Classic Rock Songs You Are Sick to Death Of

Let's name them. I'll go first: "Hotel California". I only need to hear the opening notes and I hit the skip button!

by Anonymousreply 196May 25, 2022 5:25 AM

(Don't Fear)The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult

by Anonymousreply 1May 20, 2022 2:09 PM

Much as I love Fleetwood Mac, I would be OK if I never heard "Dreams" again for the rest of my life.

by Anonymousreply 2May 20, 2022 2:54 PM

Anything by Bob Seeger or Meatloaf.

by Anonymousreply 3May 20, 2022 3:00 PM

Everything by Madonna except "Like a Prayer."

by Anonymousreply 4May 20, 2022 3:02 PM

Sweet Home Alabama

Stairway to Heaven

by Anonymousreply 5May 20, 2022 3:09 PM

R4 wandered in from another thread. Classic Rock?

by Anonymousreply 6May 20, 2022 3:12 PM

A Whiter Shade of Pale.

by Anonymousreply 7May 20, 2022 3:27 PM

I'm not tired of Hotel California but I could live the rest of my days without Take it Easy from the Eagles or Don't Stop Believin' from Journey (and I love Journey but am so SICK of this song)

Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow - Fleetwood Mac - Clinton campaign used it and I like them but it was everywhere

Bob Seger "Like a Rock" - those Chevy Commercials. YUCK

by Anonymousreply 8May 20, 2022 3:30 PM

Seger's Old Time Rock n Roll was killed by too many weddings.

by Anonymousreply 9May 20, 2022 3:44 PM

Two by Elton John: "Crocodile Rock" and "Sad Songs." Cannot ABIDE them.

by Anonymousreply 10May 20, 2022 3:46 PM

Free Bird

by Anonymousreply 11May 20, 2022 3:52 PM

Sweet Goddamn Home Alabama

Piano Man

Everything by Tom Petty

by Anonymousreply 12May 20, 2022 3:55 PM

Born to be Wild

Don't Fear the Reaper

Horse With No Name

by Anonymousreply 13May 20, 2022 3:56 PM

Centerfield.

by Anonymousreply 14May 20, 2022 3:58 PM

You Are the Sunshine of my Life. Also killed by weddings.

by Anonymousreply 15May 20, 2022 4:01 PM

All of them.

I worked in a tourist town and street performers and live bands playing on restaurant patios never went beyond 1980 and just played the most generic classic rock oldies that become insufferable. It’s like it’s not even music to me.

I’d say out of all of them, I hate “Sweet Caroline”. Insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 16May 20, 2022 4:27 PM

R8 OK quick question.

Was “Don’t Stop Believin’” that big of a hit? They play it on the radio every 3 songs and it’s everywhere, you would think it’s the best selling most successful song of all time.

It’s inescapable.

by Anonymousreply 17May 20, 2022 4:30 PM

[quote] Was “Don’t Stop Believin’” that big of a hit? They play it on the radio every 3 songs and it’s everywhere, you would think it’s the best selling most successful song of all time.

I am not R8, but I can tell you it was a hit but not even the biggest hit from the Escape album. Both Who's Crying Now and Open Arms made the top 5, while DSB went to #9.

by Anonymousreply 18May 20, 2022 4:51 PM

Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting is possibly the shittiest song. Annoying song, the fuzz guitar makes me want to shoot something.

by Anonymousreply 19May 20, 2022 5:06 PM

Some of these songs were shitty from the start, e.g., "Like a Rock," "Don't Stop Believing," and "Centerfield."

And yes, I do like Bob Seger ("Night Moves"), Journey ("Lights"), and Creedence (not so sure about Fogerty as a solo act).

by Anonymousreply 20May 20, 2022 5:12 PM

Yesterday

by Anonymousreply 21May 20, 2022 5:14 PM

I Love Rock & Roll by Joan Jett.

by Anonymousreply 22May 20, 2022 5:30 PM

My heart sank when I heard "Sweet Child O' Mine" in the "Thor Love and Thunder" trailer.

by Anonymousreply 23May 20, 2022 5:40 PM

Eleanor Rigby

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Lay Lady Lay

Ain't No Mountain High Enough

Barbara Ann

by Anonymousreply 24May 20, 2022 5:43 PM

Anything by Tom Petty or Def Leppard.

by Anonymousreply 25May 20, 2022 5:46 PM

Most Beach 🏖 Boy songs

by Anonymousreply 26May 20, 2022 5:47 PM

I Can’t Get No Satisfaction

by Anonymousreply 27May 20, 2022 5:49 PM

Stairway to Heaven.

Ditto R27.

Both of these bands have much better songs that get little air play. The Stones have She's like a Rainbow and Paint it Black.

by Anonymousreply 28May 20, 2022 6:10 PM

Most, if not all.

