Has your Credit or Debit card ever been declined in a very public spectacle?

I was trying to use my debit card at the grocery store the other day, and because I had made a few large purchases the day before, my bank froze my card due to "suspicious activity."

Well my card got declined, and I didn't have any cash or credit cards with me either.

I was mortified, and also quite furious.

I called that fucking bank and closed my account, screaming at them "If I can't use my fucking card when I need it, then what's the use of even having the fucking card???!!!!"

This new security bullshit is fucking aggravating, because it wasn't the first time this has happened.

Are there any cards available, that you can turn off all these extra security precautions completely?

Otherwise, I'm just going to carry cash every where.

Not buying it.

by Anonymousreply 1April 25, 2022 12:51 AM

That's exactly what the cashier's stare felt like, R1.

by Anonymousreply 2April 25, 2022 12:53 AM

Yep. I used to be a little mortified and try to mumble stuff- didn't matter if I had tons of money in my account and it was declined because I was at the grocery store which the CC thought was suspicious- or if I had no money and had hoped the charge would go by though the skin of my teeth, the shame is the same. But of course I would replay that scene from Terms of Endearment "She doesn't have enough MONEY!" and start laughing. Really. I don't think many of the annoyed people in line got it- but I would say "She doesn't have enough Money!" and laugh. What else can you do?

by Anonymousreply 3April 25, 2022 12:53 AM

My bank sends me a text to ask if I am making the purchase. Press Yes and it will go through.

Or a quick call to the bank will suffice. They use voice recognition to ensure that it is you.

by Anonymousreply 4April 25, 2022 12:56 AM

OP, if you were just able to come off your high horse and use self check-out, this scene from your high school drama dept days (as a set painter, mind you) wouldn't have happened.

by Anonymousreply 5April 25, 2022 12:56 AM

OP sounds like a BPD cunt/bunny boiler.

by Anonymousreply 6April 25, 2022 12:57 AM

I remember that happening to me and i told my financial institution to "turn all of that protections shit off!"

by Anonymousreply 7April 25, 2022 12:59 AM

[quote] My bank sends me a text to ask if I am making the purchase. Press Yes and it will go through.

What bank? I think I'll change over.

[quote] Or a quick call to the bank will suffice.

It was about 9 pm and I got a call center. They were absolutely NO help.

[quote] I remember that happening to me and i told my financial institution to "turn all of that protections shit off!"

I called them the next day to say exactly that, and they said "I'm sorry we can't do that." That's when I lost it on the fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 8April 25, 2022 1:01 AM

When I travel internationally for work, it happens unless I remembered to alert my bank.

Better to have a security feature slow down an authorized transaction than for shitty security to enable an unauthorized transaction.

by Anonymousreply 9April 25, 2022 1:03 AM

Better to have a security feature slow down an authorized transaction than for shitty security to enable an unauthorized transaction.

It's our money.

It's our account,

We should have ALL the say, when it comes to OUR money.

by Anonymousreply 10April 25, 2022 1:07 AM

I was once at a 3 Michelin Star restaurant, and used a brand new bank card to pay at the end. I wasn’t quite sure what the PIN was (after several glasses of wine), and the tab was nearly 450€! I entered the PIN wrong twice and the waiter seemed to be getting as nervous as me. Fortunately, I managed to get it on the third try.

by Anonymousreply 11April 25, 2022 1:07 AM

I do have a $2500 daily limit on my debit. Amex takes care of the rest

by Anonymousreply 12April 25, 2022 1:08 AM

If that’s what you want, r10, then keep it in the sock drawer.

But don’t put your money in a place for safekeeping and then bitch about the “safe” part of “safekeeping”.

by Anonymousreply 13April 25, 2022 1:12 AM

[quote] I do have a $2500 daily limit on my debit. Amex takes care of the rest

What are you not comprehending here?

I HAD the money in my checking debit account. This was MY MONEY, and NOT credit.

All because I had made a $150 purchase earlier in the day, which they deemed to be "suspicious."

Banks have become very fucking HEAVY HANDED with MY MONEY, and I've fucking had it with them.

If you are going to restrict MY OWN MONEY from me, then you will LOSE the privilege of handling my money.

