Being fat is good because it means you will die very young.

Who gives a fuck this pill-popping bitch thinks. A grown man who becomes addicted to Xanax can't be trusted.

He is correct. I became morbidly obese after a medical injury left me bedridden for six years. I lost pretty much all circulation in my legs and developed diabetes and other problems.
I hate when I see this fat acceptance nonsense. I do not accept the way I became and struggle every day to get back to some sort of normal life, now that the original injury has been corrected.
Don't care who hates me for saying that, but it's the truth.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 16, 2022 9:08 PM |

"Beauty" is in the eye of the beholder. Some people find fat people beautiful and are sexually attracted to them primarily BECAUSE they are fat. So his statement may be true for him, but it isn't true for everyone.
However, had he said "Morbid obesity is not healthy or sustainable and should be discouraged" he would have been correct. The problem with the "at acceptance" movement is that it goes too far and seeks to eliminate all negative connotations around being fat, even the ones that are objectively true.
No, people shouldn't be made fun of or harassed for being fat (unless they're into that sort of thing, and some are) but they also shouldn't be encouraged to be and to stay fat. Accepting your body at whatever size it is can be healthy for the mind and ego, but it doesn't mean ignoring the reality.

John Goodman was gorgeous fat. Now he looks like a cadaver. There are many examples of pleasingly plump people who look like the huge headed walking dead after losing weight. I’m not disputing the heath benefits, merely the aesthetics.

He is on some sort of manic tear right now, he has posted dozens of times in the past few hours. He used to make some sense but he turned into this far right, ranting and raving lunatic over the past several years. I think he's using again. Or perhaps this is what happens when you're a "dry drunk" ex drug abuser.
Whenever that caravan was blocking Canada roads he was in a SUPER manic phase, just tweeting vitriol and bile endlessly about how Trudeau was the antichrist Hitler reincarnation etc. Not just retweets, but constant ranting. He and a few other Canadian guys lost the plot during that.

R3, there is a difference between appearance and a health condition. Congratulations on losing the weight, but if we were so harsh on everyone who hadn't handled their health issue perfectly, it would apply to most people at some time and not be helpful at all. It's no different from those with inherited wealth looking down on those who haven't made it, saying it shows they aren't worthy. You can appreciate your accomplishment without trashing someone else. Beauty is an esthetic concept and maybe overweight is not appealing to you because of your own past. But moving past something that isn't appealing rather than trashing them is still the better option.

I disagree with the posted assertion, in that there are plenty of facially attractive people who are overweight. Chrissy Metz, as big as she is, I think is actually very pretty in the face. No, I don't think her body is sexy (as much as a gay man can appreciate that), but I can see her other nice attributes and her pretty face without hindrance of her body. All my girlfriends, back in the day, thought Seth Rogen was sexy, despite being a heavier guy. So to the extent that he's pushing an idea of fat=ugly as a hard rule, that's just dumb.
With that said, I don't like the proliferation of heavier bodies in the media generally. Walking through Target tonight, I noticed several larger female mannequins throughout the clothing section, amongst the regular sizes. I don't find anything wrong with that, and it's a nice gesture on the part of the retailer; but it's definitely pandering to a level of inclusion that just comes across as shallow and blind. The fact is, larger and smaller women need different types of clothing than women not of their size, both practically and for aesthetics. I have a lot of female friends who are athletically built, not what one would consider fat, and they can't normally shop in the regular women's section. And it's similar for smaller framed women. My mother, who is a 5'0" tall and has shorter limbs, needs petite sizing and can rarely shop regular sizes. So lumping all women into one big hodgepodge for commercial purposes is really just awkward. While I understand that segregating clothing by sizing can be triggering, it's just a part of us all being different. What was also interesting is that there was not one single overweight mannequin in the mens clothing, and all the mannequins were of a younger 20-something, fit body type.

by Anonymous | reply 114 | May 17, 2022 4:30 AM |
r112 it's a bit beyond that. IIRC, when he was first controversial we had a couple of posters who knew him, who were either academics at UofT, or taught in the same field. They said at the time that he was seriously mentally ill . I don't remember what the diagnosis was, or if it was a personality disorder, but allegedly the admin had to handle him with kid gloves because of it. (In addition to his contract/university policies, Ontario has very well-defined human rights laws.) It caused friction w/other faculty because he was allowed to do things they weren't, like tape lectures for youtube, and any sanction would be politicized and cause a shit storm.
Maybe if they're still here and see this they'll chime in. Side note: based on my own family and personal diagnosis (bipolar II), this sounds awfully familiar. It figures he'd be a psychologist or psychiatrist.

