The CW Bloodbath

Holy shit. Tons of shows getting canceled on The CW.

And yet the indentured slaves that are the cast of Riverdale must return, they are weeping openly.

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2022 2:39 AM

Yeah, it was shocking for many people.

People are saying they’re cleaning house for the possible sale of the network.

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2022 2:55 AM

Oh, no! They canceled Dynasty!

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2022 3:02 AM

Hahahahaha Hahahahaha!

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2022 3:03 AM

I had totally forgotten about The CW. One advantage of dropping cable.

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2022 3:08 AM

I enjoyed Swamp Thing, canceled in 21

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2022 3:12 AM

It’s not a cable channel.

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2022 3:21 AM

If they really clean house for a sale, I'm surprised CW went ahead with the Nancy Drew spin-off.

It will be a lot tougher for "indie" productions to sell their projects to TV channels and own a significant stake of their work, with everybody wanting to fully own the content, so they can use it for their streaming platforms and have the control over international distribution and licensing agreements.

But then studios and TV channels always had creative differences.

CW has had nothing of merit since Crazy Ex Girlfriend finished its run.

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2022 1:48 PM

That’s strange, I thought Naomi had decent numbers compared to other shows. Maybe I read the numbers wrong?

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2022 2:04 PM

R10 I was wondering the same thing.

I hope Kung Fu and Stargirl don’t get canceled.

by Anonymousreply 16May 14, 2022 3:57 PM

Sucks to be them.

Meanwhile, I'm celebrating season three!

by Anonymousreply 17May 14, 2022 8:10 PM

The viewers and demographic of Walker are simply abysmal. It not only got renewed but received a prequel.

Also, they just went forward with a spinoff of Supernatural that no one in that fandom is asking for.

Clearly, these are great moves to grow audience and ad/streaming revenue! Surely this will be the year that The CW's two-decade long streak in the red will be broken!

by Anonymousreply 18May 14, 2022 8:18 PM

Sorry jealous hater beast at R18, but Jared and Supernatural are not going anywhere.

They're both here to stay!!!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 19May 14, 2022 8:22 PM

Maybe the network, however long it lasts, is setting their sights on an older demographic.

The Supernatural fans are older and are watching more grown up content.

Walker is a dramedy, for the most part. The two prequels will be about adults and their difficulties. So the network is looking to branch out.

by Anonymousreply 20May 14, 2022 9:43 PM

Not surprising.

They are trying to sell it off post sale to Discovery. Potential buyers probably do not want to be encumbered by older legacy shows that aren't pulling big numbers and are probably expensive at this stage of their lifecycles.

by Anonymousreply 21May 14, 2022 10:05 PM

I enjoyed Dynasty. I hope Gilles and the actor who played Sammy Jo move on to good shows. And Adam Huber moves on to Next Door Studios.

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2022 10:12 PM

CW should test out a new show called "Destiel: Together in Heaven"

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 23May 14, 2022 10:42 PM

An CW insider claims that the reasons for all these cancellations is due to the 1 billion dollar deal with Netflix for streaming rights for shows from the CW ending in 2019, foreign sales drying up, the CW parent networks wanting to boost their streaming services HBO Max and Paramount+ and needing to keep the rights in house to compete with Netflix. Dynasty for example no longer being profitable to make.

by Anonymousreply 34May 15, 2022 7:32 AM

As other posters pointed out, this isn't about quality or viewership, it's about following the Netflix business model and fully own your shows to use them for streaming distribution worldwide. I think this will hit indie productions, writers, and showrunners the most by being reduced to selling their ownership rights upfront with no chance of ever getting super rich from their own ideas. Basically like the creative team of Disney or the inventors who worked for Thomas Edison.

I’m glad the fake Charmed show was cancelled. It was never about having a successful reboot or making a great show. It existed to provide woke casting.

by Anonymousreply 38May 15, 2022 8:06 AM

[Quote] I’m glad the fake Charmed show was cancelled. It was never about having a successful reboot or making a great show. It existed to provide woke casting.