I'd rather keep it in a safe at home, than lose access to it, you goddamned fucking thieves.

by Anonymousreply 14April 25, 2022 1:13 AM

yes, this did happen to me last week. I went to the store and was paying at self check out and my pin number refused to work. I was so pissed i had to leave all my groceries there. It was the weekend so the bank was closed. I called on Monday and they were having "service issues" over the weekend. Whatever that means.

by Anonymousreply 15April 25, 2022 1:16 AM

I bank with Capital One. Have a checking account and one CC with them. There have been "suspicious activity" flags in the past. One I remember was an Onlyfans subscription. But when that happens, the bank sends an email asking you to confirm the purchase if it's not fraud. And then, you try again. It is tedious but at least, you don't have to call their customer service. I'm sure you can do more to ease the protection settings but I haven't tried it yet.

by Anonymousreply 16April 25, 2022 1:18 AM

Happens frequently at my car dealership. I tell the customer to take their time and call their bank and let them know they are making a car purchase. It gets cleared in 10 min at most

by Anonymousreply 17April 25, 2022 1:20 AM

R17 hit the nail on the head. People get flustered and then do as OP did and lash out. Just call the bank to reset and all will be well in a few minutes.

by Anonymousreply 18April 25, 2022 1:26 AM

I've had the opposite happen to me with Chipotle. The location near me won't accept cash any more.

I say this as someone who got scammed at a McDonald's when using my debit card. The cashier AND the fucking manager screwed me over. The bitch ass cashier over charged me, instead of ringing up my order as a combo meal, she rang up each item separately - and not to sound like a full on Karen, I did ask to speak to the manager to get it straightened out, and the fucking bitch ass manager not only didn't refund me the difference, she charged my card two more times.

It just pissed me off thinking that they were routinely doing shit like this on purpose, and how easily that could be overlooked if you were ordering for several people.

by Anonymousreply 19April 25, 2022 3:00 AM

Years ago but I was very young so no one judged me too badly. However, a self checkout scanner recently falsely accused me of stealing. I scanned ( or thought I did) a bag of oranges and then placed them in the bagging area. The next thing I know a robotic voice loudly demands that I PLEASE REMOVE UNSCANNED ITEM FROM THE BAGGING AREA. There was a line behind me and I could feel their judgemental stares!

by Anonymousreply 20April 25, 2022 3:12 AM

Sorry miss, but I have troubles of my own.

by Anonymousreply 21April 25, 2022 3:14 AM

This is what I do in those situations.

I don't care about the problems of whoever-this-is who thinks DL is his personal LiveJournal.

by Anonymousreply 24April 25, 2022 3:22 AM

It happens to me too many times. It matters not that I call and tell the bank I'm traveling, it happens over and over. I hate it.

by Anonymousreply 25April 25, 2022 3:26 AM

R22's link just makes me wonder whatever happened to lil Dingleberry Fox.

by Anonymousreply 26April 25, 2022 3:28 AM

Do they freeze your debit card? I thought they only decline if you run out of cash in your account. I NEVER use debit. it's a terrible idea. I've had a couple of online transactions not go thru with my credit card coz I was buying something in Europe so they flagged that. they sent an email asking if that was me etc. I managed to clear it up and it went thru the next time.

by Anonymousreply 27April 25, 2022 3:30 AM

R14, are you retarded? If I have $50,000 in my checking account- NOTHING to due with credit, my daily transaction limit is $2500 on my debit card.

On the rare times that has happened, I use Amex and pay the bill when it comes.

by Anonymousreply 28April 25, 2022 3:35 AM

Haha r22! I was about to post as Debra Winger's snotty little kid and say "You don't have enough MONEY??!!"

But only on DL would someone else have taken care of it first.

Well done.

by Anonymousreply 29April 25, 2022 3:37 AM

if a bank does this to you then CHANGE YOUR FUCKING BANKS, YOU FAT WHORES.

by Anonymousreply 30April 25, 2022 3:45 AM

In Palm Springs you cry out 'How very dare you. I've got nearly 2 million in this account alone!'

by Anonymousreply 31April 25, 2022 3:47 AM

No. Sounds like an issue for the struggling classes. Couldn't you just pull out a different card, anyway?

by Anonymousreply 32April 25, 2022 3:47 AM

I've had this happen a couple of times. A few weeks ago at Burger King for $8.00. I called Capital One and they said it wasa security problem and they turned off the hold. Not public, but when I moved last year and entered my card info into an app ordering food, it would decline because the billing zip code didn't match, even though I had changed it online.

