BROS TRAILER IS HERE

Luke looks good.

by Anonymousreply 335November 29, 2022 1:41 AM

Is this a Ryan Murphy production? Is Ben Platt in it? Will it be on Netflix?

by Anonymousreply 1May 18, 2022 3:27 PM

Luke looks like he’s channeling DL’s beloved Sam Cushing.

by Anonymousreply 2May 18, 2022 3:28 PM

quit trying to make Billy a thing

by Anonymousreply 3May 18, 2022 3:32 PM

Flop!!!

by Anonymousreply 4May 18, 2022 3:40 PM

He's annoying but Luke is hot and it actually looks funny.

by Anonymousreply 5May 18, 2022 3:41 PM

what will Hallmark say about Luke doing this?

by Anonymousreply 6May 18, 2022 3:49 PM

Looks funny.

by Anonymousreply 7May 18, 2022 3:54 PM

I'm immune to the charms of naked men, but this looks funny and his rebuttal to "love is love" was much appreciated.

by Anonymousreply 8May 18, 2022 4:01 PM

Wow, two and a half minutes of shouty non-funny.

by Anonymousreply 9May 18, 2022 4:05 PM

Well, Billy has ruined his chance of ever working with LMM.

by Anonymousreply 10May 18, 2022 4:05 PM

Luke is delicious and all of you will watch it...

by Anonymousreply 11May 18, 2022 4:07 PM

Is Billy's appeal for eldergays with hearing loss?

by Anonymousreply 12May 18, 2022 4:11 PM

Really want to see this - I am not a huge fan of Billy but this looks better than the usual gay romcoms of yesteryear - I thought Single All the Way was pretty sweet and charming but I am here for an unapologetic filthy funny flick.

by Anonymousreply 13May 18, 2022 4:16 PM

Yeah, this might be not bad. Luke's body looks spectacular.

by Anonymousreply 14May 18, 2022 4:23 PM

It's funny how the joke seems to be that gays are casually cruel to each other.

by Anonymousreply 15May 18, 2022 4:31 PM

A movie that perpetrates all the negative stereotypes about gays.

by Anonymousreply 16May 18, 2022 5:13 PM

Unfortunately being cruel to one another is the negative stereotype that continues to regenerate within gay culture, generation after generation.

by Anonymousreply 17May 18, 2022 5:25 PM

Looks fun. But Billy Eichner is acting like romantic-comedy-era Jennifer Garner on a cocktail of drugs and espresso.

He was one of the better performers in Friends From College in a straight (heh), non-zany performance so I don’t know what the fuck is going on here.

by Anonymousreply 18May 18, 2022 5:35 PM

Just like the FIRE ISLAND trailer, this looks like a case where the lead just needs to step away from gay culture. I don’t understand why gay men in 2022 feel like they have to do the club, bar, gay ghetto, Fire Island/P Town thing in order to be gay. It’s totally fine if you do it because your like it, but it seems like it causes a lot of gay men grief and anxiety.

by Anonymousreply 19May 18, 2022 5:38 PM

Billy Eichner is a blight on gay society he's every awful stereotype of a gay man all rolled into one screeching mess.

by Anonymousreply 20May 18, 2022 5:46 PM

I can't believe nobody acknowledged Bisexual Awareness Week.

by Anonymousreply 21May 18, 2022 5:53 PM

Every cliche in the book. And I didn't realize Eichner could only shout.

by Anonymousreply 22May 18, 2022 5:55 PM

It’s interesting how he seems desperate to point out that being gay is nothing like being straight and proceeds to show an orgy, packed clubs with shirtless guys dancing, looking for sex online, intense bitchiness and catty comments, etc.

These are already common stereotypes that straight people associate with gay men.

That being said, I laughed outloud at the trailer and Luke is beautiful and I will absolutely see it.

by Anonymousreply 23May 18, 2022 6:03 PM

In the gay romantic comedy I'm writing a builder hooks up with a policeman who wrongly arrests him for breaking in to his own house. It's hilarious because they're both so straight acting and masculine neither of them realise the other is gay.

There won't be any sassy queeny sidekicks either. Just two butch masculine men.

It's hilarious,

by Anonymousreply 24May 18, 2022 6:04 PM

It shouldn't be a surprise since Eichner is said to be a massive asshole in real life anyway.

by Anonymousreply 25May 18, 2022 6:15 PM

this looks hilarious. The kissing scene with a twist ended me.

by Anonymousreply 26May 18, 2022 6:21 PM

Bowen Yang must be in big demand since his stint started on SNL.

by Anonymousreply 27May 18, 2022 6:25 PM

I didn't even smile. It all sounds boilerplate pablum.

by Anonymousreply 28May 18, 2022 6:27 PM

Looks great, can’t wait.

by Anonymousreply 29May 18, 2022 6:32 PM

It's made by Billy (literal screaming queen) Eichner so it's gonna suck, and not, in the so bad, it's good way.

by Anonymousreply 30May 18, 2022 6:33 PM

Billy is fine is small doses but he can get unbearable. Would've been better if they left him as just the writer and cast another out gay actor in the lead.

by Anonymousreply 31May 18, 2022 6:42 PM

I may go see it but mostly just to look at Luke.

by Anonymousreply 32May 18, 2022 7:23 PM

If ever there was a movie to stream for FREE and put on TV as background while folding laundry then filing my calluses, then checking my email.

by Anonymousreply 33May 18, 2022 7:30 PM

I was in a boardroom meeting for a "Gay& Lesbian start-up" just like that scene in the movie, and it dissolved into chaos. One MAJOR client wanted me to sit in on their board meeting, to give my opinion& advice. Let's say, I read them the riot act. The baby gay tried to verbally attack me...how cute!!