I gave up after the first season. I don't know who's genius idea it was to break up Niko and Mel after a few episodes.

by Anonymousreply 39May 15, 2022 8:20 AM

I have to admit I am not up-to-date with any of the shows, except Superman & Lois and Legacies. Still have to catch up on Charmed, Riverdale, Batgirl, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.

I hope Nancy Drew and the new spin-off are safe. I love ND. I am bummed about them cancelling Legacies after they've introduced a hot new gay character played by Zane Phillips.

Most of American is white. LatinX charmed was dumb.

by Anonymousreply 42May 15, 2022 9:45 AM

ANd of COURSE most of these shows have gay (male) characters which means we will have even fewer gay characters on tv. It's abysmal as is, now we will have like 5 in total. We lost 3 gay characters on Good Sam too when that got cancelled. This fucking sucks.

by Anonymousreply 43May 15, 2022 10:29 AM

Broadcast is now full of Dick Wolf shows. FBI Tuesdays, Chicago Wednesdays, Law& Order Thursdays. I watch it all

by Anonymousreply 44May 15, 2022 10:49 AM

Walker now has two gay characters. FYI.

Does anyone know why Walker's Latina partner left the show?

Was she part of the CW Bloodbath?

I'm actually glad she's gone. That actress had zero chemistry with Jared, and they were supposed to be the main characters.

They need to bring back Felicity!

by Anonymousreply 49May 15, 2022 1:44 PM

I'm very impressed at how booked Jensen is. I guess that will shut up everyone who thought he would be finished after Supernatural.

Did Jared get some kind of "hair help" for his new series?

I was one of the 6 people who watched Dynasty. It was a fun show that didn't take itself too seriously. I also watch Nancy Drew. Everything else I gave up on. The Arrowverse shows just all came undone. Riverdale was just stupid.

by Anonymousreply 50May 15, 2022 1:51 PM

CW just ordered 10 episodes of a new series based on Lord of the Flies. They must be aiming for fans of Lost.

by Anonymousreply 51May 15, 2022 1:54 PM

How many shows did Berlanti lose this season? He was at one point producing 7-8 shows for the CW. Does he already have a deal with a new network?

I guess Netflix will also lose the rights to most CW shows and they will move to HBOmax? I'm in Europe and Netflix lost a lot of shows lately to other streaming services. Shows like Prison Break and 24 have been on Netflix forever and they are all on Disney now. There are hardly any shows left if they also lose the superhero shows. Modern Family, Friends, the Walking Dead will also soon move to other services.

by Anonymousreply 52May 15, 2022 1:55 PM

Unless you are either (1) a teenage girl or (2) a tragically basic gay man, this won't affect your life one bit.

Legends, Batwoman and Naomi. So you have the Flash, Superman and Stargirl currently. Supergirl ended at the right time but Black Lightning deserved better.

by Anonymousreply 62May 15, 2022 7:06 PM

What is the CW?

by Anonymousreply 63May 15, 2022 8:24 PM

The CW wasn't the only one dropping the ax on shows:

[quote] TV Bloodbath: 17 Shows Cancelled in 48 Hours — Which Cut Hurt the Most?

Well, that was brutal.

A total of 17 broadcast series were laid to rest over the past 48 hours as the broadcast networks began cleaning house in advance of next week’s fall presentations (aka the “Upfronts”).

The body count was highest at about-to-be-sold The CW, which axed seven series this week, including Legacies, Charmed, 4400, Naomi, Roswell, New Mexico, In the Dark and Dynasty.

CBS shuttered nearly a half dozen programs, including Magnum P.I, B Positive and Good Sam, while NBC pulled the plug on three (including comedies Mr. Mayor and Kenan).

Fox, meanwhile, parted ways with two series, Our Kind of People and Pivoting.

Miraculously, ABC — which in recent years has had some of the largest cancellation hauls — brought back all five of its remaining scripted bubble shows.

“I haven’t seen a bloodbath of broadcast TV cancellations like today in a while,” lamented writer-producer Phillip Iscove (Sleepy Hollow, Station 19) on Twitter. “Absolutely brutal. My sympathies to all the writers, cast and crew out there.”

by Anonymousreply 83May 16, 2022 3:22 AM

You might not be far off, R79.

