Why do young lesbians like "queer" better

Beanie Feldstein and Ariana De Bose both go by "queer"

Why?

by Anonymousreply 16May 3, 2022 12:39 PM

Because they aren’t really lesbians?

by Anonymousreply 1May 3, 2022 7:40 AM

Because they're cowards.

by Anonymousreply 2May 3, 2022 7:42 AM

Because they're spineless traitors and are afraid of rattling the woke twitter mob, so they'd rather deny who they really are.

by Anonymousreply 3May 3, 2022 7:43 AM

It's not just lesbians.

There are gay men coming out as "members of the LGBTQIA+ community".

by Anonymousreply 4May 3, 2022 7:53 AM

Because 'lesbian' is not a very pretty word and nobody likes it. It's actually 'sapphics' now, not queer. Goes for both gay and bisexual women.

by Anonymousreply 5May 3, 2022 8:23 AM

I'm not young nor a lesbian and i like queer better

by Anonymousreply 6May 3, 2022 8:31 AM

I've actually noticed lesbians defining themselves as 'gay' a lot more, so I don't think its all one way.

by Anonymousreply 7May 3, 2022 8:32 AM

People themselves decide what they want to be called or how they wish to be referred to, very simple. It doesn't bother me at all. The terminology seems to be constantly changing anyway...

by Anonymousreply 8May 3, 2022 8:55 AM

Queer is more inclusive.

by Anonymousreply 9May 3, 2022 8:57 AM

Young lesbians don't like "queer" better. Those two are not allowed to say they're lesbians (or bisexual) because they're in show biz, and in show biz it's not permitted to say that you're lesbian, gay or bisexual (unless you're a gay male character actor, who this fulfils an "artistic" stereotype). You have to say some crap such as "I fall on love with people" or "sexuality is fluid" or "I'm a member of the LGBTQIA++ community", i.e. something non-committal, like "queer".

by Anonymousreply 10May 3, 2022 8:59 AM

*who thus fulfils...

*in love with people...

I'm glad someone asked this question; I was confused too.

by Anonymousreply 12May 3, 2022 9:00 AM

r10 It's not that they aren't allowed to say but more like most non-conservatives (gays & allies and so on) in show biz are very much pro-LGBTQIA+/-queer/-intersectional/-inclusive ideology themselves.

by Anonymousreply 13May 3, 2022 10:26 AM

Partly that r13, but actresses who want to play major roles can't really come out as specifically lesbian or even bisexual. Look at someone like Sarah Paulson, who everyone knows only as having relationships with women, and she's still a "it's all fluid" type.

British singer Emil Sande recently revealed that she's in a relationship with a woman, but she'd never say she's lesbian/bisexual (she was previously married to a man), instead it's about "finding love" and "falling in love with whoever feels right".

Yes, the above two are not particularly young (Beanie and Ariana aren't particularly young either), but it's indicative of how actresses, singers, etc. do anything they can to avoid saying they're lesbian/gay/bisexual, even when they're openly in a relationship with another woman.

by Anonymousreply 14May 3, 2022 10:51 AM

Why should an individual's sexuality be "inclusive", r9? Are you suggesting that by saying she's "queer", Beanie is showing that she's inclusive to everyone when it comes to sex/relationships - men, women, transwomen, non-binaries?

by Anonymousreply 15May 3, 2022 10:53 AM

r14 'Can't really come out as specifically lesbian' (or gay) is one thing - I understand the desire to have the door and options as wide as possible without getting typecasted - but the situation like theirs is completely another. They're already, proudly out as currently being in same-sex relationships.

That totally makes them 'absolutely not heterosexual'. The only things that remain are either bisexual or lesbian/gay (=homosexual). If they don't want to limit themselves as homosexual, fine; the only thing they can call themselves is being bisexual. Everything else is bullshit; that's why those LGBs who use the queer 'identity' (sexual orientation? there are only three) are totally into and promote this ideology.