The kissing scene, with that song playing, melted the icicles in my heart. R26 is correct.

by Anonymousreply 34May 18, 2022 8:09 PM
Billy is fine is small doses but he can get unbearable.

Welcome to the DL, Retta!

by Anonymousreply 35May 18, 2022 8:12 PM

Lordy, that Miss Bowen turds up a second punch bowl in as many months.

by Anonymousreply 36May 18, 2022 8:15 PM

Why did they have to spoil "Somebody to Love" for us, using it in this trailer ?

by Anonymousreply 37May 18, 2022 8:17 PM

The thing about Billy and Bowen both is that, when you hear interviews with them, they're not funny.

It leads me to believe that they're sour bitches and their sole saving grace as people is that they're self-aware enough to parlay their stone-bitch souls into a salable persona.

by Anonymousreply 38May 18, 2022 8:19 PM

This looks horrendous. It's going to set back gay rights for decades. There's not a single laugh in the trailer, just loud talking.

by Anonymousreply 39May 18, 2022 8:46 PM

Bowen whines a lot on his podcast about being single. He says it's impossible to get a boyfriend as an Asian because gay men are racist, he makes up a lot of excuses. I'm assuming the real reason is his busy schedule with SNL or potentially just his personality.

Remember how he hooked up with Dan Levy when he hosted SNL?

Is Billy still single?

by Anonymousreply 40May 18, 2022 9:07 PM

Why does everyone in this movie speak so loudly? I had to lower the volume on my laptop to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 41May 18, 2022 9:24 PM

Kudos to Luke for going there with the two guys sucking his cock.

Billy just screams but I guess that's a contract to the more laidback Luke.

I'll watch this if it winds up on a streaming service I already pay for.

by Anonymousreply 42May 18, 2022 9:30 PM

I mean he is spot on for showing a whining (and queeny, always queeny) bisexual complaining about not getting validation from gays.

by Anonymousreply 43May 18, 2022 9:38 PM

R43 = Billy Eichler's publicist

by Anonymousreply 44May 18, 2022 9:39 PM

Christ, this makes me long for the subtle nuances of Mark Sam Rosenthal's West 40s.

by Anonymousreply 45May 18, 2022 9:43 PM

Billy owes me a new keyboard for a combination coffee noser/spit take! The trailer is hilarious!

by Anonymousreply 46May 18, 2022 10:10 PM

R46=Billy Eichner

You took the words right out of mouth, R3.

by Anonymousreply 47May 18, 2022 10:18 PM

*Eichler

(What's the difference?)

by Anonymousreply 48May 18, 2022 10:19 PM

If Eichner really thinks this trailer is some major FU to DeSantis, he needs a serious reality check.

by Anonymousreply 49May 18, 2022 10:22 PM

Word is Billy is a grade-A douchebag R38, he's the mean gay, not the clever kind of mean, just mean.

by Anonymousreply 50May 18, 2022 10:37 PM

Billy can't act, so there's that. He's either shouting or has a sour look on his face. Also he's 43 and looks it, seems a little old for this type of role.

by Anonymousreply 51May 18, 2022 11:13 PM

He's only 43?!

by Anonymousreply 52May 18, 2022 11:15 PM

A little Billy goes a LONG way.

by Anonymousreply 53May 18, 2022 11:17 PM

If Billy is claiming 43, he's lying. Add at least 5 years onto that.

by Anonymousreply 54May 19, 2022 12:01 AM

Nobody wants to fuck Bowen Yang because he's Asian, it's because he's fat and hideous.

by Anonymousreply 55May 19, 2022 12:04 AM

And a huge fembot sissy.

by Anonymousreply 56May 19, 2022 12:06 AM

I know several gay Asian guys who are slim and good looking and they get plenty of white dick.

by Anonymousreply 57May 19, 2022 12:10 AM

Joel Kim Booster is beautiful and gets dick. Being asian is not the issue.

by Anonymousreply 58May 19, 2022 12:18 AM

Well they got the podcast/radio career right for the film, he truly has the face for it.

by Anonymousreply 59May 19, 2022 12:56 AM

Dl fave Roxane "Roxy" Gay has just posted an instastory claiming that although she did not get the part, she auditioned for a role in BROS. Dying to know what version of the script had Roxane yelling at Billy Eichner about how exhausted she is by his schtick until he snaps and points out that she is the size of a Sprinter van. Now THAT I would watch.

by Anonymousreply 60May 19, 2022 1:04 AM

To R37, the song works in the trailer. It's a Killer

by Anonymousreply 61May 19, 2022 1:07 AM

R57 So even the Asians don’t want to have sex with each other?

by Anonymousreply 62May 19, 2022 1:20 AM

Just like the trannies, R62

by Anonymousreply 63May 19, 2022 1:21 AM

I think this will be a groundbreaking film that will launch Billy Eichner to be the star that he has destined to be. Not just a star, but A-LIST. Also the sex symbol that he should be. He is so handsome and sexy. He and Luke will smolder the screen. Hopefully there will be some racy love scenes to show off Billy's hot body. Hopefully some nice Billy butt shots.

by Anonymousreply 64May 19, 2022 1:26 AM

r40, wait--Bowen Yang and Dan Levy hooked up? Is this common knowledge? I...honestly can't imagine the two of them together. And not just because I would assume they're both bottoms. The two of them...just don't make any sense together.

by Anonymousreply 65May 19, 2022 1:26 AM

They are both bottoms, but i'm sure their idea of sex was standing in front of a full length dressing room mirror after rehearsal and masturbating while looking at themselves and possibly each other every now and then

by Anonymousreply 66May 19, 2022 1:34 AM

Can’t they just promote the movie without Billy’s real self narration? They must be desperate to promote it as a comedy and not a gay movie: the kiss of box office death.

by Anonymousreply 67May 19, 2022 1:37 AM

R40 “Remember how he hooked up with Dan Levy when he hosted SNL?”

