Top Gun Maverick receives rave reviews

Will it still flop as expected?

Detractors give it mixed reviews at worst

by Anonymousreply 1May 12, 2022 1:37 PM

I worked with an actor who was on it, and he told us horror stories of how it's common to barf all the time while filming in the planes. Poor editor that has to look at all that footage.

by Anonymousreply 2May 12, 2022 2:50 PM

Dont they have oxygen masks on their faces? They puke into the masks?

by Anonymousreply 3May 12, 2022 2:55 PM

I hate the $cientology midget and would not support him or his crazy church with any of my hard earned $$$, so I hope it flops - badly.

I just read they're also working on a Dirty Dancing sequel with Jennifer Grey producing and reprising her role as Baby. They're even in negotiations with Swayze's estate to add his character digitally in some capacity. These motherfuckers just need to stay away from our GenX childhood movies. We don't need any trashy sequels or remakes.

r3, he said that they would pluck the mask off and barf in a bag next to them. Can you imagine smelling your own barf for the whole day?

by Anonymousreply 6May 13, 2022 2:57 PM

I saw a trailer of the new Top Gun movie in the theater just the other day - it was so long that it seemed as though they showed one quarter of the movie. Endless scenes of planes flying around and zzzzzzzzz.........terribly boring. I WON'T be seeing it!

by Anonymousreply 20May 14, 2022 12:48 AM

I saw the trailer and one of the younger guys referred to the Tom Cruise character as "Old Man." I wonder why Tammy let that one slip by when he is associated with Peter Pan youth??!!

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2022 3:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 23May 14, 2022 3:14 AM

Exactly r23, and that is such a corporate, 1980's mentality. It is vulgar by today's work-at-home lifestyle of those under 50. Plus he is an aging white male who looks like a Republican Congressman.

I hope it flops.

by Anonymousreply 24May 14, 2022 3:23 AM

Critics are, on the whole, historically very kind to Tom Cruise (critics always love the pinnacle of generational stars with mega-watt charisma - Hanks, Pitt, Washington, Roberts, Bullock) but the raves Top Gun Maverick is receiving shows how desperate they are for a great popcorn film that isn’t from the Marvel factory.

by Anonymousreply 25May 14, 2022 6:09 AM

The last Tom Cruise movie I went to see was The Firm. Even before I became aware of the truth about Scientology as an actor he was just annoying with his perpetual open mouth showing off his piano key mono-teeth.

by Anonymousreply 26May 14, 2022 6:22 AM

There were a lot of questions why Kelly McGillis wasn’t asked to return to play a role in TopGun 2.

It will not flop. I remember all the fanfare in 2019 when the original trailer was release. I’m now hearing people excitedly talk about their plans to go see it 3 years later.

I can’t stand Cruise or Teller, but I loooooooove Glenn Powell and Jennifer Connelly. They’ll be enough to get my $$$$

by Anonymousreply 28May 15, 2022 2:22 PM

R20 Rick Rossovich was beautiful and was and is very nice. He’s 64. Rick’s older but not as handsome (but just as hunky) brother Tim—former Philadelphia Eagle then 70s/80s TV actor died in 2018.

by Anonymousreply 30May 15, 2022 4:09 PM

It will have similar box office to Mission Impossible Fallout which had a 97 RT score but did only $220 domestically (eighth highest that year). That one also benefited by being a two hander with Henry Cavill, where this one has only Cruise’s star. This one is marketed basically as “Tom Cruise and some toned young people.”

Val Kilmer's voice is fucked by cancer so they used A.I. tech in the movie. they took his speeches from all his work and generated voice for dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 47May 18, 2022 1:06 AM

Friend of mine edited a behind the scenes of the last Mission Impossible film. She said it totally changed her mind about Cruise. She thought he was an entitled asshole before she viewed the footage and she said he was actually one of the nicest actors she's ever seen. He would randomly introduce himself to crew members, sticking out his hand and saying, "Hi, I'm Tom. What's your name?" Said he went out of his way to be kind to everyone. I have to say, the original was on TV the other night and I was totally sucked into it so I'll likely go see it. I think it's going to be a huge success.

He looks weird now. Like later-life Cliff Richard; that beaming smile, scarecrow/animated corpse in a wig look.

by Anonymousreply 52May 18, 2022 5:59 AM

Tom looks his age and looks good, he has crows feet and is (finally) allowing a few strands of grey hair around his face. We have seen him go all on on fillers and Botox and he lets them settle for a few months so he looks natural when it’s time for premieres and Graham Norton. But he doesn’t look like an older version of young Tom Cruise. I’m thinking a chin implant and a brow lift?

by Anonymousreply 53May 18, 2022 8:22 AM

R33. The queen is head of state of some former colonies because those countries have asked her to. If they don’t want a white head of state, they just need to get their act together and make that happen. But in many cases they haven’t. These countries really need to decide what they want and stop hitching about having a white head of state. Despite what you imply, there’s no evidence the Queen is anguished about being removed as head of state of these countries. The Queen has given away more imperial holdings than anyone in history. And she never bitched about it or was rude about it. Perhaps Jamaica etc. Could follow her example.

by Anonymousreply 54May 18, 2022 9:28 AM

[quote] Despite what you imply, there’s no evidence the Queen is anguished about being removed as head of state of these countries

Her reason for existence is to rule and the sunny Caribbean saying toodle-pip is a slap in the face. In 2018 She pretty much forced the Commonwealth Heads of Government to commit to the Commonwealth into Charles’ reign. And Australians are increasingly annoyed being forced to host the Commonwealth Games so often because few others can else can afford to.

