As a young man, Madonna was my wakeup call to the bullshit of celebrity. I got off her train many years ago when I realised it was all a tragic con.

I used to worship her too. She no longer inspires. She's pathetic nowadays. I can't believe it's the same person.

She's too rich to be sectioned but that is what she needs if we genuinely love our elders, which we don't, we won't, and we shouldn't.
She's a mess.

Clearly. And yet she ages.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 1, 2022 7:21 AM |
Yes, she’s a known alcoholic and opioid addiction is now rumored. Her bathroom is full of prescription bottles. She’s in video screaming how much pain she’s in and she needs to take something. Her daughter wrote about her oxy taking. Madonna even said she prefers opioids on Jimmy Fallon. She’s in serious trouble. She’s been nuts for years but that broken hip really destroyed her. She’s always smoking joints and drinking. She’s a bloated mess.

Last chapter of a no-talent.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 1, 2022 7:23 AM |
You’d think she would have transitioned into cool older celeb like so many of the Hollywood icons she copied. Instead she’s regressed into a child. There was no reason she had to turn into this. There are a ton of women in their 60s who people consider cool and sexy and they didn’t resort to this nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 1, 2022 7:23 AM |
She’s in MJ territory. She’s barely recognizable.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 1, 2022 7:23 AM |
She attained vast power by marketing her sexuality.
Now she's older that power is evaporating and she can't cope.
The way out is to stop focussing on sex and self gratification and to look to something bigger and more profound. She has the resources to throw herself into something like philanthropy. That's the way out.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 1, 2022 7:24 AM |

She's not just fat, she's sloppy, which just seems so out of character for the old (well, young) Madonna. For a while I thought she might just be trolling now with all of these stunts -- kind of a punk act to really piss people off and "empower" herself, but no... She's just a fat, drunken (and then some) slob. Even her rehearsal video is ridiculous. How does she see herself? Is she seriously this delusional? I wonder how this will end for her. Not well.

She looks awful and moves like a little old lady and she's clearly delusional. But what are you all seeing that points to Madonna be being very drunk and/or high? Performers under bright lights onstage always have tiny pupils.
I wouldn't think she'd be able to dance around (however ungracefully) if she were truly off her tits. When I think publicly drunk, I remember people like Johnny Depp and Peter O'Toole stumbling around and slurring and weaving from side to side even while trying to stand still.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 1, 2022 1:07 PM |
She really has no one in her life who gives a shit about her.

I doubt she's drunk or high, but her moves are ungainly and costume unflattering. Especially in those bits when she's in front of the tall, leggy women dancers. And it does appear as if she'd developing a hunch back.

R81 same with Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, and Whitney Houston before they died. No one remembers them or cares about them anymore obviously.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 1, 2022 2:15 PM |
Her main gimmick throughout her life has been exploitation of others and burned every bridge she's ever crossed. . . y'all just finally have an undeniable physical representation of the monster behind the curtain.
She's just laughable now... which is why so many more feel pity for her. All she has left are grifters that want to use her as much as she wants to use them. And I'd even wager she's not as out of sorts as some people believe.. that she'd be willing to accept the attention of being a clown than to have no attention at all. She thrives on being a disruption. . . just more hamfisted than say Courtney Love.
Madge was always a trainwreck... she has never once switched tracks.
She's really no different than other leathery old upper class italian fraus with too much money and too much time on their hands.

Very Anna Nicole. I wish she would remove butt implants and find a good stylist. I doubt she would listen to anyone though.

She has arthritis which could explain some of the heavy-footed lumbering. Opiates are not recommended for the condition but often prescribed. She's 5 years younger than me and she's at the tail end of being able to accomplish even this freakish performance.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | May 1, 2022 3:03 PM |
[quote]And I'd even wager she's not as out of sorts as some people believe.. that she'd be willing to accept the attention of being a clown than to have no attention at all.
I have to agree with this as well. I also think she gradually dropped the control freakishness that dominated her for so many years. If anything, I think this is the closest to her not giving two fucks that she's ever been.
As much as I liked her music for so many years, she always came off as humorless and uptight in her interviews. I never got the sense that she was much fun to be around, nor really knew how to have a good time. But looking at her instagram pics and seeing videos of her with her family, it does seem like she's mellowed a bit and learned to enjoy herself.

Honey, she had five young people sit and watch her latest tour disaster and tell them how inspired they were by it. She hasn’t mellowed at all. She’s still up her own fake ass and has no sense of humor.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 1, 2022 3:27 PM |
Madonna was not always humorless in interviews--at least not until after the early 10s. Even during the Confessions era, I watched an interview of her on some British show and she was actually really good at poking fun at herself. This clip makes me laugh.

How can you see her pupils op? 🕶
by Anonymous | reply 100 | May 1, 2022 3:56 PM |
R91 I say she has arthritis because of a photo that made the rounds years ago (2006) when she emerged from a drugstore in London carrying a transparent bag with arthritis medication clearly visible. My first thought was wtf why is a drugstore using transparent bags but of course the chatter was about Madonna showing signs of age. Most people were sympathetic though, she hadn't yet alienated everyone including her son.
I realize I sounded like an insider when I made that post, ooops. Too lazy to look for the image but this link refers to it. Also, she had "regenerative" surgery on her knee recently, the cartilage is gone.

At least she is wearing color. For the past few yeas, all you ever see her in is drab black while on stage.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | May 1, 2022 4:09 PM |
Gotta say, I fuckin love this, as sad as it is it’s also fascinating seeing her go off the rails. Like I always say, I wonder what Liz Rosenberg must think when these videos and stories cross her radar.

Her hip and knee problems couldn't have been helped by having that giant ass installed.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | May 1, 2022 4:15 PM |
I really don't see the point of performing if you're just going to sing along to a backing track and your live voice is barely audible. I think it's worse than lip syncing. At least in the past her lip syncing could be excused because she'd be dancing all the time.
This is sad to see. I've been a fan in the past. I've trashed her in recent years because I thought she was still capable of delivering the greatness she did before. I don't think she is anymore.