I need to upchuck now.

by Anonymousreply 68May 19, 2022 1:39 AM

R66 that seems eerily accurate.

by Anonymousreply 69May 19, 2022 1:40 AM

So this film partly answers a question that has never been clear: Jim Rash is gay.

Also, it’s great to see Amanda Bearse acting again.

I saw Luke Macfarlane in a DC production of The Normal Heart several Jesse ago. As hot as he was then, he looks even better now.

by Anonymousreply 70May 19, 2022 1:49 AM

I forget that on DL the world is divided into strict tops and strict bottoms. Versatile men do not exist.

by Anonymousreply 71May 19, 2022 2:02 AM

They do, but those two nelly bottoms are STRICT.

by Anonymousreply 72May 19, 2022 2:03 AM

I have no idea who this Luke Macfarlane person is, DL is the only place I've ever heard of him

by Anonymousreply 73May 19, 2022 2:03 AM

R73 Were you not around for The Sally Field programme?

by Anonymousreply 74May 19, 2022 2:10 AM

Expected very little, but was charmed by the trailer and find Billy sexy in an offbeat way.

by Anonymousreply 75May 19, 2022 2:16 AM

R65 Apparently that's why it didn't work or so says the blind item.

by Anonymousreply 76May 19, 2022 2:17 AM

r70...I would assume he is bisexual actually if he is playing bi. And he gives off that neurotic queeny bi guy vibe that is quite common.

by Anonymousreply 77May 19, 2022 2:44 AM

I think it looks funny and don't understand the comments criticizing the "gays are mean to each other" stereotype when that's exactly what is going on here. I only saw Billy Eichner in Parks and Recreation and thought he was kind of one note there, but he looks great here and is genuinely funny. And Luke M. is fucking hot!

by Anonymousreply 78May 19, 2022 2:45 AM

R71 fair enough but who would be the vers top in the pairing of Bowen and Dan?

by Anonymousreply 79May 19, 2022 3:05 AM

Which streaming platform is it on?

by Anonymousreply 80May 19, 2022 3:35 AM

Jim Rash is gay. When I lived in WeHo he was on the hookup apps.

by Anonymousreply 81May 19, 2022 3:40 AM

Is it streaming somewhere for free because I'm not paying to watch it?

by Anonymousreply 82May 19, 2022 3:40 AM

Is it wrong that I don't want this movie to exist? I feel it reinforces every imaginable stereotype about gay men and like others have pointed out, it seems so loud.

by Anonymousreply 83May 19, 2022 3:59 AM

It looks dated, like something from the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 84May 19, 2022 4:05 AM

It is not wrong at all R83

by Anonymousreply 85May 19, 2022 4:26 AM

I think this looks hilarious. Dot Marie-Jones is killing me in this trailer. I can't believe we have to wait until the 30th of September.

It's funny too that all the people complaining on this thread aren't self-aware enough to see their pov reflected in Eichner's character. He probably just copied the dialogue from DL.

by Anonymousreply 86May 19, 2022 8:00 AM

R82, No, it's being given a theatrical release. They've been promoting it as the first gay romcom being released by a major studio. Dumping it on a streamer would defeat the purpose. (It's a Universal film, so most likely will end up on Peacock eventually.)

by Anonymousreply 87May 19, 2022 8:05 AM

r81 .....because bisexual men dont hook up with men?

by Anonymousreply 88May 19, 2022 8:09 AM

We'll all be dead from Monkey Pox by the time this is released. The straights won't go for it.

by Anonymousreply 89May 19, 2022 8:19 AM

Couldn't even make it through the trailer Awful!

by Anonymousreply 90May 19, 2022 8:27 AM

Will the show be as chaste as The Heartstoppers?

by Anonymousreply 91May 19, 2022 8:42 AM

I agree there's a lack of self-awareness to some of the criticisms here, especially on a board for gay bitchery where so many embody exactly what's being depicted. At the same time there's something uncomfortable about things we know and talk about being commodified and sold (and presented for mockery?) to a wider, outside audience. Like...is that a good thing?

But then I'm also one of those who are bored with inauthentic gay stories written by women. I don't know. Maybe someday there will be something between the two extremes.

by Anonymousreply 92May 19, 2022 8:55 AM

R84 you mean the 80s!

by Anonymousreply 93May 19, 2022 8:59 AM

R12 Everyone in the film shouts. Are all the characters hard of hearing?

by Anonymousreply 94May 19, 2022 9:04 AM
I also think it's dumb and unoriginal to name your kids after celebrities (Knox)

by Anonymousreply 95May 19, 2022 9:31 AM

I’d like to just watch Luke get a blowjob from those two guys for the duration of the movie. Is that an option?

by Anonymousreply 96May 19, 2022 9:40 AM

Fair enough, R92. But it looks like it skewers straight people as much as gay people - and is genuinely funny with it. The “bottom dancing” scene looks hilarious and ending the trailer with “straight people - they had a good run” suggests that gay people are the bosses here. It looks funny, very self-aware in a “we laugh at ourselves first” way and, dare I say, seems post-modern right down to the Eichner character saying he could never write that screenplay just prior to the card crediting him with…writing the screenplay. It at least looks like it will be better than Trainwreck.

