Judgement at Nuremberg (1961)

Stanley Kramer's finest film.

The film holds no punches when depicting the Nazis or the Trials.

Terrific and eerie music by Ernest Gold.

Spencer Tracy gives the best performance of his career as Chief Judge Dan Haywood, the American.

Maximilian Schell is the passionate German lawyer, Hans Rolfe. Schell outperforms Tracy and rightfully deserved the Oscar.

Burt Lancaster plays the notorious Nazi leader defendant Dr. Ernst Janning.

Marlene Dietrich is riding high on her Witness for the Prosecution success.

Richard Widmark is solemn as the American prosecutor Col. Ted Lawson.

Judy Garland gives one of the best comebacks in film history. Her last great performance.

Montgomery Clift is great as a handicapped man.

The supporting cast includes sexy William Shatner, creepy Werner Klemperer, British thespian Ben Wright, and the reliable Edward Binns as an American Senator.

So sad

by Anonymousreply 1May 5, 2022 11:15 PM

Both Tracy and Lancaster deserved Oscars for this.

by Anonymousreply 2May 5, 2022 11:18 PM

The scene near the end with Marlene staring into space while ignoring the ringing phone is chilling. And sad. And heartbreaking. It’s all there on her face.

by Anonymousreply 3May 5, 2022 11:20 PM

Max is HOT (but the Bad guy) but HOT!

by Anonymousreply 4May 5, 2022 11:23 PM

R4 he was!

R3 You're right. She was such a talented actress.

Judy was really playing herself in this movie- a train wreck.

by Anonymousreply 5May 5, 2022 11:45 PM

Only three people love this film?

by Anonymousreply 6May 6, 2022 1:12 AM

A long-winded bore. Drastically cutting it would be a vast improvement. The Defiant Ones (1958) is probably Kramer's best film. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and Ship of Fools (1965) also suffer from overlength and the latter from bloated self-importance like Nuremberg.

by Anonymousreply 7May 6, 2022 1:58 AM

Kramer was always overdoing it, from The Defiant Ones up until Bless The Beasts and the Children.

by Anonymousreply 8May 6, 2022 2:00 AM

Um...everything OP wrote is wrong. This film is laborious. Clift and Garland overact like mad. Kramer failed them.

by Anonymousreply 9May 6, 2022 2:01 AM

It occasioned my all-time favorite Pauline Kael one-sentence description of a film: "All all-star concentration camp film, with Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift as special guest victims."

by Anonymousreply 10May 6, 2022 2:02 AM

R9 They why did Tracy, Schell, Clift, and Garland all get nominated for Oscars?

Why did Clift and Schell get nonmined for the more accurate BAFTA?

by Anonymousreply 11May 6, 2022 2:32 AM

William Shatner was HOT

by Anonymousreply 12May 6, 2022 2:34 AM

R11 due to the film's subject matter. Just like Ship of Fools and Don't Look up being Best Picture nominees.

by Anonymousreply 13May 6, 2022 2:37 AM

[quote] [R9] They why did Tracy, Schell, Clift, and Garland all get nominated for Oscars?

Lots of Oscar nominations mean the film MUST be of the very high quality, like "Titanic" and "Forrest Gump"!

by Anonymousreply 14May 6, 2022 2:45 AM

R14 No. Judgment at Nuremburg is a film with great acting.

Tracy, Schell, and Dietrich steal the film though.

by Anonymousreply 15May 6, 2022 2:19 PM

R11, do you really believe the Oscars are a barometer of film quality? It's a popularity contest. Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Julia Roberts have best actress Oscars. Come on.

by Anonymousreply 16May 6, 2022 5:37 PM

R16 But JAN is well acted? Granted, Garland is playing herself, a train wreck lol

by Anonymousreply 17May 6, 2022 9:48 PM

R17, even Monty Clift allegedly said Garland played the role all wrong.

by Anonymousreply 18May 7, 2022 12:53 AM

Hands down Judy should have ABSOLUTELY won the Oscar for that performance. Haven't see it in years, yet I can still remember her monologue. Now for me, when I remember a performance Years after that is greatness. Forgot that Schell, Lancaster 7 Widmark were even in the film. Judy was magnificent. Monty was great too, but Judy by far the best!

I watched the film last weekend. It is great. Dl is just bitching.

Schell really stands out.

by Anonymousreply 20May 29, 2022 10:24 PM

Regardless of the movie's merits, I think young people should see it because it demonstrates how much of the 50s and early 60s was about digesting WWII.

by Anonymousreply 21May 29, 2022 10:54 PM

R21 Agreed! I'm in my twenties and love films like this.

by Anonymousreply 22May 30, 2022 12:46 AM

I'm watching it for the first time today. Schell is HOT!

by Anonymousreply 23June 25, 2022 4:55 PM

Perfect film

by Anonymousreply 24August 17, 2023 10:44 PM

[quote]Her last great performance.