by Anonymous | reply 116 | May 17, 2022 7:01 AM |
Beauty is subjective. There are cultures where obesity is admired and desired (not ours). In most cases, obesity is a consequence of food addiction, alcohol addiction, forced immobility, or a side effect of medication. Cultural values, the food industry and genetic propensity are also implicated. So obese people should not be shamed or blamed, although food addiction and alcohol addiction can be conquered, cultural values can be overcome, and people can learn to make healthier food choices..
But there is a lot of scientific evidence that shows that there are negative health consequences of obesity. Self-acceptance and fat acceptance should not include denial about this.

R24, I think he loves the attention, and in order to keep it going he has to give his far Right followers what they want. His comments have nothing to do with his profession. He used to discuss issues from a psychological perspective. Now he just trolls with the bras. He’s very petty. Sad to see what he’s turned into and this is coming from someone who doesn’t think the fat is beautiful movement is a good thing. Peterson is acting like a catty incel. That’s not how a professional behaves. He takes things personally. Like it’s someone an affront to his masculinity. He came out against gay marriage because that would be a win for the SJW that he hates. That’s so inappropriate for a so-called professional to behave. You’re going to punish people because the people you don’t like are for it? This guy is a psychologist? I think he needs therapy himself. I’ve agreed with him on many things but even I can see he’s spiraling.

However, they could sell a few issues thanks to making so-called historic moves but putting males and whales on the covers. Queer and woke loons may buy it. The attention will make potential advertisers want to work with the magazine.

R118 The idea of him as a therapist is horrifying. At this point I'd rather take handgun safety advice from William S Burroughs.

R17 "Sure, target fat people. It's the last socially accepted "ism" - fattism."
This is tiresome. Every group claim that theirs is the last acceptable prejudice. It's the victimhood contest. You don't win.

R17 So it's OK to attack a person's appearance when you do it? What's your point?

Hasn't he tweeted about slapping people he disliked and threatened to sue some woman?

R65 R72 IIRC the theory goes that only the wealthy could afford to eat well and stay out of the sun. The peasants were tanned and thin, therefore undesirable.

On the one hand, morbid obesity (there are medical categories of obesity) is unhealthy: Type 2 diabetes High cholesterol and heart disease Increased risk of many cancers High blood pressure Fatty liver disease Dementia Stroke Kidney disease Gout Asthma Blood clots Infertility and polycystic ovary syndrome Erectile dysfunction Pregnancy complications
On the other hand this guy is a clown:

[quote] Jordan Peterson - Being Fat Is NOT Beautiful
Amusing. You damn him for saying what datalounge has said every day for over 20 years. Saying "𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒆 𝒇𝒂𝒕" being the height of wit and wisdom here.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | May 17, 2022 6:21 PM |
Each to their own, but to most people fat is unattractive (I'm talking obese and morbidly obese here) - it has niche appeal, and isnt healthy to boot. So Jordan Peterson does have a point even if he's pretty fucked up in areas of his own life. Fat people cant expect to be found attractive by most of the rest of us. What they CAN expect is not to be treated badly just because they're fat in general life. As someone with a niche attraction myself to fem guys, I recognise that most gay men dont share my attraction to fems - but that said they should be treated with basic respect
by Anonymous | reply 128 | May 17, 2022 7:58 PM |
r128 yeah but I'd be willing to bet most straight men would find the model he was yelling about attractive. Jordans own wife is very thin and on the masculine side, incidentally.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | May 17, 2022 10:07 PM |
Fat bodies in 2022 America are not the same as fat bodies in BC 1000 in Mesopotamia. They now signify low status, slothfulness, or health issues. Women are looking for social status and access to resources. Men are looking for youth, fitness, and health. The CEO of a company with an average yet somewhat athletic body is the pinnacle of beauty for a modern woman. A Sports Illustrated front page model USED to be the pinnacle of beauty for a straight man. The CEO and a man on the cover of Men's Health are both the pinnacles of beauty for a gay man.

I will guarantee you that the prissy queens of Datalounge are far more worked up about this than straight guys are.

r130 this is the first image that came up when i googled "The CEO of a company with an average yet somewhat athletic body." If you're interested.