I have little desire to listen to music at 59 that I listened to at 16.

by Anonymousreply 29May 20, 2022 6:25 PM

Yes a million times (or roughly the times I've heard it) for Hotel California. It's made me hate The Eagles.

Couldn't agree more, OP.

by Anonymousreply 30May 20, 2022 6:38 PM

Your "Jack" station should just spend the money for a focus group, OP.

by Anonymousreply 31May 20, 2022 6:40 PM

What's a "Jack" station, r31?

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2022 6:42 PM

They, ahem, "play what we want" as long as it's been extremely researched and vetted. Typical "Jack" station has about 1000 slightly eclectic classic songs in rotation.

by Anonymousreply 33May 20, 2022 6:47 PM

Owner of a Lonely Heart. What a fucking garbage song

by Anonymousreply 34May 20, 2022 6:49 PM

Thanks, r33. I don't listen to radio anymore, other than my local PBS classical station. I wasn't even sure what "classic rock" means (I'm the one who posted Madonna).

by Anonymousreply 35May 20, 2022 6:51 PM

Hotel California

American Pie

Old Time Rock & Roll

Piano Man

I'm almost 50 and these songs have been beaten into the ground for most of my life. "Don't Stop Believin" only really became inescapable about 15 years ago (maybe because of The Sopranos) but that's firmly in this camp now as well. For some reason I give "Stairway" a pass.

by Anonymousreply 36May 20, 2022 6:52 PM

Don't Stop Believin' got a second wind when it was featured on the Sopranos finale episode.

by Anonymousreply 37May 20, 2022 6:52 PM

I love Queen but "We Are the Champions" is the one song I wish could be scrubbed from their catalogue.

by Anonymousreply 38May 20, 2022 6:52 PM

None I like most of these songs because I'm not old enough to remember when they were played to death (I'm 25).

by Anonymousreply 39May 20, 2022 6:56 PM

R34 I love that song. Its a bop.

by Anonymousreply 40May 20, 2022 6:57 PM

Sweet Home Alabama. Only made worse by that horrific Kid Rock song that sampled it a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 41May 20, 2022 6:59 PM

I love the over the top Trevor Horn production on "Owner of a Lonely Heart." That's one of the first songs I remember hearing where it sounded like you were being assaulted with a blitz of samples.

Horn reached his peak, of course, with Grace Jones' majestic "Slave to the Rhythm."

by Anonymousreply 42May 20, 2022 7:00 PM

As much as I love Elton John I find myself changing the station every time I hear the piano into to 'Tiny Dancer."

by Anonymousreply 43May 20, 2022 7:08 PM

R36 R37 I thought it was Glee, that’s the song they beat to death the first season the show took off.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” too. I don’t know how it took off in recent years but I’m done with it.

by Anonymousreply 44May 20, 2022 7:09 PM

And then a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh wind, r37. The Glee version is the first time I really heard this song.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 45May 20, 2022 7:16 PM

R44 ever since the movie came out Behemian Rhapsody has been played continuously on the radio. The song is depressing as fuck and I always change the station.

by Anonymousreply 46May 20, 2022 7:17 PM

Fuck off OP, you have no taste.

by Anonymousreply 47May 20, 2022 7:17 PM

[quote] They, ahem, "play what we want" as long as it's been extremely researched and vetted. Typical "Jack" station has about 1000 slightly eclectic classic songs in rotation.

This is why I'm so grateful for the emergence of streaming services: I can basically create my own radio station that plays the songs I love, not only those that have been "researched and vetted."

I have a "fun" playlist of upbeat songs going back to the 1950s with over 2,000 songs on it. I can listen to it for days on end with no repeats. Great for work.

by Anonymousreply 48May 20, 2022 7:23 PM

People who say bop need to be sprayed with deodorizer

by Anonymousreply 49May 20, 2022 7:24 PM

R49, Get with the times grandpa or ma.

by Anonymousreply 50May 20, 2022 7:33 PM

While it is insufferably cutesy-pootsy to call a song "a bop," r49, doing so is hardly a deodorizable offense.

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2022 7:38 PM

I hate Queen, Journey, Boston too. It’s just low quality boomer music. Obnoxious, overproduced and tacky. They need to put those ‘hit records’ out of their misery.

by Anonymousreply 52May 20, 2022 7:40 PM

Lots of boomers hated the "one word name" groups, too, r52. I never bought a single record by Queen, Styx, Journey, Boston, Kansas, Genesis, Cream, Abba, Yes, Heart, Rush, Kiss, Aerosmith, Toto, etc.

(I did buy Chicago's first two albums, though. And The Yes Album.)

by Anonymousreply 53May 20, 2022 7:44 PM

Owner of a Lonely Heart is a great song! It was the first song from the new Yes and 90125 is such a fantastic album. “Leave it” is another good tune.

by Anonymousreply 54May 20, 2022 7:46 PM

For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield.