And now she’s literally offering up her body to Xenu and his child-abandoning earthly representative. Actually, that makes sense. From one absent parent to an another…

by Anonymousreply 56May 18, 2022 12:10 PM

What r23 said.

My respect for Cruise as an entertainer began with "Risky Business".

Except "Vanilla Sky" (awful), I ignored his movies.

Watching "Cocktail" I know, would embarrass me. I've never watched "Top Gun".

But, I can't deny it. "Mission Impossible: Fallout" was amazing. I saw it on a cinema mega-screen. Corny as it is, I walked out of the theatre with enormous respect for TC because he works his ass off to deliver an entertaining product.

by Anonymousreply 57May 18, 2022 12:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 58May 18, 2022 12:30 PM

Jennifer Connolly was so smug about getting this role. When she announced it on Graham Norton years ago she was the cat who got the cream. I did not get it. Honey, it’s Top Gun. Maybe she’s jealous of Paul Bettany getting that Disney money and is keen for a franchise of her own.

She and Miles Teller were both in Joseph Kosinski’s firefighter movie. Teller there played a character who was in real life a very conventionally handsome blond man. I can see why Glenn Powell didn’t get this part, he’s too slick and confident, and would be better as the son of Iceman.

The younger generation that buys tickets to Marvel movies has no relationship to TOP GUN. It's iconic so they might be familiar with it but few have seen it. Older male moviegoers aren't yet back in theaters unless its taking their kids to the movies. This should do well in flyover country though.

Tom has good reputation for being very kind to his castmates and the crew. He seems severely neurotic and uses religion as a crutch. Before Scientology, he was a diehard Catholic. I think he has sex but probably can't maintain a relationship. The Mimi, Nicole and Katie periods all seemed calculated for his career. From the homophobia of Catholicism to the homophobia of Scientology. He'll probably never be out.

It's amazing to me that even now in 2022, people simply do not care that he is the public face of a evil organization and a dead beat father! As long as little ole them are "entertained"by a movie star's movie for 2 hours! Doesn't ANYONE or a large number of the population have any integrity, character, decency, honor or empathy for others? Even if people have not done the homework on scientology, surely surely by now they know at the very least when the word scientology is brought up that it's weird, a cult, strange, and other negative adjectives!

but yet, that's as far as they go.. they don't know, don't want to know, don't care to know, even if someone tells them the truth, it doesn't sink in!

NEVER EVER EVER EVER underestimate the power of celebrity, celebrity worship and self absorption...

I was THEE biggest tom cruise fan ever back in the day! But once I found out about scientology AND him being a dead beat father to suri, how in the world could i support a man who is involved in this? who thinks along with his "religion" that i'm a 'degraded being" and a "wog"... 2 extremely derogatory terms! He and his cult laughing at me, insulting me AND wants to take my money? NO WAY, NO HOW!...

How do I or anyone support a man whose so morally bankrupt and corrupt that he makes the leader of his "religion his best friend, which is OBVIOUSLY improper and inappropriate, whose wife was presumably was cruise's friend as well, has not been seen in public for over 12 years and counting! and cruise thinks of this how????? How do I or anyone support a man who thinks getting his ass ROYALLY BUTT KISSED 24/7 for over 3 decades by his "religion" (any religion/church/faith) no matter who he thinks he is is normal, okay, proper and even deserved?!.. '

A man who actually bans anyone, anywhere, anytime from even ASKING questions that should have been asked and answers DEMANDED literally years and years ago! A man who hasn't and won't sit for a REAL interview in well over 10 years and who only shows up on late night talk shows to get his ass sickening kissed by the hosts who are enablers and cowards ("he won't show up if we ask him anything personal! he'll get mad! these appearances aren't the right place or time to ask him these questions! it's none of my business, it's his personal life! but, but, he's so nice to little ole me!")...

by Anonymousreply 109May 19, 2022 12:24 PM

How's Suri? Is anyone going to ask him about her?

Just curious.

It was downright thoughtful and kind to fit Val Kilmer in the film. He was gorgeous in the first "Top Gun." I vaguely recall my (late) mother finding Val Kilmer just as handsome as handsome could be back then. She was educated at a convent and she was soo sweet about Val Kilmer because she would be like "He's as handsome as Tab Hunter I tell you." I miss her.

This whole thing beats another comic book movie. I get a kick out of how my young Godsons find the comic book movies cool because they're innocent elementary school aged children but I'm sick of the comic book movies deep down.

I know people say, well if you found out what every famous or well known person was involved in or do then you would probably never see another movie, tv show, sports game, artwork ever again! Which to me is a lazy cop-out! WHEN you/do find out what a famous person is involved in then you act accordingly! When you don't know, you don't know, but when you do find out, you act accordingly!...

by Anonymousreply 115May 19, 2022 12:39 PM

Question: shouldn't Lady Gaga be utterly ashamed of herself having a song for this movie, when she doesn't know what cruise's cult thinks of the LGBQT community and since she is supposed to be a champion for us/them??!! Oh wait, I forgot even now in 2022, Lady Gaga is utterly clueless of scientology and their beliefs! UH HUH!

DAMN DOESN'T ANYONE IN HOLLYWOOD HAVE ANY INTEGRITY?????!!!...

Xenu should bless us with a Tom Cruise sex tape from the 80s leaking. Maybe that's what Scientology is blackmailing him with. Tom's photos ended up in a gay magazines in the 80s back when he was an angelic twink.

by Anonymousreply 122May 19, 2022 5:57 PM

R121.. you have no idea what you are talking about! cruise is the public face of a evil abusive cult that has abused in every definition of the word abuse countless people, from current members to ex-members even critics... AND HE KNOWS what is going on! By his silence he is way way WAAAAAAAAAAY worse than anything alec baldwin, a bill cosby, a harvey weinstein, you name it has done... how many people did they hurt? a handful?