I went to check out once and was inexplicably declined. Turns out my card had expired and I hadn't realized the new one was in a stack of unopened mail. At the time I was super busy and hardly ever home to keep up on that stuff. Lesson learned.

by Anonymousreply 36April 25, 2022 4:36 AM

OP leaving her cards at home sounds like S H E is the mentally deficient one.

We live in an automated society and have to be prepared for things like this.

by Anonymousreply 37April 25, 2022 4:47 AM

Lol. OP got OWNED and it couldn’t have happened to a bigger LOSER. OP lashes out at EVERYONE and likes to emphasize certain WORDS in posts.

by Anonymousreply 38April 25, 2022 4:56 AM

Not a HUGE spectacle but it happened 2 weeks ago. I had to pay something major and knew I have very little in my account (I was expecting to get paid my salary later that afternoon) but I had less than I thought and it was rejected. When they said that I checked my online banking and saw I had less than I thought and I opted for a less expensive lunch. mildly embarrassing but I am not one to hyperventilate and panic because of what some complete strangers might think.

by Anonymousreply 39April 25, 2022 4:58 AM

Not declined, but stolen/cancelled. Two credit cards and my debit card. Credit card company called me, asking whether I'd made online purchases at a clothing store in Perugia, Italy. I said "Not lately". They informed me that someone had made unauthorized use of my credit card (to the tune of 6,500 fucking Euro!), my credit/debit cards were cancelled and that I'd be receive new ones in 7-10 days. Royal pain in the ass paying bills/purchases in cash until the new cards arrived.

by Anonymousreply 40April 25, 2022 5:10 AM

R38 is such a fucking LOSER.

And a stalker.

Clearly, I hit a nerve with that loser cunt. Now she's following me around and harassing me.

What a LOSER.

No thanks, you stupid pretentious cunt.

by Anonymousreply 44April 25, 2022 5:41 AM

That’s it R41, stamp your foot and hold your breath!

And don’t forget to CAPITALIZE words to make your point.

by Anonymousreply 45April 25, 2022 6:01 AM

OP deserves what he got, and worse. Fucking Karen.

by Anonymousreply 46April 25, 2022 6:29 AM

I once completely blanked and couldn't remember my pin at a supermarket with a line behind me. That was embarrassing. My purchases had to be put aside, clerk had to fumble with her cash register and I had to go to the bank to withdraw the money at the desk and then go back to the supermarket. Thank God, I didn't buy anything that needed to be kept cold that day.

Another time I was on holiday and made some purchases with my credit card and reached a limit that I didn't know existed. I had to call the credit card company to explain to them that I am indeed on holiday and need to make further purchases.

by Anonymousreply 47April 25, 2022 7:29 AM

I was shopping at a Kroger (Fred Meyer) in Renton, WA in November 1995. My credit card was declined. The manager of the store came charging at me in his white trash manager I'm So Important anaemic way, and HE made a scene about it. I mean, this NOBODY made a SCENE while I stood there silently, watching his one sided Wild West Showdown. As I recall, he made me give him the actual card, wh. I think is illegal. But I was so blindsided by his little performance. Nobody asked if I wanted to use another method of payement (the total was under $25.00).

I haven't thought about this for years. I wasn't embarrassed as much as taken aback. He probably went home and retold the story to his wife and kids for days.

I would've handled it differently now. I would've actually said something to his face and degraded him.

I had a music teacher in the fifth grade who once went ballistic in front of my class because I didn't show up to chorus practice. My teacher (Gregory Pisani, anybody from Hicksville reading this) calmed him down and very politely told him to take it down a thousand. That's the way this manager creature behaved. I mean, I wasn't on the Ten Most Wanted List. Yet.

by Anonymousreply 48April 25, 2022 8:03 AM

I always carry a couple loose checks in my wallet next to the bills in case I have card problems.

by Anonymousreply 49April 25, 2022 8:47 AM

That's crazy, R48.

I don't understand why people behave that way.

by Anonymousreply 50April 25, 2022 12:00 PM

So, you yelled at a human that had ZERO to do with this?

by Anonymousreply 51April 25, 2022 1:06 PM

[quote]When I travel internationally for work, it happens unless I remembered to alert my bank.

That used to happen often with me even though I did remember to alert the banks.

I think it was Citicard that I would have to call and tell them again, and they simply advised me that it could happen repeatedly.