Great song, but it is the go-to song for every lazy-fuck filmmaker who wants a lazy-ass shortcut to evoke the Vietnam War era in their film, mini-series, or TV show.

You overused it, you lazy-ass film fucks.

You ruined it.

I feel such hatred in my heart for you.

Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. It seemed every crappy bar band used to perform this song.

by Anonymousreply 56May 20, 2022 7:48 PM

So many straight fratbros and middle aged straight ladies overplay these songs that they just turn me off by association. I could my life without hearing Journey, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Kiss, Bon Jovi, etc again. I'm from Jersey and classic rock seems worshipped here among white straight people here and lot of the local stations play it. Go into any grocery store and you will hear it all the time.

by Anonymousreply 57May 20, 2022 7:49 PM

Styx Sail Away

The Beatles Got to Get You Into My Life

Hotel California I hated the second I heard it

Afternoon Delight

Anything by Seals & Croft

Redbone Come and Get Your Love

Blondie Call Me

Pearl Jam Jeremy

by Anonymousreply 58May 20, 2022 8:04 PM

There were 2 songs I couldn't deal with anymore, "FREEBIRD" & "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" I heard them too many times by the time I was 21 yrs old (growing up in Philly-East Falls). However, I started listening to Freebird again, I'm back to loving the song. Stairway to Heaven....No, still hate it but LOVE Led Zepplin (esp Black Dog&, when the levee breaks)

by Anonymousreply 59May 20, 2022 8:07 PM

R55, "White Rabbit" is also totally overused in Vietnam-era shows and movies. Also, anything by The Doors

by Anonymousreply 60May 20, 2022 8:10 PM

You gotta add the Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" and Creedence "Run Through the Jungle" to any Vietnam-era playlist. I actually like all those songs but it's pretty annoying that they just started using the same half-dozen tracks over and over as shorthand.

by Anonymousreply 61May 20, 2022 8:15 PM

Chances are good I won’t play anything by Led Zeppelin, the Band, the Doors, Van Morrison, CSNY (or any portions thereof), Steely Dan (except Gaucho), or the Beatles (except Abbey Road) again before I die.

by Anonymousreply 62May 20, 2022 8:18 PM

Billy Idol's White Wedding Light my Fire, Riders of the Storm by the Doors A Day in the Life Anything by Aerosmith Anything by CSN

by Anonymousreply 63May 20, 2022 8:19 PM

Billy Idol's White Wedding

Light my Fire, Riders of the Storm by the Doors

A Day in the Life

Anything by Aerosmith

Anything by CSN

by Anonymousreply 64May 20, 2022 8:20 PM

All of them. I hate classic rock and assume anyone who listens to it is pure TRASH!!

by Anonymousreply 65May 20, 2022 8:22 PM

You shook me all night long

by Anonymousreply 66May 20, 2022 8:24 PM

Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones

by Anonymousreply 67May 20, 2022 8:30 PM

Separate Ways - Journey

by Anonymousreply 68May 20, 2022 8:31 PM

Satisfaction might be considered more of a pop song, so I'll try to give a valid answer now.

Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd --I can't change the channel quickly enough.

by Anonymousreply 69May 20, 2022 8:35 PM

Don’t Stop Believin’ was brought back to us thanks to those jackasses on Glee. All the 10 year olds at the time thought that was a cool song and wore it out quickly. I think Journey was better BEFORE Steve Perry. Guy always sounds like he’s about to pass a kidney stone. I also feel the same way about Genesis and Fleetwood Mac. I liked them better with Peter Gabriel and Peter Green on lead.

by Anonymousreply 70May 20, 2022 8:37 PM

Wonderful Tonight

by Anonymousreply 71May 20, 2022 8:40 PM

I like The Police, but Every Breath You Take is so boring...I have hated it since the 80's

by Anonymousreply 72May 20, 2022 8:42 PM

I'd add the entire album of Pink Floyd's The Wall. When I was in high school a "hip" teacher made us watch the movie and write something about it. It was really difficult to find something constructive to say since I thought the whole thing was about as deep as a puddle.

I eventually realized I quite like the early psychedelic Floyd, but by the time you get to The Wall it's just a giant preachy ego trip for Waters and the reason (or one of them) punk was invented.

by Anonymousreply 73May 20, 2022 8:44 PM

It's funny, for many of the boring songs listed here (and I agree with many of the choices), there's an equal song on the same record or time period by the same artist, that I love.

I also despise Every Breath You Take r72, but never move the dial with King of Pain comes on. Which isn't often anymore, for some reason it gets little airplay now.