CRUISE IS GUILTY AS SIN FOR KNOWING AND ALLOWING AND KEEPING QUIET THE THOUSANDS HIS CULT HAS HURT! HE IS COMPLICIT! THE PHRASE "AS IF HE PULLED THE TRIGGER HIMSELF" IS BEYOND APT HERE!....

YOU'RE upset that alec baldwin called some photographer faggot? cruise's cult thinks ALL gay people should be wiped off the planet without remorse or thought according to the doctrine by l. ron hubbard!..

I wonder if Tom tapped Cavill's ass. Being old enough to be Cavill's father wouldn't have stopped him.

by Anonymousreply 126May 20, 2022 1:28 AM

Please! I'm pretty sure Cavill had Cruise lined up and beckoned into that gritty hole of his like one of those Carrier Deck marshalers guiding an F-14 to the launching blocks

by Anonymousreply 127May 20, 2022 1:35 AM

Watching that MI movie you'd think Cruise and Cavill were going to fuck any minute.

by Anonymousreply 128May 20, 2022 1:38 AM

I am surprised that cruise had cavill play opposite him! i mean you have someone taller, younger, way better built, handsomer and so on....

you would think cruise whose the ultimate control freak would not have had cavill or anyone like him anywhere step a foot on any of his film sets...

likewise, i'm surprised cruise hired that one actor (forget his name) who plays the new hotshot in top gun: maverick, whose also younger, taller, better built and handsomer and who even does the remake of the infamous shirtless volleyball scene.. allegedly, cruise himself shows up in that scene as well? does he think at 60 his body can match up with guys young enough to be his son? sure he might look better than most 60 year olds, but he's utterly delusional if he thinks he matches up with these other guys!...

who knows maybe tom cruise does the "cough cough" tyler perry casting mindset!...

You guys all know the church is providing him a willing female Sea Org member for sex and companionship. Someone good looking and submissive without the trouble of dating and public humiliation when the "relationship" fails. He doesn't want an equal partner. That was very clear when we found out Tom threw a hissy fit bc Spielberg's wife took Katie out for lunch and did not get his approval first.

by Anonymousreply 132May 20, 2022 12:28 PM

Tom was controlling of Katie because most DL men are like that. It's not a lavender thing like Will and Jada or using paid escorts like Leo. Katie could have blackmailed him if she was that petty. She got the money and kept her kid. Wasn't it rumored that Tom wasn't even the father anyway.

Someone who actually looks like he could be the biological son of Meg Ryan and Timothy Edwards r149.

It's like Indiana Jones 4 when we were supposed to believe that Harrison Ford and Karen Allen, two very attractive people in their prime, could've produced the rat-faced nebbish Shia LaBeouf. Totally unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 150May 23, 2022 11:17 PM

I suggested in the other thread some like Nick Robinson, but I think he’s too young. He is more conventionally attractive than Teller. Then again we’re talking about offspring of Anthony Edward’s, so....

by Anonymousreply 151May 23, 2022 11:25 PM

Anthony Edwards was quite handsome as a young man.

by Anonymousreply 152May 23, 2022 11:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 163May 24, 2022 8:25 PM

I just checked and the two Cinemark XD theaters showing it tonight at 7 are both sold out. I was shocked but I also live in a Navy town.

by Anonymousreply 164May 24, 2022 9:41 PM

I live in the midwest and the showings are sold out tonight. I know it is the type of movie better shown on the big screen but still surprised it is doing so well. Oh well, I guess it's better than another superhero flick. Cruise is a nutty $cieno but I won't dispute his work ethic.

by Anonymousreply 165May 24, 2022 9:55 PM

It’s not shocking. Despite what DL always pushes, Gen Z are not the only ones who fuel entertainment consumption. This movie will resonate with GenX, millennials and boomers. Would Top Gun be the same blockbuster if it first came out today? Probably not, but it ties into a bygone era of theater seen hit movies with big stars. I think people want a real throwback type of movie to go see. So I’m not surprised that it’s a hit.

It’s still hilarious how the original is long forgotten or not even known about and out of nowhere this sequel comes along and critics are raving. Bizarre. The original hasn’t been played on television in god knows how long. Good for the studio though. I have no interest in seeing this thing.

I *hate* Cruise for his $cientology crap. I've never been a real fan but as an 80s teen I grew up with his movies. However when the worst things about his cult life started coming out I started boycotting his films and that lasted for a few years. Then at some point I accidentally started watching one of his latest Mission Impossible movie on TV and found it extremely well-made and fascinating.

After that I stopped boycotting him and even saw his latest M:I film in a theater. I sort of hate myself for it since I know he's using the money he earns to do things I don't approve. That said I've come to the conclusion that if you're stupid enough to go into a cult you can very much blame yourself. I'm not saying I don't feel for those guys but there's just so much information about Scientology these days that you should know what you're getting into.

I'm sure if it turns out Cruise has done some extremely heinous things in the cult I'll reconsider my position but at the moment I've chosen to ignore his cult life. He's been very wise to be totally silent about it for a long time. That's one of the reasons Maverick will have the biggest opening weekend of his career.

by Anonymousreply 197May 28, 2022 2:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 199May 28, 2022 3:03 AM

The way the entire industry and majority of critics are falling at Cruise's and the movie's feet right now, and with major box office predicted (from real movie theater sales), a Best Picture nomination isn't out of the question at all.

by Anonymousreply 200May 28, 2022 3:05 AM

I find Cruise a little creepy off-screen but he still makes great popcorn blockbuster films that are modern. The last Mission Impossible film was excellent - intense, suspenseful, with great stuntwork, and good storytelling.