R28 Mae West had a lot more dignity, are you fucking kidding me? Clearly you never saw “Sexette” where they pretended she wasn’t 800 years old.
She’s no different from Mae West or Peggy Lee, who looked like a nightmare in a wheelchair towards the end with a bad facelift and that white wig. She looked like Danny Devito when he dressed up as Andy Warhol in Its Always Sunny.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | May 1, 2022 4:16 PM |
It's heartbreaking. She hasn't made a good album in 17 years. She no longer pushes the dial on pop cultural and sexual politics. Sometimes it's just better to go out with dignity. She should pull a Garbo rather than a Desmond.

In all honesty, I think Ray Of Light was her last true great album from start to finish, and the end of the classic Madonna era. Music and Confessions had moments of greatness, but as albums, they were uneven as a whole.
Once she married for a second time, and moved to England, I knew a few major fans of hers who started to rapidly lose interest. And they haven't been swayed back since.

Agreed, but I would argue she revealed that monster long ago in Truth or Dare. I think some people thought she was hamming it up for the camera and wasn’t as bad as she sometimes appeared in that movie.

I wonder what her 4 adopted African children think. I always found it odd that she adopted 4 of them after having 2 kids. She never seemed like the type who would be a good mother to begin with and then suddenly she had 6 kids. Should have stopped after Lourdes. That being said, she hopefully has good nannies raising the younger kids so they’re probably fine. They must find her quite disturbing.
I used to think she was so hot. What a mess.

I haven't read the entire thread so apologies in advance if I repeat. I have seen so many threads on Madonna over the last few years here on DL and I hardly read them. I don't even know why I am reading this one. Like others, I just find the descent into wherever she is heading pretty awful to watch frankly. I remember when she first came out as this pop sensation and she was great. So fresh, attractive, great tunes, and always looking to re-invent herself. She was not boring.
Now, she's uncognizable. You have to have to be pretty spaced out to go up on stage and behave like you have no decorum, no self-respect and not only that you are essentially "desecrating" your reputation, everything you built up over the years. The excessive plastic surgery is just another symptom of the internal turmoil (drugs, booze, menopause, whatever). She's not that old. She'll be 64 in August - that is still relatively young. Way too young to be heading in such a downard spiral. What baffles me is she used to have such discipline. Diet. Exercise. Food. etc. Now this car accident.
She reminds me kind of what it is going on with J.Old right now. J.Lo will be 53 in July and she's another one who is playing out some serious desperation in the media with Ben Affleck.
What is it that makes these otherwise smart women lose it. Completely?
by Anonymous | reply 138 | May 1, 2022 7:36 PM |
Poor dear looks like Adore Delano on a bad night.
It's ironic that the take on Madonna throughout her whole career was her uncanny ability to read the zeitgeist and transform herself into something relevant. Now she obviously doesn't have enough self-awareness to realize she's in no shape to perform in public. It's a sad descent from Queen of Pop to Baby Jane Ciccone.

I'm guessing that the combination of the Brit Awards fall and years of dancing, in addition to the mental strain of the divorce contributed to the Madonna we have now.
She will never headline a big world tour again. If she does, it will be a disaster or never happen like MJ's.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | May 1, 2022 8:32 PM |
[r138] I agree
by Anonymous | reply 147 | May 1, 2022 8:43 PM |
r145 It's quite probable -- investment wise, people are more apt to come to see the wreck than a reboot. So, as this, while it might hurt her legacy in the longterm... it's bringing in "reality" money even without a formal show. She's stays longer in the public eye and we're talking about her. Both her and J.Lo run afoul that they're both more performance artists more than singers. They're not the type you pay to see to just sing.
And if they can't manage it (honestly, more of theme should take note of how Mylene or even Celine has gotten around her limitations by increasing production value), this is certainly a viable alternative. . . it makes the headlines, we're discussing it but overall, the impact it has is small as many of younger simply aren't paying attention. It's grandma music.
It's also possible given her family's mental health history and being at the tail end of menopause, she's moved from functioning nutter to full-on headcase. We still don't fully understand the impact of menopause on mental health but we do know with pre-existing conditions and susceptibility/family history, the stakes run higher towards developing or worsening psychosis.
But, as others have stated, it could also be the injury that opened the doorway to greater addiction issues.
Though much of the aging elite are confounded in trying to understand the younger generations- we're already onto alphas now and the oldest among them are tweens, pop consumers. . . with less of attention span than the previous two.
The lockdowns was the real tipping point. . . to the extent now intentionally bad cosmetic treatments is all the rage. . . as it has been for quite some time with the younger gens that want people to recognize they've had procedures done and venturing towards the extremes of what was previously thought of extreme.
So, it could be anything really...

R148, say what you will about J.Lo's talent, but she would never be seen in public looking like this and delivering such a clunky performance. J.Lo is redefining the perception of women of a certain age. She still looks stunning even without the crazy filters.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | May 1, 2022 9:10 PM |

I get the J.Lo comparison as far as performance artist, but come on, she’s much younger than Madonna so it’s not really a fair comparison. She can still dance and is still attractive. Madonna was never a vocalist and now that she’s older she can’t rely on the dancing and edginess. Although I give her credit because I’m not sure how I’d move at 63.

John Cameron Mitchell on Madonna’s ‘Desperation’ and Hollywood’s ‘Lazy’ Feminism
“There was a time in the early ’80s when if you were gay you had to decide whether you were a Cyndi Lauper or a Madonna person, and there was no question for me,” Mitchell said during a recent phone interview. “I see no soul there, and it’s all about herself. I appreciate that she spoke up about AIDS and queer people, but there was also a kind of appropriation. I don’t know. I feel like she’s a user. [People] see a sort of desperation in her. She’s trying to remain relevant.”

