First Class Upgrade vs. $1200 Unrestricted Flight Credit?
Which was the better deal?
I took a flight on American Airlines yesterday, and we couldn't leave because the flight was "too heavy."
So they asked for 9 volunteers to stay over night in Phoenix and fly out the next morning.
They would put you up in a hotel over night, provide transportation and meal vouchers, as well as a $1200 unrestricted flight credit.
The minute I heard "$1200 flight credit," I was like HELL YES.
But on the other hand, I had already been given a First Class upgrade, and was sitting in First Class drinking a beer when they made the announcement.
I thought the offer would be gone when I heard people dinging their call buttons. The first five or six were easy, but the last three or four took a while to get. Then it stopped on number eight, and they kept asking and looking around.
I was so tempted!
Finally, someone rang their bell, and it was done.
Did I make a mistake? I really feel like I should have taken the offer, but I was already settled into First Class, and I don't often get upgrades. I also didn't want to be stuck in Phoenix over night.
Oh, well.

Domestic first class is a joke nowadays; what do you get, a free plastic cup of sparkling wine and a slightly plusher seat? I don't think you even get free WiFi. The $1200 credit was the right decision.

The fact you were considering means you're time isn't that valuable.
However, all in all, I would have kept the upgrade and likely kick myself for a few months over the flight credit.

I purposely chose a Saturday to fly home, because I wanted to get home on Saturday night, and then have all day Sunday to rest for work on Monday. Which is exactly what I'm doing now.
I would probably still be in the air right now, if I had taken the credit.

I am totally kicking myself, because that's like a free trip to Europe or multiple domestic flights!
It also sucks because I'm usually stuck back in coach, but this is one of the few times I got an upgrade.
If I were in coach, you had better believe I would have rang that call button.

That's exactly what I would have done all night.
Gone on Grindr and look for a hook up.
It really could have been a win-win-win.

If you could turn back time...

Count your blessings you're safely home and can rest today.
You also don't have to endure a long flight back in steerage, probably in a middle seat and, possibly, next to a land whale or someone straight from the 'People of Walmart' website.
Hotels, restaurants, and ground transportation are so expensive these days that, unless you were planning to visit family or friends with your flight credits, you would have easily spent a lot more than $1200 on your 'free' trips.

How did you get the upgrade, OP? Did they just randomly pick you or did you have to spend miles to get it? How long a flight was it? These factor into the decision.

How much do you weigh? If you are a great big fat person, you should ask for more as you'll help them make that weight number.
(This will be a new US flying problem - planes to heavy because all the American sows.)

That's unusual for a commercial flight. Were there a lot of overweight passengers? Because most aircraft don't come close to the weight limit even if every seat is taken.

I generally take the view there's no amount of free money that's worth tuning down.
Or more simply: if you saw a dollar lying on the sidewalk, would you just walk by?

I have Concierge on American. It gets you fuckall domestically.
You should have taken the unrestricted flight credit.
When the plane crashes, you're all going to die anyway.
First class burns just as efficiently as coach.

Yes R15, buy it's not really free money, there's some cost to it. To use your analogy, what if the dollar lying on the sidewalk was buried beneath some garbage and you had to dig through it to retrieve the dollar? You would have to decide if it's worth that time and effort.

Is it really, R14?
Then I feel even worse not going for the credit, because that makes it a rare occurrence, which is probably why they offered such a generous credit.
Honestly, I'm really regretting it now because I can think of all the places that I could have visited, using the $1200.
