for Viola.

by Anonymousreply 296May 28, 2022 7:25 AM

Aside from being some supreme thespian like Meryl Streep she thinks she is every bit the movie star that Julia Roberts is.

by Anonymousreply 297May 28, 2022 7:29 AM

Viola's success made her suffer (too)

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 298May 28, 2022 7:49 AM

She’s worried about how wigs made it seem she was ashamed of being a “dark-skinned woman with curly hair” but not worried about that dusty-looking dye job.

Okay, sis.

by Anonymousreply 299May 28, 2022 7:56 AM

Meryl and Julia Roberts are white but that has nothing to do with Viola's painful grievances. I still don't get why she thinks she is in that caliber of actresses. Is she that delusional?

by Anonymousreply 300May 28, 2022 8:02 AM

"(Black maids stopped being a thing in about 1967)."

Not all racists are as up to date as you, dear.

by Anonymousreply 301May 28, 2022 9:43 AM

Has anyone watched her Oprah special on Netflix?

by Anonymousreply 302May 28, 2022 9:17 PM

“Hazel” or “Florida?”

by Anonymousreply 303May 28, 2022 9:29 PM

Aren't all maids called Rosario?

by Anonymousreply 304May 28, 2022 10:02 PM

R303 Being compared to Shirley Booth or Esther Rolle is no insult. Booth had the triple crown of acting. Rolle was also an Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress.

by Anonymousreply 305May 28, 2022 10:03 PM

Was the maid's name...Viola?

by Anonymousreply 306May 28, 2022 10:05 PM

Call Me By Your Maid’s Name

by Anonymousreply 307May 28, 2022 10:10 PM

Why are the Oscars so traumatic for Viola? Maybe she should officially withdraw her name from competition if it’s all such a psychological burden for her.

by Anonymousreply 308May 28, 2022 10:11 PM

Viola isn't Meryl Streep - the only "actress" she is better than is Phylicia Rashad....barely. But Viola wins in the pretentious department over even PR.

by Anonymousreply 309May 29, 2022 1:46 AM

Viola, even when nominated for an Oscar doesn't feel like she gets the same treatment that when a Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock is nominated.

by Anonymousreply 310May 29, 2022 2:29 AM

Call her by my name.

by Anonymousreply 311May 29, 2022 2:30 AM

Viola has twice won SAG and then failed to parlay that win into an Oscar. I think that is a record. Poor Viola.

by Anonymousreply 312May 29, 2022 2:31 AM

Viola is a Christian. Yet one of the central tenets of Christianity is that earthly things like possessions and money and acclaim and attention and flattery will not make us happy.

She needs a Come To Jesus moment.

by Anonymousreply 313May 29, 2022 2:33 AM

R310 I honestly don't think its race based. But those two are America's princesses. Of curse they are gonna be treated supremely special. Why would Violas care?

by Anonymousreply 314May 29, 2022 2:34 AM

His maid is named Biola.

by Anonymousreply 315May 29, 2022 2:42 AM

When did Viola headline a movie in July or at Christmas and open with 20-30 million profits? She doesn't need to be comparing herself to other stars when she's not even really a star.

by Anonymousreply 316May 29, 2022 2:46 AM

What's astounding is that after all this time as a well-known person in films, stage and tv, Viola still has developed no sense of awareness that she is a total downer. She's a chronic whiner and really almost wholly without humor or perspective.

It is astounding to me she has not figured out how to just "play the game" a little by now, or choose to just STFU every so often!

by Anonymousreply 317May 29, 2022 3:12 AM
Call Me By Your Maid’s Name

And I'll call you by mine.

by Anonymousreply 318May 29, 2022 3:25 AM

She would have been great in "Mamma Mia!"

by Anonymousreply 319May 29, 2022 3:31 AM

Does Viola really think she's the black version of Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts combined?

by Anonymousreply 320May 29, 2022 3:48 AM

Was the director’s maid named “Black Cunt” or “Basic Bitch”?

by Anonymousreply 321May 29, 2022 5:03 AM

^DEDDDDD

by Anonymousreply 322May 29, 2022 2:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 323May 29, 2022 3:13 PM

The maid's name was "Winnie", but Viola heard "Whiney" and got offended.

Deeply offended!

by Anonymousreply 324May 30, 2022 2:21 AM

Where and when did Viola actually refer to herself as the black Meryl Streep?

by Anonymousreply 325May 30, 2022 2:34 AM

When exactly did American Movie goers ever attend a Viola Davis film? Oh but they might be racist for not. Is she fucking serious?

by Anonymousreply 327May 30, 2022 4:40 AM

I wouldn't be surprised if she hits a career slump. Her constant combitching is bound to backfire on her at some point.

by Anonymousreply 328May 30, 2022 4:46 AM

Viola always forgets that she did not become well known until her 40's. And just because she had a hit TV show in her 40's does not necessarily translate to later success as a film star.