Plus, it’s a rom-com. People here seem to be forgetting that the whole arc of a rom-com is to start with the most unlikeliest of scenarios/couplings and bring them together by film’s end.

And for posters hand-wringing about stereotypes…really? This is sort of like saying every time Sandra Bullock trips over something in Miss Congeniality it’s bad for women. Relax already. People loved The Birdcage. Visibility is good.

by Anonymousreply 97May 19, 2022 9:47 AM

"People loved The Birdcage."

Not all people.

by Anonymousreply 98May 19, 2022 10:23 AM
straight people - they had a good run

The trailer for the first season of Ryan O'Connell's Netflix series Special ended with essentially the same line in it. "Straight white men are cancelled."

by Anonymousreply 99May 19, 2022 10:40 AM

r70, Jim Rash came out publicly in 2018, and he's been fairly open about it on social media since then.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 100May 19, 2022 11:04 AM

R99, I don’t think that’s the same thing at all. Eichner’s line is more related to cultural fashion and subtly hints that their dominance is over. Not cancellation.

by Anonymousreply 101May 19, 2022 11:29 AM

If a group is cancelled, they're still dominant?

by Anonymousreply 102May 19, 2022 11:34 AM

Can we get sign language interpreters for in the theaters, many of us are bound to be deaf by the end with all that shouting?

by Anonymousreply 103May 19, 2022 1:06 PM

When Dot Marie Jones and Jim Rash walk away with the trailer after appearing for ten seconds, your movie is in big trouble. Billy Eichner is fine, in very small doses. Does anyone want to follow two grizzled fifty year olds still searching for… whatever at a club? Gurl, bye.

by Anonymousreply 104May 19, 2022 1:25 PM

I'll watch Luke MacFarlane searching for whatever wherever. Billy should have cast someone else in the lead - didn't have to be a Matt Bomer, just someone we actually want to see fucking or even speaking for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 105May 19, 2022 1:26 PM

LOL at everyone shocked that a meeskite Jewish comedian made a movie where he ends up with a much hotter shaygitz

What will they think of next?

by Anonymousreply 106May 19, 2022 1:54 PM

R106 is right. I guess we are making strides. How many straight movies are there with some ugly male lead and some beautiful woman he ends up with?

Progress.

by Anonymousreply 107May 19, 2022 2:00 PM
I guess we are making strides.

Okay, but be sure to see the movie this year. Next year it will be illegal.

by Anonymousreply 108May 19, 2022 2:14 PM

Too bad they've got Luke all shaved and douched and pouffed.

by Anonymousreply 109May 19, 2022 2:31 PM

Now I love me some Adam Sandler level broad obvious comedy, which this gay movie seems to resemble. But that trailer is not funny.

by Anonymousreply 110May 19, 2022 2:44 PM

I agree that there is something pathetic about the characters and plotting.

by Anonymousreply 111May 19, 2022 2:45 PM
When Dot Marie Jones and Jim Rash walk away with the trailer after appearing for ten seconds,

Who and who?

by Anonymousreply 112May 19, 2022 2:52 PM

No one has addressed who would be the vers bottom in the Yang/Levy SNL hookup. Just saying.

by Anonymousreply 113May 19, 2022 3:10 PM
Will the show be as chaste as The Heartstoppers?

It is? Pity.

by Anonymousreply 114May 19, 2022 3:17 PM

Once upon a time, people knew how to laugh with each other. But now everything is considered mean, offensive and so not funny. Not by actual people, but social media trolls.

by Anonymousreply 115May 19, 2022 3:20 PM

And this is why we won't have any more gay themed movies for another 20 years. All these people saying they'll only see it if it's free. No wonder we only get shitty Marvel and DC movies in theaters these days. No one goes and supports anything else.

by Anonymousreply 116May 19, 2022 5:54 PM

I'd never go for a Billy type but I find him sexy. I bet he throws a mean fuck.

by Anonymousreply 117May 19, 2022 6:04 PM

No one wants to pay for this because it looks like a POS, not because it's not a super hero movie. Why should we support garbage, merely because it's gay? Should black people support Madea movies because they're black characters?

by Anonymousreply 118May 19, 2022 7:43 PM

Lighten up. Whats wrong with Medea or this film? It's just comedy, get a life.

by Anonymousreply 119May 19, 2022 7:44 PM

I'd prefer not to spend money to sit through a 90 minute movie of Billy's yelly schtick. He's more appropriate in small, supporting roles like in Parks & Rec. Maybe once it airs for free somewhere I'll watch and mute it so I don't have to listen to Billy's screaming (and so I can see the dreamy Luke McFarlane get blown by 2 guys).

by Anonymousreply 120May 19, 2022 7:47 PM

Shouldn't we wait for the reviews?

This is a big move on the part of Universal, don't you think they'd work on making sure that the product is as good as possible since so many eyeballs will be on this?

by Anonymousreply 121May 19, 2022 8:06 PM

This looks less crass than Fire Island. I'll support both, but can't see myself in either.

by Anonymousreply 122May 19, 2022 8:27 PM

it looks completely amateurish

by Anonymousreply 123May 19, 2022 8:32 PM

This is definitely made for gay men who live in gay neighborhoods, who volunteer at gay organizations, who work at gay jobs, whose friends are all gay and who only go to gay parties at gay hotspots.

by Anonymousreply 124May 19, 2022 8:36 PM

billy insisted this movie only cast non-straight actors. the first ever for a major studio picture. not one gay has congratulated him for actually doing something. he also was extremely active in trying to get Democrats elected, while you bitches bashed people through you keyboards.

by Anonymousreply 125May 19, 2022 8:41 PM

I've seen people on other platforms celebrating that--on Twitter and Instagram at least. Naturally I also saw one bitchy queen on Twitter responding that it's not good enough because the co-writer/director is straight, which was my cue to log off Twitter for the day.

by Anonymousreply 126May 19, 2022 8:50 PM

Why is everyone in the trailer yelling?

by Anonymousreply 127May 19, 2022 8:51 PM

Everyone after watching this movie.