I Could Go On Singing had some fantastic moments.

by Anonymousreply 25August 17, 2023 10:46 PM

Anne Frank’s diary (and the subsequent play and film) and the capture of Adolf Eichmann had reignited interest in Germany’s role in WW II and the Holocaust. This film was perfectly timed. But wasn’t it a television movie first?

by Anonymousreply 26August 17, 2023 10:56 PM

Outstanding film.

by Anonymousreply 27August 17, 2023 11:02 PM

R26 I am not sure, but there was a remake with Alec Baldwin and Jill Hennessy in the early 2000's

by Anonymousreply 28August 17, 2023 11:04 PM

I can't remember what happens with Max Schell's character. Is he a bad guy?

by Anonymousreply 29August 17, 2023 11:35 PM

Schell plays a defense attorney, not really a villain.

by Anonymousreply 30August 18, 2023 4:13 AM

It's JUDGMENT, OP

by Anonymousreply 31August 18, 2023 4:16 AM

Maximillian Schell is perfect in this

by Anonymousreply 32August 18, 2023 4:52 AM

It was a remake of

Judy said any time to had to face the executives at MGM she got too emotional. Perhaps doing the same as she does in the film, stuttering and screaming Stop it!

by Anonymousreply 34August 18, 2023 5:08 AM

If you turn the volume down you really wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Judy's performance in this and any episode of her tv show that ran around the same time.

by Anonymousreply 35August 18, 2023 5:28 AM

Judy's last great performance before her death

by Anonymousreply 36August 18, 2023 2:14 PM

R35 I must have the scene where Irene sings.

by Anonymousreply 37August 18, 2023 3:57 PM

Agree that the performances of Judy and Monty were excellent. I don't believe she is playing herself. Projection always cheapens a performance. Judy was a real actress. Tracy is great but OP needs to see more Tracy films- not his best. Schell didn't deserve an Oscar. The film is long and boring - and overwrought. Marlene was great in her bit performance. From " Touch of Evil" " Witness" and this film she's great with tiny roles she could make her own. Kramer was so " woke" for his time- that's why his movie have no staying power- just the performances.

by Anonymousreply 38August 18, 2023 6:24 PM

I knew Judy was a good dramatic actress when I saw her in THE CLOCK with Robert Walker. Vincente was able to make a real actress out of her.

by Anonymousreply 39August 18, 2023 6:52 PM

Ernest Gold was married to Marni Nixon. Their son was ‘70s/‘80s pop singer Andrew Gold (“Thank You for Being a Friend”).

by Anonymousreply 40August 18, 2023 8:15 PM

[quote]Vincente was able to make a real actress out of her.

Judy was an intuitive actress, r39. She was just as good, dramatically, in Oz.

by Anonymousreply 41August 18, 2023 8:21 PM

Whoever had the overwhelming task of getting 3 notorious alkies like Clift, Garland and Tracy to the set on time and sober deserves a special Oscar award.

by Anonymousreply 42August 18, 2023 9:43 PM

R42 Four, Darling

by Anonymousreply 43August 18, 2023 10:15 PM

[quote] The scene near the end with Marlene staring into space while ignoring the ringing phone is chilling. And sad. And heartbreaking. It’s all there on her face.

It's the only moment in the film that I find memorable in cinematic terms.

by Anonymousreply 44August 18, 2023 10:22 PM

Who knew that Judy Garland could fake a German accent better than Monty Clift?

by Anonymousreply 45August 18, 2023 10:23 PM

I always found the American stars playing Germans very distracting and hard to suspend disbelief for. I think the film would have been so much better with real Germans speaking German.

by Anonymousreply 46August 18, 2023 10:39 PM

Stanley Kramer meant well enough, but he was not always the subtlest of directors. I noticed that in ON THE BEACH. The final scene is effective enough, but then he ruins it with the music.

by Anonymousreply 47August 19, 2023 1:05 AM

Fuck you, R46!

by Anonymousreply 48August 19, 2023 2:26 AM

Conrad Veidt, if he were still alive, would have been excellent in the Burt Lancaster role.

by Anonymousreply 49August 19, 2023 3:03 PM

It should be remade with Germans as the Germans. I think it would be a relevant subject to today's issues.

by Anonymousreply 50August 19, 2023 3:11 PM

Judy is wonderful in The Clock, but she hams it up in her big scene in this. She always overdid the emotion unless she was really reined in by a strong director.

by Anonymousreply 51August 19, 2023 3:40 PM

What I remember about Monty's scene is the way he uses his hands.