Streep was in Kramer v. Kramer and then a ton of other big movies. Sigourney was also a big star thanks to the Alien movies. Viola's comparisons to them make no sense. She is outraged because she feels she SHOULD be seen as their equal, because she went to a fancy school, has the Tony, blah, blah, blah. But she hasn't led a film to success at the box office, so her gripes are tiresome. She has a movie coming out in the fall, and it fails, I am sure it will be someone else' fault.

by Anonymousreply 329May 30, 2022 5:31 AM

Interesting that she disses The Help today, but it remains her biggest hit in a lead role, grossing $169 million in the US and $213 million worldwide. None of her other lead role films come close -- if you count Fences as a lead role, it's second at $57 million US.

by Anonymousreply 330May 30, 2022 1:48 PM

Viola's really having a pretty shitty life.

Poor Viola.

by Anonymousreply 331May 30, 2022 2:07 PM

R326 holy crap that was painful to watch

by Anonymousreply 332May 30, 2022 3:09 PM

When I was a kid, my mother, when distracted, would sometimes call me by our maid's name. I never took it personally because my mother also called me by my sibling's names now and then. As the youngest in the household, I just appreciated being noticed at all.

by Anonymousreply 333May 30, 2022 3:53 PM

The maids name was Viola!

by Anonymousreply 334May 30, 2022 3:59 PM

My grandmother routinely ran through the list of granchildren before she hit the jackpot. These days, she wouldn't even have to sort the boys and girls if she didn't want to.
When did Viola headline a movie in July or at Christmas and open with 20-30 million profits? She doesn't need to be comparing herself to other stars when she's not even really a star.

I crack up at this because she is so desperate to be big box office headliner, but she just can't get that she's not in that category. She had supporting role in Suicide Squad which did well at the box office, but I doubt she was even appeased by that because she wasn't the lead. I wonder if she even truly liked by her Suicide Squad castmates other than Will Smith.

by Anonymousreply 338May 31, 2022 1:12 PM

Will who?

by Anonymousreply 339May 31, 2022 6:11 PM
Queen latifah has always been real as fuck and never complained about all the opportunities she’s gotten.

Queen Latifah is someone who I hope gets an Oscar someday. She was terrific in Chicago, but I had the feeling she wasn't going to win.

by Anonymousreply 345July 14, 2022 3:42 AM

I was going to write an actual response to the previous post, but autocorrect changed the stage name of Dana Owens to both Queen Latinas and Queen Latvians, and I didn’t want to risk cursing her with a DataLounge nickname.

by Anonymousreply 346July 14, 2022 3:53 AM

Can I shit in her wig?

by Anonymousreply 347July 14, 2022 4:10 AM

Would someone please give Angela Bassett back her career? Stop casting Viola. Stop listening to Viola. Stop responding to Viola. Replace Viola with Angela!

by Anonymousreply 348July 14, 2022 4:19 AM

When black Karens attack.

by Anonymousreply 349July 14, 2022 4:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 350July 14, 2022 4:26 AM

I love Viola and think she is a better actress than both Streep and Roberts but she doesn’t yet have either one of their stature. The Julia Roberts juggernaut was unique, I can’t think of any other actress equaling it.

by Anonymousreply 351July 14, 2022 5:48 AM

R351 Viola doesn't have the range of Streep.

Is the no thread on the trailer for her new movie The Woman King? She's half naked in it

by Anonymousreply 352July 14, 2022 7:02 AM

R348 Angela Bassett doesn't appear to have the ego Viola has.

R352 I saw the trailer for The Woman King a couple of days ago and it would be hilarious if it ends up being a flop.

by Anonymousreply 353July 14, 2022 2:19 PM

I am sure if The Woman King flops, Viola will have an even heavier chip on her sexy old shoulder.

by Anonymousreply 354July 14, 2022 2:45 PM

Viola's only Oscar worthy is playing Professional Victim: Angry Black Woman.

She should get both Oscar and Razzie.

by Anonymousreply 355July 14, 2022 4:53 PM

Angela has a nice gig on 911 and aint got time for all that blame game, racism shit. I adore Angela Basset, always have.

"Oh, Beulah!... Er, I mean, Calpurnia!... no, scratch that, I mean, Berenice!... uh, [italic]Viola![/italic]"

by Anonymousreply 357July 14, 2022 5:37 PM

She has every right to speak her mind, but she should choose her battles. She'll be labeled as "difficult", and will lose prime projects. That's the sad reality.

by Anonymousreply 358July 14, 2022 6:45 PM

r348 Yes, bring Ms. Bassett back to scifi films.

by Anonymousreply 359July 14, 2022 6:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 360July 14, 2022 6:51 PM

That's sweet of you all to think of me, but I'm actually busy right now filming stuff people will actually watch.

by Anonymousreply 361July 14, 2022 6:52 PM

Meg Ryan, r351. Only Meg couldn't sustain it and it was taken over by Bullock.

by Anonymousreply 362July 14, 2022 6:54 PM

r358 That's a biz all on its own... just look at who her friends are, who she chooses to diss and who she chooses to put her name on the line to defend. Samuel J has that problem, too, but he has versatility as an actor. .. people overlook his kooky (even by black standards) politics. They seem to be somewhere between ados and NOI but too socially liberal for either.
