Roche Bobois

Who buys this ugly as fuck shit?

by Anonymousreply 89May 14, 2022 9:14 PM

They have a store on the upper west side of NYC and the ugliness is stunning. Or am I missing something?

My lower back also hurts. And I am abruptly blind now.

by Anonymousreply 5May 7, 2022 4:32 PM

Looks like Greg Brady lives in this room as an adult . Or should I say Johnny Bravo.

by Anonymousreply 6May 7, 2022 4:35 PM

Haven’t been in years, but in the past while it was 95% painful to look at, they had the occasional interesting piece that might have worked in isolation.

by Anonymousreply 7May 7, 2022 4:42 PM

Agreed, OP. R-B sells the kind of modern that I dislike - I can’t put it into words but it’s very cold to me.

by Anonymousreply 8May 7, 2022 4:45 PM

They had full page ads in The NY Times Sunday Magazine every week (probably still do but I haven’t read the physical newspaper in years). Their ads would have prestigious cities - New York - Paris - London - Tokyo and the like under their name. I assumed there were a few stores in strategic locales like that, but looking just now they have dozens of stores in some dodgy places. They’ve got stores in Moscow and some provincial city in Siberia. These are still open so I guess they just don’t give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 9May 7, 2022 4:52 PM

There's a lot of money in catering to poor taste. What else would one put in their McMansion?

by Anonymousreply 10May 7, 2022 4:59 PM

Ugly as fuck, but at least it looks as if it might be comfortable which is more than I can say for a lot of modern furniture

by Anonymousreply 11May 7, 2022 5:12 PM

Disco lounge furniture?

by Anonymousreply 12May 7, 2022 5:28 PM

They have some nice things. Based on any of the threads about style or design on here it’s safe to say that you can confidently assume the opposite of the datalounge consensus is true.

They’ve done some cool fabric collabs with fashion designers (gaultier / missoni etc) and some really fun glass things (murano table incl. legs). Of course your average DL person is going to judge a sofa solely by analysis on how it would affect their bad back. I’ll let you work through that situation on your own.

by Anonymousreply 13May 7, 2022 5:37 PM

I love to sit upon a Roche Bobois while eating a Ferrero Rocher!

by Anonymousreply 15May 7, 2022 5:50 PM

Can one fuck on these sofas without falling off? Or at least get blown?

by Anonymousreply 22May 7, 2022 6:22 PM

R22 asks the important questions.

by Anonymousreply 23May 7, 2022 6:35 PM

A while back they were carrying seating that looked Moroccan... lush, vibrant colors. I imagined lying across those cushions stoned off my ass.

by Anonymousreply 24May 7, 2022 6:42 PM

I have a Roche Bobois Mah Jong bed and it’s absolutely beautiful. I love the jagged headboard and the vast customization possibilities — in the case of the both the Mah Jong sofa and bed, you can pick your own fabrics for each cushion/piece.

Roche Bobois makes exceptionally high quality furniture that stands the test of time. While contemporary, I wouldn’t really call it modern design, unlike my other bed, the Capellini ‘Bed’.

Carmela Soprano loved Roche Bobois!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 26May 7, 2022 6:48 PM

What is insane are the prices! I could live with some of their stuff - but it is insane what people pay for it. I don’t care if it’s made of steel/gold/platinum - it’s overpriced.

by Anonymousreply 27May 7, 2022 7:16 PM

The very definition of Veblen goods, R27. Part of the pleasure, as Carmela Soprano obviously knew, is having neighbors see the truck outside your house so they know you're the kind of person who can afford overpriced furniture.

by Anonymousreply 28May 7, 2022 7:19 PM

So . . . how does one get into furniture design?

by Anonymousreply 29May 7, 2022 7:19 PM

It helps that you grow up in the furniture industry. Furniture is a lot like fashion in that it's incestuous and all about nepotism. If you're not born into it, it's a tough business to navigate

by Anonymousreply 36May 8, 2022 3:07 AM

I find their furniture interesting and unique. Too bad it’s so expensive. Plus, it only makes sense in a huge room, as displayed in their stores.

by Anonymousreply 37May 8, 2022 3:59 AM

Southern Florida.

by Anonymousreply 38May 8, 2022 4:01 AM

It looks like something you would use to stage an upscale condo. Bland but "trendy" furniture.

by Anonymousreply 39May 8, 2022 10:03 AM

I absolutely love Roche Bobois. And Ligne Roset too. The sofa in OP’s picture is incredibly comfortable, and comes with a very extensive choice of colours and fabrics. Yes it’s a very expensive brand, similarly to B&B Italia, etc. What a lot of you don’t seem to realise is that we’re talking here of furniture designed by trendy furniture designers who command astronomical fees. Made of very quality materials, that’s assembled by hand by highly skilled craftsmen in France or Italy. All of this comes with a price that’s going to be higher than some knock-off shit manufactured on a production line in China by slave labour.

by Anonymousreply 40May 8, 2022 10:30 AM

[Quote] What a lot of you don’t seem to realise is that we’re talking here of furniture designed by trendy furniture designers

What you don’t seem to realise is that it’s ugly as fuck

by Anonymousreply 41May 8, 2022 11:50 AM

The thing I hate most about contemporary furniture is that because of the many cheap knock-offs it always looks cheap no matter how good it is

by Anonymousreply 42May 8, 2022 11:56 AM

It’s weird looking but has a certain flair. I love it

by Anonymousreply 43May 8, 2022 12:18 PM

It’s not suitable for maiden aunts.

by Anonymousreply 44May 8, 2022 12:31 PM

There are a few stores near my friend's place in NYC that sell this stuff. I always figured these pieces are for big loft-like spaces where normal furniture would look miniscule.

