Where does she fall in the pecking order of iconic country women? Is she supposed to be a cool chick ala Dolly, or is she a conservative right winger? My grandma loved her, and I can still remember sitting down with her as a little kid to watch some godawful TV movie about Barbara Mandrell (starring everyone’s fave cokehead Marcia Brady!!). You hear a lot about Dolly (the undisputed queen), Tammy, Loretta etc but not much about Mz Mandrell!
She gets credit for getting out while close to the top, mainly because she didn't seem to have the voice to keep it interesting through maturity.
I always found her to be as authentic as she could be, but the commercialism of her success actually was part of a poppy downturn for some branches of country music. Country never has learned how to mix bad plastic with naive country gilt.

R2 She had to or the insurance would not payout which she had to use to pay her band while she couldn't tour. Just like a couple I knew where the father accidently killed his child by backing over the boy, the mother had to sue the father for the insurance to pay out. That wasn't Barbara being a cunt that was insurance companies being cunts.
R1 She has managed to retire and stay retired unlike, Garth, The Judds, and Cher. But, it has cost her some status as a legend.

I used to love the Mandrell Sisters’ Variety Show as a gayling, but she was by far my least favorite of the three. I don’t care much for her voice, and she doesn’t seem very charasmaric. She’s a talented musician, though, and I do really love her Christmas album (even though it’s a little too Jesusy for my heathen tastes.)

Barbara barely counts as country in my book. For years I thought her biggest hit (Sleeping Single) was by Captain & Tennille or some such MOR act. Dolly balanced pop and country much more effectively, without sounding too syrupy and adult contemporary, which hasn’t aged well at all. That said, I do like this Babs Mandrell cut, which has an old school bluesy feel:

Love Barbara. I've always considered her more of a pop singer who was embraced by the country crowd. She has an R&B quality in her voice that's like fine sandpaper. In many of her albums cuts she allowed her voice to get smoker than she did on the songs she intended as singles. I'd be curious to hear how husky her voice has become with age. Maybe she'll return from the abyss to give us one more bluesy album...or not. I think the Hallmark remark was perfect--Barbara Mandrell & the Hallmark Channel seem like Christmas-family-reunion-before-the-town-gets-stripmined-and-I-think-I'll-look-up-prom-date gold.

R30 I wonder if she just decided she just didn't want to do much of anything anymore, she hasn't appeared as an actress since a 2000 episode of Walker Texas Ranger. She and Reba are known to be very good friends, yet she never even guested on either of her sitcoms. It is understandable, Barbara had been performing since she was 13 so she had a forty year career even though she retired at age 52. She is also one of the few Opry members to be allowed to remain a member without performing. Usually that is only done in cases of illness, but it was done for her because she is so well liked in the industry.

Her breakthrough song was “The Midnight Oil,” which was notable - and highly controversial - for being the first country hit to portray the woman as the cheater, not the man. She went on to record a lot of safe, middle of the road material but I’ll always respect her for launching with a gutsy song like this.

Centuries ago, some older friend of my mother's, when one of her songs came on the radio, turned to me and said conspiritorially, "That Barbara Mandrell; she really puts the 'cunt' in country, I'll tell ya." Dottie West was a good old gal. She lived hard, died young, and left a nice corpse. Her daughter Shelly West is basically retired from music and has one of the lowest alto registers in country music. Michelle Lee starred in the t.v movie about Dottie West's life and yet OP makes a thread about Barbara Mandrell.

R15 You're right on the money with them all being Trumpers.
Barbra was interviewed back in the 90s (it could've been Crook & Chases who are also both far right wingers) where she said she was friends with Rush Limbaugh (this was after he had a recurring segment on his show where he made fun of gay men who had died of AIDS so she obviously could sit thru all of the crap for years without cancelling him). Well anyway in the interview, she said she only disagreed with him on 1 issues (I forgot what it was but it wasn't LBT rights). I've never liked her since. Louise is a card carrying repub & so was the other one the last time I checked. All 3 sisters have done the 700 Club & are awful chummy with Pat Robertson (recently famous for "gays are transmitting AIDS thru rings" & "Kill the gays" bills in Africa) so that tells you where they stand on our rights.
Barbra has such a hard core bitch rep that her hubby had to go behind her back & smooth things over with whomever got in her way over her career. I bet one reason we don't see much her anymore is that she's burned a lot of bridges in her now 73 years of life.

To add to R68, I seem to remember her also getting a lot of flack when it was revealed that she was a member of the Mortimer Club in Miami which had a strct no-Jewish policy well into the 1990s, when Barbara was confronted about it, she was quote as saying, 'it's their policy, not mine'. Apparently one of her good friends cut off all ties with Barbara when she found out, apparently telling her to 'go to hell'. Suffice to say I don't think her career ever recovered.

