Luke looks good.
Is this a Ryan Murphy production? Is Ben Platt in it? Will it be on Netflix?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 18, 2022 3:27 PM |
Luke looks like he’s channeling DL’s beloved Sam Cushing.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 18, 2022 4:05 PM |

Luke is delicious and all of you will watch it...
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 18, 2022 4:07 PM |
Is Billy's appeal for eldergays with hearing loss?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 18, 2022 4:11 PM |
Really want to see this - I am not a huge fan of Billy but this looks better than the usual gay romcoms of yesteryear - I thought Single All the Way was pretty sweet and charming but I am here for an unapologetic filthy funny flick.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 18, 2022 4:16 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 18, 2022 4:23 PM |
It's funny how the joke seems to be that gays are casually cruel to each other.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 18, 2022 4:31 PM |
A movie that perpetrates all the negative stereotypes about gays.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 18, 2022 5:13 PM |
Unfortunately being cruel to one another is the negative stereotype that continues to regenerate within gay culture, generation after generation.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 18, 2022 5:25 PM |
Looks fun. But Billy Eichner is acting like romantic-comedy-era Jennifer Garner on a cocktail of drugs and espresso.
He was one of the better performers in Friends From College in a straight (heh), non-zany performance so I don’t know what the fuck is going on here.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 18, 2022 5:35 PM |
Just like the FIRE ISLAND trailer, this looks like a case where the lead just needs to step away from gay culture. I don’t understand why gay men in 2022 feel like they have to do the club, bar, gay ghetto, Fire Island/P Town thing in order to be gay. It’s totally fine if you do it because your like it, but it seems like it causes a lot of gay men grief and anxiety.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 18, 2022 5:38 PM |
Billy Eichner is a blight on gay society he's every awful stereotype of a gay man all rolled into one screeching mess.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 18, 2022 5:46 PM |
I can't believe nobody acknowledged Bisexual Awareness Week.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 18, 2022 5:53 PM |
Every cliche in the book. And I didn't realize Eichner could only shout.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 18, 2022 5:55 PM |
It’s interesting how he seems desperate to point out that being gay is nothing like being straight and proceeds to show an orgy, packed clubs with shirtless guys dancing, looking for sex online, intense bitchiness and catty comments, etc.
These are already common stereotypes that straight people associate with gay men.
That being said, I laughed outloud at the trailer and Luke is beautiful and I will absolutely see it.

In the gay romantic comedy I'm writing a builder hooks up with a policeman who wrongly arrests him for breaking in to his own house. It's hilarious because they're both so straight acting and masculine neither of them realise the other is gay.
There won't be any sassy queeny sidekicks either. Just two butch masculine men.
It's hilarious,
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 18, 2022 6:04 PM |
It shouldn't be a surprise since Eichner is said to be a massive asshole in real life anyway.

Bowen Yang must be in big demand since his stint started on SNL.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 18, 2022 6:33 PM |
Billy is fine is small doses but he can get unbearable. Would've been better if they left him as just the writer and cast another out gay actor in the lead.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 18, 2022 6:42 PM |
I may go see it but mostly just to look at Luke.

I was in a boardroom meeting for a "Gay& Lesbian start-up" just like that scene in the movie, and it dissolved into chaos. One MAJOR client wanted me to sit in on their board meeting, to give my opinion& advice. Let's say, I read them the riot act. The baby gay tried to verbally attack me...how cute!!
The kissing scene, with that song playing, melted the icicles in my heart. R26 is correct.

