How big was it culturally in the gay community?
For all its controversy, not many people saw it.
It didn't play in theatres for very long.

I used to love it but the last time I saw it, I understood why the director didn't want Pacino for the lead. He wasn't right and was just trying to do a Pacino. The director's original choice of Richard Gere would've been much more interesting and nuanced.
