Is No One Watching Shining Girls?

It’s a very good creep the fuck out serial killer series with time travel elements and phenomenal production values on Apple +TV. I know there’s a lot of critical dismissal of Elizabeth Moss on DL, but she’s killing it here and using her resting bitch face to great advantage. Jamie Bell can look disturbing one moment and very sexy hot the next, and he’s very menacing. The subtle, but shocking shifts between times is handled really well and quite unnerving. It’s definitely driven by what the deeper mystery regarding the time travel is and how it works, I hope there’s some clear explanation at the end.

I loathe time-travel. It’s so annoying.

by Anonymousreply 1May 7, 2022 4:35 AM

It's pretty good, but for a show that takes place in 1990s Chicago, I would expect stronger accents.

by Anonymousreply 2May 7, 2022 4:42 AM

I will likely watch because I compromise my values frequently, but yes, she’s a creepy, raised in captivity, tithing Scientologist.

by Anonymousreply 3May 7, 2022 4:44 AM

A Scientologist cunt, yeah, thanks. Who or Why,?

by Anonymousreply 4May 7, 2022 7:42 AM

She has a face like a dish cloth.

Her Scientology always precedes her and the membership presumes a very high level of hatred against those who aren't Scientologists, right?

So why even bother asking?

by Anonymousreply 6May 7, 2022 8:10 AM

Started to watch, but it’s like a nineties version of June so far.

by Anonymousreply 7May 7, 2022 8:25 AM

I enjoyed Moss on "Mad Men" (I own the series), & have seen bits of "Handmaid's Tale". I'll just stick to watching her on "Mad Men", which I re-watch every other year or so.

by Anonymousreply 8May 7, 2022 11:32 AM

I watched 20 minutes just to hear well-known Brazilian actor Wagner Moura speak English. I've only seen him act in Portuguese. Otherwise, the premise was mildly interesting but the acting was wooden.

by Anonymousreply 9May 7, 2022 11:35 AM

OP Most of them don’t have Apple TV. The same ones who whine about New York Times subscription rates.

by Anonymousreply 10May 7, 2022 4:19 PM

Ive watched the first three. I’m gripped. I think the billy elliot guy is creepy as hell.

by Anonymousreply 11May 7, 2022 4:45 PM

Her Scientology association is such a dick wilter. Did she join before or after Mad Men?

by Anonymousreply 12May 7, 2022 4:46 PM

Lol, I love reading these articles that were translated into another language and then translated back into English, they make for a hilarious description of the work at hand. I do like this title better though. They also somehow enhanced the picture of her too, she never looked better, she should have her people reach out to them.

It really is, R12. She was raised in Scientology, so she'd been a member for decades before landing "Mad Men". It's just gross, and disappointing.

^ Ahh ok and as I look at her more I can see it very clearly now.

by Anonymousreply 15May 7, 2022 7:56 PM

I watched first episode and couldn't get into it. But I'll give it another shot. Unlike many DLers, I'm an Elizabeth Moss fan. Didn't her parents get her involved in Scientology when she was a kid?

by Anonymousreply 16May 7, 2022 7:59 PM

Some of y’all need to separate the artist from the art, this is an amazing show and should be DL catnip. Also, anyone who liked the recent Invisible Man, this has a very similarly taut feel to it, and they’re sustaining it with each episode. I never thought Philippa Soo would be much of an actress off the stage, but she’s doing some good work here. And as loathsome as Jamie Bell is being, he’s still attractively fuckable.

by Anonymousreply 17May 13, 2022 3:44 PM

Her homeliness is too distracting.

by Anonymousreply 18May 13, 2022 3:46 PM

I am waiting for the finale to be up, and then I will watch the whole season

by Anonymousreply 19May 13, 2022 3:48 PM

R18 Actually she’s completely without any vanity in this production and using it to her advantage as someone who’s survived a very violent crime and doesn’t care a fuck about her looks, clothes or upkeep.

by Anonymousreply 20May 13, 2022 3:54 PM

Never liked her. She's gross.