I still can’t get over that ridiculous eye patch.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | May 1, 2022 10:13 PM |
The letter she wrote is really revealing:
"It’s so unequivocally frustrating to read that Whitney Houston has the music career I wish I had and Sharon Stone has the film career I’ll never have," Madonna wrote. "Not because I want to be these women because I’d rather die, but they’re so horribly mediocre and they’re always being held up as paragons of virtue [or] some sort of measuring stick to humiliate me."
Madonna was obviously feeling underappreciated when she wrote the letter and complained, Everything I do is so original and unique and I put so much of myself into it like my book and record and its only brought me heartache and pain.
I dont think I can play the game to be accepted, she wrote, Im too intelligent, I have too much pride.
Madonna, who won her first of her seven Grammy Awards in 1992, suggested to Enos that she was born in the wrong place and time and probably the wrong sex! And the legendary entertainer ended the letter on a rather dark note.
I feel like I have no career, no family, nothing permanent or tangible, Madonna wrote.
My outlook on life is black black black thats why Im no good for you or anyone else right now. I have to regain my sense of power and my joy for living.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | May 1, 2022 10:17 PM |

Someone needs to hit Madonna into oblivion. She is so over!
For some people Madonna was never much of anything. Her music was nothing special and she 'wrote' her songs with about 5-10 other people! It's laughable that people are so gullible, they think she wrote her hits, she didn't.
Madonna's entire schtick was about artifice, the 'music' took a backseat to all the image changes and the fake controversy. You want to see a big stage production? Go to Las Vegas. Most musicians put their music first, image second. Not Madonna.
Madonna herself said in an old print interview, if she didn't make it as dancer, she'd find another way to become rich, that's all she cared about, money, not anything creative or long lasting. Madonna happened upon something that people bought into. Her backstory, of coming to NYC with $35 in her pocket, was yet more bullshit.
Who the hell would listen to the rantings of Camille Paglia, she's another self-absorbed loony-toon.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | May 1, 2022 10:27 PM |

Mediocre? Who the hell is this nut-job kidding. I read this shit and all I can do is laugh.
Whitney had an amazing voice, she didn't need all the fake controversy and all the other bullshit Madonna needed to become famous. Its unfortunate that Whitney couldn't come out of the closet, which lead to her marrying a man she clearly didn't love, her drug addiction and ultimately, her death.
Madonna comparing herself to Sharon Stone, yet more hilarity! Madonna cannot act to save her life! In 'Desperately Seeking Susan', Madonna essentially played. a version of herself. That's not acting. In her other films, it was obvious she didn't have any acting ability. The remake of Lina Wertmuller's 'Swept Away', was a waste of film.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 1, 2022 10:46 PM |
At the very end, Maluma (whom we all know on a first-name basis at this point) is almost taking on the role of a kindly home-health aide for an elderly aphasia patient, gently and good-naturedly coaxing his confused ward to the floor so that she can straddle him per the rehearsal dictates. What is supposed to translate as throbbing, sexual heat comes across as demented tragedy.

OP's clip is so sad and pathetic. She looks like a wobbly 80 year old trying to dance at a relative's wedding.
Some performers cannot admit it's over. Or even try to move on to something else, to re-invent themselves.
The clip definitely proves that Madonna cannot admit her career is over. I suppose most of the people cheering her on weren't born when Madonna was first famous, they want to experience something they were not able to do in the past, that's why they are there. Then, there are Madonna's hardcore fans who think she can do no wrong, they still worship her nonsense. [bold]Now its geriatric nonsense. [/bold]

R171, I think a lot of sympathy for her evaporated at her last tour, where she kept her fans waiting for hours, such that many of them wound up getting only a couple hours of sleep on a weeknight. At that point, those were the die-hard fans that had stuck with her through critical and/or commercial disappointments, had defended her while others eviscerated her. And that was how she paid them back. You get what you give.

"It's time for her to follow Joan Crawford or Marlene herself, her heroines..."
She'd never heard of Marilyn, Marlene, Betty Boop, etc. til her brother influenced her career in the 80s. She was a dykey little street urchin with hairy armpits singing Punk rock when he repackaged her with a gay aesthetic. Dance music, movies, Broadway, Kaballah all followed.
When Guy Ritchie drove the gay bro out of their inner circle, her career began a sickly decline.

Turn in your cards. You're turning on an ally just because she has gotten older and can't dance as well as she used to. Can you move that good at 63? I mean, she has been serving the public for years, but it's still not enough. Just like Britney. It's never enough. A few lackluster performances and you're ready to tar and feather her.
Why is everyone in a tizzy over her using filters? Is there a law against that? You do realize she has seen her image ad nauseum everywhere for decades, right? There's very little left to keep her amused. Since forever she's been tongue in cheek, but everyone gets worried if she treats instagram like the fake joke that it is.
Gaga? Please. We'll see if she's still dancing at 63. I know if she is you'll rip her to shreds.

She’s a mess, but I feel sorry for her. I don’t know why she gets such vitriol on DL. I actually admired her “don’t fuck with me” sass when I was growing up. She still has that, but it’s just…misdirected and sad now. But the hate she gets on here is pretty extreme.

The only one of her kids who might tell her the truth is Rocco, when he is a bit older, established in his art career, and firmly ensconced in Daddy's will. The other kids will be too scared of getting disinherited by Mom to ever tell her she's spending her golden years making an idiot of herself and trashing her legacy.

@r227, That interview is so telling. Even then she was starting to lose the control that she had for so many years. Right then is when she needed to step back and change direction, but her ego and her defiance wasn't going to ever let that happen and we now have the crazy little old lady who once was Madonna ☹️
by Anonymous | reply 243 | May 2, 2022 10:06 AM |
Watching a 63-year old with ridiculous butt implants grinding on a 28-year old is disturbing. It's not sexy, not edgy. I t's downright deranged. The problem most DL'ers have with her isn't so much that she's "not as good as she used to be", R226 — It's that she refuses to not make a total ass out of herself.
Her arrested development won't allow her to be anything else but "that sexy, anti-patriarchy dominatrix" girl. How trite and witless that she, once again, brought out a whip on stage. Maluma just went along with it all, knowing full well it only makes him look better.
Madonna dear — Get off the stage. Start doing interesting stuff. Produce plays, movies… Get into genuine philanthropy. Curate art galleries, start something revolutionary in fashion. You've got all the time and, most of all, money in the world. Put it to good use.

She can be fat. She can perform.
But that would entail standing before a mic singing songs like Live To Tell, I'll Remember, Rain, Like A Prayer will being tastefully dressed and not rubbing herself against 20 year olds.
And honestly I don't think she wants to go that route.

