How Esther Rolle Got Her Spin Off
Adrienne Barbeau tells in her new autobiography.
Bea was a racist but so was everyone on the set but me. Connie (Conrad Baines) was the worst but Bill Macey was the kind of racist that would bang black chicks exclusively and thought he was doing them a favor.
I used to tell Esther to stand up for herself but she'd just shrug. Then during a taping with a live audience, Bea really got into one of her moods she was taking away all Esther's lines and saying "No, give that to Connie," or "Give that to Titty, (That is what she called me).
Well Esther had enough and said, "Why do you keep giving my jokes to someone else"? And the racist Bea Arthur says "Black people aren't funny." Then adds, "It's MY SHOW and You'll do AS I SAY, ON MY SHOW."
Then Esther comes back with, "No, it's an ensemble, if it was YOUR show it would be "The Bea Arthur Show," not "Maude."
And suddenly the whole audience and cast erupts with laughter and Bea sceams "Get that black bitch off my set."
So in order to keep peace and not get sued again, Norman Lear gave Esther her own spin off to get rid of her.
Norman had earlier been sued for Connie's racism and the result was Connie had to do community service. Of course being Hollywood, his service was delayed until the series ended and it wound up having him have to star in a show with minorities. Can you imagine that?

Wow, talk about ratched. I just assume everyone is racist to some extent, some are more polite about it than others, you can't legislate how people feel. But that was a nasty scenario... Very disappointing, but life is disappointing. We all have to make a more concerted effort to allow the better angels of our nature to shine through, to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln...

First time ever hearing Bea Arthur was a racist. I knew she was a drunk and temperament but never a racist.
Also, I remember on RuPaul’s VH1 TV show reunited Bea and Esther and they both chatted with each other like ole friends. We’re they faking it for the cameras?

You guys cannot seriously be this stupid.
The OP's post is unsourced and riddled with basic spelling errors. You think it's real? Come the fuck on, people.

Bea would openly criticize Esther's acting abilities, saying she didn't know how to play comedy.
"She don't do windows and she don't do comedy."

Now you know why you never saw any blacks on The Golden Girls aside from when Bea demanded Rue & Betty appear in blackface to mock guest stars.

Esther Rolle was the best part of Maude. I saw her some years later onstage in Chicago in a a play based on King Lear, in which she played a Caribbean mother. It was called Dame Lorraine. She was devastating—one of the ten greatest performances I’ve ever seen.

Very funny, OP. No, not really. Bea Arthur was a drunk, but OP's story is waaaay too stupid to be real.

As a gayling watching the show with my parents I always preferred Mrs. Nell Naugatuck. I thought she came out of Mary Poppins or something like that.

I distinctly remember Bea and Esther did a George Schlosser comedy/variety/feminist show called "The Shape of Things" and sang an ode to men's butts called "Buns."

Was Esther thinking about her co-star John Amos when she was singing about men's butts?

So R1 is one of those newbie-headed "supportive" cunts who has to jump in and ask about (1.) the point of the thread and (2.) the meaning of a name appearing in the third sentence of the OP's post.
R1 is what would be called, by the assembled casts and crews of "Maude," "Good Times," "What's Happening!!", "The Billy Graham Crusade Show," "Louis Farrakhan Live," "60 Minutes" and "The View," as a cunt.

I kinda like how Bea called Adreinne "titty" to let her know exactly why she was on the show.

Bea also openly criticized Adrienne Barbeau's acting talents, saying she much preferred Marcia Rodd who played the part in the pilot.

Adrienne Barbeau published an autobiography in 2007 and a shorter memoir in 2017.
Amazon lists no upcoming biography.

OP is obviously a joke, but R9 is accurate. That quote is on video during Bea's interview with the Museum of Broadcasting or something like that. I've seen it.

Of Barbeau, Bea said "Well, she tried. The other girl from the pilot was much better as my daughter." Bea was talking about Marcia Rodd.

Bea didn't like Esther. Was she threatened by Esther's talent?

Bea was a role-model hero to a lot of young people and especially gaylings, but she really was a monster.
When Rufus Wainright met her, he admitted that she was his idol in youth, thinking of her as his kind of fairy godmother.
And Bea replied, "I'm not your fucking godmother."

Very funny post OP. Bea calling Adrienne "Titty"? LOL. Adrienne always had nice things to say about Bea so I'm pretty sure she didn't call her that. There's a very funny Maude episode where a couple of swingers want to have sex with Maude and Walter. Then the man starts hitting on Carol and Maude says "You don't want Carol. You should see her first thing in the morning, completely flat-chested!" I thought that was hilarious.
