Who could headline a revival of Auntie Mame?

With so many past hit shows being revived on Broadway, it's time for a legit new production of Auntie Mame (the straight comedy, not the musical). Who could play her?

by Anonymousreply 77May 23, 2022 12:25 AM

No one. That role is all Roz Russell into perpetuity.

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2022 12:40 AM

If only Gary had talked her out of it.....

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2022 12:41 AM

Taylor Dayne

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2022 12:45 AM

Allison Janney

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2022 12:47 AM

Cher was supposed to star in a TV adaptation many years ago.

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2022 12:48 AM

Fun fact: Rosalind Russell was only 51 when “Auntie Mame” came out.

All of the ladies on this list are too old to play her now.

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2022 12:53 AM

Only if they show the character Ralph Devine fully-frontal as he demonstrates the game of fish families. Who can play him? We've already seen Jesse Williams. Maybe Jussie Smolett on his redemption tour?

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2022 12:57 AM

I nominate Natasha Lyonne.

by Anonymousreply 8May 14, 2022 1:00 AM

I've got it! All black cast. "Aunt Mamie" - Tyler Perry's Medea in title role.

by Anonymousreply 9May 14, 2022 1:04 AM

at one time, Tilda Swinton was trying to get a remake done

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2022 1:06 AM

I thought Tilda would’ve been an interesting choice. Not sure about Cher. Maybe 10 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2022 1:07 AM

Alexandra Billings IS Mame!

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2022 1:08 AM

Annette Bening

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2022 1:12 AM

If you read the book (which I recommend), Auntie Mame is in her thirties and forties while she's raising Patrick. So those ladies, scintillating as they are, are too old.

Believe it or not, actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Aubrey Plaza are actually the right age range for the role.

by Anonymousreply 14May 14, 2022 1:18 AM

Angela Bassett can do anything.

Viola getting all the credit for Angela and Alfre's groundbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 15May 14, 2022 1:22 AM

Y'all ageist folks need to realize that there's a long tradition of women of a certain age playing much younger characters. They can get away with it on stage, whereas the camera is less forgiving. For Pete's sake, Sarah Bernhardt played Hamlet when she was in her 70s.

by Anonymousreply 16May 14, 2022 1:27 AM

Jennifer Tilly

by Anonymousreply 17May 14, 2022 1:35 AM

Madonna

by Anonymousreply 18May 14, 2022 1:37 AM

Beanie as Ito might be ok. I don't even know if she'd get all the laughs as Gooch.

by Anonymousreply 19May 14, 2022 1:48 AM

Tilda could pull this whimsy high flown stuff off. Cate would just overdo it.

by Anonymousreply 20May 14, 2022 1:51 AM

Mike Pence as Mr. Upson -- keep him away from politics

by Anonymousreply 21May 14, 2022 1:53 AM

Well if Mrs. Patrick Campbell could originate the role of Eliza at 49(what was she like 30 years too old?) and 70 is the new 50 she could be played at this point by Vanessa Redgrave.

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2022 2:08 AM

Ben Platt

by Anonymousreply 23May 14, 2022 2:16 AM

Bette Midler is the obvious choice, but I would go with Leslie Ann Warren, Pam Dawber, Bess Armstrong types. Producers would probably cast Morgan Fairchild or Connie Sellecca. Maybe someone ageless like Ann-Margret, Stella Stevens, Stefanie Powers.

by Anonymousreply 24May 14, 2022 2:24 AM

Sara Ramirez. Guaranteed laughs.

by Anonymousreply 25May 14, 2022 2:25 AM

Vanessa Williams

by Anonymousreply 26May 14, 2022 2:32 AM

Glen Close

by Anonymousreply 27May 14, 2022 2:35 AM

Now I hear Catherine O'Hara saying, "Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving" in a Moira Rose voice.

by Anonymousreply 28May 14, 2022 2:35 AM

I can totally hear Coolidge saying, "Darling! I'm your Auntie Mame!" She'd be fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 29May 14, 2022 2:55 AM

Mindy Cohn.

Mindy... as MAME!!!

by Anonymousreply 30May 14, 2022 2:59 AM

R30, do better please.

by Anonymousreply 31May 14, 2022 3:10 AM

r31. OKay.

Kim Fields as MAME!!

by Anonymousreply 32May 14, 2022 3:11 AM

R32, stop trying please.

by Anonymousreply 33May 14, 2022 3:20 AM

Must every remake feature an All Black Cast? So over the whole woke thing

by Anonymousreply 34May 14, 2022 3:55 AM

Gabby Sidibe as... MAME!!!

by Anonymousreply 35May 14, 2022 3:58 AM

You can't spell Mame without Anne Hathamameway.

by Anonymousreply 36May 14, 2022 4:11 AM

So you really want to see a 75-year-old playing 35? Why not just watch the Lucy "Mame," then?

by Anonymousreply 37May 14, 2022 11:18 AM

Because the Roz Russell one is superior, r37.

by Anonymousreply 38May 14, 2022 11:56 AM

Jean Smart.