The only disappointing thing is that Cruise used to alternate his blockbusters with more serious fare (Magnolia, Born on the Fourth of July) but he seems to only focus on action films nowadays.

R197.. thoughtful post, at least more than most people post on this topic thread.. However, what about the people TRAPPED in scientology currently? What about the literal stalking and harassing of critics who were never in scientology?

You suggest more or less that until you find out cruise has done some heinous stuff? He has already! By being the best friend of the sociopath leader, by willingly turning a blind eye to everything else and everyone else's treatment because hey, it's great for him as they kiss his ass 24/7 for over 3 decades, just this is heinous activity!...

He is beyond complicit! The phrase " as if he pulled the trigger himself" is beyond apt for him! He second hand has abused thousands of culties.... And then there is the whole missing wife of the leader not seen in public for over 12 years and counting! Presumably, Cruise was friends with her too! So what does THAT say about Cruise, who thinks not seeing the wife of his best friend and presumably his friend as well for all these years and he thinks nothing is going on? everything is normal? come on!..

OH yeah, don't forget abandoning Suri for over 8 years (besides the court ordered child support) because of his "religion" disconnection policy! What's even worse about this little truth? Cruise as the public face of it, like other celebs in it, but nowhere near his level, CAN break the rules if he wanted to, he COULD see Suri if he wanted to! Instead? He willingly chooses not to see her because getting the approval of his "religion" and another man, the leader his best friend is MORE important to prove just how dedicated a scientologist he is!

He's a morally and ethically bankrupt person and ultimate phony...You or anyone want to support and give your money to someone like this, who also thinks of you as a "degraded being" and a "silly wog" 2 extremely derogatory terms!...

by Anonymousreply 221May 28, 2022 2:00 PM

R206 not only is this pure entertainment that succeeds, it has amazing special effect that put you right in the experience. It has very high poduction standards, it has a cast that woks well together, and it has a story. It isn't all explosions. I'm a queeny old fag and I loved the dog fight sequences. They were thrilling. There were moments when, yes it was pedictable, but you were still holding your breath. So I see this definitely in the top three of Oscar nominations and barring anything new on the horizon, it will win. Everyone is talking about it even the haters. Now I think Cruise is an oddball with the Scientology crap. But he makes entertaining movies. Really entertaining movies. Go look at his filmogaphy. It's a long list and it is entetaining. IMO Marvel just likes special effects. Exception for Black Panther which had a good story, they don't usually have much story. This has several good story lines. There's the tension between Cruise and his superiors. There's the tension between him and the pilots. There is the history, and Val Kilmer brought a tear to my eye.

by Anonymousreply 222May 28, 2022 2:03 PM

Right at the moment, on the long list of Evils in this world, while Scientology is definitely on that list, it is way down the list. There is so much terrible shit going on right now at the moment, Scientology is the least of our worries.

by Anonymousreply 223May 28, 2022 2:05 PM

Anyone think that cruise never does drama anymore because no director or producer wants to work with him anymore and he doesn't do romantic comedy anymore because of the same thing and they know that a large number of the population thinks he's a weirdo and unconvincing?..

by Anonymousreply 224May 28, 2022 2:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 225May 28, 2022 2:09 PM

R223... yes, of course, much worse in the world is going on besides this little evil organization. HOWEVER, is there anyone like a movie star whose the public face of such organizations who wants our support and our money? And laughing at and insulting us too?!....

If he was a politician, another career that only exists because of public favor, his career would have been over years and years ago, simply for his involvement, more than involvement in such a organization and his absolute refusal to even allow questions to be asked of it and him....But yet, because he's only a actor and scientology is a small blimp of evil in this world, he gets a free pass??..

I don’t think there was a dry eye on the theater during Val Kilmer scenes. The action scenes were amazing- jets, boats, motorcycles! I thought it could have used some more music, and while I though Tom looked great for his age, his chestnut brown hair was distracting.

by Anonymousreply 227May 28, 2022 2:12 PM

There should be an award for homos trying their hardest to play heterosexual men. Cruise and Travolta would win every time.

by Anonymousreply 228May 28, 2022 2:19 PM

R220, look at Mel Gibson, who in my opinion has done far worse, yet still gets cast in movies and is still generally liked by the public. Most people, especially men, don’t care about an actor’s off screen activities. TC was smart laying low after the KH thing, that’s when he was really getting a side eye from the general public. So people forgot all the weirdness surrounding that.

As far as I know, most people can walk away from Scientology if they choose. I know about cutting off suppressive people, but in the end, these people who joined, did so freely.

by Anonymousreply 229May 28, 2022 2:59 PM

R229, Mimi Rogers, TC's first wife introduced him to Scientology. Her father was deep into it and she was raised in it. There is talk that Tom was chosen for her because of his personality and he was just stating out back then. The marriage lasted less than 3 years and she is vague saying "It just didn't work out." Now Tom to all reports is kind of an OCD type and when he embaces something it is all 110 %. He wanted to be a priest at one time when he was a teenager. So in a way he was ripe for picking. But to your point, Mimi Rogers left Scientology years ago. And seems to have faced no repecussions. She has never spoken out against it, but she has said it gave her tools gowing up that she found helpful. IMO, Scientology, like the Catholic Chuch, has factions and zealots and people who are less involved than others. Not sure. I think they are evil but then I think the Catholic Chuch, with few exceptions is also evil. So are the Momons.

by Anonymousreply 230May 28, 2022 3:41 PM

Scientology literally enslaves and imprisons minions. There are several assigned to Tom and I am sure he treats them like crap if he is displeased. He and Travolta also have the status to decide if a minion should be killed. It’s a fucked up cult.

by Anonymousreply 231May 28, 2022 3:54 PM

Those review$ were probably paid by Cruise himself.

by Anonymousreply 232May 28, 2022 5:11 PM

Apparently TC will have the two biggest summer movies, this Top Gun and a Mission Impossible.

by Anonymousreply 233May 28, 2022 6:44 PM

Is this a one off sequel or will they continue since this will make a fortune?