R71 Her career was over in the 80s Rose.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 29, 2022 4:16 AM |
Yep, that's right R64 - they really were mostly singles oriented. I think Emmylou Harris was one of the first to focus on albums that had an overall 'feel' rather than them being a few hit singles joined together with filler material. But then again she did come out of left field, being considered country rock (and these days Americana) rather than pure country, despite being more country than many of the 'country' artists that followed her. I think that approach influenced a lot of people, including 'queens' like Dolly and Loretta, whose albums like The Grass Is Blue and Van Lear Rose are much more in that album-centred vein.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 29, 2022 4:27 AM |

Barbara suffered from the same problem that Tanya Tucker faced, they hit the scene young and had almost immediate success and then they became passé while still young. Tanya though managed to comeback with a second string of hits in the early 90s, before fading away again until that wonderful lesbian brought her back.
Think about it both are associated with the same generation as Loretta, Dolly, Tammy, and Dottie, but they are/were a lot younger than them and their music sounded different. Even Dolly is three years older than Barbara and Tammy was six. Age wise Barbara would fit in better as the older edge of Reba's generation.

I haven’t thought about her in years, wow. My aunt and uncle used to have a house down the road from Barbara Mandrell and her husband, in White’s Creek TN, outside Nashville. My aunt always said Barbara was a megabitch and that everyone in town loathed her. She used to berate the workers at the grocery store, post office etc and her husband had to follow her around apologizing for her. Despite her pious churchgoing image, apparently she cursed like a sailor and liked to spew vulgarities. Word on the street was that Barbara’s infamous road rage was partially to blame for the car crash that almost derailed her career. When Barbara and her family finally moved everyone in town breathed a heavy sigh of relief.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 29, 2022 8:41 AM |
Dottie West could write a pretty good tune & cut a good studio track, but apparently all she thought she needed to be a live performer were a set of eyelashes & a curling iron. She exuded more teeth than personality on a stage, no presence at all.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 29, 2022 11:02 AM |
OP I was partially joking around with you and I'm sorry for getting silly.
Barbara Mandrell was actually talented and fit in really well for the era. If you squint some you can see that she did the whole Donna Mills thing with her makeup and hairdos.
She could go from the steel guitar to the alto sax to the banjo without missing a beat. My gosh! I'm dead serious with that.
I do stand by my opinion that she would have been very comfortable with doing blue eyed soul. Her tonality was great for that genre and I think she was sincere with it because her cover of that one Bobby Womack song ("If Loving You Is Wrong...") was respectful to the genre in a natural way.
Her politics do suck, though. She spent most of her upbringing in California. Little known fact. Barbara and her sisters put on the country act a bit you know.

The Neotraditional country movement of the mid-80s was partly a backlash against the success of country-pop acts like Mandrell, Kenny Rogers, and Anne Murray. By the late 80s, their Country chart success was over and acts that embraced older country music -- like George Strait, Randy Travis, The Judds -- were dominating country music. However, a by-product of that was that country music -- which had enjoyed huge success on pop radio in the late 70s, early 80s -- all but disappeared from pop radio until the late 90s, when people like LeAnn Rimes and Shania Twain. There was a 17 year pause between a song by country artists hitting #1 on the Hot 100 -- from October, 1983, when Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton hit #1 with "Islands in the Stream" to March, 200, when Lonestar hit #1 with "Amazed."

Wow, Emmylou Harris look amazing @ R87. She always looked good. But no amount of Plastic Surgery can bring her voice back. RIP.
Barabas Mandrell is kind of before my time, but I am a fan of Carrie Underwood (relax) and she loves Barbara Mandrell. And there are some similarities. Great singers with strong voices that have an almost metallic tone. So their songs or lyrics maybe moving but the impression is often a bit harsh. But they can do a barnburner as good as anyone. Carrie could play Tammy Wynette. She has real TWANG.
Carrie sang with her hero - Axl Rose on Saturday night at Stagecoach and lit the place up! She's an interesting and well known kinda mean chick herself. That weird mix of Christian and sexy and conservative and Jesusy. Carrie supports the gay marriage but is probably a racist.
Anyway Barbara Mandrell is still a big enough an influence to make it into Carrie's salute to the Great Women of Country Music. Keep an open mind. Carrie does a great job at making these songs work for her own voice while still paying proper tribute. She's much better than people think and her voice is kind of at peak level at 40 years old. That's how it's supposed to be if you don't fuck it up. Think of your favorites gays. If they weren't heavy smokers and drug users, the best time for a fully realized female voice is between the ages of 35 and 45. Facts are facts.
Carrie sounds great these days. Ghost Town is a GREAT song and she just tore up Sweet Child of Mine last night with Axl.
Kelly Clarkson HATES Carrie Underwood and Kelly doesn't hate anyone. So there's that. Trust Kelly.
Barbara Mandrell and Carrie both have bitchy blonde girl faces. Maybe they are really sweethearts of the rodeo?

