The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix: anyone watching?

I read the first book years ago and enjoyed it (for what it is) but could never make it through the movie with Matthew McConaughey.

The lead, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is quite sexy and has great chemistry with his two ex wives played by Neve Campbell and Becki Newton.

It's certainly not breaking any new ground, but was a quick and enjoyable watch while I was home sick yesterday.

I loved the movie, one of the last of its kind. , so I will check out the TV show.

He has a Cockgobblerish quality to him.

What is its kind?

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2022 7:23 PM

A glossy entertainment for adults. Think Sydney Pollack, Redford, Douglas.

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2022 7:25 PM

Thanks, R4.

Christopher Gorham !!! You may remember him as Henry the geek on Ugly Betty

I only watched the movie for Ryan Phillippe. I love it when he plays a bad boy.

That was some lackluster acting and storytelling. Horrible dialog (that line when we first meet the mother of his child 🙄) and plot twists. He always outsmarts everyone, key witnesses magically appear in court, unrealistic court proceedings, police shows ip right in time etc. I'm not surprised CBS bailed on this show and it ended up on Netflix. The way he was telling his "driver" the 101 of lawyering in the desert was especially cringeworthy.

No! Do tell.

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2022 8:54 PM

You've never watched a courtroom drama before have you R10?

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2022 8:54 PM

^Actually I do watch them all the time, but the Lincoln Lawyer is just lazy screenwriting and doesn't even make an effort to be subtle or realistic.

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2022 9:00 PM

Also, a good show does not need characters to explain proceedings or storylines tor the audience.

by Anonymousreply 14May 14, 2022 9:08 PM

Does Christopher Gorham play Manuel's lover?

by Anonymousreply 15May 14, 2022 9:42 PM

It seems decent so far. He's good, his accent slips through a little bit.. could be impossbile to completely flatten it. Not bad to look at

by Anonymousreply 16May 15, 2022 2:48 PM

They made the character a little more Spanish per the LA Times interview. It is LA.

He was rumored to be Richard Schiff’s fuck toy.

by Anonymousreply 18May 15, 2022 4:27 PM

From The West Wing? He's gay?

by Anonymousreply 19May 15, 2022 4:34 PM

Did Neve Campbell think she wandered onto the Scream set.? She's so subdued. I keep expecting her to say "I've been through this. A lot."

by Anonymousreply 20May 15, 2022 4:35 PM

Neve Campbell has a lot of actor’s ticks she needs to tamp down.

by Anonymousreply 21May 15, 2022 5:24 PM

If you would watch it all the way through to the end you would see that it is an excellent movie.

by Anonymousreply 22May 15, 2022 5:49 PM

I love the movie.

The Netflix show is very Netflix. Cheesy and second-rate. But I will watch it in a pinch.

by Anonymousreply 23May 15, 2022 6:21 PM

The lead actor looks like the love child of Joe Tenney and Demian Bechier.

by Anonymousreply 24May 15, 2022 6:23 PM

Astroglide will work in a pinch!

by Anonymousreply 25May 15, 2022 8:11 PM

Does Christopher Gorman get raped in prison?

by Anonymousreply 26May 16, 2022 11:58 PM

Oof the lead is sexy af.

by Anonymousreply 27May 17, 2022 12:00 AM

I swear this was already a movie?

by Anonymousreply 30May 17, 2022 12:50 AM

I tried rewatching the film recently and made it 20 minutes in. Better Call Saul really raised the bar for lawyer stories. TLL seemed REALLY dumb by comparison, like CSI Miami level dumb. Can't imagine watching the show

by Anonymousreply 31May 17, 2022 1:43 PM

Finished watching the other day. I enjoyed it. Wonder if it will get picked up for another season.

by Anonymousreply 32May 19, 2022 8:40 AM

NYTimes piece. Seems like they could do more seasons. This one was
largely based on the second Mickey Haller novel, “The Brass Verdict.

Of course it will get another lackluster season and then Netflix will cancel it in its second year. Unless a show is highly successful, they always cancel it after 2 seasons.

by Anonymousreply 34May 20, 2022 11:38 AM

No.

No.

by Anonymousreply 35May 20, 2022 11:41 AM

Just watched the first episode, will keep watching it just for Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Physically totally my type. Never saw the movie or read the books, so this story is new to me. I like the way his character is written and played, an intriguing mix of 'I know what I'm doing' and 'I can't do it.', both in a quite authentic way.

by Anonymousreply 36May 23, 2022 1:30 PM

It’s kind of comical how literally every property is being remade with a Latin lead.

by Anonymousreply 37May 23, 2022 1:42 PM

He's AWG.

by Anonymousreply 38May 23, 2022 1:50 PM

American Wire Gauge?

by Anonymousreply 39May 23, 2022 1:52 PM

Average white girl?

by Anonymousreply 40May 23, 2022 2:23 PM

Neve Campbell? No, thanks. Can't stand her breathy, halting, twitchy acting.

by Anonymousreply 41May 23, 2022 2:34 PM

The lead though handsome is a block of wood. I gave it a try and bailed on the first episode.

