Candace Cameron Bure is the first thing I think of when I think of fraus.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 9, 2022 4:17 AM |
r2 as a person or characters she portrays?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 9, 2022 4:22 AM |
Either, but her Hallmark/soon to be GAC depictions are frauness personified.

Mary Kay Place
Mare Winningham

Not sure about best but my go-to Frau example is always Edie McClurg's portrayal of the secretary in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Or Edie M in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. Religious frau.
Kathy Baker is also kinda frau-ish but I really like her.

Melanie Lynskey is fantastic in everything, but especially at playing fraus.

Maura Tierney.

R5 You could say the same thing about her fellow Hallmark star Lacey Chabert. Ever seen her in an interview promoting her Hallmark stuff?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 11, 2022 6:09 PM |
It's a testament to their skill that many actresses who excel at portraying fraus never had kids (or, in some cases, even husbands).
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 11, 2022 6:12 PM |
R11. Kathy Bates was my first thought. Although, a frau would never repeatedly smash into another car like Evelyn did.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 11, 2022 6:15 PM |
R7 R9 Edie was scarcely 40 when she had that string of roles as matronly Fraus and midwestern ditzes.
Same for Debra Jo Rupp and Kathy Bates. They came to fame later than others, but they just had the "motherly" look even when they weren't that old.

I feel like people are getting frau and frump confused. Edie McClurg, Mary Jo Witlett, Kathy Bates, and Melanie Lynskey are frumps. Cynthia Stevenson, Mary Kay Place, and Maura Tierney are terrific examples of fraus.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 11, 2022 7:05 PM |
Exactly, r33. Kathy Bates is not a Frau. Kathy Baker is a Frau. Jennifer Garner is a Frau.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 11, 2022 7:22 PM |
Louise Lasser
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 11, 2022 7:24 PM |
Frumps can also be fraus.

[quote]I feel like people are getting frau and frump confused.
Same. I always thought of a frau as a woman whom is typically conservative, loves Jesus and a bit plump. She is basic and simple and loves everything middle American like Michael Kors and scrapbooking. She definitely has a craft room and has owned a SUV or mini van at some point.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 11, 2022 7:25 PM |
Frump is a subset of frau.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 11, 2022 9:41 PM |
Mary Hartman was a freak not a Frau.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 11, 2022 9:42 PM |
She was obsessed with waxy yellow buildup, a foundational frau issue!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 11, 2022 9:58 PM |
[quote]Frump is a subset of frau.
Is it, though? I personlly have known many women who are not frumps, but who definitely meet frau criteria. I don’t think being frumpy is related. A lot of lesbians and feminists are dumpy, but they are definitely not frauen.

Vanessa Bayer

[quote] Frump is a subset of frau.
Not at all. DL Frauen can intersect with Frumps on a Venn diagram, but most, actually, DGAF women are anti-Frau in their outlook.
For instance, all blonde women from Salt Lake City with more than 2 children, a yoga toned body and a MLM are Frauen, regardless of their commitment to looking hot for their man.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 12, 2022 5:06 PM |
I don't know if she qualifies as a frau, but I'm watching the movie "Luce" and it occurs to me Naomi Watts is always perfect as the annoying washed-out blonde lady. That's mean, I'm sorry.
Speaking of the movie, someone on here said it was good so I decided to watch. It's kind of disjointed and boring to me. Octavia Spencer is good. Tim Roth is weird and detached as always, and I have no idea what sort of accent he's doing.

I do too. For some reason, I thought she was well cast as Jennifer Garner's mother in 13 Going 30.

There was a great character actress back in the '80s named Lucy Lee Flippen who used to be great at playing fraus. She has since retired:

r37 I think there are many subtypes but they share a commonality of putting on airs.. they're the greatest mother, greatest wife, greatest at everying -- sometimes the greatest at even being most dysfunctional. They brag about it. They act like it's a brand as they have a signature style of dressing, talking, doing things.. They're always wound tight with an easily triggered low self esteem that's paired with an overinflated ego -- there's a massive two ton cunt just beneath the surface ready to rip your head off over a perceived slight. The main problem they have is that eveyone including their spouse and children are threat to whatever fantasy they're trying to present. Thus it's unsurprising so many claim to have narcissistic mothers, spouses, children.. a sheer talent of finding them everywhre in their lives. Which I suppose sounds more exciting than plain ol' empty nest syndrome.
you shall recocognize them by their holiday family portrait and plastered smiles.

Kate McKinnon has frau face. I woudln't be surprised if she becomes a total frau actress.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 14, 2022 7:39 PM |
R61, McKinnon will segue into Kathy Griffin’s career before D List. Celebrity Pyramid, direct to video sequels to kids movies. On the Carole Baskin show, she was too self conscious to play the role in any authentic way. Same old weirdo ticks. That’s the kiss of death for a star.

R62 Nicole Sullivan would've won Emmy/GG gold for that role, and it would've brought her career into a fresh new light.
But no, they had to stunt-cast it with everyone's favorite sketch dyke. Sure, she sucks at most impressions and hasn't disappeared into a role in years, but she's SO BRAVE!

Jeanne Tripplehorn is The Queen of Fraus. She is forever being typecast as a Frau. She's always someone's virtuous, suburban wife.