The fact that a so-called 'philosopher' is preoccupied with this shit is fucking hilarious. The question is not 'is fat attractive or not? But "Does it really matter if fat is attractive or not?" "Who gives a fuck about attractiveness actually?"
Peterson is a symptom of our increasingly materialistic, shallow, foolish world. He's smart in the way that a teenager can be smart. In a shallow, immature, skimming the surface, 'debate me', barely surviving kind of way but theres no wisdom, theres nothing real underneath. This goes for a lot of the people we're supposed to look up to.
Goethe once said that most of the political and religious leaders of his era were intellectually adults but had the spiritual and moral maturity of clever 20 year olds, and that they never developed beyond that, no matter how old they got.
It seems to me that current politicians, pudits, even religious leaders have the spiritual maturity of clever teenagers these days and thats all most people ever attain. Look at Peterson, or any of his ilk on the left or right. They're basically 14 year old souls in adult bodies.
I'm convinced that there will come a time when people no longer grow emotionally, ethically or spiritually after they are born. You'll come into the world fully formed in every way besides physically and intellectually.
So the entire world is stunted in a state of spiritual immaturity, looking for leadership and wisdom and a wise adult figure to tell them what to do and latch onto people like Peterson not realising they're just as stunted as themselves in every way that counts.

[quote]Thanks for discounting the nightmare I've gone through.
If you're for real, r35, you need professional mental help.
Like I said on the "medium fat" thread, I had an accident several years ago and can't move well enough to exercise, and can barely walk some days. I'm not sitting online screaming that all fatties are awful and that they shouldn't even be accepted as human beings because of it.
Yeah, it's a struggle to lose weight when you're not very mobile, and I sympathize with your plight, but you are taking your misery out on people who have nothing to do with your problems. I'd say you were doing that to make yourself feel better but if so, it's obviously not working, you're miserable through and through.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | May 18, 2022 2:13 AM |
If obesity did not have negative health consequences, and was just an aesthetic variation like extreme tattooing, would people authorise themselves to judge and belittle fat people?
by Anonymous | reply 137 | May 18, 2022 5:05 AM |
With some exceptions like R136, being obese is a choice. You choose to stuff your face with Oreos and to sit on the couch.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | May 18, 2022 9:06 AM |
Why are so many of you so bothered by fat people?
Are you former fatties?
I have been thin/normal weight all my life and don't think much about fat people, when I do, I mostly feel badly for them, as I am aware that there are millions of people who struggle with obesity and that it is becoming a worldwide issue, not just a US one.
What gives?

Most fat people are happier than Jordan Peterson.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | May 18, 2022 11:38 AM |
He's just an asshole at this point. He could have just said "not my cup of tea" or something else, or hey, nothing at all...but of course not. He's pandering to his base. It's all grifting at this point. As R133 so brilliantly stated it, he's basically reflective of the times we're in, where a society, and certainly some demographics of it, are looking for a parent-like figure to lead/teach them, and ultimately are getting conned by a grumpy, pseudo-intellectual asshat. But "cults of personality" are powerful these days, and that's where the money is.
For a man who's big thing is "clean your room", if you've ever seen him webcam from his home/office, it's a fucking mess. Literally.

Fair point R133
I've said that about Musk too, that his Twitter trolling is what you'd expect from a precocious 12 year old who just learned what a "boner" and a "boner-killer" were.

We beg to differ, Jordan. You're just seeing us through the prysm of skinny-tyranny and body fascism.

That JP "brain trust" is a woman hater, plain and simple. I got into a handful of his videos that were making sense at first until his weird opinions threw huge red flags. For one, "quality" women know the best use of their time is making and raising babies with a choice mate. Because, having worked with "top echelon" women - - e.g. the most beautiful women at the top of their game as lawyers and CEOs -- most women will never be that beautiful and accomplished no matter how hard they try. So, might as well do your best to land mister moneybags. This turd is an anachronism.
I'm not necessarily, "yay, fat" because I could lose a pound of two for my own general health. But people like him want to blast us back to the days when fat people, and anyone else who didn't fit the narrow standard of "normal" was bullied. We're not even out of that phenomenon yet. There is certainly no reason to suck society back into the meanness.

I don’t understand why so many see him as some kind of intellectual giant much less some kind of all knowing guru. He seems basic, inarticulate and thoroughly unexceptional to me.

Russell Brand is another person with a huge "cult of personality" following. Whatever he says, people flock to it and salivate over it. He's interesting and bright but not half as clever as he seems to think he is.