Lordy, that Miss Bowen turds up a second punch bowl in as many months.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 18, 2022 8:15 PM |
Why did they have to spoil "Somebody to Love" for us, using it in this trailer ?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 18, 2022 8:17 PM |
The thing about Billy and Bowen both is that, when you hear interviews with them, they're not funny.
It leads me to believe that they're sour bitches and their sole saving grace as people is that they're self-aware enough to parlay their stone-bitch souls into a salable persona.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 18, 2022 8:19 PM |
This looks horrendous. It's going to set back gay rights for decades. There's not a single laugh in the trailer, just loud talking.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 18, 2022 8:46 PM |
Bowen whines a lot on his podcast about being single. He says it's impossible to get a boyfriend as an Asian because gay men are racist, he makes up a lot of excuses. I'm assuming the real reason is his busy schedule with SNL or potentially just his personality.
Remember how he hooked up with Dan Levy when he hosted SNL?
Is Billy still single?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 18, 2022 9:07 PM |
Why does everyone in this movie speak so loudly? I had to lower the volume on my laptop to watch it.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 18, 2022 9:24 PM |
Kudos to Luke for going there with the two guys sucking his cock.
Billy just screams but I guess that's a contract to the more laidback Luke.
I'll watch this if it winds up on a streaming service I already pay for.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 18, 2022 9:30 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 18, 2022 10:19 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 18, 2022 10:22 PM |
Word is Billy is a grade-A douchebag R38, he's the mean gay, not the clever kind of mean, just mean.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 18, 2022 10:37 PM |
Billy can't act, so there's that. He's either shouting or has a sour look on his face. Also he's 43 and looks it, seems a little old for this type of role.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 18, 2022 11:13 PM |
He's only 43?!

Dl fave Roxane "Roxy" Gay has just posted an instastory claiming that although she did not get the part, she auditioned for a role in BROS. Dying to know what version of the script had Roxane yelling at Billy Eichner about how exhausted she is by his schtick until he snaps and points out that she is the size of a Sprinter van. Now THAT I would watch.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 19, 2022 1:04 AM |
To R37, the song works in the trailer. It's a Killer
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 19, 2022 1:07 AM |
R57 So even the Asians don’t want to have sex with each other?

Just like the trannies, R62
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 19, 2022 1:21 AM |
I think this will be a groundbreaking film that will launch Billy Eichner to be the star that he has destined to be. Not just a star, but A-LIST. Also the sex symbol that he should be. He is so handsome and sexy. He and Luke will smolder the screen. Hopefully there will be some racy love scenes to show off Billy's hot body. Hopefully some nice Billy butt shots.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 19, 2022 1:26 AM |
r40, wait--Bowen Yang and Dan Levy hooked up? Is this common knowledge? I...honestly can't imagine the two of them together. And not just because I would assume they're both bottoms. The two of them...just don't make any sense together.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 19, 2022 1:26 AM |
They are both bottoms, but i'm sure their idea of sex was standing in front of a full length dressing room mirror after rehearsal and masturbating while looking at themselves and possibly each other every now and then
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 19, 2022 1:34 AM |
Can’t they just promote the movie without Billy’s real self narration? They must be desperate to promote it as a comedy and not a gay movie: the kiss of box office death.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 19, 2022 1:37 AM |
R40 “Remember how he hooked up with Dan Levy when he hosted SNL?”
I need to upchuck now.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 19, 2022 1:39 AM |
R66 that seems eerily accurate.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 19, 2022 1:40 AM |
So this film partly answers a question that has never been clear: Jim Rash is gay.
Also, it’s great to see Amanda Bearse acting again.
I saw Luke Macfarlane in a DC production of The Normal Heart several Jesse ago. As hot as he was then, he looks even better now.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 19, 2022 1:49 AM |
I forget that on DL the world is divided into strict tops and strict bottoms. Versatile men do not exist.

They do, but those two nelly bottoms are STRICT.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 19, 2022 2:03 AM |
I have no idea who this Luke Macfarlane person is, DL is the only place I've ever heard of him