That's great. Just hope the movie is good.

by Anonymousreply 129May 19, 2022 8:58 PM

I'll celebrate when a movie casts gay actors in roles that DON'T require them to be walking stereotypes.

by Anonymousreply 130May 19, 2022 9:01 PM

As noted, all the straight characters are played by non-straight actors (like Guillermo Diaz as the straight father in the trailer) so many are likely playing non-stereotypes. I'm sure you'll get right on that celebrating, right, r130?

by Anonymousreply 131May 19, 2022 9:06 PM
This is definitely made for gay men who live in gay neighborhoods, who volunteer at gay organizations, who work at gay jobs, whose friends are all gay and who only go to gay parties at gay hotspots.

There are a few gay people who don't live in gayborhoods, or even gay friendly towns, who like to fantasize about the life they could live somewhere else. That's what escapist entertainment is about, it's about forgetting your own sad and lonely life for a little while. Gay themed movies like this one are for them.

by Anonymousreply 134May 19, 2022 10:04 PM

It looks terrible, but good on Universal for giving this a theatrical release. Universal will also be releasing M. Night Shyamalan’s next film, which is a horror movie with a gay married couple as the two leads, played by two gay actors, Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge. So good on that studio.

by Anonymousreply 135May 19, 2022 10:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 136May 19, 2022 10:08 PM

Don't drag Madea into this. Madea movies are politically incorrect and often hilarious. And I like the amateur hour tone to them. The franchise is a hit and pulled in gross of a couple hundred million.

by Anonymousreply 137May 19, 2022 10:12 PM

Just goes to show you can't please everyone.

Seriously, what's everyone's idea of a perfect movie with a gay leads? No clubs? No sex? No hookup apps? But also, we can't have them be too domesticated, suburban, or sexless. What's the perfect in between?

by Anonymousreply 138May 19, 2022 10:41 PM

r138, Fraus loved Call Me By Your Name. And then there's God's Own Country.

However, they didn't have the "from Gays for Gays" stamp of approval.

The last thing that was fairly popular was the British TV show It's A Sin about the early days of the AIDS crisis in the UK.

by Anonymousreply 139May 19, 2022 10:45 PM

I’m sure straight people don’t LOVE every movie made about them.

by Anonymousreply 140May 19, 2022 10:47 PM

I like this movie, but I can answer you 138. Just a movie with an interesting plot where being gay is not the main plot. My friends and I have healthy sex lives and we never been to a gay club, or a bath house. Most of us live ordinary lives. I do use apps, mostly tinder, bicupid, jackd.

Blech. It looks dreadful. I couldn't even make it through the trailer.

by Anonymousreply 149May 19, 2022 11:15 PM

R148, they probably consider gay men kissing to be explicit...

by Anonymousreply 150May 19, 2022 11:15 PM

r150 beat me to it. We're living in a "Don't Say Gay" world. You know the kiss alone qualified it as explicit. (In another tweet they call it "Probably the most degenerate trailer we've seen so far.")

by Anonymousreply 151May 19, 2022 11:17 PM

Yes I think conservatives are HORRIFIED by gay men kissing. Which makes me actually like that Billy has the scene of the 2 guys sucking Luke's dick while he's sitting next to him naked.

by Anonymousreply 152May 19, 2022 11:21 PM

I'll pass on this, but the horror film by M. Night Shyamalan sounds interesting.

This movie look like nothing more than a shitty vehicle designed to showcase Eichner's dubious mainstream appeal, and looks like the gay version of that execrable Amy Schumer vehicle TRAINWRECK. The hardest of hard fucking passes.

And Bowen Yang is a pudgy, unfunny queen. Purses fall out of her mouth anytime this bitch speaks. You'd have to have the hardest bout of yellow fever to want to fuck her.
Seriously, what's everyone's idea of a perfect movie with a gay leads?

Like r141, I would like to see a romance between two men where them being gay isn't the primary focus: they're neither fully invested in the whole clubs and Fire Island and political activism "lifestyle" but neither are they oppressed or shamed. Basically, your run of the mill romance - a Roman Holiday or a Doctor Zhivago or a Love Story - but with two men.

by Anonymousreply 160May 20, 2022 1:44 AM

That would be nice r160. Most gay men are not part of the party scene that you always see in gay-themed material. It's also kind of dated. Are there even big clubs anymore in NYC?

by Anonymousreply 170May 20, 2022 3:34 AM

R170 I have a very hard time identifying with even a single moment from the trailer. But particularly the "too old for the pool" joke. In my life if I had a friend who told me that they would no longer be my friend. I wouldn't talk to them again. Maybe there's just a level of meanness that some gay guys accept from others but I would have no part of it.

by Anonymousreply 171May 20, 2022 3:58 AM

R171, I've been to a ton of gay pool parties, but I don't live in NYC or LA, so I guess it's different there, but here there were always young guys, middle-age guys, and old guys. And fat guys, dad-bod guys, and fit guys, and skinny guys. And nobody made a big deal out of any of it.

by Anonymousreply 180May 20, 2022 6:34 AM

Of all the Gay men of Hollywood, who’s idea was it to build a Rom Com around Billy? It just doesn’t even make the slightest sense at all?

by Anonymousreply 181May 20, 2022 7:32 AM

I thought the trailer was pretty funny. Some people here are either overly sensitive or genre-blind.

