Samantha Sang of 'Emotion' fame giving it all she's got on Australian TV in the 80s. Thoughts?
Samantha Sang is not the real name.

R1, it's Cheryl Gray but she's used the name Samantha Sang professionally since the Late 60s. The name change came about at the suggestion of (Bee Gees manager) Robert Stigwood, who was also managing her at the time.
Under her real name she had some early success in her homeland of Australia. The biggest hit being the Tony Hatch/Jackie Trent penned 'You Made Me What I Am' in 1967.

[quote] Samantha Sang SINGS 'A House Is Not A Home'!
Cheryl Gray BAWLS 'A House Is Not A Home'!
Like Streisand on steroids; all rather over-intense.

Cheryl wasn't pretty.

Samantha used a similar vocal technique to Donna Summer on her "Emotion" era recordings and even at the beginning of this rendition of 'A House Is Not A Home'. Her natural singing voice is a Streisand/Musical Theater type belt. But (like Donnna Summer) she frequently used a "Baby-Talk" singing style on some songs. It's interesting and I like it.

She’s way more powerful than I anticipated. She kinda reminds me of Julie Budd on some notes.
I had only ever heard her sing in that baby voice on Emotion.

R8, I'm assuming that either her voice was too big for Pop music and she was advised to "tone it down" to something more commercial. And/Or producers were trying to make her sound like a Female Barry Gibb, during a time in which the Bee Gees were the hottest musical act in the world. Regardless, her US releases only hint at how powerful her voice was. When listening to her pre-'Emotion' recordings, it's obvious that Cheryl/Samantha was a Streisand-styled belter.
Samantha had a Euro hit in 1969 with the Barry & Maurice Gibb-penned 'The Love Of A Woman'. At the time, both The Bee Gees & herself were managed by Robert Stigwood. She uses her belting style throughout the recording. She later remade the song for her "Emotion" album but IMO it wasn't as good.

She’s channeling a little bit of Shirley Bassey, too.

I don't know why she needs to wail like that.
Australians had nothing to wail about. They were prosperous and healthy back in those days.

A song about an empty, loveless house needs a more delicate touch.

R9, she reminds me of Bette Midler there.

Cheryl don't seem very delicate. She's as delicate as a fire-engine truck or an Ethel Zimmerman.