R73 Were you not around for The Sally Field programme?
by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 19, 2022 2:10 AM |
Expected very little, but was charmed by the trailer and find Billy sexy in an offbeat way.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 19, 2022 2:16 AM |
R65 Apparently that's why it didn't work or so says the blind item.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 19, 2022 2:17 AM |
r70...I would assume he is bisexual actually if he is playing bi. And he gives off that neurotic queeny bi guy vibe that is quite common.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 19, 2022 2:44 AM |
I think it looks funny and don't understand the comments criticizing the "gays are mean to each other" stereotype when that's exactly what is going on here. I only saw Billy Eichner in Parks and Recreation and thought he was kind of one note there, but he looks great here and is genuinely funny. And Luke M. is fucking hot!
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 19, 2022 2:45 AM |
R71 fair enough but who would be the vers top in the pairing of Bowen and Dan?
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 19, 2022 3:05 AM |
Which streaming platform is it on?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | May 19, 2022 3:35 AM |
Jim Rash is gay. When I lived in WeHo he was on the hookup apps.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 19, 2022 3:40 AM |
Is it streaming somewhere for free because I'm not paying to watch it?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 19, 2022 3:40 AM |
Is it wrong that I don't want this movie to exist? I feel it reinforces every imaginable stereotype about gay men and like others have pointed out, it seems so loud.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 19, 2022 3:59 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 84 | May 19, 2022 4:05 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 85 | May 19, 2022 4:26 AM |
I think this looks hilarious. Dot Marie-Jones is killing me in this trailer. I can't believe we have to wait until the 30th of September.
It's funny too that all the people complaining on this thread aren't self-aware enough to see their pov reflected in Eichner's character. He probably just copied the dialogue from DL.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 19, 2022 8:00 AM |
R82, No, it's being given a theatrical release. They've been promoting it as the first gay romcom being released by a major studio. Dumping it on a streamer would defeat the purpose. (It's a Universal film, so most likely will end up on Peacock eventually.)
by Anonymous | reply 87 | May 19, 2022 8:05 AM |
r81 .....because bisexual men dont hook up with men?

by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 19, 2022 8:42 AM |
I agree there's a lack of self-awareness to some of the criticisms here, especially on a board for gay bitchery where so many embody exactly what's being depicted. At the same time there's something uncomfortable about things we know and talk about being commodified and sold (and presented for mockery?) to a wider, outside audience. Like...is that a good thing?
But then I'm also one of those who are bored with inauthentic gay stories written by women. I don't know. Maybe someday there will be something between the two extremes.

by Anonymous | reply 96 | May 19, 2022 9:40 AM |
Fair enough, R92. But it looks like it skewers straight people as much as gay people - and is genuinely funny with it. The “bottom dancing” scene looks hilarious and ending the trailer with “straight people - they had a good run” suggests that gay people are the bosses here. It looks funny, very self-aware in a “we laugh at ourselves first” way and, dare I say, seems post-modern right down to the Eichner character saying he could never write that screenplay just prior to the card crediting him with…writing the screenplay. It at least looks like it will be better than Trainwreck.
Plus, it’s a rom-com. People here seem to be forgetting that the whole arc of a rom-com is to start with the most unlikeliest of scenarios/couplings and bring them together by film’s end.
And for posters hand-wringing about stereotypes…really? This is sort of like saying every time Sandra Bullock trips over something in Miss Congeniality it’s bad for women. Relax already. People loved The Birdcage. Visibility is good.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | May 19, 2022 9:47 AM |

The trailer for the first season of Ryan O'Connell's Netflix series Special ended with essentially the same line in it. "Straight white men are cancelled."

r70, Jim Rash came out publicly in 2018, and he's been fairly open about it on social media since then.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | May 19, 2022 11:04 AM |
R99, I don’t think that’s the same thing at all. Eichner’s line is more related to cultural fashion and subtly hints that their dominance is over. Not cancellation.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | May 19, 2022 11:29 AM |

When Dot Marie Jones and Jim Rash walk away with the trailer after appearing for ten seconds, your movie is in big trouble. Billy Eichner is fine, in very small doses. Does anyone want to follow two grizzled fifty year olds still searching for… whatever at a club? Gurl, bye.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | May 19, 2022 1:25 PM |
I'll watch Luke MacFarlane searching for whatever wherever. Billy should have cast someone else in the lead - didn't have to be a Matt Bomer, just someone we actually want to see fucking or even speaking for that matter.

I'd prefer not to spend money to sit through a 90 minute movie of Billy's yelly schtick. He's more appropriate in small, supporting roles like in Parks & Rec. Maybe once it airs for free somewhere I'll watch and mute it so I don't have to listen to Billy's screaming (and so I can see the dreamy Luke McFarlane get blown by 2 guys).
by Anonymous | reply 120 | May 19, 2022 7:47 PM |

[quote] This is definitely made for gay men who live in gay neighborhoods, who volunteer at gay organizations, who work at gay jobs, whose friends are all gay and who only go to gay parties at gay hotspots.
There are a few gay people who don't live in gayborhoods, or even gay friendly towns, who like to fantasize about the life they could live somewhere else. That's what escapist entertainment is about, it's about forgetting your own sad and lonely life for a little while. Gay themed movies like this one are for them.