She can't sing at all but she's great on stage.

by Anonymousreply 39May 14, 2022 12:16 PM

The choice is obvious: Billy Porter. Will satisfy all of the criteria for woke Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 40May 14, 2022 12:22 PM

Mame Dennis may be extravagant and bigger than life, but she's not hammy.

by Anonymousreply 41May 14, 2022 2:58 PM

Chritine Baranski as Vera

by Anonymousreply 42May 14, 2022 3:36 PM

June Diane Raphael would make a great Vera. She has the delivery and droll/acidic temperament for it.

Sarah Lancashire - from many UK productions and the recent HBO Max show about Julia Child - would be my vote for Mame. She may be a smidge old for it (late 50s) but after seeing this number I think she'd be beyond excellent as Mame.

Unless the entire cast is trans, Xir, Xi, Unknown Pronoun United will boycott the entire production. IT'S.LITERAL.VIOLENCE!

by Anonymousreply 44May 14, 2022 7:11 PM

Sarah Lancashire who plays Julia Child on the HBO Max series Julia.

by Anonymousreply 45May 14, 2022 7:20 PM

Yes, R45.

by Anonymousreply 46May 14, 2022 7:31 PM

sorry, I meant to sign that as R43

by Anonymousreply 47May 14, 2022 7:31 PM

Lens Dunham has the New York spirt and crazy aunt energy.

by Anonymousreply 48May 14, 2022 7:51 PM

I can see Nicole Kidman in the role. She has incredible range and would nail the comedy.

by Anonymousreply 49May 14, 2022 9:33 PM

Zombie Arlene Golonka

by Anonymousreply 50May 14, 2022 9:36 PM

If Mame is early fifties, count me out.

by Anonymousreply 51May 14, 2022 9:52 PM

I would ant to see Catherine O'Hara do it exactly like her Lola Heatherton character.

"HA-HA! Beauregarde! I want to have ALL your children!

You're so Southern gentrified... IT'S SCARY!"

by Anonymousreply 52May 14, 2022 9:55 PM

Cynthia Nixon for Mame. Che Diaz for Vera. With all new comedy love scenes!

by Anonymousreply 53May 14, 2022 9:56 PM

[quote] Cynthia Nixon for Mame. Che Diaz for Vera. With all new comedy love scenes!

"We'll always be / Finger-bangin' babies, / Friends, scissorers, and pals...."

by Anonymousreply 54May 14, 2022 10:39 PM

Neil Patrick Harris is "Auntie Flame."

by Anonymousreply 55May 15, 2022 1:28 PM

Billy Porter. And ONLY Billy Porter.

by Anonymousreply 56May 15, 2022 1:31 PM

NPH is Guncle Mame!

by Anonymousreply 57May 15, 2022 1:43 PM

Patti LuPone. I'd like to see her in a straight show.

by Anonymousreply 58May 15, 2022 4:15 PM

[quote]Jean Smart. She can't sing at all but she's great on stage.

It doesn't matter if she can't sing. OP asked about Auntie Mame, which is a play. Mame is the musical of Auntie Mame.

by Anonymousreply 59May 15, 2022 4:23 PM

Wendie Malick.

by Anonymousreply 60May 15, 2022 4:27 PM

A post-SATC Sarah Jessica Parker would have made sense fifteen years ago as Auntie Mame, with Kristen Johnson as Vera, Melissa McCarthy as Gooch and Matthew Broderick as Dwight Babcock.

by Anonymousreply 61May 15, 2022 4:38 PM

Kim Cattrall

by Anonymousreply 62May 15, 2022 5:31 PM

Cattrall would be a hoot playing Auntie Mame visiting Ralph Devine's naked school on parent-teacher visiting day.

by Anonymousreply 63May 15, 2022 6:27 PM

Aunt Clara from Bewitched. Dame Barbara Cartland.

Parker Posey

by Anonymousreply 65May 15, 2022 9:48 PM

Y’all know Aunti Mame would be a Trans.

by Anonymousreply 66May 15, 2022 9:53 PM

It would be a fun Broadway debut for Sharon Stone.

by Anonymousreply 67May 15, 2022 10:06 PM

Martha Stewart.

by Anonymousreply 68May 16, 2022 1:31 PM

Barbara Cartland was a lady! Not like us whores on DL.

by Anonymousreply 69May 16, 2022 2:12 PM

I'm for Beanie as Agnes Gooch!

by Anonymousreply 70May 16, 2022 2:29 PM

Tori Spelling!

by Anonymousreply 72May 16, 2022 2:45 PM

Sort of loving the Parker Posey suggestion. I doubt she'd sell as many tickets as they'd want, but she'd be really fun in the role.

by Anonymousreply 73May 16, 2022 11:34 PM

R67, funny but Sharon Stone would be very interesting in this role.

by Anonymousreply 74May 23, 2022 12:08 AM

Well, we know it won’t be Beanie.

by Anonymousreply 75May 23, 2022 12:10 AM

Dig me up, I'll do it since I won't have to sing.

by Anonymousreply 76May 23, 2022 12:20 AM

I'm still here!