The fat woman in a tube top and daisy dukes knocking over displays and screaming racial epithets at the Walmart security officer who caught her shoplifting also "doesn't care what anyone else thinks." Madonna is not in good company.

I admit that to see this tragic trainwreck that once was Madonna is entertaining, I don't know what she will do next but i'm sure she will surpass once again herself. She doesn't need to curate art or do philanthropy. She has done what she needed to do, and should realize that all sex symbols need to step away from the spotlight and pass the torch, and try to live as private humans when they become old. It maintains mystique.

What's most bizarre to me about Madonna is the trajectory her image had from 1998 to today. She went from reincarnated earth mother, lady of the manor, bitter divorcee, old woman with grills to a sexified, plastic, uncool granny. That trajectory makes 0 sense.

I was not a fan of her during the era at R227, but I don't see how that particular interview portends anything bad. I remember thinking this was her midlife crisis, as she veered from American Life bombing, to her stuffy English Roses shtick to the faux-lesbian "shock" at the VMAs. But, she seems somewhat at peace with the idea of not being #1 anymore. It's everybody else, embodied by Matt Lauer, who was pushing this "what will you do? If you're not sexy anymore" narrative.

by Anonymous | reply 274 | May 2, 2022 4:17 PM |
I do wonder why she doesn't go back to the adult contemporary With Honors Era. I really like that adult easy listening stuff.
But here's the thing. She keeps going on about artists being disruptive, and how she doesn't want (and never has) to play it safe or accept society's rules. So she's determined to act out, and she doesn't care if she's ridiculed.
She was ridiculed by the fickle public for years for what turned out to be some of her best work. Is it any wonder that she's not going to be frustrated or not bother using them as a compass? Maybe she's just seeing what she can get away with and the joke is on us?
by Anonymous | reply 275 | May 2, 2022 4:31 PM |
^ Here's the thing, what's edgy and provocative at 25 is pathetic and ridiculous at 63. Society is much more accepting and forgiving of the young and impetuous then they are of the old and foolish
by Anonymous | reply 276 | May 2, 2022 4:42 PM |
I'd feel sorry for her but she's been so obnoxiously and aggressively sure that she's always right, always edgy, and always provocative for the past several decades. Now that she's making a complete ass of herself on stage trying to stay in the spotlight in any way possible, I feel absolutely no remorse in ripping her to shreds. I'm not even embarrassed for her. She doesn't look human and she asks desperate more than anything else. Maybe she needs the money.

Nothing she’s doing is edgy or provocative. She’s copying her appearance after people like Chrissy Teigen and the Kardashians. Pathetic and embarrassing. Mumbling and wandering aimlessly around the stage seems cool when 20 year old Billie Eilish does it… not an elderly woman who seems legitimately confused.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | May 2, 2022 5:51 PM |
I remember back when she shunned sunlight (which seemed weird in the 80s) and ate a macrobiotic diet and was so disciplined with her workout, all to maintain her looks and ward off aging.
I never would've imagined she'd go the Elvis route.

I agree, that would be a perfect fit for Madonna at her age. Unfortunately, she's completely delusional and is desperate to appeal to a young audience, who couldn't give a shit about her and have no interest in someone old enough to be their grandmother. They're following artists of their own generation and to people their age Madonna is a dinosaur.
by Anonymous | reply 281 | May 2, 2022 6:17 PM |
I agree the sexy schtick needs to go. Weight-wise maybe she is over a life of Spartan discipline and wants to drink good wine and eat good food while she can still tolerate it.

For those of us who were kids in the 80s, we weren't listening to WWII acts like The Andrew Sisters and Bing Crosby. We are now at the same distance in time from the 1980s as the 1980s were from the 1940s so the kids today look at those 80s artists the same way we looked at the 40s artists like Sinatra etc. Ancient history.
Does that make you feel old or what?

Have to be honest, I never saw this train wreck coming. I thought she would age gracefully like other huge musical stars like Streisand and Rod Stewart who moved into recording American standards and show tunes to great success. She did very well with her soundtracks and even sang Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Oscar songs.

How old was Cher when she released "Believe"? Perhaps Madonna could have a comeback with something like that.
Speaking of Cher, has anyone seen her lately? Is she in hiding?
by Anonymous | reply 287 | May 2, 2022 7:54 PM |
She has become this Baby Jane character where she’s trying to dress like 1983 Madonna and like Baby Jane, it’s scary and desperate and ugly. Her wardrobe is ugly - over accessorizing, fishnets, braids, hats, chains, gloves, 8 rings on one hand, it’s too much. She looks so uncomfortable!
Musically, she’s a disaster. I hate the Madame X album and it’s the first album I have of hers I couldn’t listen to from start to finish. Her desire to be Miley Cyrus and Bono is painful.
She gave up her music career for touring with “Hard Candy”. That album was made for the sole purpose of touring with that big Live Nation contract. Same with “MDNA” and “Rebel Heart”, they were albums that had absolutely no direction. It was the first time she used writing camps and all the music could have been for Miley Cyrus and pop girls lessor.
She finally become the Debbie Gibson and Stacey Q. She became the lessor pop star with her latter albums. Kylie Minogue finally outshined her. Kylie’s albums have been any gems but they’re better than Madonna’s.
And what she had going for her crumbled. Her touring career is over. She went from $408 million to $36 million in 10 years. She’s lost her power as the biggest touring act.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | May 2, 2022 7:55 PM |
R286 I’m not surprised. She’s always craved attention and it used to be through her music, movies and her antics. Now it’s strictly antics with a capital A. I wish Madonna the best as I grew up with her with her songs, but she has zero self awareness and this shtick has really become pathetic and disturbing. I’m unsure how far she wants to go down this road, but she probably won’t live the year out if she continues this trajectory. The drinking, drugs and plastic surgery have completely destroyed her. Wonder if she’s one the DL death list?

