'Reading a Room'

Why is it instinct for gays and straights have no clue how to do it?

by Anonymousreply 32May 14, 2022 6:28 PM

Spoiler Alert: Most gays can’t do it. Don Rickles was the best, and I believe he was straight.

by Anonymousreply 1May 13, 2022 1:39 PM

It's called survival of the fittest.

by Anonymousreply 2May 13, 2022 1:40 PM

Because we're used to assessing the surroundings for any signs of danger?

by Anonymousreply 3May 13, 2022 1:41 PM

Because we're looking for fresh meat.

by Anonymousreply 4May 13, 2022 1:42 PM

Because we're too busy looking for Karen's who will say we are molesting their precious boy who winked at me.

by Anonymousreply 5May 13, 2022 1:43 PM

Maybe spend some time on your punctuation, r5.

Or learn some slang that’s less than 10 years old.

by Anonymousreply 6May 13, 2022 1:48 PM

R1 that’s not reading a room, dummy.

You must mean “reading” a room of individuals “for filth”.

Dons whole thing was offending people which is the opposite of reading a room.

The reason OP is for two reasons, one is that straight people don’t have to. Their lives don’t depend on it.

Secondly, homosexuals have a suite of instincts or at least more heightened instincts than straights. Who are just here to breed.

We homosexuals have a higher calling. And come equipped for our celestial purpose.

by Anonymousreply 7May 13, 2022 2:02 PM

What R3 said. Straights don't even have to think about what might happen to them, that's why Karens are all straight men and women. We have to be constantly on guard.

by Anonymousreply 8May 13, 2022 2:35 PM

Oh honey, I think you have to be of a certain age to be able to read a room. There are all sorts today who say whatever comes into their head and let the consequences be damned ~ even if it's them that suffers. You have to have common sense and interest in others to read a room. That quality seems to be somewhat lacking these days.

by Anonymousreply 9May 13, 2022 2:45 PM

I am not sure if it is a certain age, or just not being so self-centered.

by Anonymousreply 10May 13, 2022 2:47 PM

I think gays can do it instinctively even if they haven’t learned how to respond yet. And a lot of times the bafoon act is just that, an act. It’s part of reading the room. Playing that role disarms the straights.

(Early) Little Richard could read a room. Pee Wee Herman. Liberace. They could read a room and occupy that rare air between being a threat and a stooge.

by Anonymousreply 11May 13, 2022 2:57 PM

Oh, I thought the title meant a reading room at the library... oops, my bad.

by Anonymousreply 12May 13, 2022 2:58 PM

Yes, exactly. I remember at a very early age which behaviors produced certain results, good or bad. Reading a room, for me, has always been instinctive. Survival. Didn't know I was doing it, but looking back, I did. Funny, my partner has none of if. He seems to just wander through life, clueless about everything and bumping life's buzzers like a pin ball.

by Anonymousreply 13May 13, 2022 3:17 PM

Well, he was savvy enough to latch onto a partner who would handle the difficult stuff, r13. So maybe he’s not so clueless.

by Anonymousreply 14May 13, 2022 3:25 PM

I find that if I can locate the no host bar within 30 seconds I have a much easier time reading any room.

R7 And just what would that be? I didn't get the memo.

by Anonymousreply 17May 13, 2022 7:06 PM

Well I think that purposes is skewed arbitrary by our modern society. I think at different times in history and perhaps the future that we could “see” it more clearly.

But it’s a leadership role of some kind. Or more so a purposeful one if that makes sense. If even in a passive way. It’s something to do with cutting the current, stopping things from happening or facilitating them in some way.

A regulator if you will.

Hardly. My interfering grandmother is 86, and she hasn't a bit of tact or good instinct.

by Anonymousreply 19May 14, 2022 12:39 AM

Nah, just in general some people have it, others don't. If you have it AND you are "different" in some way, as a matter of survival, you might learn to be better at reading a room than most.

by Anonymousreply 20May 14, 2022 12:45 AM

Is your grandmother gay?

Ah yes r18. My spiritual teacher calls that World Work. It is meditation for the elevation of spiritual consciousness in the world. I love it cause I can do it anywhere!

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2022 11:04 AM

R22, that’s for everyone. Although I put no stock in what it says, the loon at R7/R18 is referring to gay and lesbian people specifically.

by Anonymousreply 23May 14, 2022 11:22 AM

Reading the room aka know your audience is about knowing what will get you brownie points (aka approval) and what will get you in trouble.

A lot of family gatherings end up in fights, because people deliberately act confrontational based on personal grievances, vendettas, and agendas.

A great deal of people no longer want to keep the peace, they want to bring the Reality TV drama, the shit stirring, and the fights to their home.

by Anonymousreply 24May 14, 2022 11:29 AM

Americans look better because of the part of the world we live in. Climate and environment has a lot to do with how you look as well. There's a reason you have those beautiful all American types. There's definitely something about being born and raised in America and living in this part of the world. And that doesn't just include white people. That includes all Americans of every ethnicity. There's just something about this part of the world and the environment, that ppl come out looking much more attractive than they do in England and the aging process is much kinder for the most part. There's actually been studies on this.

So it's definitely environment and this part of the world for sure. Being north American and the Climate here absolutely helps with how we Americans look.

R25 Fuck, this ended up in the wrong thread. I hate it when DL makes this mistake. This site can really be shit at times.

by Anonymousreply 26May 14, 2022 12:23 PM

R26 Thank you for explaining. I wondered how that fit into the subject.

by Anonymousreply 27May 14, 2022 12:28 PM

R25 For what it's worth. I agree.

by Anonymousreply 28May 14, 2022 12:28 PM

Hey R25 here again. For those of you wondering. My post is from the thread. " why do Brits age so badly." Just incase anyone wanted to check that thread out. It's active now.

Thx R27 and R28

by Anonymousreply 29May 14, 2022 12:36 PM

No THANKS!! I'm staying in *this* room, with all the Beautiful Americans...

by Anonymousreply 30May 14, 2022 3:11 PM

Another of these posts on something that is not fact- just opinion. Most people don’t care to “read” a room. If you’re a pol or a teacher it’s a good skill to have- but for most, unnecessary and there is no difference between straight and gay ability to sense the tenor of a group of people. Sheesh.

by Anonymousreply 31May 14, 2022 6:20 PM

It's a combination of learned behavior and instinct.

I've always been good at debate and a smartass. A few bitches have come for me over the years and profoundly regretted it.

But I also tend to keep the "bitch in the drawer" because no one likes that energy 24/7.