The guys in the original seem hotter than in this one.

by Anonymousreply 234May 28, 2022 6:58 PM

R229... what has mel gibson done that even approaches what cruise has done and involved in? please explain....

I would also suggest you do a bit more homework on scientology 1) SOME people can leave but only if they stay quiet otherwise? big trouble 2) Some people can leave quietly but are given a HUGE bill for services not paid for 3) Many cannot leave for various reasons 4) And then there is the disconnection factor, that if you leave and your own family or husband or wife is in it and does not leave it with you, they will disconnect from you forever and that is why many stay in...

R230.. cruise joined scientology in 1987 when he was now the biggest star in hollywood, so he was NOT just starting out...Rogers left it years ago, when her father who ran a "org" was treated horribly by the cult because he wanted to go "independent"... She has never spoken out against it, because even now all these years later, she is afraid of the repercussions this cult would do to her....THe same reason why nicole kidman has never spoken out! She also hopes that someday her grown adopted children will wake up and leave it and have a real relationship with her, so until then she purposely does not speak out against it, because if she does now, she knows she has lost those kids forever...

please do not deal in "whataboutism" with other religions.. we are talking about cruise, the ONLY FAMOUS person I know of who has been utterly wrong butt kissed by a "religion, his "religion" 24/7 for over 3 decades, is buddy buddy with the perpetrator of all this evil, turns a blind eye to it all and yet, wants our money and support for his life and career! AND who secretly in private degrades all of us who at not in his cult by calling us evil terms like "degraded beings" and "silly wogs"!..

by Anonymousreply 235May 28, 2022 7:17 PM

60 years old and the biggest opening of his career -- even in the face of a pandemic that is still keeping some moviegoers from theaters.

That is an amazing feat some 40 years after his first movie.

His connection to Scientology makes him an awful person, but he's a true movie star nonetheless.

by Anonymousreply 236May 28, 2022 7:20 PM

They are showing all TC movies on FX right now

by Anonymousreply 237May 28, 2022 7:38 PM

R235, you’re seriously asking that? Mel Gibson is a drunk driving, anti-Semitic, Holocaust denying, racist, homophobic, domestic abuser. All of that makes him 100x worse than Tom Cruise. Scientology is a cult, but if people are dumb enough to join, that’s on them.

R236, I was actually surprised with all his hits that this would be his biggest opening. Especially when theater movies are on the decline. Hate him if you will, but there is no denying he really has had an legendary Hollywood career.

by Anonymousreply 238May 28, 2022 7:45 PM

Where do TC movies intesect with Scientology? It's where he earns millions and donates them to Scientology. He is a major benefactor of the Church.

by Anonymousreply 239May 28, 2022 7:45 PM

I loathe Miles Teller - I'm not entirely sure even why, other than his name is "Miles" and in interviews he comes across as completely insufferable. Between Miles & Tommy, the smug factor has to just be off the charts.

by Anonymousreply 240May 28, 2022 7:49 PM

R238.. really? so mel gibson is a piece of shit, racist, drunk driving, holocaust denier.. yeah, he's a piece of crap human being, but HOW MANY has his thinking and/or actions hurt? cruise knowingly and willingly is a accomplice to thousands being abused in a cult!.... DO you not get this?....

cruise is a public phony the opposite of his real private persona, (that 3 wives and a daughter called Suri can all attest to!)... Once again, what's worse, a public piece of shit or a public phony?..

by Anonymousreply 241May 28, 2022 11:35 PM

R240- I feel exactly the same way about those two, but the smugness works in this movie. It plays as confident/cocky, which a fighter pilot should be.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ starring Tom Cruise tops the domestic box office

“Top Gun: Maverick” came out with guns blazing at the domestic box office on Friday.

The sequel, starring Tom Cruise reprising his 1986 role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm, raked in $51,800,000, according to the IMDB’s Box Office Mojo database.

“The Bob’s Burgers Movie,” which was released on Friday, trailed in second place, earning $5,700,000. The musical comedy flick, based on the animated series, had its release date delayed for almost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Where are all those haters saying that Top Gun Maverick was going to flop??

Where are you?

by Anonymousreply 244May 29, 2022 2:20 AM

R220, yes, Cruise is an asshole, a narcissistic cunt with a Christ complex. However Hollywood is filled with narcissistic cunts. If you start boycotting every nasty actor or director or producer you end up boycotting the whole entertainment industry.

And yes, I do dislike Scientology but quite frankly at the moment when Russians are raping kids as young as 2 in Ukraine I just really don't give a shit about cult members who went in willingly. A few years ago I watched multiple documentaries about Scientology and I'm fully aware it's a terrible organization created to give money and power to the chosen few. I still can't watch Handmaid's Tale because Elizabeth Moss playing a victim of a Scientology-like religion is just too much.

So why do I watch Cruise's films? First and foremost because they're superbly made and because he's good at what he does. Apparently Cruise has learned his lesson and won't proselytize on movie sets anymore. Everyone seems to say he's a total professional on the set and treats everyone respectfully. The reality is that I see him as a kind of a simpleton who's really a victim himself as well. Miscaviage seems to be the real devil pulling his strings. And I do still kinda believe the old gay rumors about him which makes me view him slightly more favorably.