My sense is that it's a deconstruction and then a reconstruction. That's how good Rom-Coms (or at least as good as the genre can get) are done in my opinion. You present a farcical or over the top premise, deconstruct it by leaning on the fourth-wall, and then reconstruct it through the lens of the romantic leads. It also perfectly fits the three act story structure.

In this case, the farcical premise is gay culture, which is in and of itself, amusing.

by Anonymousreply 182May 20, 2022 8:38 AM

I love that Datalounge, and social media in general, is so predictable. No matter what, there'll always be haters who are more than happy to shit on anything. Too woke vs. this doesn't represent me at all! When it comes to gay themed entertainment, it's one or the other these days.

Gay romcoms are nothing new (I'm old enough to remember seeing "Trick" in the theaters in...'98?); the distinction in this case is it's the first one to be produced and released by a major studio, and receive a wide release. Of course, in real life if someone said that anyone with any self-respect would ghost that person immediately. However, only a very specific type of humor is based in verisimilitude where the humor reflects the sentiment "ah, that's what life is really like."

I love Luke Macfarlane and Dot Marie Jones, so I’m stuck seeing this no matter how much Billy screams. TBetter not forget my earplugs when I go to the theater.

From the trailer I get the impression Billy’s character has a love/hate thing going on with Luke’s because the latter is more attractive and he REALLY resents that fact. Who says Art doesn’t reflect real life?
Bowen whines a lot on his podcast about being single. He says it’s impossible to get a boyfriend as an Asian because gay men are racist, he makes up a lot of excuses.

What’s his excuse for not being able to get an Asian boyfriend? Presumably any failures there can’t be blamed on racism...
I swear Luke already did the big Gay breakthrough Rom Com back in December, it had a holidays theme, I remember Christmas trees?

It also had Luke being enthusiastic about dating Michael Urie while the latter would rather talk about how great his allegedly platonic roommate was instead of returning the interest. Godzilla movies have required less suspension of disbelief from me.

by Anonymousreply 211May 21, 2022 12:13 AM

Billy!? Michael Urie?! Why is poor Luke partnered with men who are his social and physical opposites, who in real life would never be able to land him? I thought Rom Coms were about equally attractive people finding each other? These set up are just so unrealistic? Straight movies have Kate Hudson always falling for Matthew McConnahey, that’s a partnership of equals.

by Anonymousreply 216May 21, 2022 12:26 AM

Luke was with TR Knight in real life. Urie might be more flamboyant, but I don't think he'd particularly be a step down.

by Anonymousreply 217May 21, 2022 12:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 221May 21, 2022 12:51 AM

His shouting is his trademark from his Billy on the Streets' days (and he did it on Parks and Recreation). Without it, people would talk more about his wonky eye creeping them out and that sort of bulldog shaped face.

by Anonymousreply 222May 21, 2022 12:52 AM

The entire third act of the movie is dedicated to the wonky eye. What the trailer doesn't tell you is that it's actually a horror, and Billy's wonky eye is possessed by a witch from the 13th century that is using his podcast to gain converts for her coven that seeks to take over the world. Billy's sudden love interest in the hot beefcake is the witch plotting to use him as a sacrifice to return her to the world of the living.

It's just endless complaining sometimes. Gay stories are either too gay or not gay enough, perpetuate stereotypes or don't acknowledge realities, too angsty or too saccharine, the list goes on.

Real Goldilocks syndrome here.

by Anonymousreply 233May 21, 2022 5:54 AM

Just curious: the examples given so far of non-stereotypical characters and stories not focused on being gay seem to all be dramas, not comedies (or romantic dramas, not romcoms)--My Beautiful Launderette, God's Own Country.... Are there examples of good comedies about gay characters that aren't stereotypical? (I previously mentioned Trick, but since it's about two guys who meet at a club--one of whom is a gogo dancer--who are trying to hook up, some will probably say it's trafficking in typical gay ghetto stereotypes.) Maybe The Broken Hearts Club? (I suspect some will say that has stereotypes too.) Or do comedies by nature call for broader and less realistic depictions?

I had my first sighting of a Bros trailer in the wild tonight, during SNL. Looks like they remembered to include a few clips indicating that it's a comedy in the one airing on network TV.

by Anonymousreply 255May 22, 2022 5:36 AM

Luke seems to be better at being pretty, than real acting.

by Anonymousreply 256May 23, 2022 6:06 AM
Luke McFarlane is supposed to the the "Prince Charming" of this movie. I don't like seeing him get sucked off by two other guys while Billy is trying to kiss him. Prince Charming isn't supposed to be a slut.

Huh? A lot of fantasy wish fulfillment, gay or straight, is based on the average protagonist having the borderline magical power to make someone way out of his or her league to fall in love. Luke's character could keep his slutty lifestyle going for many years and yet, I assume, he gives it up for Billy's character.

by Anonymousreply 257May 23, 2022 6:45 AM

Poor Luke. Nobody is throwing roles at him so he takes what is offered. Knowing he will be wasted and not have to do much but be a cheerful hunky mannequin. Jingle all the Way was bad and this looks WORSE.

I wouldn't mind a campy loud comedy including physical comedy about a very gay scene but it has to be FUNNY. A zillion years ago Cage aux Folles was actually funny. The American remake The Birdcage was actually funny with charming performances.