It looks terrible, but good on Universal for giving this a theatrical release. Universal will also be releasing M. Night Shyamalan’s next film, which is a horror movie with a gay married couple as the two leads, played by two gay actors, Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge. So good on that studio.

Like r141, I would like to see a romance between two men where them being gay isn't the primary focus: they're neither fully invested in the whole clubs and Fire Island and political activism "lifestyle" but neither are they oppressed or shamed. Basically, your run of the mill romance - a Roman Holiday or a Doctor Zhivago or a Love Story - but with two men.

by Anonymous | reply 181 | May 20, 2022 7:32 AM |
I thought the trailer was pretty funny. Some people here are either overly sensitive or genre-blind.
My sense is that it's a deconstruction and then a reconstruction. That's how good Rom-Coms (or at least as good as the genre can get) are done in my opinion. You present a farcical or over the top premise, deconstruct it by leaning on the fourth-wall, and then reconstruct it through the lens of the romantic leads. It also perfectly fits the three act story structure.
In this case, the farcical premise is gay culture, which is in and of itself, amusing.

Of course, in real life if someone said that anyone with any self-respect would ghost that person immediately. However, only a very specific type of humor is based in verisimilitude where the humor reflects the sentiment "ah, that's what life is really like."

The entire third act of the movie is dedicated to the wonky eye. What the trailer doesn't tell you is that it's actually a horror, and Billy's wonky eye is possessed by a witch from the 13th century that is using his podcast to gain converts for her coven that seeks to take over the world. Billy's sudden love interest in the hot beefcake is the witch plotting to use him as a sacrifice to return her to the world of the living.

Just curious: the examples given so far of non-stereotypical characters and stories not focused on being gay seem to all be dramas, not comedies (or romantic dramas, not romcoms)--My Beautiful Launderette, God's Own Country.... Are there examples of good comedies about gay characters that aren't stereotypical? (I previously mentioned Trick, but since it's about two guys who meet at a club--one of whom is a gogo dancer--who are trying to hook up, some will probably say it's trafficking in typical gay ghetto stereotypes.) Maybe The Broken Hearts Club? (I suspect some will say that has stereotypes too.) Or do comedies by nature call for broader and less realistic depictions?

Billy Eichner is a loud, obnoxious, shrill and thoroughly annoying person. If he were straight we would dislike him too, it has nothing to do with his sexuality.

Luke seems to be better at being pretty, than real acting.

[quote] Luke McFarlane is supposed to the the "Prince Charming" of this movie. I don't like seeing him get sucked off by two other guys while Billy is trying to kiss him. Prince Charming isn't supposed to be a slut.
Huh? A lot of fantasy wish fulfillment, gay or straight, is based on the average protagonist having the borderline magical power to make someone way out of his or her league to fall in love. Luke's character could keep his slutty lifestyle going for many years and yet, I assume, he gives it up for Billy's character.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | May 23, 2022 6:45 AM |
Poor Luke. Nobody is throwing roles at him so he takes what is offered. Knowing he will be wasted and not have to do much but be a cheerful hunky mannequin. Jingle all the Way was bad and this looks WORSE.
I wouldn't mind a campy loud comedy including physical comedy about a very gay scene but it has to be FUNNY. A zillion years ago Cage aux Folles was actually funny. The American remake The Birdcage was actually funny with charming performances.
The set up and what I saw of the trailer suggest this movie is worse than the marginal gay Indies about similar milieu. At least with marginal cookie cutter Indies there is the charm of the small production, some laughable flaws, and the novelty of unknown actors.
Luke is gorgeous but possibly TOO pumped up in this movie - he looks like the Hulk.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | May 23, 2022 7:36 AM |
Eichner is dead behind the eyes, has aged drastically and can't carry off the permanent 5 o'clock shadow look at all. Other than that, it looks dreadfully dated for this century.
by Anonymous | reply 259 | May 23, 2022 7:58 AM |
What surprises me with Eichner is that he seems so full of rage. I mean, he can let it all out during his performances, but when you see behind the scenes stuff and interviews, there's still a massive load of anger and resentment bubbling under the surface.
I think a lot of gay people still hold a lot of grudges and resentment towards society, and the world in general, for how it treats Gays and those who have dreams (and crushes those dreams and ambitions in the most cruel way). Just look at Ellen DeGeneres, super successful and still mean and bitter about what happened when she came out decades ago.