Brick in Wall is similarly terrible, but I can't help by really like Run Like Hell.

by Anonymousreply 74May 20, 2022 8:47 PM

The song is great but....it's kind of sad how "Fortunate Son" is now being trotted out as some fun party song for Trump to dance to at rallies. Did anyone pay attention to the lyrics?

by Anonymousreply 75May 20, 2022 8:53 PM

Dream On

American Girl

One Headlight

Don't Stop (Thinkin' About Tomorrow)

by Anonymousreply 76May 20, 2022 8:53 PM

Rolling In Shit

by Anonymousreply 77May 20, 2022 9:59 PM

Abba's "Take a Chance on Me".

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. I know the lyrics were written and spoken by someone who was extremely intoxicated at the moment. Translation: "In the Garden of Eden".

"Just Like Paradise" by David Lee Roth

Does Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" qualify? In a category of its own?

by Anonymousreply 78May 20, 2022 10:24 PM

Is John Mellencamp considered classic rock? If so, his catalogue should burn in a grease fire. Everything sounds the same, he has no range or talent.

by Anonymousreply 79May 20, 2022 11:50 PM

Now that classic rock radio has evolved into the early to mid 90s with a handful of grunge tracks, I despise hearing ANYTHING by Pearl Jam.

Fucking Even Flow, Jeremy, Alive, ALL OF THAT CAN FUCK OFF. How did I EVER like it.

by Anonymousreply 80May 21, 2022 12:22 AM

R79, years ago I used to work at a restaurant where they'd play some 80s station. "Jack and Diane" was always on. I never want to hear that song again

by Anonymousreply 81May 21, 2022 12:32 AM

R54 I thought Owner of a Lonely Heart was a great song the first 10,000 times I heard it. Now I feel it definitely belongs on this list. Maybe I'll change my mind in 10 years if I miraculously don't hear it again.

OP, btw, kudos for a great thread!

by Anonymousreply 82May 21, 2022 12:36 AM

Does any radio station still play Debby Boone's You Light Up My Life? I haven't heard it in decades. Sure, it was overplayed in 1977-78, but it's basically disappeared from the culture.

by Anonymousreply 83May 21, 2022 1:58 AM

R83 Once in a blue moon, I think KEarth101 plays it out here in LA, but thankfully, it's become somewhat obscure.

by Anonymousreply 84May 21, 2022 2:02 AM

"You Light Up My Life" was the precursor to saturation-play megaschlock ballads like "I Will Always Love You" and "My Heart Will Go On," but Debby Boone's career sank like a rock after that one hit, and so did the song. It's like we collectively decided to pretend it and she never happened.

by Anonymousreply 85May 21, 2022 2:02 AM

Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light. Did it really take 86 replies before this crapfest was mentioned? or did I miss an entry?

The second I hear it I want to smash whatever device the excruciating sound is coming from.

by Anonymousreply 86May 21, 2022 2:06 AM

R85 Debby Boone had a second music career in the mid 80s as a popular Contemporary pop Christian artist.

by Anonymousreply 87May 21, 2022 2:08 AM

^ We don't want to hear that shit again, either.

by Anonymousreply 88May 21, 2022 2:11 AM

I think they play way too much Guns N' Roses on my local classic rock station. It's like every other song is a Guns N' Roses song. I'll still listen to November Rain when that comes on though.

by Anonymousreply 89May 21, 2022 2:12 AM

Debby also had a #1 hit on the country chart in 1980. It's also rather awful.

by Anonymousreply 90May 21, 2022 2:13 AM

"Take a look at my girlfriend" or whatever the bloody title of that song is by Supertramp. HATED it the very first time I heard it, and it only compounded. The Logical Song is a very close second. Maybe it's the lead singer's voice I can't stand, but I can't see myself liking any version of either

On the other hand, Bloody Well Right is one of my all time favorite rock songs. I never get tired of hearing it. Sung by one of the other guys in Supertramp.

by Anonymousreply 91May 21, 2022 2:24 AM

Any classic rock song used to sell something in a commercial.

by Anonymousreply 92May 21, 2022 2:24 AM

I heard "Owner of a Lonely Heart" on my car radio and got new appreciation for it. It sounded great in my car. It's not overplayed where I live, so it was refreshing to hear.

by Anonymousreply 93May 21, 2022 2:29 AM

Guns & Roses, Styx, Rush, Genesis, Yes, Eagles, Beatles, The Police, Fleetwood Mac, Heart.

I like Queen but hate Bohemian Rhapsody. Strangely, I tolerate Journey. I don’t think they were very popular on the radio here so I don’t have as visceral a reaction to them as I do to the others.

by Anonymousreply 94May 21, 2022 2:43 AM

Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street. Loved it at one time, not sure I can ever hear it again.