I grew I up in a small town with a sizeable portion of the populace belonging to a Christian cult-like revivalist movement. I still work side by side with some of them but I've long since stopped questioning why they want to live like that. They pretty much have their own society within the society and their own rules to follow. Apparently most people are happy enough to stay although they've made leaving difficult as well since those who leave are supposed to become outcasts their families can't be in contact with anymore.

But what can I say. Like Eurythmics said: Some of them want to use you, some of them want to be used by you. It's a cruel world. I know I'm a hypocrite for not condemning Cruise any more but quite frankly there's so many people to hate on this planet that I give him a pass for now.

by Anonymousreply 245May 29, 2022 4:29 AM

R60, Israeli-born neighbors in their 60's took their 100-year-old mother to see it as soon as it first came out. They raved about it and TC. They love spectacles.

by Anonymousreply 246May 29, 2022 4:39 AM

Tom Cruise has consistently delivered entertaining films his entire career and has always been top box office. He looks great for 59. He is quiet about his personal life and religious/political views, any press about those things would be driven by others . I congratulate him on his great success.

by Anonymousreply 247May 29, 2022 8:38 AM

He looks terrific

by Anonymousreply 248May 29, 2022 8:44 AM

Why do people think Scientology is any loopier, crazier or more dangerous than Christianity? Are you completely unaware of what's going on in your country?

by Anonymousreply 249May 29, 2022 10:39 AM

R245.. and name me ANY hollywood major star whose the public face of a evil organization? You are basically ignoring this and delving into "whataboutism"..

R247.. so in your mind, if he was the public face of the KKK, Westboro Baptist or White supremacy as long as he keeps it all private and quiet you're good with this???

R249... You can't compare christianity to scientology for various reasons. And we are talking about a person whose entire fame, wealth and success is based on US the public, and who is THEE public face of a evil organization but yet wants our favor....

by Anonymousreply 250May 29, 2022 12:47 PM

R86, Are you serious? A "cloaca?" WTF?

by Anonymousreply 251May 29, 2022 1:56 PM

Some years ago, I was at a film festival. We hung out around the hotel where the press conferences took place for the big movies, to see if we could see celebities. I sort of struck up a conversation with a photogapher (a paparazzi) while we were waiting and I asked him if TC was Gay, because there were these rumors. And the guy gave me a shrug and a cynical smile and said, "Look. the truth is I don't know. Now with a lot of them we know. But with him I honestly don't know. I will say this: He's always impeccably dressed. And that may be why...I mean never a hair out of place on that one."

by Anonymousreply 252May 29, 2022 2:12 PM

250 he isn’t public face of KKk or Westboro so not to disturbed . He doesn’t drain us with any tiresome politics or views he may privately agree with .

He also doesn’t think he is entitled to an Academy Award , unlike many who have made a minuscule fraction of the great movies /box office he has.

by Anonymousreply 253May 29, 2022 2:30 PM

R253.. it's called a analogy! By the way in some circumstances scientology is WORSE than the KKK or Westboro baptist..

Also, since I presume you are gay or bisexual, do you have ANY idea what he and his cult think of you???...

by Anonymousreply 254May 29, 2022 2:34 PM

254 I don’t looked sleep over it

by Anonymousreply 255May 29, 2022 2:57 PM

I liked Tim Rossovich in Roxanne...haven't seen that in ages.

by Anonymousreply 256May 29, 2022 2:58 PM

I'm really not that interested in seeing old men in all these action movies. I did watch the last Mission Impossible and I likely will watch the next but he's getting to old for this kind of movie. Leave it to the younger stars and get some dramatic roles again.

by Anonymousreply 257May 29, 2022 3:03 PM

The movie is a big hit, as well as a critical success.

Tom Cruise looks very good in appearances, as well as on screen.

None of this should be controversial, no matter how awful Scientology is.

by Anonymousreply 258May 29, 2022 3:11 PM

I think there is a disgruntled ex-Scientologist roaming these threads/boards. I’m with R254, I couldn’t care less. There are more important things going on in this world to care about than a bunch of rich people who voluntarily join a cult.

R259.. You are referring to me. Sorry, If i'm passionate about this, because I've done the homework on scientology and cruise. And yes, they're worse people and things going on in this world, that does not however negate the fact that this man whose entire career is based on us the public should be getting away with what he does AND taking our money too!

Oh and only rich people join scientology??? That in itself is simply untrue and false...

R254... good to know (sarcasm) that you are willingly and supporting with your wallet, a man whose cult thinks that YOU should be wiped off the face of the planet without remorse and you are a "degraded being".... but hey, as long as you are entertained by him for 2 hours who cares about this huh? self respect and integrity??

by Anonymousreply 261May 29, 2022 7:25 PM

R260. He IS much older than when he made the first Top Gun! That doesn't mean he doesn't look very good for his age and even generally.

People here can be so childish. Tom Cruise is a Scientologist and Scientology is problematic. Doesn't mean he looks bad.

by Anonymousreply 262May 29, 2022 7:42 PM

He looks older than he did just three years ago. He looks weird. He doesn't look great.

by Anonymousreply 263May 29, 2022 8:07 PM

R266 This is arguably true, at least in a box office sense. If this is his last hurrah, -and unclear that it is- he will have had hits in starring roles over a 39 year period! Very few others can say that.

by Anonymousreply 272May 29, 2022 10:19 PM

The Chris Klein thing is so stupid. They were long since broken up and she was dating Josh Hartnett right before the whole Cruise thing. She’s either Cruise’s kid or Tommy Davis. R269, he never used to, but after the Katie Holmes backlash, he wisely did. The most important thing in his life is his career.

by Anonymousreply 273May 29, 2022 10:22 PM

OP who expected it to flop? The holiday weekend isn't over yet and it's grossed $150M!

by Anonymousreply 274May 29, 2022 10:22 PM

It's crazy what he has coming up too. Top Gun now, then Mission Impossible next year, followed by another Mission Impossible the year after, then that film that's going to be partially shot in orbit which will probably do well due to novelty even if it sucks.

