Raymond Burr: Hiding in Plain Sight

Stumbled across this. An interesting read about Raymond Burr and his closeted life. Now I'm going to have to get the book.

There really is no reason to be a douche, other than you're R1 and playing to type. I thought it was interesting and wanted to share. If you're not interested, then fine. Move on to a topic that interests you. So, kindly, please fuck off.

Laird Cregar was the original Raymond Burr. I liked him better.

"I think the wives and the loving women, the Natalie Wood thing, were a bit of a cover."

[quote]According to Hale, "He had a great love for Barbara Stanwyck and for Natalie Wood..."

Was Miss Hale speaking about Raymond Burr or Robert Wagner?

That was a great article OP, thanks for posting.

Interesting article, Op, don't mind r1, not everyone here has read everything about Raymond Burr. I found it interesting that not only was being Gay in the 50s taboo, but a guy couldn't even be single without raising eyebrows. How stifling life was back then that you had to create a tragic "history" so that people would just leave you alone

A picture of Raymond Burr and his partner...

Look at that face! So masculine and yet vulnerable at the same time.

I would have given a lot to cuddle with him đŸ˜‹

Burr was the bear before bears were cool.

Raymond Burr was one of the very few Gay actors I got no Gay vibe from. He must have been a really good actor to keep that side of him so well hidden

I found this interesting.

[quote]"When the workers came to my house on Monday, I asked them how the meeting went on Sunday and they said 'fine,' but I could sense something was off-base," Hiller said. "They didn't have the enthusiasm that they had before, or which I expected. I kept at them, 'What's the matter?' Turned out they were going to do the work, but when they knocked and Raymond opened the door, he was wearing a pink bathrobe. And that put the one who just loved him away."

I found this funny. Was a pink bathroom a big no no for big masculine he men? So ridiculous.

[quote]Hedda's devotion to Raymond is illustrated in a story told by one of his intimates. One of Raymond's male conquests wrote a letter to Hedda, threatening to expose the actor's secret. Hedda, in turn, wrote to Raymond to apprise him of the situation—and to tell him that his secret was safe. She would, she told him, "stand up and swear anything" for him.

I wonder who Ray fucked and deleted.

It's also interesting to know that Ray loved cooking and hosting dinner parties.

^ Yeah, the pink bathrobe blew me away. That would be a lot of pink answering the door đŸ˜³

So he really did have a real wife for a brief period in the late 1940's, Isabella Ward. So why bother making up the fake dead one?

by Anonymousreply 15May 12, 2022 12:31 PM

^ Dead wives tell no tales

by Anonymousreply 16May 12, 2022 12:36 PM

I guess I was the only one who didn't know about Burr and Natalie Wood.

by Anonymousreply 17May 12, 2022 12:36 PM

^ I didn't know about Burr and anyone until not too long ago. He was just never on my radar screen

by Anonymousreply 18May 12, 2022 12:40 PM

Burr was actually quite good in his pre-Perry Mason specialty playing B movie heavies.

by Anonymousreply 19May 12, 2022 6:00 PM

I'm doing a Perry Mason rewatch. It was a really good show. That article makes it sound like everyone in Perry Mason world knew that Burr was gay,

by Anonymousreply 20May 12, 2022 6:44 PM

There are a lot of gay fat Canadians. He was just one among many.