On the other hand, I never get tired of hearing Right Down the Line. It was recently used very effectively in an episode of Euphoria, possibly it's best episode! (fans of Euphoria know exactly which episode I'm talking about).

by Anonymousreply 95May 21, 2022 2:56 AM

How Soon is Now is the only Smiths song I like, but I like it a lot.

by Anonymousreply 96May 21, 2022 2:57 AM

Anything and everything by John Mellencamp.

by Anonymousreply 97May 21, 2022 3:02 AM

^^Jack and Diane being the worst, (and most overplayed). But I always hated John Mellencamp.

by Anonymousreply 98May 21, 2022 3:04 AM

^ "Pink Houses" ranks right up there with "Jack and Diane."

by Anonymousreply 99May 21, 2022 3:18 AM

Living on a Prayer is played to death on classic rock stations. It's just awful.

by Anonymousreply 100May 21, 2022 3:24 AM

Smoke on the Water

by Anonymousreply 101May 21, 2022 3:25 AM

Werewolves of London

by Anonymousreply 102May 21, 2022 3:26 AM

Re "Jack & Diane": "Suckin' on a chili dog" always sounded like an unmentionable sex act. Plus who wants to listen to a pop song telling you the thrill of living is gone after sixteen?

For some reason I love "Pink Houses" though. And "Cherry Bomb," and "Lonely Ol' Night."

by Anonymousreply 103May 21, 2022 3:28 AM

Someone mentioned Rush. Geddy Lee’s voice is terrible. And yes, the lead singer of Supertramp is terrible also.

I guess I’m in the minority regarding Hotel California. I love it, but it must be because it reminds me of my parents.

by Anonymousreply 104May 21, 2022 3:35 AM

Everything by ACDC after Bon Scott died. He sang those songs with humor, loved him.

by Anonymousreply 105May 21, 2022 3:37 AM

Everything I do I do it for you

by Anonymousreply 106May 21, 2022 3:41 AM

I never liked Hotel California. Then, my dislike was seared into me when I worked at a bar that had a jukebox. Hotel California was played multiple times per evening.

Then, the Eagles came out with a live version of Hotel California and, somehow, I started loving the song.

by Anonymousreply 107May 21, 2022 3:45 AM

Op should listen to this version of Hotel California

R108 Improved version of a song I'm also dick to death of hearing, but one listen was enough. Thanks for posting.

by Anonymousreply 112May 21, 2022 4:00 AM

R95 I love Right Down the Line. I originally heard it as a cover and found out it was a song from the 1970’s. It’s been recently discovered by younger streaming audiences because of the Sam Evian cover that pops up on indie radio / shuffle playlists, etc.

But it’s not a song that’s overplayed, I’ve heard it on the radio once and it was like satellite radio in someone’s car.

by Anonymousreply 113May 21, 2022 4:53 AM

So at my job there’s only a radio in the warehouse and retail front and if I’m not in my office at my computer I have to listen to the boom box.

The biggest complaint I have about oldies station is they can literally play anything and they just stick with the same old songs everyday.

You would have though “Beat It” was MJ’s only hit.

by Anonymousreply 114May 21, 2022 4:55 AM

Africa - Toto. I hear it all the damn time.

by Anonymousreply 115May 21, 2022 4:56 AM

"Africa" is like "Don't Stop Believin" in that something happened in the last decade or so that gave it a huge boost. I remember reading that its streaming numbers are huge.

by Anonymousreply 116May 21, 2022 4:59 AM

[quote]I'm also dick to death

I wish I was.

by Anonymousreply 117May 21, 2022 4:59 AM

R116, it might be because Weezer and Weird Al covered it a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 118May 21, 2022 5:02 AM

I also have to add the black equivalent of this thread would be “Candy” by Cameo. That’s like the black “Don’t Stop Believing”, it needs to retire.

by Anonymousreply 119May 21, 2022 5:12 AM

Hey Jude - The Beatles. I can still listen to just about every other Beatles song, but not that one. Not for years. Especially the never-ending last two minutes of "Na-na-na-na...Haaayyy Jude"

by Anonymousreply 120May 21, 2022 5:12 AM

[quote] Everything by Madonna except "Like a Prayer."

What "classic rock song" did Madonna every make? I can't think of one.

by Anonymousreply 121May 21, 2022 5:14 AM

I think some people are confusing classic rock stations with oldies stations, on which Madonna's songs are played.

by Anonymousreply 122May 21, 2022 5:18 AM

Stairway to Heaven

Free Bird

Rhiannon

Jack and Diane

Sweet Home Alabama

Bohemian Rhapsody

Walk This Way

by Anonymousreply 123May 21, 2022 5:21 AM

R123 Did you just have K-Jack on for the last 30 minutes? I think that's their exact playlist.

by Anonymousreply 124May 21, 2022 5:23 AM

Lol, r124- it just needs "American Girl" to be complete.