I saw the movie last week. Don’t waste your time, although many will go anyways.

It was about only about Maverick. Anyone who says it had other characters in it deeper than superficial is lying. The movie was over-edited, as it sat there for how many years? Three? Four?

You don’t need to watch the first movie beforehand. History has a way of repeating itself in this one.

They didn’t need to get live action footage of the other actors for this. There was so little seen and heard from them. It could’ve been done with a blue screen.

As for setting a box office record: Whoopdee-doo. It cost me $7 to see the first movie. It was $25 for the second one, with no real incentive other than curiosity. It wasn’t the lame ass recliner chairs, and not the regular screen it was shown on. And people still yack away when the movies on. At least the movie cranked it up eventually.

And cover your eyes and carry on, as I’ve got one more gripe in the ‘storyline’: “spoiler”

A 60 year old man jumps out a bedroom window so a preteen doesn’t know he was there. It was so incredibly fucking stupid. You could NOT suspend the reality of his age with this scene. I wanted to throw stuff at the screen and hurl profanities. There was polite tittering as the scene unfolded, as no one else bought into it either. Would 60 y/o Tom Skerritt have jumped out a window in the original? Nooo.

by Anonymousreply 278May 30, 2022 7:55 AM

So, your saying H'wood is fake and its green screen movies are "unbelievable". Shocking.

by Anonymousreply 279May 30, 2022 8:02 AM

It will likely gross up to $300 Million by the close of Memorial Day Weekend. Those are the total, international numbers. It is doing very well in the U.S. market. Blowing past his average which is usually in the neighbohood of $60 Million fo the MI movies.

by Anonymousreply 280May 30, 2022 12:57 PM

[quote]I saw the movie last week. Don’t waste your time, although many will go anyways.

I’ve only seen the trailer and it did not make me want to see it.

by Anonymousreply 281May 30, 2022 3:40 PM

Hahaha that scene was ridiculous R278. In fact, I found the whole Jennifer Connelly character a complete waste of time. They could have easily shaved a good 30 minutes off the running time by not having her in it. The romantic side plot was boring.

All in all, I enjoyed the flight sequences. And I loved seeing Bill Pullman's son, Lewis, in a quirky but underdeveloped role. He was a standout and was robbed of screen time in my opinion. The biggest surprise though was Miles Teller. The guy's a douche but I thoroughly believed him as Goose's son. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a moustache though.

by Anonymousreply 282May 30, 2022 3:53 PM

Retired naval officer bud saw it with military friends. Said it was much more accurate than the 1st Top Gun. They all really liked it.

Saw it tonight.

It's a film that delivers everything you'd expect of it, and will no doubt more than satisfy fans of the original.

But dear Lord, that prologue was a total blowjob to Cruise's ego, making him look like the young stud of 1986. It could have been cut for time, but no, Tom needed his fix.

Jon Hamm plays Cruise's commanding officer as Don Draper in uniform, an order-barking ass.

And the timeline was odd, if you give it any thought. Goose's son would be around 40, certainly no hotheaded upstart in Naval flight training. And 51 year old Jennifer Connelly would most likely not have a 10-year-old daughter, as she does in this film.

All narrative tweaks, no doubt, to de-age Cruise, just like his hair dye, his veneers and his plastic surgery,

by Anonymousreply 287June 1, 2022 3:50 AM

R287, it’s very possible that Jennifer Connelly has a 10 year old daughter. In fact, she does in real life. This isn’t the 50s anymore with women having kids on their 20s, although I think she had one then too.

by Anonymousreply 288June 1, 2022 4:11 AM

Possible, but not probable, R287. It's still not the norm.

And that's not the larger point, anyway. Did you see the movie? There were a number of embellishments made to make Cruise look younger, and that was just one.

A woman Jennifer Connelly's age in reality would more likely have a 25 year-old daughter, but that would not served the purpose of shaving years off of Tommy's age.

by Anonymousreply 289June 1, 2022 4:26 AM

Eh, the prologue was as short as it could be, catching the audience up to all the years gone by, wisely using the iconic score. Yes, jobs were blown, but it worked. As did the film, for the kind of film that it was. It was ridiculous, but so was the original. Very slick with spectacular aerial photography. Tom looked great (...filmed three years ago...) but his hair was too dark. Even just some grey streaks or at least variation in tone would have been so much better. Still, he looked better than most his age. With help. Two reluctant thumbs up. Fine holiday fare.

by Anonymousreply 290June 1, 2022 4:31 AM

I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise the person but Tom Cruise the actor can still make a good action film as the new Top Gun is. I liked it better than the original. I could tell the audience was eating it up too. Good stuff and will be the blockbuster of the summer.

by Anonymousreply 291June 1, 2022 4:45 AM

ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER 05/31 **4**

We haven't had a really good summer blockbuster in ages. A big screen, fun summer movie and this delivers 100%. We went to see it over the holiday weekend and it was great. Lots of fun. Not too complicated, just very well done. We decided to watch the original to "prepare" and this new one is much better, and as far as Tom Cruise goes, this one is a lot less self indulgent. Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 294June 1, 2022 11:53 AM

Forgive me if this has already been said (I couldn't force myself to read the entire thread -- I hate this guy), but R21? The expression "the Old Man" in the military means the top-ranking officer in the unit, generally (in the Army), the Captain of a company or the Lt. Colonel of a battalion. It has only a tangential relationship to the age of the person.

