DL's Favorite Hollywood Republican actress

Which classic actress do we love most despite her Republican views?

I left out Celeste Holm and Lucile Watson since they were never leading ladies.

by Anonymousreply 35June 15, 2022 11:23 PM

Gene is my favorite. It helps that she at least voted for JFK.

Loretta is my least favorite, both as an actress and as a person.

by Anonymousreply 1May 4, 2022 5:19 AM

My predictions are that Barb will win by a longshot. Roz will be a close 2nd. Shirley will probably amass a lot of votes as well.

by Anonymousreply 2May 4, 2022 5:21 AM

I believe Jane Wyman was a Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 3May 4, 2022 5:21 AM

Wasn't Jane was married to Ronnie?

by Anonymousreply 4May 4, 2022 5:24 AM

Wyman and Colbert both spoke at a 1944 Democratic National Committee broadcast to "urge the public to re-elect FDR".

R4 yes. When he was a Dem. He changed parties for uggo Nancy.

by Anonymousreply 6May 4, 2022 5:27 AM

Wyman has been quoted as saying she's always been a registered Republican. She also said her marriage with Reagan ended because of their differing political views since he was a Democrat back then. He switched parties but I've never heard anything to indicate she did.

by Anonymousreply 7May 4, 2022 5:29 AM

Claudette Colbert was also a staunch Republican. She was a Margaret Thatcher supporter too.

R5 FDR was popular enough that many Republicans voted for him too. Clark Gable is a good example as someone who voted for him in spite of identifying as a Republican.

by Anonymousreply 8May 4, 2022 5:33 AM

Uh, that's why she's on the list R8.

by Anonymousreply 9May 4, 2022 5:35 AM

How DARE you forget me.

R10 C-list actresses were not under consideration. Anyway, she was terrified of Jane Wyman so she'd probably appreciate not sharing a poll with her.

by Anonymousreply 11May 4, 2022 5:37 AM

They shared my pole!

by Anonymousreply 12May 4, 2022 5:45 AM

A whole raft of the greatest actresses ever in that list. Who can Deplorable Hollywood claim now?

by Anonymousreply 13May 4, 2022 5:50 AM

Loretta Young and Celeste Holm played holier-than-thou nuns in Come to the Stable. They were basically just playing themselves but in nuns' habits.

by Anonymousreply 14May 4, 2022 6:23 AM

Lillian Gish is missing.

by Anonymousreply 15June 13, 2022 1:58 AM

What are we, chopped liver?

by Anonymousreply 16June 13, 2022 2:00 AM

What about Patricia Heaton?

by Anonymousreply 17June 13, 2022 2:01 AM

Susan Hayward was a Republican? That's disappointing but it does explain all the similarities between her and Barbara Stanwyck.

by Anonymousreply 18June 13, 2022 2:01 AM

Nancy wasn't a Leading Lady, but she was the Blowjob Queen.

by Anonymousreply 19June 13, 2022 2:03 AM

Greer Garson was a Republican?

by Anonymousreply 20June 13, 2022 2:04 AM

Agnes Moorehead being a Republican was the biggest surprise. Especially considering how "close" she was with Debbie Reynolds who was anything but a Republican.

by Anonymousreply 21June 13, 2022 2:04 AM

R20 She was married to a rich Texas oilman. At one point, she was even asked to run for office.

Gene Tierney, fellow Republican, was also married to a rich Texas oilman. He was an ex-husband of Hedy Lamarr, but I've never heard anything about her political views.

by Anonymousreply 22June 13, 2022 2:13 AM

Haha at no Gloria Swanson.

by Anonymousreply 23June 13, 2022 2:15 AM

Loretta Young gave a perfect performance in The Bishop's Wife. She was the epitome of class, grace, and elegance.

by Anonymousreply 24June 13, 2022 2:17 AM

Kathryn Grayson, Ann Miller, and Cyd Charisse - MGM musical stars from the 40s/50s - were all Republicans as well.

by Anonymousreply 25June 13, 2022 2:19 AM

Being a Republican meant something very different back then. Please don’t police the past through a woke joke lens.

by Anonymousreply 26June 13, 2022 2:20 AM

We need to remember that Republicans were not radical right wing crazies back then. They just tended to be the more monied “haves”.

r27 E.g. Nixon advised Trump to enter politics, and Nixon was an important part of the Eisenhower administration., 'the terrible ew', who was totally unqualified as a military man, yet became very important in military and helped destroy the German people with ethnic developments and e.g. let over a million or so German prisoners of war starve, die of thirst, eat others, be shot, killed etc after the war in Rheinwiesen concentration camp. Franklin boys scandal, under the good old Republican party, and that was something that was reported on, partially because times became more modern and transparent, most other things before that, there wasn't any reporting going on back then, just some of it came to light several years later, and of course usually connected with people trying to undermine the scholars, journalists, victims, witnesses, etc. .

And e.g. the war on the poor and on the social safety net from the corporations and oligarchs from the 60s onwards and becoming very big and more obvious from the 80s partially through the all around corporate and 1% controlled Reagan administration has been certainly more extreme and ruthless than anything the Republican party and its controllers have done in the last 10-15 years. Trump is also quite influenced by American businessmen of the 1910s, 20s, 50s and so, and tries to emulate them and is somewhat of a caricature of them, e.g. his pimp-, horse-meat seller grandfather, who founded the family fortune, also through rental shark. His KKK grand wizard, as well slumlord father from also better times of the Republican party was nicer and better and more moral, of course, but still.

by Anonymousreply 28June 13, 2022 3:40 PM

Republicans from the 1950s shouldn't be conflated with today's MAGAtards. That's offensive to them.

by Anonymousreply 29June 13, 2022 3:45 PM

People who keep saying Republicans used to have integrity clearly aren't familiar with the Red Scare, McCarthyism, Watergate, or the Reagan era. The Trump-era of today only exists because of decades of build-up.

by Anonymousreply 30June 13, 2022 9:39 PM

Barbara Stanwyck is winning? Are there that many elderdykes on the DL?

by Anonymousreply 31June 14, 2022 5:04 AM

Barbara Stanwyck is a DL fav, right after Judy, Joan, and Bette.

by Anonymousreply 32June 15, 2022 6:14 AM

Similarly, Loretta Young and Greer Garson both are wildly unpopular on here so it doesn't surprise me that they're the bottom two (along with Claudette Colbert who I also don't hear much about on here).

by Anonymousreply 33June 15, 2022 6:15 AM

Gene Tierney

"Laura" "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" "Leave Her to Heaven"

by Anonymousreply 34June 15, 2022 9:49 AM

R34 Besides those three, which are all classics, I'd also include two of her films from 1946: Dragonwyck and The Razor's Edge.

She's absolutely lovely as a gothic heroine reminiscent of Rebecca and Jane Eyre (even if the novel is not nearly as remembered these days) and Vincent Price consistently made a great screen partner for her.

As for The Razor's Edge, Gene and Tyrone Power made for one of the most stunning onscreen pairings. If anyone loved her as Ellen in Leave Her to Heaven, they'll similarly love her here as an amoral, icy heroine responsible for Anne Baxter's suicide. 1946 was such a packed year for female performances that Gene was unfairly snubbed at the Oscars (of course so was Joan for Humoresque). Nowadays, The Razor's Edge isn't as well-remembered as The Best Years of Our Lives but it was only second in box office.