by Anonymousreply 125May 21, 2022 5:26 AM

Oh!!!! I forgot

Anything by Tom Petty. Is he classic rock? Cause it feels like he fits the bill of safe overplayed 70’s / 80’s rock.

by Anonymousreply 126May 21, 2022 5:27 AM

R125 we posted at the same time! That R123 list instantly made us realize Tom Petty was missing lol!

by Anonymousreply 127May 21, 2022 5:28 AM

Yes, r126, he is definitely a staple of every classic rock station. I love the Heartbreakers, but I have to skip "American Girl" and "Breakdown" now because they were played to death.

by Anonymousreply 128May 21, 2022 5:30 AM

I love “Don’t Come Around Here No More”, I even can still tolerate “American Girl” but I loathe “Refugee”!!!! I hate that song! And the song with Stevie.

by Anonymousreply 129May 21, 2022 5:32 AM

Which one with Stevie? "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", "Insider," or "I Will Run To You"? I'm guessing the first one, correct?

by Anonymousreply 130May 21, 2022 5:42 AM

R130 Yeah Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, it’s such an ugly song

by Anonymousreply 131May 21, 2022 5:44 AM

He gave her that one because he promised her "Insider," then decided that it belonged on his album instead. He had to write her another one to make up for not keeping his promise. I like that song, but it's another overplayed one that I end up turning off.

by Anonymousreply 132May 21, 2022 5:47 AM

Totally agree on just about every Tom Petty song, with one exception: I still love "Won't Back Down".

by Anonymousreply 133May 21, 2022 6:07 AM

Can rock songs that are at least thirty years old be categorized as classic rock? I'm just asking where's the break off point?

If 30+ year old rock songs are classic rock, then-- Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana

If not, I used to love Bohemian Rhapsody, but I can't stand it now. It's played way too often, praised too often, and becoming quite overblown as a "great song." I now hate the Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody. Just being honest.

by Anonymousreply 134May 21, 2022 7:04 AM

Anything by CCR. I'm done.

by Anonymousreply 135May 21, 2022 7:10 AM

Piano Man Mr. Bojangles Hey Jude Yesterday Obla-dee-obla-dah (however it’s spelled A Horse With No Name You’re Having My Baby We’ve Only Just Begun

…and there are more that make me furious they are so horrible. Mawkish shit sets my teeth on age —-it’s beyond me how McCartney considers Yesterday some kind of masterpiece.

by Anonymousreply 136May 21, 2022 7:30 AM

R86 = Go-cart Mozart

by Anonymousreply 137May 21, 2022 12:49 PM

"Your Song" used to be played constantly on oldies radio but I guess people got tired of it because I haven't heard it in years. Thankfully!

by Anonymousreply 138May 21, 2022 12:49 PM

[QUOTE] What "classic rock song" did Madonna every make?

Gambler, of course. It rocked HARD!

by Anonymousreply 139May 21, 2022 3:43 PM

R134, our local oldies station plays anything more than 20 years old, which is why I included "One Headlight" on my list.

by Anonymousreply 140May 21, 2022 3:45 PM

The Eagles should burn in hell for eternity for Hotel California.

by Anonymousreply 141May 21, 2022 4:06 PM

I like some of Queen's songs but I absolutely cannot stand their more anthemic hits like We are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, etc. They have been played to the death.

by Anonymousreply 142May 21, 2022 4:07 PM

In the 90’s and 00’s, no one really cared about Queen. I watched them on Vh1.

I think Gaga’s homage to Freddie Mercury during her craze is what introduced him to the millennial / Gen Z theater geek crowd and then it got bigger.

No one gave a shit about Queen 15 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 143May 21, 2022 5:13 PM

[quote]No one gave a shit about Queen 15 years ago.

I didn't give a shit about Queen 45 years ago. If Glee hadn't happened, I doubt anyone would have heard Bohemian Rhapsody in this century.

I hate ALL of Journey--Don't Stop Believing and When the Lights Go Down in the Citay are especially repugnant. Can't escape Journey in SF.

I, like The Dude, had a really bad night and I HATE the fucking Eagles. Someone I know booked himself on a pub tour in Germany playing cover songs on acoustic guitar and he said people would hold up their lighters when he did Hotel California. Sweet summer sweat, indeed. I heard a good cover of Take It Easy the other day, Eagles songs are much improved without any Eagles singing. As Mojo Nixon so aptly put it, "Don Henley must die, DIE!"

I hate ALL of Billy Joel's catalogue, especially Uptown Girl. I don't think he's classic rock exactly, but definitely a cemented boomer.

I have summer memories of everyone's radio tuned to KMET 94.7 and Baker Street echoing up and down Newport beach. This memory is fused with the scent of SPF free suntan creams and baby oil. I will always love it for that. Good guitar solo too.

