Oh who cares about politics, it’s art. Great movie. Fun fact, the older gal Clint has the business lunch with is the mother of singer Jack Jones.

I don't know why I've never seen this. I love psycho thrillers. Was it a theateical release? Because of the clips I've seen, it's always looked cheaply made and TV movie-ish.
I guess Clint was a fledgling director at the time- known mostly for acting in spaghetti westerns- and maybe he couldn't entice big names yet?
At least it wasn't Joanne Worley and Arlene Golonka...

“Oh please, don't mention seafood.”

I think I must've seen it as a kid on the local re-run channel. It stood out, I never forgot it.
Later when I got into jazz singers it was always fun hearing Ella or whoever sing Misty.

It's been making the rounds on TV lately. I find my mind wandering, wondering how a DJ on a small, local radio station has the cash to live in that oceanfront home. The Mills character, a so-so artist, also has an amazing oceanfront home.
Jessica Walter was terrific in that role.

The bachelor pad is fantastic. Just sloppy enough, stylish as hell. Cool records, art, a little pond, stunning view. Looking at it, and Clint, and Carmel, make the movie quite the visual treat.

R8 My father left me that home. Unfortunately, I have to keep taking in roommates to maintain it.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 6, 2022 12:32 PM |
R7 Watch it again, on a nice big HD screen if you can. It's a good one. Fab ultra-70s California aesthetic, and holds up.

How affordable is Carmel these days? I imagine they might have a growing gay community.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 6, 2022 3:08 PM |
Carmel is very expensive.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 6, 2022 3:58 PM |
And deservedly so. The charm, beauty, easy sophistication of the place - just magic. If I could live anywhere, it would be there.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 6, 2022 5:17 PM |
It used to be much cheaper to live on the California coast. Eastwood moved to Carmel after making the film because he thought it was so beautiful, and he was part of the reason why it became the Montecito of its day (except even more beautiful).

Here's a question I have. After Evelyn slashes her wrists in Dave's house, he feels compelled to let her recuperate there, and stays with her to keep an eye on her. At one point, it's suggested she is about to seduce him again, despite everything that's happened. The next morning, Evelyn has stepped out, and the maid arrives to find Dave passed out on the sofa, surrounded by empties. Are we to infer he and Evelyn had themselves a party, or did he just drink himself to sleep in despair?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 6, 2022 5:23 PM |
I watched that when I was 14 or 15. It came on late-night TV; I was alone in the house (my parents let me stay in the house alone for the weekend). I was so terrified when it was over that I forced myself to watch an hour of some ludicrous comedy or sitcom to transition out of that terror before running to my bed.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 6, 2022 5:23 PM |
R19 I think he already lived there, and wanted to showcase the place. I may be wrong. I know LA was originally discussed as a setting. I'm so glad they went with Carmel, the movie is such a Valentine to the town. The nice thing about Carmel is how rich yet understated it is. No flash or vulgar architecture.

Jessica Walter was so good in everything. That beautiful, expressive face was amazing. She was one celebrity whose death really saddened me.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 6, 2022 5:31 PM |
Clint Eastwood really hit the genetic lotto. In his films of this timeframe you see his form pretty clearly. He was so lanky and well developed, and he moved so confidently on camera.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 6, 2022 5:37 PM |
I love that the film is a little weird, nonlinear, experimental. Not everyone loves the "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" interlude, nor the extended footage from the Monterey Jazz Festival. But I think these were very artful choices in and of themselves, and also work well in terms of the dynamics, pacing and momentum of the story.

I'm Donna Mills's shag!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 6, 2022 6:15 PM |
Clint felt Fatal Attraction ripped off his film.
Agree?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 7, 2022 4:21 AM |
R27 Kind of. But it was ripped off very well, with enough differences and once again two very strong leads.

Years ago I worked in the sales office at a hotel - we had the old fashioned phones with the buttons on the bottom. Every couple of weeks our reservations gal, Shirley, would call my line and in a throaty sexy voice, say “Play Misty For Me….” It was very funny at the time! ……. Oh and re the movie - that poor housekeeper!!!!

I kid you not, I JUST watched this film last Sunday with my parents. They love this movie.
Allow me to share my favorite scene…
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 7, 2022 5:27 AM |
That clip is STILL creepy!!!!

Housekeeper Birdie was portrayed by Miss Clarice Taylor, who enjoyed an impressive stage and film career. She appeared on The Cosby Show in her later years, playing Cliff's mother, Mrs. Huxtable. Miss Taylor resided in the theatrical mecca of Hell's Kitchen.
And, yes, Play Misty For Me remains a masterpiece.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 7, 2022 7:23 AM |
The film must have been far more impressive in theatres. On a home TV screen it doesn't jolt the viewer.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 7, 2022 8:35 AM |
I think it jolts the viewer because it is possible - I had a neighbor whose cat kept coming over to my house - the owner was a seemingly friendly young woman. She turned out to be bat s@@@ nuts. She scared the hell out of me - very Play Misty For Me - it is 10 years later -I live in a different town and the kitty is next to me as I type. - Sometimes it is the low key unstable crazies that are awful - like Evelyn.

Very few horror films scare me...but this one is scary, because it can be true. I love the setting....and his home, the natural beauty. I also like the movie, The Sandpipers for the setting alone, though that one isn't as good as this one. Great suspense and I still jump at certain scenes...even though I've already seen this many times. I just watched it on YouTube after reading this thread. A must- see if anyone hasn't seen it.

(Spoiler ahead) That scene where Jessica Walter’s character is punched through the plate glass window is very shocking, like some form of adrenaline crescendo. I wonder if audiences gasped when they saw it on the big screen. It’s pretty masterfully-edited, particularly in the way they engineered the sound of her screaming with a Doppler effect, timed with the falling body (a dummy).
The scene recalls a similar one in an older film called Dark Passage. The always awesome Agnes Moorehead plays a “pest” named Madge, who stalks and menaces a character played by Humphrey Bogart. This character also plunges through a plate glass window, and they use the same Doppler effect “falling” scream sound, yet it’s filmed in daylight and looks obviously like a rag doll tossed out the window. It’s still pretty cool.

I can’t find a good picture but Clarice Taylor looked so chic and cute in her scenes (when she wasn’t being brutally slashed) in her white shift with the orange sweater and dangly earrings and little fro.

Kino Lorber just released this on 4K. I bought it and am watching it now. It looks fantastic. I haven't seen the movie in years. It is great. Jessica Walters is wonderfully unhinged in it.