The set up and what I saw of the trailer suggest this movie is worse than the marginal gay Indies about similar milieu. At least with marginal cookie cutter Indies there is the charm of the small production, some laughable flaws, and the novelty of unknown actors.

Luke is gorgeous but possibly TOO pumped up in this movie - he looks like the Hulk.

by Anonymousreply 258May 23, 2022 7:36 AM

Eichner is dead behind the eyes, has aged drastically and can't carry off the permanent 5 o'clock shadow look at all. Other than that, it looks dreadfully dated for this century.

by Anonymousreply 259May 23, 2022 7:58 AM

What surprises me with Eichner is that he seems so full of rage. I mean, he can let it all out during his performances, but when you see behind the scenes stuff and interviews, there's still a massive load of anger and resentment bubbling under the surface.

I think a lot of gay people still hold a lot of grudges and resentment towards society, and the world in general, for how it treats Gays and those who have dreams (and crushes those dreams and ambitions in the most cruel way). Just look at Ellen DeGeneres, super successful and still mean and bitter about what happened when she came out decades ago.

by Anonymousreply 260May 23, 2022 8:36 AM

I don't think I can handle 90 min. of a one-note 'Billy being pissed'. I think he would carp and bray during even the most tender moments.

by Anonymousreply 261May 23, 2022 8:44 AM

I mean, obviously R260.

That's why DL exists and is so full of pointless bitchery. The cruelty of the world towards gays is not news to anyone here.

by Anonymousreply 262May 23, 2022 8:55 AM

r262, very true. Sadly.

by Anonymousreply 263May 23, 2022 9:14 AM

R257 i doubt he gives it up. the point of the movie is how different that subset of gay men are from straight people. the point is that he will continue to be a slut after they get together

by Anonymousreply 264May 23, 2022 11:24 AM

Comedians are notoriously dark and miserable people - I wouldn’t call Billy a comedian necessarily - but he seems to write comedy and fits that profile. Add in the anger and resentment around being gay - that’s quite a combination for the rage he seems to have.

That being said, I remember some posters awhile back saying they had dealt with him and he was very nice in person - so who knows… maybe it’s an act publicly and privately he’s fine. Hard to know with any of these people.

by Anonymousreply 265May 23, 2022 11:49 AM
Luke seems to be better at being pretty, than real acting.

Luke Macfarlane is John Gielgud compared to Billy Eichner.

by Anonymousreply 266May 23, 2022 1:15 PM

But what accomplishment is barely being a better actor than Billy Eichner?

by Anonymousreply 267May 23, 2022 4:08 PM

Eh? No one said it’s an accomplishment. Just that’s he’s a better actor.

by Anonymousreply 268May 23, 2022 4:40 PM

That's also debatable, he's pretty and can say a line while making faces but that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 269May 23, 2022 4:42 PM

Meh. Know your lines and hit your marks, preferably shirtless or, better, nude. That's all I ask of hunky actors.

by Anonymousreply 270May 23, 2022 4:46 PM
Poor Luke. Nobody is throwing roles at him so he takes what is offered. Knowing he will be wasted and not have to do much but be a cheerful hunky mannequin. Jingle all the Way was bad and this looks WORSE.

He was actually pretty good in Killjoys and decent in the medical procedural Night Shift.

Granted, he's not Olivier, but you don't need that for the majority of roles. I mean, look at Ellen Pompeo. She earns $550K per episode for Greys Anatomy, plus syndication and royalties. She ain't no Meryl Streep or G.

by Anonymousreply 271May 23, 2022 5:36 PM
That's also debatable

No it’s not. We’ve seen the trailer. Billy Eichner had all the range of a Jon Stewart reaction gif.

by Anonymousreply 272May 23, 2022 5:45 PM

Didn't Luke go to Juilliard? That doesn't automatically makes someone a great actor, but he's not some Instagram model turned actor.

by Anonymousreply 273May 23, 2022 5:48 PM

Luke's turned in good acting work on the various series where he's been a regular, and in his stage work. Those Hallmark movies don't require acting from their male leads, just looking pretty and being a bland fantasy object upon whom all the housefraus can project their broken dreams of romance. I don't blame him for not going above and beyond for those paychecks.

by Anonymousreply 274May 23, 2022 6:15 PM

Luke's gorgeous and his improved muscley body is amazing so I am happy with whatever role he ends up in, as long as he's wearing tight shirts and there's some shirtless scenes.

by Anonymousreply 275May 24, 2022 3:05 AM

Luke is pretty...

by Anonymousreply 276May 24, 2022 5:31 AM

Meanwhile....

by Anonymousreply 280May 24, 2022 3:13 PM

Although it does kinda make me want to watch Killjoys.

by Anonymousreply 281May 24, 2022 3:14 PM

Are all those Killjoy characters gay? Is that the gimmick?

by Anonymousreply 282May 24, 2022 8:19 PM
Are all those Killjoy characters gay? Is that the gimmick?

Everyone on the show was gay, lesbian or bi EXCEPT the two men.

