Judgement at Nuremberg (1961)
Stanley Kramer's finest film.
The film holds no punches when depicting the Nazis or the Trials.
Terrific and eerie music by Ernest Gold.
Spencer Tracy gives the best performance of his career as Chief Judge Dan Haywood, the American.
Maximilian Schell is the passionate German lawyer, Hans Rolfe. Schell outperforms Tracy and rightfully deserved the Oscar.
Burt Lancaster plays the notorious Nazi leader defendant Dr. Ernst Janning.
Marlene Dietrich is riding high on her Witness for the Prosecution success.
Richard Widmark is solemn as the American prosecutor Col. Ted Lawson.
Judy Garland gives one of the best comebacks in film history. Her last great performance.
Montgomery Clift is great as a handicapped man.
The supporting cast includes sexy William Shatner, creepy Werner Klemperer, British thespian Ben Wright, and the reliable Edward Binns as an American Senator.

Both Tracy and Lancaster deserved Oscars for this.

The scene near the end with Marlene staring into space while ignoring the ringing phone is chilling. And sad. And heartbreaking. It’s all there on her face.

R3 You're right. She was such a talented actress.
Judy was really playing herself in this movie- a train wreck.

A long-winded bore. Drastically cutting it would be a vast improvement. The Defiant Ones (1958) is probably Kramer's best film. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and Ship of Fools (1965) also suffer from overlength and the latter from bloated self-importance like Nuremberg.

Kramer was always overdoing it, from The Defiant Ones up until Bless The Beasts and the Children.

Um...everything OP wrote is wrong. This film is laborious. Clift and Garland overact like mad. Kramer failed them.

It occasioned my all-time favorite Pauline Kael one-sentence description of a film: "All all-star concentration camp film, with Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift as special guest victims."

R9 They why did Tracy, Schell, Clift, and Garland all get nominated for Oscars?
Why did Clift and Schell get nonmined for the more accurate BAFTA?

R11 due to the film's subject matter. Just like Ship of Fools and Don't Look up being Best Picture nominees.

[quote] [R9] They why did Tracy, Schell, Clift, and Garland all get nominated for Oscars?
Lots of Oscar nominations mean the film MUST be of the very high quality, like "Titanic" and "Forrest Gump"!

R14 No. Judgment at Nuremburg is a film with great acting.
Tracy, Schell, and Dietrich steal the film though.

R11, do you really believe the Oscars are a barometer of film quality? It's a popularity contest. Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Julia Roberts have best actress Oscars. Come on.

Hands down Judy should have ABSOLUTELY won the Oscar for that performance. Haven't see it in years, yet I can still remember her monologue. Now for me, when I remember a performance Years after that is greatness. Forgot that Schell, Lancaster 7 Widmark were even in the film. Judy was magnificent. Monty was great too, but Judy by far the best!

Regardless of the movie's merits, I think young people should see it because it demonstrates how much of the 50s and early 60s was about digesting WWII.

Anne Frank’s diary (and the subsequent play and film) and the capture of Adolf Eichmann had reignited interest in Germany’s role in WW II and the Holocaust. This film was perfectly timed. But wasn’t it a television movie first?

Agree that the performances of Judy and Monty were excellent. I don't believe she is playing herself. Projection always cheapens a performance. Judy was a real actress. Tracy is great but OP needs to see more Tracy films- not his best. Schell didn't deserve an Oscar. The film is long and boring - and overwrought. Marlene was great in her bit performance. From " Touch of Evil" " Witness" and this film she's great with tiny roles she could make her own. Kramer was so " woke" for his time- that's why his movie have no staying power- just the performances.

I always found the American stars playing Germans very distracting and hard to suspend disbelief for. I think the film would have been so much better with real Germans speaking German.

Stanley Kramer meant well enough, but he was not always the subtlest of directors. I noticed that in ON THE BEACH. The final scene is effective enough, but then he ruins it with the music.

Judy is wonderful in The Clock, but she hams it up in her big scene in this. She always overdid the emotion unless she was really reined in by a strong director.

Unlike some of the above. I think the most overacting goes to Schell and Widmark. Loved Garland and Dietrich. Clift overacting was fine but in line with the part.
Loved the nazi housekeeper.

Hammiest performances from best actors. Tracy overdoes folksy. Schell shouts, Lancaster underplays to the point of tedium aware he’s part of a “prestige”film. Dietrich sleepwalks. Garland and Peck overwrought. Shatner looks good and acts impeccably