I could live forever not hearing Rush "salesmen!", AC/DC,

by Anonymousreply 145May 21, 2022 5:36 PM

It's Wayne's World that popularized Bohemian Rhapsody in America, not Glee

by Anonymousreply 146May 21, 2022 5:55 PM

I hate Bohemian effing Rhapsody.

by Anonymousreply 147May 21, 2022 6:01 PM

Queen may be the one classic rock band from the 60s through the 90s that is actually MORE popular now than they were at the time of their peak. They are one of the 50 most streamed acts on Spotify. I can't think of another band I can say that about.

by Anonymousreply 148May 21, 2022 7:44 PM

Has anyone mentioned “Joker”. I could do without hearing that song forever.

by Anonymousreply 149May 21, 2022 7:46 PM

One Toke Over The Line. The greatest thing that ever happened on The Lawrence Welk Show.

[quote]If Glee hadn't happened, I doubt anyone would have heard Bohemian Rhapsody in this century.

As r146 said, you can blame Wayne's World for this. That song has been on classic rock stations every hour of every day ever since.

by Anonymousreply 151May 21, 2022 11:09 PM

I might be wrong on my timing but I think the game Guitar Hero had a lot to do with "Don't Stop Believing." becoming popular again. I remember seeing a few videos with Middle Schoolers playing along with it.

by Anonymousreply 152May 21, 2022 11:51 PM

Hotel California makes me hate the eagles even though they’re actually a good band

by Anonymousreply 153May 22, 2022 12:34 AM

Beach Boy songs are POP songs, Not classic rock at all.

"You’re Having My Baby" and "We’ve Only Just Begun" are "classic rock" songs? Like hell they are! Neither of them have anything to do with rock music.

by Anonymousreply 154May 22, 2022 12:35 AM

That Lawrence Welk faux pas is truly amazing. At least we can credit the old fart with trying to be topical It was a weird time.

by Anonymousreply 155May 22, 2022 11:45 AM

Smells Like Teen Fucking Spirit. It's the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 90s--except it'still played to death to this day.

by Anonymousreply 156May 22, 2022 5:45 PM

I hate the fucking Eagles

by Anonymousreply 157May 22, 2022 5:51 PM

[quote]Eagles songs are much improved without any Eagles singing. As Mojo Nixon so aptly put it, "Don Henley must die, DIE!"

Eagles = bubblegum. "as interesting as a plastic dry-fuck"

by Anonymousreply 158May 23, 2022 3:32 AM

[quote]Beach Boy songs are POP songs, Not classic rock at all.

Maybe so, but Pet Sounds was the inspiration for many Laurel Canyon bands who are considered classic rock.

by Anonymousreply 159May 23, 2022 3:41 AM

Come now, some of the songs listed are great. But i wholeheartedly agree on Hotel California,Dont stop believing,Sweet home Alabama, etc. I think it has to do with public domain or copyright laws. Theres so much fantastic music out there there has to be some reason they keep playing the same tired shit.

by Anonymousreply 160May 23, 2022 4:03 AM

Anyone here check out the Classic Songs You Never Tire Of thread? (probably all of you). It must have been raided by the under 40 crowd and now all the replies are the songs the rest of us are sick to death of!

I hope Supertramp is rotting in hell!

by Anonymousreply 161May 23, 2022 5:58 AM

I feel like classic rock and songs like “Hotel California” are for people who don’t like music or are indifferent. I have a few friends I can imagine having it on a “house party” playlist they made once on Spotify and have been listening to for years.

Anyone who enjoys music gets easily annoyed by the radio in my opinion because of what we’ve been talking about in this thread. It’s like the music is not made for music lovers, it’s for “normal people” who need background sounds in their lives.

by Anonymousreply 162May 23, 2022 6:32 AM

Lick my snatch or my ass

by Anonymousreply 163May 23, 2022 6:40 AM

Sweet Home Alabama pays tribute to George Wallace....fuck that shit

by Anonymousreply 164May 23, 2022 4:42 PM

It certainly does not r164. Don't care for the song and agree that it's overplayed, but that's not a correct interpretation of the lyrics.

by Anonymousreply 165May 23, 2022 4:54 PM

In Birmingham they love the governor (boo-hoo-hoo)

Now we all did what we could do

Now Watergate does not bother me

Does your conscience bother you?

Tell the truth

Sweet home Alabama (oh, sweet home)

Where the skies are so blue

And the governor's true

Sweet home Alabama (lordy)

Lord I'm comin' home to you, yeah, yeah

Montgomery's got the answer

by Anonymousreply 166May 23, 2022 5:09 PM

R165 = racist apologist.

by Anonymousreply 167May 23, 2022 6:28 PM

I say less Eagles and more Olivia Newton John.

I don't particularly like either one of them. If you do, then that's up to you. But they both have been played to fucking death on classic rock stations.

