Let's Play Desert Island Discs!

I love this program! I have been thinking about what selections I would pick.

1. Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto played by Augustine Hadelich. Probably my favorite piece of all time.

2. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. Pianist Lazar Berman, conducted by Claudio Abbado. It was the first record I ever bought.

3. Brahms' Symphony No. 1 with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Tokyo Philharmonic. von Karajan's last recording. Chills the first time I hard it.

4. Amarillo by Morning by George Strait. I am a Texan and this song will make me reminisce about my home land.

5. Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto. Pianist Glenn Gould with the American Philharmonic conducted by Leopold Stokowski.

6. "Un bel di vedremo" from Madama Butterfly. Sung by Leontyne Price. Butterfly was the first opera I ever saw and it is my favorite. Price really brings the sadness and pain out. It was between her and Callas.

7. Old Man River by Paul Robeson. What a voice. Have to have Robeson, he is very comforting.

8. Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 32 played by Anatol Ugorski. I first heard this on Alec Guinness' DID. Absolutely beautiful and gives a range of emotions.

Luxury: A supply of Samuel Adams beer to hold me over while I'm on the island.

Book: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. I have always wanted to read it. A nice long read.

What's Yours?

Nessum Dorma sung by Pavarotti was on the short list, but seemed a little cliche.

by Anonymousreply 1May 6, 2022 3:46 PM

Tchaikovsky's First piano concerto and Rach 2 played by Sviatoslav Richter, conducted by Karajan

Brahms 4, conducted by Furtwängler, with BPO

All Bach concertos and sonatas, played by S. Richter

Handel, Concerti Grossi, Karajan and BPO

Bach, Matthäus Passion, Nicholas Harnoncourt

Don Giovanni, Mozart, Giulini, Sutherland, Schwarzkopf, Alva

Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Abbado, Prey, Alva, Berganza

Carmen, Karajan, Baltsa, Karreras

The album Barcelona, Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe'

Book: Novels for Children by Erich Kästner

I really recommend War and Peace, it's an easy and captivating read, despite its size, and with many homoerotic moments. Would recommend Anna Karenina even more.

R2 Oooooooo Good choices! Especially Rach 2.

It is a desert island disc!

by Anonymousreply 5December 29, 2023 12:46 AM

I guess if you want to be lulled to death on a desert island these would be appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 6December 29, 2023 12:49 AM

I would definitely include “Eric Porter, Orchestre De Paris: Peter And The Wolf / Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra”

OP has the taste of a 18 year old discovering "culture" for the first time.

The ABBA Gold album is sufficient

by Anonymousreply 14December 29, 2023 1:20 AM

R19 you love Mahler too?

by Anonymousreply 20January 1, 2024 11:36 PM

I do, r20. I could have filled in the entire eight discs with Mahler symphonies, really.

by Anonymousreply 21January 1, 2024 11:38 PM

R21 I could have too, but I needed some light hearted stuff as well. Mahler 6 is my all time favorite though

by Anonymousreply 22January 1, 2024 11:40 PM

Macarena: Los Del Rio

Yes, r22, Mahler's Sixth Symphony certainly is magnificent. I've never heard Ozawa's version. I've been listening to Mahler, and classical music in general, since 1987, and I really got into buying different versions of Mahler. I found with the Sixth, though, that I only wanted to listen to Bernstein's first recording. Everyone else takes the first movement too slowly, and I would just turn on Bernstein instead.

Which is your favorite Second?

Why would one want that on a desert island especially with your lasagne?

by Anonymousreply 26January 2, 2024 12:40 AM

Gotta eat, r26. I can't think of a novel I'd want to read over and over, so I chose something useful.

by Anonymousreply 27January 2, 2024 12:42 AM

Thank you, R27.

by Anonymousreply 28January 2, 2024 12:45 AM

If I can only bring one it would be The White Album. Just an incredible amount of variety with really strong songwriting across the board. Even Ringo's offering "Don't Pass Me By" is fantastic. There's a song for every mood. It's just crazy how many genres they packed into that record. The fact that it's sort of all over the place and incohesive just makes it better to me, it's so raw and bold.

by Anonymousreply 29January 2, 2024 12:50 AM

why do you get to pick 8 albums but only one luxury item and one book?

that's stupid

by Anonymousreply 30January 2, 2024 12:53 AM

Because they’re typically not in disc form.

by Anonymousreply 31January 2, 2024 12:57 AM

well that's a stupid game, and i hate it.

by Anonymousreply 32January 2, 2024 1:01 AM

R25 I would highly recommend Ozawa/Boston cycle! 1-9 and the first movement of 10 are on Spotify if you want to listen. I really enjoyed Ozawa. It was more technical and not as dramatic as Bernstein. A few of the sopranos are Kiri Te Kawana, Marilyn Horne, Kathleen Battle, and Jessye Norman.

I would have to rate them 6, 9, 5, 2, 1, 7, 8, 4, and then 3.

What is your rating?
