"You'll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again"

I never see this book mentioned on here, but I'm sure lots here must be familiar with it.

It's over 30 years old now. Interestingly she skewers DL non-faves Scott Rudin and Cybill Shepherd, so maybe she was way ahead of the curve?

I tried reading it as a younger gayling but couldn't get into it. Now that I have more wisdom and fashionable clothing, I should give it another try.

by Anonymousreply 1May 7, 2022 11:11 PM

It was a fun and dishy read.

by Anonymousreply 2May 7, 2022 11:26 PM

I’ve enjoyed reading it at least 3 times. I liked Julia Phillips.

by Anonymousreply 3May 7, 2022 11:26 PM

She calls Rudin a "fat slob" but doesn't mention his main problem, that he's a monster. Was his behavior better way back then? Or were her observational powers off because of all the stuff she put up her nose?

by Anonymousreply 4May 7, 2022 11:28 PM

Who else does she nail?

by Anonymousreply 5May 7, 2022 11:28 PM

Goldie Hawn R5. She says she's dirty -- as in doesn't bathe.

by Anonymousreply 6May 7, 2022 11:30 PM

It's a dishy read!

Here's a 10-year old thread about it.

The amount of dish in the book is relatively minimal and not that interesting, it’s a mostly a chronicle of Phillips’ messy life. She wrote it because she was broke.

by Anonymousreply 9May 7, 2022 11:36 PM

She got into freebase quite heavily.

by Anonymousreply 10May 7, 2022 11:50 PM

Some of it was touching, (like her recollections of Mama Cass) but some of it was cruel. I thought her comments about Cybill Shepherd and Kathleen Turner were in very poor taste. I get wanting to take shots at those who've wronged you, but some of it was just being mean for the sake of it. She eviscerated Goldie Hawn, but after reading about the troubled pre-production of Fear of Flying, you couldn't really blame her for doing so.

Her description of Blythe Danner as some annoying, shrieking harpy led to me to never believe the DL lore than she was some blameless victim in the upbringing of GOOP.

I read the whole thing in two days. If you have any interest in the Hollywood star making machinery of the 1970s pick up a copy on abebooks.

by Anonymousreply 12May 8, 2022 12:07 AM

OP, it used to be talked about here ALL the time.

by Anonymousreply 13May 8, 2022 12:12 AM

It was VERY dishy when it was published in the early '90s about Hollywood of the '70s and early '80s. It's old hat now, since the dish is about people like Goldie and Richard Dreyfuss and Spielberg, and nowadays current celebs show their absolute worst excesses and impulses on social media every single day.

But at the time, it was heady stuff. If you're interested in Hollywood history, you'll probably enjoy it.

by Anonymousreply 14May 8, 2022 12:12 AM

Her sane-seeming ex hubby is still around, and her son in law Modi Wiczyk is a Hollywood power broker

by Anonymousreply 15May 8, 2022 12:16 AM

didn't she croak?

by Anonymousreply 16May 8, 2022 12:27 AM

She died over 20 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 17May 8, 2022 12:30 AM

She exposed the widespread practice of witchcraft in Hollywood by the biggest people in the business. They really believe that witchcraft is the reason for their success.

by Anonymousreply 18May 8, 2022 12:39 AM

[quote] and nowadays current celebs show their absolute worst excesses and impulses on social media every single day.

I think we think that, but really they might show us 5% at most.

I devoured that book when it came out. At the time it seemed to be very revealing and shocking at times, it was like a really mean Andy Warhol. I wish that she had kept diaries and they will be published.

by Anonymousreply 20May 8, 2022 12:44 AM

Richard Dreyfus was a big cokehead.

by Anonymousreply 21May 8, 2022 12:47 AM

I wish it was on Kindle! Everyone, go to Amazon and tell them you want to read it on Kindle.

It's a huge book and I have arthritis.

by Anonymousreply 22May 8, 2022 12:48 AM

True r19. Celebs get up to a lot more shit than what the public sees on social media. The number of closet cases is nuts.

by Anonymousreply 23May 8, 2022 12:48 AM

No one cares.

by Anonymousreply 24May 8, 2022 1:18 AM

She was scary and fabulous.