Cher has always had a sense of humor about herself. Madonna never has. A sense of humor will carry you through when youth and beauty are gone.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | May 2, 2022 7:57 PM |
Madonna was very well-known as being super healthy and avoiding drugs and alcohol, unlike basically all of her contemporaries (many of whom are now dead) so it is pretty shocking that she's apparently done a total 180 and gone in the opposite direction, as the above poster said. Nobody would've thought Madonna, who was so obsessed with fitness and diet and clean living, would've turned into this.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | May 2, 2022 7:58 PM |

Ha, I just realise that this is the big difference between Dolly, Cher, Tina — they were sexy in their own way and they wanted to look enigmatic, but these old guard broads would never ever grind in their grandson’s lap on stage.
It was all in good fun. And even though one did country, the other pop and the third rock — they all came from revue-like backgrounds. Teasing the audience, but never taking it too far.

Cher has always laughed at herself. Madonna could never do this. She has a giant chip on her shoulder and likens herself an artiste. When Pierce Brosnan sang Live a Virgin to her, Madonna got incredibly angry saying, “Are you making fun of me?!” Cher would go backstage at Joan Rivers’s standup shows and ask, “Where are the Cher jokes?” She also refers to herself as the “old lady,” “older then dirt”. Madonna could never do this.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | May 2, 2022 8:07 PM |
I believe that she's so insulated and yes-ma'amed to death that she might not even realize how ridiculous she's become. After all, her whole life has been about shocking the establishment with her overt sexuality. The difference is that now she's old, no longer attractive, and competing with stuff like WAP, which is far more graphic and overt and gooey than anything Madge can do now, so her sad antics cannot even shock anymore on their own merit. What's shocking is how tragically she comes across, but she might not be able to make that distinction, because she's used to being defiant in the face of criticism. So when she hears about people mocking her, she's used to it -- yet more outrage at her raunchy, unapologetic sexual displays. And the deafening adulation she continues to receive from her diehard fans drowns out those who find her kind of tragic and pathetic.

I laugh when Madonna’s fans scream misogyny and why we don’t trash male rockstars. Well they’re not on stage with their ass and/or dick out, shoving their tongues down a young girl’s throat. They truly think Madonna is doing stuff guys her age do. They don’t. They know it looks ridiculous.

In a best case scenario, it might take four or five people, but Debi Mazur would spearhead an intervention, Madonna would go to rehab, then after that do a year of round-the clock 12-step meetings. Then she would downsize her real estate portfolio to two, keeping one as her main residence, and rarely leave. She would be happy with her three youngest kids still living there. And part of the $ from the real estate sales would go towards giving everyone who saw the Madame X tour a refund. In other words, making amends.
Oh, and she would never perform again.

Because Madonna would want complete control of the interview and control of the images. She started to to withdraw from in-depth interviews after she was criticized for adopting children from Malawi. She used to give great interviews, but those days are over.

But there's no possible way to tell her the truth about ALL of those things without being shut out of her life forever, because she won't be able to handle it. Instead she'll shoot the messenger.

They allow you to pinch the entire pic in any direction, which results in everything looking warped. A professional photo editor would need a day to deliver well-edited pictures, but she's way too impatient and impulsive for that.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | May 3, 2022 7:58 AM |
Who is she trying to kid with those edited-to-an-inch-of-their-life instagram pictures? We saw the video, she does not look like that. Like many far younger people, the worst thing that ever happened to the bitch was getting a smart phone and signing up to social media. It has destroyed her.

R283 I generally agree with you…it can be shocking to think in those terms (how much time has passed). But then I’m regularly surprised by the number of people I encounter under 25 who are very familiar with 1980s music.
I think part of it is that music today is much closer stylistically to music of the 80s than music of the 40s had been to music of the 80s. Plus, they made videos—many of which are still in circulation (YouTube, Vimeo) and their songs get sampled in contemporary music…not to mention used in new movies and television.
It’s just not as much of a stretch for 20 year olds to be familiar with 40 year old music today. However, yes: Madonna is not resonating much with young audiences and I’m sure attending a Madonna concert is more of a goofy lark than anything else.

If you ever had been involved with a narcissist you know it's impossible to make them realize they have a problem, they will never aknowledge it , and they never apologize. To even try it's a waste of time. My father was one and trust me if i tell you we tried so many times but all we got as response was more psychological and verbal abusive reactions. In Madonna case i have no doubt everyone around her gave up trying, i pity Rocco and Loudes because it's not easy, i know it.

"Madonna. It's not my kind of music, but she puts on a hell of a show, and she's deeply respected in the industry because of the attention and work she puts into her live performances."
- What a Director of Entertainment at a major Casino told me in the early 90s about whose live show he would recommend I see.
I think, in addition to what's all been said, that, at least for me, who regrets not making sure I bought a ticket to Madonna's early 90s tour when it hit the then Rosemount Horizon arena outside of Chicago, is that, now, with her debasing herself, she's betraying a standard of performance that she herself set.
A standard, in her prime, that, no other performer could match.
And it ain't a pretty sight. It's embarrassing and reeks of a 5th D - Desperation
And spare me the "sexism' charge. I don't want to see Mick Jagger attempt to prance around now, too.
Anybody else see the shadow of Sean Penn's face in that pic of Madonna's Dad at r330?

I actually think the worst thing about the video is her grinding up on Maluma. It’s an awkward dynamic because he looks like he could be her son/grandson. I’ve always said, she was always style over substance and that’s why her career hasn’t endured as much as others. She can’t just sit on a stool and sing. Same with Britney Spears, but she’s still young enough to perform. By Madonna’s age she’ll no doubt be done with it all.

by Anonymous | reply 410 | May 4, 2022 9:40 PM |
R410 The artwork and photoshoot are too similar to the ones used for the Celebration greatest hits from 2009.
And how on Earth are tracks 1-3, 5, 11 and 15 considered remixes? All of them are just edits of the original song while track 5 is just basically the album version of Open Your Heart with a longer intro.
This seems like a lazy rushed cash cow release with very little effort put in that pretty much no-one asked for. If Madonna had complete control over this project and this is the first release in the long awaited reissue campaign then we are in major trouble.