Jensen and Jared were both given spin-offs, even though many people are pissed off about the Supernatural prequel.

For some reason, the network has always been very accommodating to the guys.

I guess 15 years on a network gives you some privileges and the benefit of the doubt. The show is still popular all over the world and those conventions, even though the studios don’t own them, still bring the show worldwide attention.

by Anonymousreply 84May 16, 2022 3:49 AM

There never seemed to be any behind the scenes drama from Supernatural. That's probably why CW likes working with them.

R14, why is Leslie Bibb wearing SMG’s outfit from her fight with Faith in Graduation Day Part 1?

by Anonymousreply 91May 16, 2022 5:26 AM

[Quote]And All American has not been cancelled.

Of course not. When Berlanti's husband ended his mediocre soccer career, he needed a new job so Berlanti made him a producer on one of his 7 million CW shows. The show had abysmal ratings and mediocre reviews, but if your husband is a big shot in Hollywood who cares about ratings.

by Anonymousreply 92May 16, 2022 8:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 97May 16, 2022 8:20 AM

Why did The CW stop being the DC network? I haven't watched it since I cut the cord years ago though. I'm not surprised though, people have more options with streaming. Mostly teens watched this network because their parents have cable. Arrow and Flash brought a straight older male audience who would obsess over it but I think both those shows ended.

The WB kept Smallville, 7th Heaven and Charmed on for an extremely long time but they had strong ratings. Supernatural was the last one of those type of shows that became the flagship. Not surprised they are milking it for the OCD Supernatural fangirls. No one gives a flying shit about Jared, Jensen and the other guy outside of that cult.

by Anonymousreply 98May 16, 2022 9:11 AM

[quote] Why did The CW stop being the DC network?

by Anonymousreply 99May 16, 2022 9:18 AM

They had some pretty good teen/family shows back in the late 90s and early 00s. I stopped paying attention when most of their shows were superhero and Berlanti shows.

by Anonymousreply 100May 16, 2022 9:26 AM

They should bring back 7th Heaven. Make it about the culture wars. Except Jessica Biel who is busy and Stephen Collins who is a pedo. The rest of the cast isn't doing anything. Catherine Hicks needs to be back on TV!

by Anonymousreply 106May 16, 2022 11:58 AM

On 7th Heaven. Barry Watson's character Matt who was raised Evangelical Christian got married to a Jewish girl. That alone would make an interesting plot alone especially how they raise their kids. Brenda Hampton would of course make it about self-righteous, homely Lucy (her self insert) and her studly husband.

by Anonymousreply 107May 16, 2022 12:09 PM

I think the last show I watched regularly there was iZombie. I watched Legends though maybe the fourth season, and then it went from being a show that did not take itself too seriously and have fun, to being a little too silly. The magic season might have been the end for me. I started getting sucked into Riverdale the first season, but it went off the rails pretty quickly. I would catch shows like the Flash occasionally, but once iZombie finished and I stopped watching Legends, I just never flipped to the channel, so I would not see a commercial for one of the shows and decide to check out an episode. I did watch Supernatural until maybe the second or third time on of the brothers died during one of the apocalypses, and came back changed and with a secret.

I feel most of the superhero shows focused way too much time on relationship angst and not much on just some comic book fun. I remember even back in the days of Smallville, the villain of the week would be resolved 45 to 50 minutes in, and then there would be some 5 to 10 minute scene at the end with Clark and Lana in the barn.

Granted, a lot of it might be that I am a couple decades too old for the shows and what they were going for...

by Anonymousreply 108May 16, 2022 12:58 PM

The bigger issue, beyond the sale, is streaming rights. CW originally made a deal that Netflix would get all their shows the day after their seasons wrapped.

Warners wants their shows on HBOMax and CBS wants theirs on Paramount+. And fire sale real estate was not enough to get them to invest further.

by Anonymousreply 109May 16, 2022 1:05 PM

I’m surprised Dynasty made it past the 3rd Krystle and 2nd Alexis.

by Anonymousreply 110May 16, 2022 1:11 PM

R110 I have forgotten they even had a Dynasty reboot… Did any of the original cast even bothered to do a cameo?

by Anonymousreply 111May 16, 2022 1:15 PM

No R111. It wasn't that kind of reboot. The original was just source material.

by Anonymousreply 112May 16, 2022 1:22 PM

R106 Catherine said she was interested in a reboot without Stephen. But they should probably just start over with a new cast/characters. Simon and Sandy were the only ones i didn't end up hating by the end.

by Anonymousreply 113May 16, 2022 2:13 PM

CW should try out KRYPTON.