by Anonymousreply 295June 1, 2022 12:18 PM

I saw this today and walked out after about an hour and a half. I really got this creepy, cultist feeling from it. It’s sort of like a Soviet or Nazi propaganda film, I kept thinking back to the spoof of the Nazi wartime film from Kiss of the Spiderwoman. Except this really has no ideology other than its own mythology. It’s sort of Trumpest in that way, although Scientology is probably the more apt metaphor, but both movements represent a kind of empty cultism. Even the seemingly innocuous introduction from Cruise becomes more sinister in retrospect, as if the movie is itself asking you for obedience. The criticism of the first film as Reaganist Pax-American propaganda is actually somehow less offensive than what the sequel represents. I’m having a hard time putting it into words, but I keep thinking to that scene in Back to the Future Part II where Marty sees the little museum in Biff Tanner’s casino with the fawning documentary on Biff’s life. That’s essentially what this is - Tom Cruise’s self-hagiography.

by Anonymousreply 296June 7, 2022 8:55 PM

My other criticism is that’s it’s probably the worst example of member berry filmmaking since… well, last fall’s Ghostbusters.

R296... i hear what you are saying and trying to say.. if one paid attention AND you knew about scientology, you could see and hear subtle dialogue and what not with cultie theory and mindset in more than a few cruise movies... The question is is this overreaching or does cruise have a hand in the writing and the script too and it's on purpose?

Will still boycott the film as I do all cruise films since mission impossible: ghost protocol... although I have to admit the behind the scenes making of this film, top gun maverick would be interesting if only for the flight sequences....

Unfortunately, I can't control that YOU and other people have no integrity and morals and are willing to support this individual and his vile organization. I've been proudly resisting for 30+ years now and I'm planning on doing so in the future.

Oh, don't be modest, R4. I'm sure you end up giving money to shady organizations and harming the environment unknowingly and unintentionally. Wokeness is a never ending spiral. I hope you never watched a Miramax movie in the movie theater because then you would have been giving money to Harvey Weinstein. I wouldn't be surprised if the actors, writers and directors with the most squeaky clean personal lives are the most dull and the least talented.

I hope you never listen to Wagner. That would make you an antisemite.

R306.. i'm not R4, and I won' try to pretend to speak for him, but are my thoughts on your last post:

Do you have any idea of critical thinking, context and nuance?

#1: pretty much everyone has given money or support to a bad organization in their lives, the difference is when you didn't know and found out later, here people KNOW about scientology and cruise and still go to see his movies, still give him money, big difference..

#2: The general public had no idea about weinstein and miramax... now that miramax is not runned by him, should people boycott that companies films today? Also, there is no comparison between weinstein and tom cruise! weinstein abused, sexual assaulted how many women? a handful? cruise is culpable and complicit to the abuse in every definition of the word abuse (financial, emotional, physical) of THOUSANDS of current members, ex-members and even critics (stalking, harassing, suing them) and made the leader of this whole thing a sociopath his best friend and ALL THIS TIME ALL THE WHILE has been documented royally ass kissed 24/7 for over 3 decades! NOW who has done the most damage, weinstein or cruise?

#3: comparing wagner for how long ago to a PRESENT ALIVE person like cruise is a black and white simpleton "argument'... We do we what we can do a person in present day. We can't do anything against wagner except privately and personally not listen to his music in our homes. The public CAN do stuff today with cruise and his cult...

R306 I stopped reading when you mentioned "wokeness". You're obviously just a troll.

Do you, R307? Scientology is one of the 20th and 21st century's greatest evils? Oh my sides.

There are people who find Cruise's beliefs problematic but still go to see his movies and enjoy them. If you and R4 want to be holier than thou, then go right ahead. It's your right.

I understand that Picasso was less than a perfect, enlightened man in the way he treated women. No one is cancelling him. Museums aren't getting rid of his paintings. Opera companies are putting on Wagner's works, sometimes the entire Ring cycle, because he was a great composer. He's not being cancelled. Cruise isn't one of the greatest artists of all time but he is a talented entertainer.

R306 is a fucking cunt. Not one word she says is true.

by Anonymousreply 310June 17, 2022 7:22 PM

It's all true, R310. Deal with it.

I see from your previous posts that you're a tad melodramatic.

I have no interest in seeing this. I'm tired of watching Tom Cruise as an old man in action movies. Let the younger folks have these roles.

I expect people are going for the aviation porn moreso than for Cruise

R304 here, I was wrong, it was still playing in the movie theater I went to. In fact, it was playing on 3 screens. Saw it in a packed theater with all ages, a lot of young teenagers. Unfortunately, the one crap thing about the theater is the people. There was a family behind me with 3 small kids who were talking and kicking away. I have no clue why people bring small kids to a movie like this. Phones and people going in and out of the theater too. I remembered why streaming got popular. Anyway, the movie was fantastic and despite the theater distractions, was great to watch on the big screen. At first I was like this might be over hyped, but it was awesome. Loved the last 30-45 min. Tom Cruise looked great and this movie reminded me of his screen presence. Haven’t seen a new release of his in years. The movie was really all about Maverick, the younger characters were very much supporting players, except MT towards the end.

I should should add I went at a weird ass time, 5pm, and it was packed, which surprised me. I think it’ll hit a billion WW, but it will be a shame if it misses out because of not playing in Russia and China.

Because they're selfish fucking assholes, oblivious to common courtesy and respect for others. If it isn't some Disney movie or some other G-Rated shit, your small kids don't belong in the fucking theater!

I saw this tonight and it was riveting entertainment. I had a blast. A modern blockbuster with nods to the original, but not too much nostalgia.