To those saying "Where did all her willpower go, she used to be so disciplined!" The answer is that she could easily forgo other temptations when she had the most powerful drug available to her on tap: mass adulation. For a narcissist that tops *everything* else. So she could afford to be very disciplined in other ways. Now, not so much.
I *always* knew she was fundamentally empty inside and that this day would come. She was so up her own ass back then and I hated how she pulled the wool over the eyes of millions of people and convinced them she had true talent. But seeing it now, I just feel sorry for her.
The fact that she's allowed to carry on and humiliate herself like this tells us that she NO ONE real in her life. All the money, all that glittering 'success'. This is probably the very outcome she was trying to protect herself against and yet here we are.
If even ONE person in her life really cared for her (and I doubt anyone does....as she was 100% about herself and I think all her bio kids have basically run from her like she's a burning building) they'd intervene and she'd 'retire' for good.
I did love this live performance she did- it was much smarter than her usual sex gimmicks and worked well. So I'll leave it here and we can remember better days....

This hasn't come up in a while, but why does everyone say she dumps her boyfriends? Would't it be the other way around?
The most recent one, he probably was into the fact that she zeroed in on him and brought him into her world—the jet-set life of a superstar as it would appear—but when he got there, he saw how tacky and toxic Madonna has become, publicly and behind closed doors, which is a side of Madonna most people never even see. And now he's a part of this toxic environment. And there's very little freedom go out in public or do anything spontaneously, every venture outside of the compound (her NYC mansion is on East 80th or 81st, and there are several very discreet sidewalk adjacent little signs that in so many words say 'Don't even think of hanging out here") has to be planned, mapped out. And she's easily older than his actual mother, and he wakes up and says "I never had a thing for older women." And he's not a fuck-up, he just wants to live a healthy life etc., so he says "I'm out.. That life was not for me"

r473, Christopher Ciccone's tell-all book is titled 'Life With and WIthout My Sister, Madonna' It's a fun read, and with summer coming up, it's the perfect trashy beach read.
Among the tidbits; • She never puts anything in the subject header box of her emails. She figures once they see that it's an email from Madonna, they'll read it no matter what. • During her 80s/90s heady heyday, when making the rounds at parties in NYC, as soon a she was no longer the center of attention, it was time to go to another party. • When she would go to big family gatherings in Michigan, it was understood that if there were not enough chairs to go around, she had to have a chair, and it would be the chair of her choice.

R481, I agree with you. Her catalog is streaming like shit and it's a fucking shame. She arguably made more classic pop songs than any other artist. The reason she's doing poorly is because of her and her alone. Her behavior has even alienating hardcore fans. I find her instagram repulsive and I can't even look at any pictures of her.

I was just thinking--even if Madonna was to die now, would anyone care aside from her fans? I definitely don't see her death receiving as much press coverage as Michael Jackson or even Whitney's death. Her catalog may not even see a surge because she's exhausted all the goodwill towards her. Michael Jackson didn't do that. If this was 2006, it would be a different story. But that was a long time ago and she's just a joke now.

R486, but the thing I will say about MJ is that he never treated his fans like shit. Madonna can't even treat her own fans well. And another thing is that even though MJ was a pariah, Thriller and his other albums continued to sell strongly even before he died. Obviously his death helped but it wasn't like he was doing badly before that. Madonna's back catalog is not doing well.

Not really. It’s very sad. She has way too many years of being boring and irrelevant for anyone to really care. She decided not to tap into the mature market to get those people to remember her. Instead she concentrates on a generation that has no idea who the weird old lady is hanging around their idols. She’s basically Martha Raye.

Madonna simply aged out of contemporary pop culture relevancy. It happens to every single one of them. Some of them, like Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel accept the fact that they're now legacy artist because they're too old to be in the middle of the pop culture zeitgeist and just do their jobs, and maintain their dignity.
Then you have someone like Madonna who just can't accept that she's aged out and it's not 1990 anymore and is increasingly desperate to regain her hold on pop culture, but of course time moves on and that's never going to happen and she just looks pathetic. Nobody wants to see granny pretending she's still 25 and flashing her titties and ass, no matter how well-preserved granny is. It's just gross and unattractive.

MJ, despite his quirks and flaws, and even despite his whack plastic surgery, was a fantastic song writer and an incredibly innovative dancer.
Look on YouTube: Kids today are still trying to dance like MJ, his hits remain timelessly popular. Jackson wasn’t just an artist, he was a cult figure. Truly an icon.
Madonna? Some good stuff in her early days, but her repertoire dated poorly. Forgettable performances, no signature moves to speak of (choreography for Vogue was taken from the NY ballrooms)…
Her voice has zero expression, an extremely limited range, sounds cold and robotic. She can‘t hold a candle to MJ‘s vocal acrobatics.
Michael Jackson was a genius. Madonna simply a performer.

What I see of Gen Z comments on YouTube videos is that the parents get therm into older music, but it’s usually the more musically inclined, serious artists. Just the other day this 14 yr old was commenting about how he was named after Layne Staley of AIC and he’s now a fan of their music. Madonna’s music was ok, but it was like bubble gum, disposable. Serious artists resonate and keep those fans for a lifetime because they make you feel. My BIL was always obsessed with Springsteen and still is. I hear Madonna songs a lot on the light stations, but I don’t usually listen to the whole song before changing. Whereas someone like Carol King, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Manilow, Diamond, who were mostly before my time, I will. She’s aged out for sure, but her music didn’t have much depth. She relied on shock value.
As for her dying, it would be would be big news. However, the artists mentioned like MJ, Prince, WH died younger and more sudden under shady circumstances. Two of them had major scandals throughout their lifetime too. Madonna was always such a narcissistic control freak, she really didn’t have many scandals. It’s sad to say, but Madonna’s relevance is dissipated because she made it into old age.

Madge's strength was always her music videos.
She raised the bar high with Borderline, Material Girl, Open Your Heart, Express Yourself, Like A Prayer, Oh Father, Cherish, Vogue, Justify My Love, Bedtime Story, and others. A new Madonna video used to be an event.
And although she's a terrible actress, she really made a connection with the camera in her music videos. That was her gift.
She also brought that quality to her still photos. And was wise to work with so many talented photographers.
Now, the camera is her enemy.