Well, good try.
Dusty Springfield? No. She was never country. Shania had massive sales but I think she'd be in the second tier, if only because of longevity.
Patsy Cline will always be near or at the top of the pyramid. Period.
Emmylou was more country rock or folk, and Bobbie Gentry was an interesting mix of pop and country. And also had the good sense and grace to get the fuck out of Dodge while she was, if not on top, then not at rock bottom.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | May 2, 2022 2:57 PM |
And while I don't want to get into what is or is not "real" country, I can't really see Shania as country. A lot of that kind of music is the same pop music that was written for any number of Top 40 acts. Adding a steel guitar does not a country song make.
The boundaries have also blurred over time, and acts like the Dixie Chicks legitimately had a foot in multiple camps.

Barbara Mandrell could've easily been a blue eyed soul singer, kind of the female version of Daryl Hall. Interesting to ponder what kind of career she would've had.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | May 2, 2022 6:35 PM |
few of Barbara Mandrell's songs crossed over to Adult Contemporary charts - the biggest was ""(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right" which hit #6 on the A/C charts
But back then it was almost impossible to have success in both country & pop - a few country artists did have hits that crossed over
It wasn't until Shania Twain made that her goal (to reach pop, country & AC at same time) was it accepted that Country artists could play on AC radio

R104 It is strange to me that Reba wasn't played more on AC radio. Some of her big hits, especially "Does He Love You" seems like it would've fit perfectly.

Um, r104, Kenny Rogers and Anne Murray regularly had top 10 hits on both the Country and AC charts.
Kenny: "Lucille" (#1 Country, #10 AC); "The Gambler" (#1 Country, #3 AC); "She Believes In Me" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "You Decorated My Life" (#1 Country, #2 AC); "Coward of the County" (#1 Country, #5 AC); "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer" (#3 Country, #2 AC); "Love the World Away" (#4 Country, #8 AC); "Lady" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "I Don't Need You" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "Share Your Love With Me" (#5 Country, #1 AC); "Through The Years" (#5 Country, #1 AC); "Love Will Turn You Around" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "We've Got Tonight" (#1 Country, #2 AC); "Islands in the Stream" (#1 Country, #1 AC).
Anne: "Snowbird (#10 Country, #1 AC); "Danny's Song" (#10 Country, #1 AC); "A Love Song" (#5 Country, #1 AC); "You Needed Me" (#4 Country, #3 AC); "I Just Fall in Love Again" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "Shadows in the Moonlight" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "Broken Hearted Me" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "Daydream Believer" (#3 Country, #1 AC); "Could I Have This Dance (#1 Country, #3 AC); "Just Another Woman in Love" (#1 Country, #7 AC); "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" (#1 Country, #10 AC).

Was Anne Murray technically a Country artist? I thought she was an Adult Contemporary artist first and foremost, who had songs that crossed over to the Country charts.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | May 2, 2022 6:54 PM |
Another one who had hits on the Country and AC charts - Eddie Rabbitt:
"Suspicions" (#1 Country, #9 AC); "Drivin' My Life Away" (#1 Country, #3 AC); "I Love a Rainy Night" (#1 Country, #1 AC); "Step By Step" (#1 Country, #3 AC); "Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight" (#1 Country, #10 AC); "You and I" (#1 Country, #2 AC).

R107 Also, Dolly has charted on the AC charts often. And, Eddy Arnold had a string of hits on AC in the 1960s. However, in the 1970/80s it looks like it was easier for many country artists to cross over onto Pop stations rather than AC ones.
R108 Anne Murray's first hit landed on AC/Pop before Country, but from then on most of her hits charted on all three. But, she was, unlike Olivia Newton John and John Denver, welcomed in the country world and was supported. People protested when the other two won awards but they cheered when Anne performed or won. Anne Murray was a doctor's daughter, but he daddy was the doctor in a coal mine town, so she still had Country bona fides.

r108, my impression is that Anne Murray mixed folk, pop, and country in her early-mid 70s output ("Snowbird," "Danny's Song," "A Love Song") with specific country recordings for that market ("He Thinks I Still Care," the flip side of "You Won't See Me," was her first #1 on the country chart). After the phenomenal success of "You Needed Me," she went in an AC approach on her next album, but ironically had her biggest hit on the country chart with the non-descript "I Just Fall in Love Again," which logged 3 weeks at #1 on the country chart. Her subsequent songs were definitely more country inflected -- "Could I Have This Dance," "Just Another Woman in Love," "Another Sleepless Night," and "A Little Good News" are all very much country songs. She then tried to go back to a pop sound with "Now and Forever (You and Me)," but pop radio rejected it and even though it hit #1 on the country chart, it alienated country audiences and she had to wait another 5 years before having a final top 10 hit on the country chart in 1990.