I don't think I can handle 90 min. of a one-note 'Billy being pissed'. I think he would carp and bray during even the most tender moments.

by Anonymous | reply 263 | May 23, 2022 9:14 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 264 | May 23, 2022 11:24 AM |
Comedians are notoriously dark and miserable people - I wouldn’t call Billy a comedian necessarily - but he seems to write comedy and fits that profile. Add in the anger and resentment around being gay - that’s quite a combination for the rage he seems to have.
That being said, I remember some posters awhile back saying they had dealt with him and he was very nice in person - so who knows… maybe it’s an act publicly and privately he’s fine. Hard to know with any of these people.

He was actually pretty good in Killjoys and decent in the medical procedural Night Shift.
Granted, he's not Olivier, but you don't need that for the majority of roles. I mean, look at Ellen Pompeo. She earns $550K per episode for Greys Anatomy, plus syndication and royalties. She ain't no Meryl Streep or G.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | May 23, 2022 5:36 PM |

No it’s not. We’ve seen the trailer. Billy Eichner had all the range of a Jon Stewart reaction gif.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | May 23, 2022 5:45 PM |
Didn't Luke go to Juilliard? That doesn't automatically makes someone a great actor, but he's not some Instagram model turned actor.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | May 23, 2022 5:48 PM |
Luke's turned in good acting work on the various series where he's been a regular, and in his stage work. Those Hallmark movies don't require acting from their male leads, just looking pretty and being a bland fantasy object upon whom all the housefraus can project their broken dreams of romance. I don't blame him for not going above and beyond for those paychecks.
by Anonymous | reply 274 | May 23, 2022 6:15 PM |
Luke's gorgeous and his improved muscley body is amazing so I am happy with whatever role he ends up in, as long as he's wearing tight shirts and there's some shirtless scenes.

The one good thing they did was actually avoid "bury your gays" and give all the gay/lesbian characters who were regulars happy endings.

Agreed. I didn't think he was awful in some parts of "American Horror Story", but he was only one actor in a larger cast. It's a shame they didn't find someone else to play the Eichner role (even if he DID write it, and was probably contractually cast in the part). My feelings are mixed on the trailer. I'd love to be positively surprised by it, but I won"t hold my breath.
That being said, if it releases in theaters (and I havem't heard anything to the contrary), I'll see it with a particular straight friend of mine. If I have to suffer, so does he. But if it turns out to be a positive experience, it will be one we share. Time will tell.

The trailer that aired during the Tonys was the one I was thinking of earlier. It showed the scene where Billy and Luke get in a fight at the park, and the guys playing ball or frisbee or whatever run over to break it up only to draw up short when they see the fight has progressed into making out. That actually makes me hopeful for the movie's comedy as a whole.

by Anonymous | reply 316 | June 14, 2022 4:30 PM |
This definitely looks like it has a point of view, although whether it's "good for the gays" is another matter entirely.
I honestly don't believe every gay film needs to be--I think it's good to get some that mix it up a bit and that can be lowdown or obnoxious. When there have been bigger gay-themed movies in recent years they've either been "tasteful" or about repression (or both, since "Tasteful" in gay films usually means being about repression, e.g "Call Me By Your Name" and "Power of the Dog"), so it may be good to have some films that are neither.
I'll wait for the reviews, though because it does look pretty shouty to me. I find Billy Eichner neither a good actor nor easy on the eyes, though I do not doubt he can get it because he's relatively famous and in good shape.
I didn't know Jim Rash had come out, and I'm glad he has.