Evidently the alert triggers are more sophisticated now. I live in Europe but use U.S. cards accounts for most transactions. The issuing banks don't ask for travel notifications any longer, relying instead, they say, on card usage patterns. I haven't had a problem in the past 5 years or so except very rarely with some primitive card purchase verification system when buying something online: the fact of a billing address in one country and a residence in another trips them up, the merchant's issue not my bank.

by Anonymousreply 52April 25, 2022 1:21 PM

[quote] Evidently the alert triggers are more sophisticated now.

Evidently, the alert triggers are more fucking annoying now.

There, I fixed it for you.

Banks are basically telling us where and when we can spend our own money now.

by Anonymousreply 53April 25, 2022 4:31 PM

[quote]you will LOSE the privilege of handling my money.

I'm sure they wept all the way to the bank. Oh wait, they ARE the bank. You sound insufferable...I'm sure customer service had a party as they closed your account. OP will now become that eldergay who pulls bills and change out of her little change purse while everyone in line glares at her.

by Anonymousreply 54April 25, 2022 4:43 PM

I was making a short distance move, about 10 mines, all my stuff was on the truck at the new house and the movers informed me that my CC had been declined, I just used another card. A good reason to have more than one card.

by Anonymousreply 55April 25, 2022 5:01 PM

I have three crisp new $300.00 bills folded in a "secret" compartment in my wallet for just such an occasion.........now if I just don't lose my wallet.........

by Anonymousreply 56April 25, 2022 5:05 PM

It is irresponsible to do anything these days with only one card on you, and maybe a $20 as well.

by Anonymousreply 57April 25, 2022 5:12 PM

Who shops for their own groceries anyway??? How low class can you guys/gays be?

by Anonymousreply 58April 25, 2022 5:32 PM

^^^^3 crisp new $100.00 bills.........sorry........

by Anonymousreply 59April 25, 2022 5:52 PM

Agree, I always keep $500 cash in the house. We had an electric problem a few years ago and everything was shut down for almost a day. No ATM, gas etc. This was CA.

by Anonymousreply 60April 25, 2022 5:59 PM

I believe complete shutdown of the internet will be far more destructive than a bomb to disrupt a nation's economy. I don't mean for a day. Think about a week without it. Who has enough cash lying around? I don't have apocalyptic greetings cards, but I can say I'm glad I no longer use zoloft or klonopin. In the event of a natural disaster what would I do if I was due for a refill and it wasn't available?

The thing about using a debit card for transactions is you can see where the money went.

by Anonymousreply 61April 25, 2022 6:13 PM

I'm actually looking forward to it, R61.

Everyone will be on a level playing field.

This world has become too dependent upon technology.

And truthfully, 1%ers are the main ones who benefit from it.

by Anonymousreply 62April 25, 2022 7:20 PM

OP—you said this happened to your before. Didn’t you learn your lesson? Before screaming at total strangers, bring extra card(s) with you and/or cash. Check what you have available to spend BEFORE you go to the cashier at checkout.

You sound like a dolt and a bully. As some poster said above, I bet that when your bank closed your account, they were relieved to be rid of you.

by Anonymousreply 63April 25, 2022 7:37 PM

R43 R44 - That isn't accepted at a surprisingly large number of places.

I remember my debit card not working at an ATM, and when I called the small bank it was attached to, the clerk said, 'Yes, we have 68,000 accounts showing negative balances right now', which was, um, every last one of their checking accounts.

by Anonymousreply 64April 25, 2022 7:47 PM

You gals are slipping. This is not a very public spectacle. I was gayling High School shop bottom at Marshalls in the 1970s. What happened when a card sale wouldn't "go through" back in those analog times? Anyone remember? A very violent public spectacle. I'll wait and then reveal if nobody chips in. I'm sure some of you remember.

by Anonymousreply 69April 25, 2022 10:25 PM

Okay, so we put our money in banks.

We PAY these banks fees to keep our money.

And then when we actually NEED our money, the banks tell us we can't use it.

Does anyone else think this is entirely fucked up????

by Anonymousreply 70April 25, 2022 10:31 PM

A few times over the years.

I know carry a minimum of 4 credit cards before walking out the door.

Funnily enough, Wells Fargo put a hold on my credit card after I charged my yearly DL $20 fee. I had also just paid for a year of Paramount+ and AppleTV, so I don't think it was just DL. They let the charge go through, but I had to text back before any further charges would go through. Took ... maybe 5 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 71April 25, 2022 11:03 PM

Las Vegas. BOH and Chase shut my credit cards down to all LV charges as precaution. Needed to call both banks for turn on. Minor inconvenience but quite a surprise at Wynn check in.