Totally disagree with this. Material Girl recently topped Bad as the most shared 80s music video on tiktok. The problem isn't her music, it's her. And her Vogue performance has 50 million views which is crazy because that's like half of the views of the actual music video.
[quote] Her voice has zero expression, an extremely limited range, sounds cold and robotic.
Her range is limited but this idea that her voice has zero expression is silly. Live To Tell, Oh Father, Like a Prayer, Frozen, I'll Remember, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, etc. are all sung with lots of emotion.

This is total BS. Her music has more depth to it than Michael Jackson's did. Michael Jackson just repeated himself forever after Thriller. Live to Tell, Oh Father, Frozen, Papa Don't Preach, The Power of Goodbye, Express Yourself, have more depth than Michael Jackson's songs.
[quote] She relied on shock value.
This is only true if history ends at 1992. From 1993 through 2008 or so, she stopped using shock tactics to promote her music. And Ray of Light, Confessions and Music were all massive global hits.

R548 agree, people are full of so much negativity for her on here it colours their opinion of everything. Just because she didn’t have the range of some singers doesn’t mean she can’t sing. At its best her voice sounded pretty warm and rich and she really knew how to bring emotion and conviction to what she sang. This is an example. You don't get to be as huge as Madonna was with no talent. She had a perfectly decent voice for pop. Diana Ross didn't have a very huge vocal range either, but her voice was perfect for pop, it was very commercial.
Out of all the pop stars of her era, Madonna had the most consistent and varied output. Michael Jackson, as great as he was initially, shot his wad with Thriller. He only did two studio albums after that. Bad only had two or three good songs and Dangerous was pure shit, and sounded very dated when it came out. And of course Michael Jackson also fucked little boys.

Whitney Houston had the greatest voice of her generation, but her material wasn't always the best. Unfortunately, she got caught up in that PUTRID Adult Contemporary wave that was so popular in the late 80s/early 90s. Clive Davis really pushed those MOR "Lite FM" ballads on her because that was where the money was with the white frau audience he wanted for Whitney.

Right, just because someone is "taelented" , doesn't mean they'll make good or great music. I think Lady Gaga and Madonna are perfect contrasts. Madonna isn't anywhere near as musically talented as Gaga, but she managed to make much better and more memorable music. She is greater than the sum of her parts. Lady Gaga is the opposite case, she's so talented yet everrything she has done after Born this Way has gotten more and more boring and mediocre. That song "A Million Reasons" is a perfect example. All that "talent" and that's the best ballad you can come up with? Ballads like Live to Tell, You'll See and Take a Bow shit all over that song.

There is no question that Madonna created some great pop music in the 80s, 90s, and even the early 00s. But her time as a pop star is over, and she'd do better turning all her energy towards something besides plastic surgery, mediocre stage performances, and bizarre Instagram and Tik-Tok posts. We only have so much time on this earth, and she's wasting her later years in an endless narcissistic spiral.

Madonna could still make great music, but it would have to be more "mature" and targeted to an older audience, which is something that Madonna will never do because she refuses to accept that she's a dinosaur to younger people, and they have no interest in her.
If Madonna courted the Gen X audience who made her a star and have been lifelong fans, she could really do some interesting work. Madonna has always been a Gen X phenomenon, even though she's actually a Boomer herself. Ironically, most of her fellow Boomers can't stand her. This is evident right here on DL with our eldergays.

I don’t think Madonna had much talent or depth to her music, but I agree about MJ too, he is way overrated. He did the same moves at least 2 decades. Not to mention he’s a pedophile. Prince, Springsteen, those were the true 80s talents. I respect musicality, instruments and storytelling through lyrics.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | May 8, 2022 5:07 PM |
Prince IMHO was the greatest male artist of his era. He was truly incredible at his creative peak.

Hysterical R554.
That is like saying "You cannot be as big as McDonalds while having garbage food."
Huge and quality do not go together in the US. Huge and knowing how to sell shit are not the same as quality.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | May 8, 2022 5:09 PM |
r564 Madonna made some of the best pop music of all time, her catalog definitely has some quality to it.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | May 8, 2022 5:09 PM |
Wouldn't it be interesting if Madonna took her hits, and some deep cuts, had them arranged and music directed by someone brilliant, and took them on the road in an intimate, sophisticated cabaret act? Maybe even added a few well-chosen covers? Dressed the part, maybe borrowing from her Dietrich fangurl looks?
Or, you know, posing like a bloated hooker's corpse, ass up, head under the bed, as if waiting to be examined for evidence by detectives Benson & Tutuola. That's cool too.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | May 8, 2022 5:20 PM |
Then why isn’t she selling out concerts anymore, R565? Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Bon Jovi, etc... all still sell out. Her music didn’t stick and that’s the bottom line. Not sure she could be a legacy act because, I am sorry, I don’t think she’s that talented, but she didn’t even try to keep her original audience.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | May 8, 2022 5:23 PM |
That's my point--Madonna could still perform, but not in the pop star persona she's crafted since the 80s. She can't compete with Gen Z stars in their 20s, and she's ridiculous to even try. The cabaret act is a great idea, but she'd never do it.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | May 8, 2022 5:23 PM |
R567, she was selling out concerts at record numbers until very recently. That Madam X Tour was a disaster though.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | May 8, 2022 5:28 PM |
I wouldn’t be surprised if she had to pay Maluma to join him. This is not a good look for Him
by Anonymous | reply 570 | May 8, 2022 5:30 PM |
Madonna doesn't do a lot of hits from her back catalog, and fans don't want to hear the MDMA or Madame X shit. Springsteen, Joel, Elton, Stevie Nicks and others only do their best-known hits in concert because they're smart enough to know that what the fans want to hear and that's why they showed up in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | May 8, 2022 5:31 PM |
Madonna and Mariah both have such a weird relationship with their older hits. They despise them yet those are the hits their audience remembers and lovers.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | May 8, 2022 5:32 PM |
While filming the “Papa Don’t Preach” video, Danny Aiello asked Madonna for an autographed photo. His daughter was a fan. Madonna refused his request. It was so petty, selfish and cruel.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | May 8, 2022 5:35 PM |
Yes, R571, all those artists understand what the audience is there for: To hear the hits that mean a lot to them. To recapture a bit of their youth, or in some cases to pass their love of these acts on to their children or grandchildren, who they bring along to the show.
These acts often sing songs that are 50 years old. Paul McCartney sings Beatles songs, with good grace. He understands that at the end of it all, he is a working man, and this is his job, and the audience are his customers. They are here for him because he is there for them.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | May 8, 2022 5:35 PM |
Madonna is obsessed with youth--not surprising she hates the decades-old hits that remind her of her age. She doesn't care what her GenX and older millennial fans want because she wants to appeal to 18-year-olds, which isn't going to happen en masse.
by Anonymous | reply 575 | May 8, 2022 5:37 PM |
Interestingly enough Stevie Nicks, who is 10 years older, has the biggest young music star in the world as a collaborator and fan, Harry Styles. Gaga has Tony Bennett. Have any young artists today cited Madonna as an influence or wanted to duet with her besides Maluma?
R573, that’s horrible, if true. But she’s always been known as a terrible person. That’s another reason she can segue even into a lifestyle brand, she not relatable or particularly likable.
by Anonymous | reply 576 | May 8, 2022 5:45 PM |
It wasn't that Madonna refused to give Aiello's daughter an autograph, it's that she refused to let the daughter come on set so she could take pictures with her. She has hated Madonna ever since.