The one good thing they did was actually avoid "bury your gays" and give all the gay/lesbian characters who were regulars happy endings.

by Anonymousreply 283May 28, 2022 3:12 AM

Did this open this weekend, is it part of the big summer kick off?

by Anonymousreply 284May 28, 2022 3:13 AM

R284 Not out till September

by Anonymousreply 285May 28, 2022 5:48 AM

Why do long?

by Anonymousreply 286May 28, 2022 6:22 AM

Billy eichner Is cute with his lazy eye.

by Anonymousreply 287May 28, 2022 9:22 AM

R287 he's part of a cabal of lazy-eyed power players that meet in secret and require all new members to have a lazy eye, either natural or self-created. Andy Cohen is their leader. Soon they will be more powerful than the velvet Mafia!

by Anonymousreply 288May 28, 2022 3:42 PM

I wouldn't take Dot Marie Jones and Jim Rash stealing the trailer as a sure sign of a bomb, they've certainly proved themselves capable of pulling focus in popular comedies.

I'll just be happy if this turns out to be like a studio version of [italic]Eating Out: All You Can Eat[/italic] with supporting cast who can act and better production values.

by Anonymousreply 289May 29, 2022 9:59 PM

Eating Out has dick in it. Will this?

by Anonymousreply 290May 30, 2022 4:34 AM

Good interview with Joel Kim Booster and Billy Eichner on their respective films. They both come across well, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 294June 3, 2022 3:30 AM

by Anonymousreply 295June 3, 2022 3:33 AM

Bowen Yang isn't in any of the pictures, so what are you on about, r293 and r295? You really can't tell Asians apart, even when the man's name is specifically used in the post and caption?

by Anonymousreply 296June 3, 2022 3:36 AM

Sorry, I meant Booster but Bowen is the star of the movie.

by Anonymousreply 297June 3, 2022 3:43 AM

No, he’s not.

by Anonymousreply 298June 3, 2022 3:55 AM
Which film will make more money?

Is Fire Island even being released in theaters? I thought it was just on Hulu.

by Anonymousreply 299June 3, 2022 3:55 AM

How do you judge the success then? Which movie will more people see?

by Anonymousreply 300June 3, 2022 3:57 AM

r299, true.

by Anonymousreply 301June 3, 2022 3:57 AM
"Billy is fine is small doses but he can get unbearable."

Agreed. I didn't think he was awful in some parts of "American Horror Story", but he was only one actor in a larger cast. It's a shame they didn't find someone else to play the Eichner role (even if he DID write it, and was probably contractually cast in the part). My feelings are mixed on the trailer. I'd love to be positively surprised by it, but I won"t hold my breath.

That being said, if it releases in theaters (and I havem't heard anything to the contrary), I'll see it with a particular straight friend of mine. If I have to suffer, so does he. But if it turns out to be a positive experience, it will be one we share. Time will tell.

by Anonymousreply 302June 3, 2022 4:10 AM

The reality is that I'll end up watching this at some point, just to watch Luke. He rarely plays the cad or himbo, so it would be fun to watch...for free when it comes to one of the streaming platforms.

by Anonymousreply 303June 3, 2022 12:46 PM

Every negative gay stereotype in one movie is bad enough but in two.

by Anonymousreply 304June 3, 2022 2:37 PM

R296 I thought r293 was being funny and making a not-so-subtle "Asian people all look alike" joke so I just leaned into it.

But, your reaction is funny too! 😅

by Anonymousreply 305June 5, 2022 3:48 PM

r305, I was actually hoping that was the case! It's so hard to tell around here sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 306June 5, 2022 4:19 PM

Fire Island was very good. I don’t think Bros could beat it.

by Anonymousreply 307June 6, 2022 12:28 AM

Luke Macfarlane being attracted to that fat homely sissy Bowen Yang was totally unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 308June 6, 2022 12:33 AM

So, is Luke still a slut at the end of the movie?

by Anonymousreply 309June 6, 2022 6:07 PM

The movie's not even out.*

by Anonymousreply 310June 6, 2022 7:32 PM

Predictions then.

by Anonymousreply 311June 6, 2022 7:35 PM

The trailer that aired during the Tonys was the one I was thinking of earlier. It showed the scene where Billy and Luke get in a fight at the park, and the guys playing ball or frisbee or whatever run over to break it up only to draw up short when they see the fight has progressed into making out. That actually makes me hopeful for the movie's comedy as a whole.

by Anonymousreply 312June 14, 2022 4:01 PM

Is this better than the other gay romantic comedy, Fire Island?
Good Lord, everyone in that clip was exceedingly fey. The room was filled with purses by the end of it.

You mean, as opposed to real friend groups of gay men in gaybourhoods, where there's always multiple straight-acting gays?

You don;t get out much, do you?

by Anonymousreply 314June 14, 2022 4:26 PM

R314 what are you ranting about? I was referring to the "Killjoys" clip, which last I checked isn't about "real friend groups of gay men in gaybourhoods".

by Anonymousreply 315June 14, 2022 4:28 PM

Are there brojobs in this film?

by Anonymousreply 316June 14, 2022 4:30 PM

This definitely looks like it has a point of view, although whether it's "good for the gays" is another matter entirely.

I honestly don't believe every gay film needs to be--I think it's good to get some that mix it up a bit and that can be lowdown or obnoxious. When there have been bigger gay-themed movies in recent years they've either been "tasteful" or about repression (or both, since "Tasteful" in gay films usually means being about repression, e.g "Call Me By Your Name" and "Power of the Dog"), so it may be good to have some films that are neither.

I'll wait for the reviews, though because it does look pretty shouty to me. I find Billy Eichner neither a good actor nor easy on the eyes, though I do not doubt he can get it because he's relatively famous and in good shape.

I didn't know Jim Rash had come out, and I'm glad he has.

by Anonymousreply 317June 14, 2022 4:38 PM

R317 the plot twist is that at the end everyone except Billy suddenly becomes trans, so this is no longer a gay film, it's about a straight couple and their heterosexual marriage.