Does it get better?

by Anonymousreply 42May 23, 2022 6:49 PM
It’s kind of comical how literally every property is being remade with a Latin lead.

Technically, not a stretch. In the novels Mickey Haller is the half-brother of Harry Bosch, his mother is Mexican, and the books reference his looks as more on the Hispanic side.

by Anonymousreply 43May 23, 2022 6:55 PM

R43 okay but... Charmed redux ... Love, Victor (not Simon).. One Day at a Time.. Party of Five... Roswell... Magnum PI...

Sorry but erasure isn't the solution to the representation problem.

It's a time of great hypocrisy when it comes to eradicating racism and inequity - since people seem to think that white hatred and erasure are acceptable solutions to the problem.

I never took positions like this until I noticed the insanity a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 44May 23, 2022 10:33 PM

What's Manuel Garcia-Rulfo's story? Wikipedia has no relationship info. Was he ever married?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 45May 23, 2022 11:41 PM

R44, the casting here is true to the literary source. The character is literally half-Mexican.

by Anonymousreply 46May 24, 2022 1:47 AM

R44 You can add interracial marriage, gay characters, obligatory black/Asian friend to the diversity list. I'm gay and I think representation is great, but it's just ridiculous that they add the same stuff in every series just to check every "diversity box".

by Anonymousreply 47May 24, 2022 9:35 AM

Less diversity for R47, Hollywood! He’s longing for the days of straight white dominion with an occasional token gay friend carrying a chihuahua.

by Anonymousreply 48May 24, 2022 11:13 AM

^Assclown

by Anonymousreply 49May 24, 2022 11:19 AM

The title is so dumb.

by Anonymousreply 50May 24, 2022 11:23 AM

The first episode gave a perfect opportunity for a frontal shot, when he took a shower after coming back from the beach. I wonder if Netflix planned to do it but the actor chickened out.

It was entertaining, but I figured out one of the big plot points by episode 2 or 3.

by Anonymousreply 51June 13, 2022 5:40 AM

Well smell you!

by Anonymousreply 52June 13, 2022 12:27 PM
It’s kind of comical how [bold]literally[/bold] every property is being remade with a Latin lead.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

by Anonymousreply 53June 13, 2022 12:36 PM

I really enjoy the show. It's very low-key, not very demanding, just fine for weeknights. The show perfectly fits the mold of a CBS cop drama show like Magnum PI, so I'm surprised they passed on it. And I like Manuel Garcia Rulfo, physically and his acting. Only watched four episodes so far, but I'll finish it.

by Anonymousreply 54June 13, 2022 2:03 PM
The lead actor looks like the love child of Joe Tenney and Demian Bechier.

He reminds me on and off of Anthony La Paglia or Don Diamont.

by Anonymousreply 55July 31, 2022 9:42 PM

I like his dad bod. Looking forward to a second season.

by Anonymousreply 56July 31, 2022 9:46 PM

Watched the entire season, very enjoyable. As R54 says, it's very low-key, and understated.

But good.

by Anonymousreply 57July 31, 2022 10:43 PM

The second season is out tonight. It's only 5 episodes.

by Anonymousreply 58July 6, 2023 7:24 AM
could never make it through the movie with Matthew McConaughey.

Same here, OP. It was a bring a knife and fork to the sawdust film, boring beyond belief.

by Anonymousreply 59July 6, 2023 8:30 AM

Started second season and was quickly reminded that Angus Sampson delivers all his lines in the most grotesquely affected vocal fry. Why don’t directors say, “you can just speak, you know. It IS possible” instead of waving through such awful displays of pretentiousness?

by Anonymousreply 60July 10, 2023 8:45 PM

I’m not feeling Season 2A at all— neither the “Jagged Edge” ripoff main storyline with Lana Parrilla nor the Cisco/Lorna biker-gang relapse subplot. Here’s hoping 2B shapes up 2B better.

by Anonymousreply 61July 10, 2023 9:15 PM
The lead actor looks like the love child of Joe Tenney and Demian Bechier.

Presumably you meant JON Tenney and Demian BICHIR.

by Anonymousreply 62July 10, 2023 10:35 PM

Manuel Garcia Rulfo was in Ryan Reynold’s movie 6 Underground and he was sexy as hell in that. I’m guessing that they had a torrid relationship during the filming, I have no basis to say that, just wishful thinking.

by Anonymousreply 63August 24, 2023 11:08 PM

Uh-huh. That's nice, R44.

So your virulent and obvious racism is recent? How thrilling for you.

"White erasure" OMG - the humanity! Where shall you go, what shall you do?

Now that only 80% of movies and television shows star white people, how can you possibly go on?

Clearly, R44, you are living in a hellish dystopian universe of madness.
