Anyway, OP, one theory of why women stay -- beyond economic -- is trauma bonding. In a lot of these relationships, the man isolates the woman from friends/family. He becomes the sole source of emotional support. Imagine getting the shit beat out of you. You'd want nothing more than someone to comfort you, love you, make you feel safe again. In abusive relationships, that person is often the abuser, and this creates a tragic, but often ironclad, bond. A lot of these women become very emotionally dependent on their abusers and become convinced they can't function without him. One study analyzed the jailhouse telephone calls between men arrested for DV and their wives/girlfriends. It found these men used love, not fear, to try to convince the women to drop the charges. They adopted an "us against the world" outlook.

I also think abusers and victims "find each other." Abusers test the waters early to see how much they can get away with (but it starts with smaller things) and then the abuse escalates. They often isolate the victim, but again, it's subtle, like "I want us to spend all our time together" rather than "I don't want you having friends." One woman I knew really wanted a large, traditional wedding with family and friends; her fiance refused to allow anyone to attend other than a couple of witnesses and no one from her family. By that point, he had pretty effectively isolated her under the guise of "I want you all to myself."

Long-term abuse leads to mental health problems; then the abuser can turn around and say, "See, she's the crazy one." Or better still: "She's the REAL abuser."

There is no such thing as a perfect victim, and women (and despite what the incel trolls claim, it is usually women) who are abused have flaws, often suffer from addiction and other mental health problems, and are not always the most likeable people. All these things work in the abuser's favor.

Not true. I don't mean in a nonbinary sense, I mean in the way you mean. There are a lot of gay men in abusive relationships and they don't leave either.

The basis for domestic violence is coercive control, which is aimed at isolating you from your support network and destroying your self-esteem. (He wants you to feel that you're no-one if you're not with him, which is also why he'll often kill you if you leave.) He will often control the finances as well. (Straight controlling men will leap in when she has the first kid to take control of the money while she's not earning.) He will also be physically intimidating, whether or not he hits you. Lots of shouting, looming over you when you try to state your point of view (cf Donald and Hillary), etc. If you ever do look like you'll leave, he breaks down, says he doesn't know what he'd do without you, love-bombs you all over again.

Coercive control can go on for quite a long time before there is any actual violence. The idea is that by that time you will be so manipulated you feel you deserve it. Sometimes murder is the first sign of physical violence: but the coercive control has been in place for a long time. Leaving him is when you are typically in the most danger, which is another disincentive.

You'd be surprised the number of gay men (and lesbians) who are in this situation.

If you haven't experienced coercive control, studied it or seen it in a friend or relative, you can't impose your judgment about what the abused person should do, because you're coming from a place of not having had all your initiative meticulously eroded over a long time.

I started listening to the recordings yesterday since there were so many threads on DL and I got curious.

I’m not a JD fan as I’m older. I had no clue who AH was. Nor did I read tabloids about their marriage. I was truly a virgin in this saga. Until last night.

Geesh. The recordings, which seem to be all done by Amber and submitted by Amber, make her look so nutter, clingy, button-pushing, victimhood-searching, gaslighting, imaginary-blaming, circular-argumentative, delusional, and victim-claiming.

IF, and that's a HUGE if, you believe she's telling the truth, feeling trapped and staying is a classic part of the abuse cycle. Unfortunately, it's also part of not being abused. So, here staying or leaving isn't really all the instructive about whether she actually was or was not abused.

I don't doubt that did a lot of crap to each other. However, if you're as violent and retaliating as violently as you're being treated, as well as initiating the violence as frequently as defending yourself, it's not abuse.

I recently saw Murder In The Orient Express. It’s has a very good late-era performance from Johnny. But damn if his behaviour during Amber’s testimony - the grinning, turning, theatrical eye rolls - isn’t unfortunately reminiscent of Rachett in manner, without the veneer of sophistication and intelligence. There’s so much darkness and hate there.