That show was so awesome, and SyFy killed it for no reason.

It was one of the best things they had on that stupid network (until Chucky came along), but they axed it.

The acting was good, the storyline was good, and the special effects were great.

Plus, Cameron Cuffe was damned hot and I loved the bisexual Adam Strange character.

[Quote] The acting was good, the storyline was good, and the special effects were great.

Was Wallis good? Because she was terrible on Batwoman.

Season 2 of Krypton was just as good as season one, which is rare.

Yes, The CW should rescue shows more often. The WB rescued Sister, Sister and Sabrina.

by Anonymousreply 117May 16, 2022 2:33 PM

Well I for one am shocked that shows whose ratings rarely trouble 500k might not be profitable enough to continue producing, though slightly less shocked than I am over the fact they managed to last longer than two episodes in the first place.

Today the money is in streaming and that old standby, foreign sales.

They should produce more family oriented stuff and not more than 2-3 superhero shows. People are sick of superhero movies and series everywhere. Young people were obsessed with theWB when I was in college. Everyone was either watching Buffy, Dawson, Gilmore Girls, Charmed or Felicity. People spent endless hours online discussing characters and shows.

I remember when the 7th Heaven Mom and the kids were arguing about Eminem and if his music was "appropriate". Or when the Dad found out his perfect wife smoked weed in college (this went viral on Twitter last year). Can you guys imagine the hilarity when these people discuss Trump, Critical Race Theory, abortion or woke culture? The recaps for these shows were also amazing (what was the name of that site again?).

Dynasty got about 190,000 viewers Friday. lolololololololololol

Stargirl is the best superhero show. You guys should watch it. Season 2 had motherfucking Eclipso! One of the best DC villains.

And one of DC’s most noteworthy gay superheroes, Obsidian, is coming in season 3!

Bisexual Adam Strange? C'mon.

Unless his girlfriend Alanna was participating she would have kicked his ass for cheating.

Not lying.

Krypton alluded to it at the beginning, but then back tracked, for some reason.

This is the guy Adam was checking out...

They showed him bare assed, and Adam was clearly attracted to him.

But for some reason, all evidence of that has been deleted from the internet.

Based on the photo at R125, Adam Strange is a bottom.

I think the last time I watched CW was when that Amanda Bynes and Jenny Garth show was on.

[quote]Krypton alluded to it at the beginning, but then back tracked, for some reason.

"For some reason" = Former DC executive Geoff Johns vetoing it.

The news behind that came out years later during the Ray Fisher vs Joss Wheedon/DC debacle as there had been multiple issues of discrimination with various DC projects.

Geoff Johns not wanting Krypton to even broach the subject was one of the issues. Johns himself said that wasn't true because he pushed the idea of Batwoman being a lesbian but the sources all worked on Krypton and they spoke to The Hollywood Reporter which isn't known for running things without serious backup. Johns also had an issue with Regé-Jean Page, formerly of Bridgerton.

This news is somehow harmful to marginalized people.

I always had a crush on Shaun Sipos from Krypton.

The thought of him being a bisexual bottom is hot.

Lol did he expect a cookie? And they cancelled Batwoman for an even worse Batman spin-off.

by Anonymousreply 132June 18, 2022 12:39 PM

Stargirl is coming to end with season 3 and Nancy Drew with season 4. The Winchesters, Walker:Independence, Kung Fu, Superman and Lois, Gotham Knights, All American and All American:Homecoming are now considered on the bubble as to whether they will be renewed or canceled according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Nextstar wants nimble bit profitable shows.

R122 I watched Stargirl Season 2 and thought it was a mess. None of the characters really worked for me. Was surprised it even got a third season.

Good luck with that if they cancel all of those shows.
