Men who dont wear ties in business setting are trash.

by Anonymousreply 11May 16, 2022 3:57 AM

I misplaced my tie—

by Anonymousreply 12May 16, 2022 4:07 AM

I like ties. Women have fashion options in a business setting, where men are limited to blue/black/grey suits. We have ties and shirts to put in a little color. So I'm not losing my ties.

by Anonymousreply 13May 16, 2022 4:13 AM

I don’t think it’s trashy, but it’s just such a tired and played out look. I mean Tom Ford started this jacket with no tie look back in the NINETIES, that’s like 30 years ago. Enough is enough

by Anonymousreply 14May 16, 2022 4:22 AM

OP, how old are you?

I'm just curious, and not trying to make fun of you.

But seriously, you must be over 50 because most young guys today don't wear ties. Most of them can barely be bothered to wear a dress shirt.

Everything in today's world is about comfort.

And now with people working from home?

You're lucky if a guy even bothers to wear pants.

by Anonymousreply 18May 16, 2022 4:44 AM

Wrong, OP. Ties are pointless and I'm glad they're on the way out. Why should I tie an ornamental silk noose around my neck just because everyone else is doing it? Fuck that shit. People who do stuff for traditions sake are stupid.

by Anonymousreply 19May 16, 2022 6:19 AM

R14 Ok and a tie, which has been around for like 300 years is not a tired look?

by Anonymousreply 20May 16, 2022 6:28 AM

r14 has the dumbest comment. Tom Ford didn't invent the concept of not wearing a tie. What a crock of fucking shit.

by Anonymousreply 21May 16, 2022 6:32 AM

Ties and suits are oppressive to me. It could be my gayness and how I used to be forced to wear them as a kid. It’s like saying women should be expected to wear dresses.

by Anonymousreply 22May 16, 2022 6:41 AM

It is a test of character, dear R19. Obvi, you have zero problem announcing your faux pas ridden upbringing

by Anonymousreply 23May 20, 2022 3:58 AM

I hate ties, they're uncomfortable and old-timey. It's the 21st Century and ties are on the way out.

by Anonymousreply 24May 20, 2022 4:01 AM

For me it's not the tie, it's the generally sloppy look that is bothersome. Tuck your shirt is and shave your face. People don't understand why they don't command respect, but how one presents themself is important.

by Anonymousreply 25May 20, 2022 4:09 AM

R21: please read carefully what I wrote:

[quote] Tom Ford started this jacket with no tie look back in the NINETIES

No where did I say he ‘invent[ed] the concept of not wearing a tie.’

What I said was he started the trend, meaning he helped popularize this look in the 90s.

If you can’t tell the difference between ‘inventing’ and ‘starting a trend’, then there’s no way I can help you.

Please learn to read carefully before you accused anyone of stupidity. Otherwise it just reflects badly on you.

by Anonymousreply 26May 20, 2022 4:15 AM

It is true that Tom Ford helped make the no-tie look popular.

by Anonymousreply 27May 20, 2022 4:21 AM

R27: thank you. I’m old enough as I actually lived through the 90s and experienced first hand all the fashion foibles of the decade.

In many industries, someone under the age of 70 wearing a tie to a meeting would call attention to the wearer, which is the last thing you'd want to do--and not in a good way.

Tech, media, advertising--the uniform for any sort of conference or formal meeting is dark jeans or "five pocket pants" a collared shirt and a sport coat, which for many guys seems to be the jacket of the one suit they own.

Even weddings and b'nai mitzvot are much less formal these days

by Anonymousreply 69June 25, 2022 12:09 PM

A couple of days ago, I was on the subway (live in NYC) going to work and I noticed several of the young guys were wearing white shirts. Is a white shirt still the favored choice of investment banks and law offices?

by Anonymousreply 70June 25, 2022 12:38 PM

I have a couple of beautiful ties for special occasions, like weddings, galas, receptions…

And it‘s always such a relief to take the damn thing off!

So no, OP, some things go out of fashion for a very good reason.

And the shirt Bradley Cooper is wearing doesn’t require a tie because of its design. It doesn’t need a noose to “complete” the look, because this IS the look.

by Anonymousreply 71June 25, 2022 12:49 PM

R64 amazing how easy it is to fool you just by wearing a piece of cloth around the neck.

by Anonymousreply 72June 25, 2022 12:53 PM

I like wearing a tie and don't mind being one of a few or the only one in a room wearing one. I don't think it makes me a better person. I don't throw on a tie and pair of bluchers to run next door to the grocery store. And I don't care if other men wear a tie or not (there's a certain level of don't-give-a-fuck piss-stained sweat pants that might catch my eye as wrong but I'm not going to upbraid anyone or throw dagger eyes or speak badly about them because of their clothes.

by Anonymousreply 73June 25, 2022 1:02 PM

Once upon a time there was a beautiful high class princess.

She was driving in her carriage through Darkest Flyoverstan when she noticed an overweight older gentleman. His skin glowed like a nuclear reactor but that was not what the beautiful high class princess noticed.