An amazing episode focused on Jamie Bell’s character’s backstory. He can look very attractive, but then very creepy with a shift of the light or turn of the head. Moss must have gotten the actress who plays Janine in THT the role in this and she is stunning, it definitely deserves an Emmy nomination and I hope she gets one. She does amazing work and deserves to breakout and get more recognition.

by Anonymousreply 23May 20, 2022 10:03 AM

Time travel is so lame.

by Anonymousreply 24May 20, 2022 10:08 AM

Why are all the time travel shows set in Chicago, what is it about the city that suggests that?

by Anonymousreply 25May 20, 2022 10:13 AM

I tried to read the book year sago and hated it but I actually like the series. Can't stand Elizabeth Moss so this latest episode where she hardly featured was the best by far.

by Anonymousreply 26May 20, 2022 10:40 AM

Jamie Bell does creepy surprisingly well. He was very good in the movie "Retreat" where he played a creepy, paranoid soldier.

by Anonymousreply 27May 20, 2022 10:48 AM

[quote]OP Most of them don’t have Apple TV. The same ones who whine about New York Times subscription rates.

R10, poverty as a reason for not having Apple TV? Or just a reason to dust off some snobbery and dispense it to your inferiors?

I like little about Apple TV but have the impression - quite possibly wrong - that its programming remains in a nascent stage and has a (too?) strong U.S. bent in actors, production, locations, etc. It's far less about subscription cost than awareness of the product catalogue and bent, for which I thank OP for something to keep in mind.

[quote]Jamie Bell does creepy surprisingly well.

Agreed R27. I think Bell has an arresting presence in nearly everything I've seen of his work. I don't know why he isn't more sought after for films and TV. I've watched things simply because he had a prominent role and always felt rewarded by seeing his work.

by Anonymousreply 28May 20, 2022 2:21 PM

Your programming remains in a nascent stage.

by Anonymousreply 29May 20, 2022 2:37 PM

I wonder if Bell’s original training as a dancer is the reason, just the way he uses his body and can convey much of his quieter roles (there’s a physicalities to many of his performances over the verbal) perhaps is what he’s giving to his acting over other actors?

by Anonymousreply 30May 20, 2022 2:59 PM

Can three people do a circle jerk?

by Anonymousreply 31May 20, 2022 4:21 PM

People are finally starting to realize that Elisabeth Moss is not just a Scientologist but a full blown, from birth, insane parents, Scientologist, OP

She’s a fucking clam, and it’s a huge disconnect from her personal life to her acting in one of the deepest shows about oppression and female misery and people have problems with it. And that New Yorker article was weird and creepy, just like her religion.

It’s unfortunate, because Peggy and that first season of Handmaid’s Tale are some of the best acting on TV ever. I won’t support her anymore though. She’s fucking nuts.

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2022 4:28 PM

Penultimate episode was so good. I can’t figure out what the end is going to be, but I have a feeling it’s going to somehow make sense and not have that fetal flaw that so many time travel works seem to fall into. There’s going to be a twist and it’s going to be magnificent!

by Anonymousreply 33May 27, 2022 6:42 AM

That's because that mossy, plain Jane is an L. Ron Hubbard succubus.

by Anonymousreply 34May 27, 2022 6:50 AM

No, and I refuse to watch a show about girls whose makeup isn’t matte enough!

by Anonymousreply 35May 27, 2022 6:52 AM

She was one of the Radium girls, that’s why she was shiny, her makeup was saturated with the stuff and she wasn’t matte at all, she glowed.

by Anonymousreply 36May 27, 2022 6:59 AM

Very satisfying conclusion, especially for the radium girl.

by Anonymousreply 37June 3, 2022 5:41 AM

Ugly as shit. And in a creepy cult. No thanks.
