In the gay romantic comedy I'm writing a builder hooks up with a policeman who wrongly arrests him for breaking in to his own house. It's hilarious because they're both so straight acting and masculine neither of them realise the other is gay.

My sense is that it's a deconstruction and then a reconstruction. That's how good Rom-Coms (or at least as good as the genre can get) are done in my opinion. You present a farcical or over the top premise, deconstruct it by leaning on the fourth-wall, and then reconstruct it through the lens of the romantic leads. It also perfectly fits the three act story structure.

In this case, the farcical premise is gay culture, which is in and of itself, amusing.

I think it depends on the marketing, like - after the pandemic - it would be nice to watch a comedy (laugh with or at the characters and the silly stereotypes) with others in a movie theater. It wouldn't work on me, but maybe it works on others?

Billy!? Michael Urie?! Why is poor Luke partnered with men who are his social and physical opposites, who in real life would never be able to land him? I thought Rom Coms were about equally attractive people finding each other? These set up are just so unrealistic? Straight movies have Kate Hudson always falling for Matthew McConnahey, that’s a partnership of equals.

Luke was with TR Knight in real life. Urie might be more flamboyant, but I don't think he'd particularly be a step down.

I could not even imagine a guy like Luke Macfarlane falling for a bitter, loud, shrill, obnoxious attention whore like Billy Eichner IRL. Not to mention Eichner is nowhere near Macfarlane's league physically.

What the trailer doesn't tell you is that it's actually a horror, and Billy's wonky eye is possessed by a witch from the 13th century that is using his podcast to gain converts for her coven that seeks to take over the world. Billy's sudden love interest in the hot beefcake is the witch plotting to use him as a sacrifice to return her to the world of the living.

Is Andy Cohen in this?

No matter how bad BROS is… it will likely be better than the romantic comedy this one is writing and directing for himself… watch him cast Matt Bomer as the plausible love interest.

(I previously mentioned Trick, but since it's about two guys who meet at a club--one of whom is a gogo dancer--who are trying to hook up, some will probably say it's trafficking in typical gay ghetto stereotypes.) I had my first sighting of a Bros trailer in the wild tonight, during SNL. Looks like they remembered to include a few clips indicating that it's a comedy in the one airing on network TV.

Huh? A lot of fantasy wish fulfillment, gay or straight, is based on the average protagonist having the borderline magical power to make someone way out of his or her league to fall in love. Luke's character could keep his slutty lifestyle going for many years and yet, I assume, he gives it up for Billy's character.

Poor Luke. Nobody is throwing roles at him so he takes what is offered. Knowing he will be wasted and not have to do much but be a cheerful hunky mannequin. Jingle all the Way was bad and this looks WORSE.

I wouldn't mind a campy loud comedy including physical comedy about a very gay scene but it has to be FUNNY. A zillion years ago Cage aux Folles was actually funny. The American remake The Birdcage was actually funny with charming performances.

The set up and what I saw of the trailer suggest this movie is worse than the marginal gay Indies about similar milieu. At least with marginal cookie cutter Indies there is the charm of the small production, some laughable flaws, and the novelty of unknown actors.

Luke is gorgeous but possibly TOO pumped up in this movie - he looks like the Hulk.

Eichner is dead behind the eyes, has aged drastically and can't carry off the permanent 5 o'clock shadow look at all. Other than that, it looks dreadfully dated for this century.

What surprises me with Eichner is that he seems so full of rage. I mean, he can let it all out during his performances, but when you see behind the scenes stuff and interviews, there's still a massive load of anger and resentment bubbling under the surface.

I think a lot of gay people still hold a lot of grudges and resentment towards society, and the world in general, for how it treats Gays and those who have dreams (and crushes those dreams and ambitions in the most cruel way). Just look at Ellen DeGeneres, super successful and still mean and bitter about what happened when she came out decades ago.

I don't think I can handle 90 min. of a one-note 'Billy being pissed'. I think he would carp and bray during even the most tender moments.

Comedians are notoriously dark and miserable people - I wouldn’t call Billy a comedian necessarily - but he seems to write comedy and fits that profile. Add in the anger and resentment around being gay - that’s quite a combination for the rage he seems to have.

That being said, I remember some posters awhile back saying they had dealt with him and he was very nice in person - so who knows… maybe it’s an act publicly and privately he’s fine. Hard to know with any of these people.

Didn't Luke go to Juilliard? That doesn't automatically makes someone a great actor, but he's not some Instagram model turned actor.

Luke's turned in good acting work on the various series where he's been a regular, and in his stage work. Those Hallmark movies don't require acting from their male leads, just looking pretty and being a bland fantasy object upon whom all the housefraus can project their broken dreams of romance. I don't blame him for not going above and beyond for those paychecks.

Luke's gorgeous and his improved muscley body is amazing so I am happy with whatever role he ends up in, as long as he's wearing tight shirts and there's some shirtless scenes.

Agreed. I didn't think he was awful in some parts of "American Horror Story", but he was only one actor in a larger cast. The trailer that aired during the Tonys was the one I was thinking of earlier. It showed the scene where Billy and Luke get in a fight at the park, and the guys playing ball or frisbee or whatever run over to break it up only to draw up short when they see the fight has progressed into making out. That actually makes me hopeful for the movie's comedy as a whole.

This definitely looks like it has a point of view, although whether it's "good for the gays" is another matter entirely.

I honestly don't believe every gay film needs to be--I think it's good to get some that mix it up a bit and that can be lowdown or obnoxious. When there have been bigger gay-themed movies in recent years they've either been "tasteful" or about repression (or both, since "Tasteful" in gay films usually means being about repression, e.g "Call Me By Your Name" and "Power of the Dog"), so it may be good to have some films that are neither.

I'll wait for the reviews, though because it does look pretty shouty to me. I find Billy Eichner neither a good actor nor easy on the eyes, though I do not doubt he can get it because he's relatively famous and in good shape.

I didn't know Jim Rash had come out, and I'm glad he has.
