I don’t believe it.
Does the fat girl really get gorgeous Colin Bridgerton in the books?

I thought I read the she got thin in the book.

[quote]I thought I read the she got thin in the book.
A quick search reveals she does, R1.
[quote]There’s also the question of how the show will handle Penelope’s “transformation,” which is referenced quite a bit on the page. Book 4 makes sure readers know Penelope — who was described as “round” and “plump” in earlier books — has lost weight by the time Colin finally starts paying attention to her. I’m cautiously optimistic the series will nix this character detail altogether. While Portia Featherington did make references to Penelope's weight in Season 1, she didn’t specifically use her size as a reason to repeatedly dismiss her youngest daughter, especially not in Season 2.
[...]
[quote]Finally, there’s a bit of a question mark around Penelope’s age, since Romancing Mister Bridgerton takes place more than a decade after Daphne met the duke. On screen, Pen is still a teenager. Unless the show has a major surprise time jump (which some fans think it might), Pen will be making some big life decisions without that extra decade of life experience to help shape her. On the other hand, allowing Penelope to fall in love at 18 might be a lot nicer than having everyone refer to her as a spinster when she’s 28, as they do in the book.

Can they CGI Nicola Coughlan's head onto a thin person's body? Like Death Becomes Her?

If she does have to lose weight for the role, she's not exactly Chrissy Metz at the moment.

I think she looks pretty when not shrouded in one of those hideous, lemon-yellow dresses.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 17, 2022 7:19 PM |
Agreed, she is really pretty. Unlike many of her fellow countryfolk, she's aging really well too - I was shocked to learn she was 35 fucking years old! Yes, the extra padding probably helps a little, but there's not enough to explain why she genuinely looks 15.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 17, 2022 7:21 PM |
HOLY FUCK THAT BITCH IS 35?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 17, 2022 7:22 PM |
No wonder they are doing her season next, if they wait too long she’ll be 40.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 17, 2022 7:26 PM |
This is a fairly unretouched very recent closeup photo of her. This bitch does not have one line on her entire fucking face! And she's IRISH -all those hos age like milk! She must have been wearing industrial strength sunscreen since she was a toddler. If it's Botox, it's very good work.

As discussed in the other thread about her, ALL OF HER ROLES TO DATE HAVE BEEN PLAYING TEENAGERS.
She's a teenager in Derry Girls, in Bridgerton, and was a teenager on the stage in the trans drama and when she was one of the schoolgirls in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie.
Considering she's getting invited to the Met Gala and to present awards at BAFTA she doesn't have much other work offers coming in.

Of course she's getting work as a teenager - she looks like one. She'll be 40 and still playing co-eds.

I thought back in that time....plump girls were considered the most attractive

He comes across as gay in the show. He only ever had sexual chemistry with his ex's husband.

No offense to fatties, but it’s ridiculous to pretend that a grotesque pig like that is “pretty”. I guess to a farmer a sow might be considered good looking, but to normal human beings, she’s revolting. Colin would only be “attracted” to her if she had a huge dowry. This is really pushing the envelope of the fantasy aspect of this series.

It’s only because you are so gorgeous r14 you can get away with that.

After almost a decade as Mrs. Whistledown, Pen had roughly 9000 pounds hidden away. She uses some of the money to fund her mother, gives away some, and the remainder is her wedding portion.
However, as the third son, Colin has relatively little money of his own. Her money apparently represents a big part of what they use to live. Benedict has even less apparently because he marries someone with no money. The youngest brother is forced to become a "gentleman farmer" which is one notch above sharecropper.
I question whether Colin could actually have done much better since he had a good family (and was a sibling to a duchess and viscount), but had little else to recommend his.

If she's considered fat now, in Regency England, she would have been in circus sideshows.

r16, ok that makes sense for Colin to use Pen to get her money. He could then get a mistress for love and sex. I hope the show doesn’t do anything disgusting like act like that there was any romantic feelings by Colin towards her. He already indicated in season two that the notion was nonsensical.

Word on the street is they're skipping over Benedict's season for S3 in part because the showrunners are trying to figure out how to deal with Benedict's gay/bi-coding on the show which isn't in the books at all. Apparently they have a deal with the author to not change the romances or the happily ever afters. He ends up with a woman in the books, as they all do. Julia Quinn is a straight woman, so there are no main gay/bi characters in the books.

[quote][R16], ok that makes sense for Colin to use Pen to get her money.
According to what I've seen, in the books, she doesn't reveal she's Lady Whistledown or has money until after they either engaged or married. The reveal doesn't actually happen until that book, unlike the tv show, no on knows who LW is until then.
As with each of the books which riffs on a famous romance (The Viscount Who Loved Me is a riff The Taming of the Shrew), Benedict's story, An Offer from a Gentleman, is a riff on Cinderella. He meets his love interest at the Bridgerton family annual masquerade ball. She's the daughter of an Earl, but has a wicked stepmother and stepsisters. They meet when she sneaks into the ball in disguise, then hilarity ensues as he tries to find her again.
You'd have to change a LOT if they're going to make him a 'mo.

I could actually see that being a really cute m/m story, especially if he's poor. They've made many significant changes to the books already.

Tangential point: Jonathan Bailey needs to stop clubbing. He’s gorgeous but looks a solid 45 instead of 33.

That’s the lesbian from Derry Girls.

It's insane to me that a current cultural message is that women can be as fat as they want to be and be considered beautiful, but that they get as their reward chisel-jawed men who are pure muscle and have 3% bodyfat.

She looks young because she’s a fat hog. Adele got a million fillers and Botox and plastic surgery after she lost 80 pounds. She will have to do the same.
