Gay Lisp

Did any of you take steps to rid yourself of sibilant Ss ?

Asking for a friend.

Why is the 'gay lisp' a thing only in English speaking countries? Never heard of it in my corner of the world and gay men don't lisp here.

Maybe it's just a coincidence and I'd have it if I was straight, but I still dislike it.

I think it's holding me back personally and professionally.

I watched this a few years ago but I think it concluded as "I'll just have to accept it" because it was too painful a process.

Why do people call it a lisp, it is nothing like a lisp at all! What gays sometimes have is a hissssssy "s" sound, or as it used to be called, "lights out in the snake pit"!

Cindy Brady had a lisp. Gays have a hissy "s" sound!

I sure did, babsssysss!

OP, some people have a lisp, and yes, you can "correct" it if you want. Straight people can also have a lisp. I think many gay men affect it as a part of a performance, and it's stereotypically associated with nelly gay men.

I think the stigma about it is wrong, but it's read as "feminine" somehow, even though most people, including women, don't lisp.

OP is the author of that super creepy and insulting Unborn Fetus thread.

Possibly from our trying to emulate what our schools' speech therapists tried to get us to in 4th grade when we were pulled out of class to go read the word "stove" over and over until we got it "right".

I never had a lisp.

But I did have an accent they thought I needed to get rid of.

I was in speech therapy in elementary school for a lisp. Got rid of the lisp, but still ended up with a speech impediment where I don’t put my tongue against my teeth when I make an “L” sound. I can do it, but it takes lots of effort and remembering to do it. It sounds like I’m swallowing a syllable when I say words that start with or have an L in them.

And I also have a vocal chord dysfunction where my vocal cord close instead of open when I make vowel sounds. Getting that diagnosis was super fun because they ran a fiber optic camera up my nose and down my throat! The downside is when I’m nervous and speaking in public, I’m not breathing correctly and could pass out. So that’s something fun to look forward to.