Anne has 4 Grammy Awards, 3 of which are for Best Country Vocal - Female, for "A Love Song," "Could I Have This Dance," and "A Little Good News."
"A Little Good News" is probably her most enduring country hit that was really embraced by the country music community -- it also won Single of the Year from the Country Music Association Awards, and the album it came from, also title A Little Good News, won Album of the Year -- the first time a female singer won that award.

Speaking of Anne Murray and Now and Forever (You and Me) the video is a scream. Anne brought so much 80s realness to this video - the hot pink "businesslady" power suit, the giant fur coat and then for the finale the sequined minidress. Spiky hair and pink lipstick, too! Her "acting" in the first half is a scream. Love it!

I may have told this story before, but here goes:
In the early 90s, I worked at Disney World in Florida; a notice went up that Anne Murray would be taping a Christmas special (it was August) with Patti LaBelle as her guest in front of Cinderella's Castle after the Magic Kingdom closed one night and they invited cast members to attend with a guest. I brought my lesbian sister who had introduced me to Anne Murray a decade earlier (yep, Mom and Dad had a gay son and a lesbian daughter!). Anyway, we showed up that night and the audience was a mix of country music fans, lesbians, and black gay men. Anne and Patti performed a medley of their hits; because it was being taped, they did the medley multiple times -- in between one taping, Anne went to the back part of the stage to touch up her make-up while Patti chatted with the audience; a black man shouted "I do you in my show! I do you my show!" Patti, with all the glorious shade one can imagine, turned to Anne and said over the mic, "Do you hear that, Anne? He does me in his show!" Anne shot daggers from her eyes across the stage, because I doubt anybody ever did her in their show. Patti then gifted the drag queen with items from her own makeup case.

Whenever I hear her name, I think of 2 things: She said her favorite memory of one year was when Pres. George H. W. Bush came to a country music award show. And her smugly recounting about how her doctor was amazed that she didn't cuss when coming out of the drugs after her car accident.

R143 Having a President attend the CMA awards was a major event in Country Music. Country musicians had always been outsiders even in Nashville. Old line Nashvillians has never liked that the "Athens of the South," is now considered Hillbilly Hollywood. Minnie Pearl was the bridge between the two. The parties she held in her mansion, next door to the governor, was where Country Music stars and the Nashville establishment first mingled in peace. So having the ultimate symbol of the establishment, the President of the United States, gracing their most prestigious awards show, I'm sure made 99% of the country stars very proud that night. Because it said "we are respectable."

Here here r74/r75 and r86, putting respect on the name and output of the magnificent Emmylou. My personal country favorite, even if she is actually more LA alt-country by way of the East Coast folk scene.
r87 she had no work done, that's all her. Check out her earliest photos, just starting out. That's her face and bone structure. She's always been so tiny, she's put on a little bit of weight as she's aged and it actually filled out her gamine face a bit so maybe seemed like she did something.

Ok r147 could you be specific as to what you think that is? I've been a fan of many years and see nothing. She's always had a remarkable profile and face.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | May 6, 2022 6:36 AM |
R149 I love Emmylou and she has always been gorgeous and she has also had a couple of facelifts, upper/lower eyes, possibly nose, plus the standard peels, filters and facial paralytics.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | May 6, 2022 7:16 AM |
Gotta disagree. I'll go with the peel and filters, and possible Botox (showbiz y'all). But I see no evidence of any lift or eye work, have seen no before or after photos to back this. Her nose is identical to what it was in her 20s, she's always had a very tiny delicate nose.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | May 6, 2022 4:22 PM |
Emmylou today. She looks her age, I don't see evidence of a face or neck lift here.
I think she took good enough care of her skin and used sunblock from early on, to keep it decent for now.

Back when Emmylou, Dolly & Linda were making the interview circuit for the 2nd Trio album this particular interviewer made a reference to how good all three women looked. Dolly made a remark about thanks to her doctor in Colorado, then Emmylou made a funny remark about her 2nd facelift. Linda said nothing. Of course she's always looked very natural at every stage of her life. Dolly has consistently looked like cartoon, but Emmylou has at times appeared to look very refreshed in comparison to prior photos. I totally believe her facelift quip was a little more honest than a quip.

by Anonymous | reply 158 | May 7, 2022 1:10 AM |
R158 The Grammys were considered elite and prestigious from the start, because they focused, in the beginning, on acceptable music for the middle classes. Country(hillbilly) and R&B(race records) has had to fight for every little bit of respect they have accumulated.