[quote]Madonna and Mariah both have such a weird relationship with their older hits.
Mariah has performed all of her number one hits and on her last tour featured several deep album cuts. She's even done stuff from Glitter because fans made it go to number one on I Tunes.
Madonna's fans did the same with Bedtime stories, but not one song from it was featured on the Madame X tour.

Is it true that Madonna kept her fans waiting for three hours, before she appeared at her concert?
by Anonymous | reply 579 | May 8, 2022 6:41 PM |
R579 she kept us waiting an hour and a half at one of her shows (I think it was Confessions). It was maddening because what are we going to do, leave? We paid hundreds of dollars for tickets.
by Anonymous | reply 580 | May 8, 2022 6:46 PM |
Madonna's music is mostly limited by her/her collaborators' lack of ability at writing interesting melodies. There is no pleasing feeling of development or harmonica elaboration. The songs are all full of "hooks" or simple melodic riffs but those always get beaten to death in the arrangements. Has there ever been much musical joy in Madonna's music? The songs often feel contrived and thin melodically - production without content.
A classic example is "Crave" (one of the better songs from [italic]Madame X[/italic]). Swae Lee's vocal sections are much more interesting than Madonna's but they're kept to a minimum, probably so that they don't overshadow the contributions of "the star".
by Anonymous | reply 581 | May 8, 2022 7:00 PM |
Ha ha - "harmonic", not "harmonica"
by Anonymous | reply 582 | May 8, 2022 7:01 PM |
Madonna keeping her audiences waiting HOURS is one of the reasons she lost her hold as a top touring artist. Nobody wants to wait three hours in a hot arena for some entitled white woman to come on stage and start pontificating that "we need a revolution" or whatever nonsense she chooses to spout. These people have paid hundreds of dollars to see you and you treat them like garbage. Not to mention they now get the privilege of waiting hours to watch you perform your shitty new album with MAYBE some old songs in truncated form and remixed.
But of course, it's all because of ageism and misogyny as Madonna would cry.

R583, I'm a fan and reading what you posted makes me glad I never ever bought tickets for any of her tours. Tardiness is a pet peeve of mine, I can't stand to be anywhere more than 5 minutes late, let alone 3 fucking hours.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | May 8, 2022 7:19 PM |
True, r584. I don't mind staying up late because I hate going to bed early, but I'm probably more of an exception to the norm. But seeing Madonna do that to other people just showed me how entitled and out of touch she is. And I've been a lifelong fan.
She used to be such a professional - that is why she became one of the biggest touring acts because she put in the time and her shows started on time. I don't know how she has the audacity to sit in her dressing room for all those hours and let people WAIT. And what the fuck is she doing in there while audiences wait? And it's so disrespectful to the venue staff who probably have to request overtime from their managers - and of course, the whole issue with transit. Unlike you, Madonna, many people have to rely on transit, and, yes, transit can end at 1:00 a.m. in the morning when your Madame X show finishes. We all don't have the luxury of having a limo escort us home.

Starting 20-30 minutes late to build anticipation is one thing. Starting three hours late is a shitty thing to do.

Her earlier work had interesting melodies and were very fun pop. You have to remember that many of Madonna's songs were not pop music but electronic dance music, which is different than melodic pop music.

I stopped going to Madonna concerts after Rebel Heart. I felt I was watching an animatronic version of the superstar who had fascinated me for so many years.
by Anonymous | reply 588 | May 8, 2022 7:44 PM |
Madonna always let her audience wait for hours on end. It became her shtick, even though people loathed her for it. But, she was huge and relevant back then; so she got away with it.
Still, a nasty habit. George Michael always started on the dot. Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, same story.
by Anonymous | reply 589 | May 8, 2022 8:49 PM |
As DL'ers know, it's not just fans who are left waiting and kept up all night; it's all the staff and crew at and around the venue.
It's a real narcissist stunt. It can only work when the money you bring in is worth the shit you rain down on those "beneath" you.

The Madonna David Foster describes here is long gone. Listen to how he talks about her. He basically says that she really earned her co-producer credit.

[quote] Madonna always let her audience wait for hours on end.
That's not true. Madonna's earlier tours, she was a professional and showed up on time. She seemed to start pulling this shit around Hard Candy, then MDNA.
The trace of Madonna's decline is Hard Candy. After Confessions, she was on top again. There was good buzz on Madonna forums. But I remember when Hard Candy came out, she lost a lot of fans. And it just got worse from there.
She should have taken the opportunity of the Super Bowl performance to do a tour of all her hits and she would have pleased longtime fans and maybe picked up some new ones. But her ego wouldn't allow that.

The videos for What It Feels Like For A Girl, Die Another Day, American Life, being hung on a cross? Madonna was topless dancing in 1994, making out with lesbians, her Letterman interview in 1994, dating rapers, she did topless photoshoots during the Bedtime Stories era. WTF are you talking about?

Only in Europe. Aside from Hung Up, which didn't even crack the top 5, none of the other singles made an impact in the US.
The decline for her in the US started after Music.
