In 1989, I would have stalked Craig Sheffer, too.
Inspired by the superior German film Zuckerbaby.

Did she wear a fat suit?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 8, 2022 2:08 PM |
I was so in love with Sheffer back then. I thought he was about the hottest guy I’d ever seen.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 8, 2022 2:09 PM |
She WAS the fat suit, R4.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 8, 2022 2:21 PM |
Betty Lynn is such a bitch in this!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 8, 2022 2:27 PM |
R7 - you’d be so pretty if only you’d lose all that horrible fat!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 8, 2022 2:29 PM |
Don't you need to go "open your throat," r8?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 8, 2022 2:30 PM |
Do I know you, R9? You’re fat! Ugly! Make me sick! You TRASH!!!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 8, 2022 2:43 PM |
Would Betty Lynn really marry Harvey Lacey?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 8, 2022 2:48 PM |
I watched this when it came out. Back when network TV made original movies.

The woman in that film just seems like a schizo. I prefer the American version. There is more substance and character development.

It was a magical time, r12
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 8, 2022 3:21 PM |
“No, Johnny, no!” Oh wait, that was the girl playing Ricky’s bff in her other movie (Moonstruck.)
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 8, 2022 8:36 PM |
Cute movie, hot Craig…but I hate fake New York City locations.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 8, 2022 8:36 PM |
I went to a Chris Makos exhibit and had forgotten about Sheffer—and how hot he was—until I saw Makos’s early photo of him hanging on the wall.

Sugarbaby (Zuckerbaby) is on Tubi (free app). The star of the film, German actress Marianne Sagebrecht, was also in the good films Bagdad Cafe (1988) and Rosalie Goes Shopping (1981, with Brad Davis)...also in The War of the Roses (1989) with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Sheffer looked great in his little black briefs
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 10, 2022 6:40 PM |
Is it called Babycakes because she eats a whole cake for breakfast everyday?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 10, 2022 7:10 PM |
Craig Sheffer hit a wall quickly. He looked awful on One Tree Hill and that was almost twenty years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 10, 2022 8:18 PM |
Craig's brother Hogan ended up, after taking a long, weird path, being the headwriter of As The World Turns.
He was also hugely overweight....as in, you almost couldn't believe a muscular guy like Craig and this guy were related.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 10, 2022 8:24 PM |
i was in an acting class with Craig circa 1984 in NYC..... nice, attractive guy like a billion others ..... easygoing, confident, masculine with no attitude.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 10, 2022 8:35 PM |
R25 - did he smell nice? In my teenage 1989 mind he smelled like cotton candy and musk.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 11, 2022 1:08 PM |
Gosh, he was a great asshole in Some Kind of Wonderful, made James Spader's fey little ways in Pretty in Pink seem downright sponge-like.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 11, 2022 1:11 PM |
Um R27 Spader's Steff strength was in his fey-ness. He made a much more original, less stereotypical villain. Sheffer in SKOW was a stereotypical bully. Blegh.
I hate this movie. So unrealistic. I could give 3 shits how shallow that makes me.

Any reliable gossip on Sheffer sizemeat?

Was there a scene in this movie where ricki lake was rolling on the floor screaming and crying?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 11, 2022 1:47 PM |
R30 Yes. Someone took away her Entenmann's donuts.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 11, 2022 1:48 PM |
Yes R28, it was so realistic of Spader to walk around the high school with no books dressed like a Miami Vice reject. Just wonderful. I love a 35 year old high school student, it's oh so understanding of the school system to keep him there, year after year.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 11, 2022 1:56 PM |
advice to aspiring actresses....."never play opposite an actor better looking than you"
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 11, 2022 3:32 PM |
R32 lol it wasn't more realistic but I'd rather watch Spader's hot as the sun Steff strut around the school than fat Ricki Lake cry herself into a box of Krispy Kremes because the hot guy didn't want her
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 11, 2022 4:14 PM |
R32. Spader himself has joked about this on talkshows, saying that he didn't think Steff was actually a student but some guy in his early 20s who just 'hung out' around the high school.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 11, 2022 4:44 PM |
I capped to this while cutting high school in ‘89.
The one thing I remember was Ricki saying something like, “Don’t step on the evil eye” when stepping off the bed in the morning; she says this to Craig, who stumbles, thinking there’s something on the floor.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 11, 2022 5:27 PM |
Capped?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 11, 2022 5:51 PM |
Fapped
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 11, 2022 5:52 PM |
I went out on a few dates with Ricki Lake around this time. I remember this movie airing during my freshman year in college. I called her afterwards to tell her how good she was (left a VM) and she never called me back and I never saw her again.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 11, 2022 5:58 PM |
Ha, Spader was savvy at least. I just think Scheffer's portrayal is way more true to how guys in high school actually are, esp. the rich ones.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 11, 2022 7:19 PM |
Harvey Lacey was Betty's beard r11

I think Sheffer's character's fiancee catches him and Ricky Lake dancing together in some nightclub, goes berserk and begins pummeling Ricki, who then falls to the floor in the fetal position.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 11, 2022 7:31 PM |
r36 Well, technically, in the 1980s and 1990s you were jerking off or beating off. Or wanking.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 12, 2022 3:50 AM |
This movie has the fashion down. Kenya bags, omg. And sugar babies. Vending machines. Cheap windbreakers. And the great bulky long coats.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 12, 2022 3:56 AM |
Betty Lynn was right to throw that horrible "wedding present" oil painting into the dumpster; I would've done the same.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 12, 2022 4:04 AM |
Betty Lynn didn’t throw it into the dumpster. She gave it to back the fat daughter, who’s the one who trashed it.

is there any update on Craig Sheffer?
I didn't realize he was married to Ryan O'Neal ex

by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 10, 2023 12:54 PM |
I still love this movie. Ricki is wonderful, and Craig was still in his hot piece of ass phase. I can still here the theme song in my head…[italic]”🎵Babycakes…oh,oh,oh,ohhh…”🎶[/italic]

Craig Sheffer in more recent times. I guess things haven’t been great.
The interviewer’s vocal fry is hardcore.

It was a fun movie, very late 1980s style . It had a wonderful which included Betty Buckley and John Karlan.

When this aired originally, I wished it were a TV adaptation of the Armistead Maupin book, Babycakes.