No.. the elderly gent was wearing a tie. A proper Windsor-knotted tie.

She called to her driver to stop the car and had her Personal Assistant and Head Courtier summon the nattily-dressed gent

"You!," she demanded imperiously. "Do you have any large tattoos about your collarbone?"

"No, your highness. I do not," the man said, grabbing his suit jacket and curtsying, as he had been brought up by his grandmother to always be polite to his betters, royalty in particular.

"Do you drive about in expensive vehicles with your arm hanging out the window"

"No your highness!" the elderly gentleman exclaimed, clearly aghast at the thought.

"Quick," she said slyly. "Name a brand of bed linens!"

The man thought about the many, many, many threads he'd read on Datalounge about things that were High Class.

"Pratesi!" he gasped, as he was more certain of the correct pronunciation of "Pratesi" than he was of "Frette."

"Very good," the princess said.

Then she turned and addressed her EA.

"This man is clearly meant to be upper class. He was probably kidnapped by low class peasants at birth and raised in a split level house with deep pile carpet from Sears. While they did not respect the Rules of Proper Decorum, his good breeding won out and to this day, he still wears a tie when outside of the house. We must bring him back to the palace with us and restore him to his rightful place. He can assist the Royal Hairdressing Staff and ensure that all of our hairstyles remain Upper Class."

"As you wish, your highness," the EA sighed.

"THANK YOU JESUS!!!" the becaftaned gentleman shouted, before catching himself and offering a polite "Thank you. your highness. You beauty is only surpassed by your generosity."

"Much better," she noted. "Don' fret, dearest, it will take several months to shake all that bad breeding out of you.."

A tear ran down the elderly gentleman's cheek.

"At least he's not wearing flip flops!" the princess whispered to her gentlemen-in-waiting, who all tittered gaily.....

by Anonymousreply 94June 29, 2022 1:40 PM

I think it's partially an age thing and partially about the industry in which you do business. In my opinion, most men do actually look better in a bespoke suit with tie rather than being sloppy casual. I have friends who look amazing in anything they wear. Others, just look sloppy.

American tend to be more casual than Europeans. I'm in London next week for Wimbledon and some business meetings. Most of the clubs and restaurants we're visiting still require a coat and tie for dinner. Of course, I'm older, affluent and in the world of finance. If I were in my 30s hip, cool and lower on the totem pole, I'm sure I see things differently.

by Anonymousreply 95June 29, 2022 1:50 PM

OP , I agree with you.

I was thinking about ties the other day. I rewatched Breakfast at Tiffany's and was horrified at how they dressed George Peppard. His little ties were dreadful. A nice tie can accentuate a beautifully cut suit, but not so in this case.

by Anonymousreply 102June 29, 2022 2:55 PM

I like skinny ties (within reason, not two strands of ribbon), and dislike wide. clownish ties: slightly narrower than standard is preferable to slightly wider than standard (not a fan of clown-wide ties.)

Speaking of narrow, the bolo tie is neither a tie nor a good look.

I like bow ties, though clearly they fit some people well and others not. I wore them often, maybe 50-60% of the time I wore ties when I was a young in college. It worked well for me at the time, particularly in the realm of tweed jackets and elbow patches and the occasional smart suit. As I grew older, I gravitated more to conventional ties, but always with a white shirt and preferred some color or pattern a bit beyond the standard school tie look: Fendi and Valentino and Armani ties, bold, only but crazy bold. I mostly lost my taste for bow ties in time; maybe because I associate them (and think they look better on) younger and older men?

If a man makes something about his tie a signature look, good for him, whether it's narrowness or with, pattern, color, a big exploded magnolia blossom of a bow tie, I can't think of many cases where a man's taste in ties came to bother me. Fashion is in part about fitting in, in the way that manners are about smoothing over our differences and setting up niceties so that we can make bridges with people who are not exactly like ourselves — by putting everyone at ease. The guy who always has soup on his tie, or who never wears a tie is often enough a friend of mine. I don't wear a tie to make him feel ill at ease no more than I would call him out for dressing how he wants to dress.

I wear a tie many times because I like how I feel wearing it, not to place me in some inner circle looking out and calling out the relative shortcomings of others. I live in a place where some people dress very elegantly, some according to traditions (sometimes funny or peculiar) of posh classes, sometimes very casually, and sometimes artfully or fashion-forward in very personal ways. What a great mix it makes at a reception or some event, and how much more interesting than if everyone work the regulation suit and tie -- and tie of a regulation width and stripe and knot. I'm not a clothes horse but I try to wear clothes that fit what I am doing and that make me feel good in them; it's not to draw a line in the sand of "there lies trash."

R99 - Wasn't his character supposed to be... uhm... fashion-saavy?

by Anonymousreply 104June 29, 2022 11:21 PM

And best in mind the film came out in 1961, the look was really quite avant garde: slim-cut suits, skinny ties, flat front trousers, it’s basically a forerunner what the Millennials [the hipper ones anyways] have been wearing for the past decade and so, courtesy of ‘Mad Men’ and Thom Browne et al