Roche Bobois, dumbest name ever.

by Anonymousreply 49May 8, 2022 3:12 PM

I worked there for about 5 years, overall a good experience. Their leather sofas are outstanding, beautifully crafted and really hold up. I was most frustrated with their fabric selection, I remember doing a lot of COM, so a 15k sectional ended up being more like 20K...hopefully that's changed.

by Anonymousreply 50May 8, 2022 4:02 PM

Don't know about here, but in France Roche-Bobois has several collections. I bought a sofa and coffee table from RB in France 15 years ago from the Provinciales collection. Still gorgeous. The sofa pictured in OP's post looks more like something from an Italian sofa maker - Cinna or B&B.

by Anonymousreply 51May 8, 2022 4:11 PM

I meant Ligne Roset for "Cinna" - that was the model I looked at. I bought a sofa from B&B Italia back when it was C&B - this was....50 years ago. Had to get the sofa recovered at some point, but it looked great and held its shape for 30 years till I bought the Roche Bobois sectional to replace it.

by Anonymousreply 52May 8, 2022 5:01 PM

How’s the fart absorption rate on RB sofas?

by Anonymousreply 53May 8, 2022 8:05 PM

It looks very "Roseanne"

I like to keep my crack immaculate.

by Anonymousreply 55May 10, 2022 2:09 PM

Is it pronounced boh-boh-ah?

by Anonymousreply 56May 10, 2022 2:11 PM

A whole lot of people go to Vegas and it's the only time they encounter contemporary design. They associate it with sophistication and pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 57May 10, 2022 2:16 PM

The Mah Jong is really nice. The Missoni version is pretty up on the ground? Any furniture experts feel free to correct me, I think the sofa in OP's picture is a descendant of the DeSede snake sofa (1972).

by Anonymousreply 58May 10, 2022 3:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 60May 10, 2022 3:30 PM

It's a look. I think some can pull off certain pieces from them, as someone above stated. The small sofa looks better proportioned than the sectional. This style looks a bit like a cheap copy of a de Sede sofa to my eye. If I were a purveyor of this look, or a designer, I would shoot for the original Suisse, over the RB: I would choose leather over fabric as well.

by Anonymousreply 61May 10, 2022 3:48 PM

R56 Buh-bwah

by Anonymousreply 62May 10, 2022 3:53 PM

R62 it's Bow-bwa

by Anonymousreply 63May 10, 2022 4:09 PM

It's Grand-Auntie Mame's place in 1967!

by Anonymousreply 64May 10, 2022 4:14 PM

R63 We obviously speak a bit differently. My longest instructor at University was Francophone - Suisse... I pronounce it NOT as bow.

by Anonymousreply 65May 10, 2022 4:16 PM

Having lived in Suisse Romande for many years R63 I know how it's pronounced.

by Anonymousreply 66May 10, 2022 4:18 PM

R66 And how do you pronounce the name? I would think Boo-bois before bow-bois... but I never claimed to be correct, just stating how I say the name. I put the emphasis on the bois, and the buh is very short.

by Anonymousreply 67May 10, 2022 4:25 PM

Teletubbies? That was my first thought when I saw that picture. Colors not as bright but no sharp edges anywhere and close to the ground. Perfect for toddlers.

by Anonymousreply 68May 10, 2022 5:23 PM

Bob-wa

by Anonymousreply 69May 10, 2022 5:28 PM

Thanks, r62, r63, r69! It's not like I can afford it, so I won't be saying it much anyway! 🙂

by Anonymousreply 70May 10, 2022 6:02 PM

R67 if it were pronounced Boo-Bwa, it would be spelled Boubois.

by Anonymousreply 71May 10, 2022 7:40 PM

It's and open "o" sound in Bobois. The "o" sound is like the "o" in "son," closer to "uh" than "oh."

by Anonymousreply 72May 10, 2022 9:33 PM

Cheers R72, that's encouraging, though I'm British, and we pronounce most everything wrong. R71 Spellings don't always make it so, especially when a Surname or Family name is concerned. Even after doing a google check, the first voice that came up clearly sounds like Boo-bwah... Perhaps certain names are pronounced differently. Here in Chicago, they answer the telephone "Buh-Bwah"... that I DO know for certain.

R56 You're welcome.

R66 here it's BowBwa.

by Anonymousreply 75May 11, 2022 11:14 PM

Much obliged R66/R75

by Anonymousreply 76May 12, 2022 4:17 PM

R72, I'm pretty sure there is no vowel sound in French that is like the short "u" sound in "son". If you click on R73's link, it is not a short "u".

by Anonymousreply 77May 12, 2022 4:34 PM

It's pronounced babawawa.
