I watched Michael Bay shooting a scene from one of the Transformers movies. He was a tyrant. Yelling and screaming obscenities at crew members who weren't moving fast enough. He seemed to be exactly what everyone says he is.

For the most part, his films are terrible but they did establish a unique visual style for action. I haven't seen The Rock in a long time but I remember enjoying it. It was over the top but not incomprehensible, and there is an enjoyable fan theory that Sean Connery's character is actually James Bond.

After The Rock, Bay seemed to never know when to pull back on his ultra-macho over-the-top aesthetic. The first half of The Island was great sci-fi, but the second half was typical Bay drivel.

Oh, and the big rumor about Bay is that he's the illegitimate (and secret) son of John Frankenheimer.