I love that r174. I used to say it was my theme song because I’m the opposite of bad to the bone. I’m gay and come off to those who know me as Mr Sunday school.

by Anonymousreply 175May 23, 2022 11:20 PM

No, r167, "Sweet Home Alabama" was criticizing the governor. That's what the "boo, boo, boo" lyric is about. The song was adopted by rednecks, but it wasn't racist in intent. There was some advertising campaign, KFC maybe?, using this song. People protested. The band's intent was discussed at length back then. Think of all the people singing "Born in the USA" like an anthem. It's like that.

by Anonymousreply 176May 23, 2022 11:34 PM

Back in black is abhorrent and every fucking action/super hero/bromance crap movie uses it for their trailers!

by Anonymousreply 177May 23, 2022 11:39 PM

R176, no, it was a pro George Wallace song. They backtracked and pretended it wasn't when they got shit for it

by Anonymousreply 178May 23, 2022 11:48 PM

Whenever I hear the intros to Sweet Child Of Mine and Welcome to the Jungle I want to crash my car. Also, hearing "Shot Through the Heart!!'.

by Anonymousreply 179May 23, 2022 11:54 PM

I still like Welcome to the Jungle but I'm definitely sick of Sweet Child o' Mine

by Anonymousreply 180May 24, 2022 12:01 AM

ALL OF BON JOVI'S SONGS

by Anonymousreply 181May 24, 2022 12:22 AM

I dunno, Lynyrd Skynyrd did an anti-gun song in the 70s, which is not typical of the southern rock genre.

R169, I'd like to trade our classic rock playlist for yours. I never get to hear Quiet Riot. Unfortunately, I do hear "Sweet Emotion" way more than any human being should have to.

by Anonymousreply 183May 24, 2022 4:04 AM

[quote]Back in black is abhorrent and every fucking action/super hero/bromance crap movie uses it for their trailers!

If you're talking about Iron Man, the song is "Thunderstruck," not "Back in Black."

by Anonymousreply 184May 24, 2022 4:08 AM

Maggie May

We Built this City

Rock and Roll All Nite

Reelin' in the Years l

Sweet Emotion

The Joker

Piano Man

by Anonymousreply 185May 24, 2022 5:08 AM

Are you stupid, r176? "Sweet Home Alabama" is an answer song to Neil Young's anti-racist "Southern Man." It supports Alabama governor George Wallace in the lyrics.

by Anonymousreply 186May 24, 2022 5:34 AM

Every Breath You Take by The Police and The Boys of Summer by Don Henley.

And they still play them regularly on our classic station. UGH

by Anonymousreply 187May 24, 2022 7:10 AM

R187 Those are more pop than rock.

by Anonymousreply 188May 24, 2022 7:13 AM

Another vote for “American Pie,” a song that allows the DJ to take a restroom break.

I hate the length and the “meaningful” tempo changes. I hate the assholes who pick it as a karaoke song.

Don McLean’s version is bad enough, but then it was part of my community chorus’s program several years ago. This chorus was run as a dictatorship by a former Catholic nun from the Baby Boom era. She never met a folk-mass type of song she didn’t LOVE. She always gave her husband a prominent solo, and he was notorious for never getting the lyrics right or doing them the same incorrect way twice. (A fabulous highlight was when they sang a duet of “All I Ask of You,” and he sang “Let me lead you from your *sanity.*”) Obviously, he was a great candidate to sing an endless song with tons of complex lyrics! It was tedious in the extreme! I measured the length of the concert using American Pies as units.

Although it’s not classic rock, I’ve heard “I Will Survive” enough to last the rest of my life, I immediately change the station the second Gloria starts in.

by Anonymousreply 189May 24, 2022 10:07 AM

R189 Valerie Cherish made me like I will Survive . Whenever it comes on I just think of her version.

by Anonymousreply 192May 24, 2022 9:32 PM

I don't think I've ever heard "American Pie" by Don McLean on any classic rock radio station. On an OLDIES radio station, sure. But that song is not considered "classic rock." It's not a ROCK song!

by Anonymousreply 193May 25, 2022 12:17 AM

[quote]Those are more pop than rock.

R193 and whoever posted this- the distinction is meaningless on many classic rock stations that play these songs.

by Anonymousreply 194May 25, 2022 12:59 AM

American Pie, whether or not a "classic rock song" or an "oldies song" has worn out its welcome. Yeah, I get it, it's about never getting pussy ever again since Buddy Holly was killed in a plane crash. Too bad.

by Anonymousreply 195May 25, 2022 3:22 AM

[quote] the distinction is meaningless on many classic rock stations that play these songs.

I've never heard any classic rock station, anywhere, play "You're Having My Baby" or "Close To You." Never. Oldies stations play that kind of dreck.
