An interesting observation about they/them pronouns on a college campus

We’ve all read the endless articles about college students’ obsession with pronouns and gender identity, and how college campuses are cesspools full of “theys” with purple hair.

I am just finishing up the MBA program and graduating next week. During my time in grad school I have spent an extensive amount of time with younger 20 somethings, and there was not a single “they/them” to be found. I did have a few female classmates who put “she/her” in their profiles, but this was few and far between.

This leads me to conclude that there are two possibilities here:

1. This nonbinary craze is mostly for high school and college kids and is something they grow out of when they enter the real world, or

2. This was because I was in the MBA program, and anyone who wants to be successful in business understands that they can’t be a weirdo who scares people away.

I think your second assumption it correct. I taught at an art school and had at least 2 out of every 12 students each semester ID as FTM or non binary, asking me to call them by different names and pronouns than on the class roster. Plus a few old fashioned gay or lesbian.

How quaint!

Transphobes!

#2. A lot of such people - even coming from the privileged backgrounds - almost all claim to be "anti-capitalists", proudly and incessantly express their contempt for capitalism (just like patriarchy, cishetnormativity, etc.). MBA = symbol of capitalism to them.

I teach at a large university.

The only students I've had who are trans are female. They all seem like they were misfits in high school and most seem spectrum adjacent. In addition, with one exception, they all come from privileged backgrounds.

I've also had a few trans colleagues. Only one was MtF. The rest were FtM or non-binary (but all born female). What they have in common is that, without exception, they were all butch lesbians before they transitioned/adopted they/them pronouns.

Just some observations.

It’s because you were in the MBA program.

It would have different if you were taking art or literature major or something that attracts those types.

Adding to r5, I have had four separate colleagues over the years -- all lesbians -- who have undergone elective mastectomies. Four.

As r6 correctly observes, I am in the humanities. But four different women loathing their breasts to the point of removing them ... it just seems ... sad to me.

seems like a social contagion.

This is all a scene.

Just like emo in the 2000s, goth in the 90’s, New Romantic in the 80’s, punk in the 70’s, hippies in the 60’s, beatnik in the 50’s. You can look at their backgrounds and mental issues and see they’d fit into all these scenes too from prior generations. There’s all sorts of elements they’ve taken from these scenes from fashion expression to self mutilation.

The only difference is this scene is extreme and literal. It’s not just about expression. There’s a difference between piercing your nose and chopping your tits off to be apart of a group. And there’s a lot of things kids are doing that are going to harm and effect their bodies and health in the future.

It's not interesting, it's... *T*R*A*N*S*P*A*M*.

R10 is just DL's Retard in Residence.

MBA's are not known to be self-reflective and are more interested in fitting in than personal integrity.

So non-binary MBAs are going to conceal it.

In about 10 years they are all going to pay the salaries of very expensive psychotherapists.

Delusion and narcissism are not forms of personal integrity.

by Anonymousreply 13May 17, 2022 12:15 PM

R12 is being facetious, I hope.

by Anonymousreply 14May 17, 2022 12:18 PM

FTMs tend to be alternative types. It seems transitioning is the ultimate 'alternative' statement.

by Anonymousreply 15May 17, 2022 12:32 PM

It’s the MBA context. I work in a nonprofit and all the young people getting hired and doing internships have their pronouns in their signatures. None of them are trans or non-binary but the pronoun shit seems commonplace.

When we met with last summer’s group of interns - they all made a point of saying their pronouns when they introduced themselves. Their pronouns were all consistent with their gender (was a bunch of women saying she/her/hers) so it was especially tedious. None of us older employees did pronouns in our intros to them. Enough already.
