Her performance in Stepping Out was legendary.
The nomination for Bette Midler's ridiculous performance in For The Boys should have gone to Liza. She would have gained momentum and won the gold.

We felt it was just too soon to forgiver her for "Rent-a-Cop."
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 24, 2022 5:24 AM |
I wonder if during this interview she could have even dreamed of one day giving such an Oscar-deseriving performance?

Warren Beatty was pushing his new wife Annette Bening for lead in Bugsy. The film hasn't aged well, but the AMPAS showered it with noms and she was arguably one of the best elements of the film (along with the costume/production design that glorious lighting, and a few of James Toback's zingers [i.e. "Why don't you go jerk yourself a soda?" which Bening delivered]). She got nominated by the Chicago critics and made it into the Drama Globe pool with the rest of the Oscar nominees sans Midler (who won in Comedy). I think Annette Bening would have gotten that fifth nomination if For the Boys was removed from the equation.
Midler didn't beat anyone competitive, so her win didn't have any extra value. The other nominees included Ellen Barkin in the poorly received Switch; Michelle Pfeiffer in the understated Frankie and Johnny; Kathy Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes (who was great, but more part of a female ensemble and had already just received Oscar glory the previous year); and I don't think--though fantastic--Angelica Huston had much chance winning the Globe as Morticia Addams back in 1991 (though, they did nominate her again two years later for the same role). They probably viewed Huston as "respectable filler" (even though, again, she was fantastic and would have been worthy of the win). But had any of those other ladies won, they would have had a tough time breaking into main competition (maybe Bates might have?). Midler's Globe win fueled her campaign and got her to squeeze into the Oscar race weeks later when nominations were announced. In some ways, Bening was snubbed.
That being said, had Bening been campaigned in supporting, there's a good chance she'd have at least one Oscar by now. Her Virginia Hill is a really smashing performance, and considered the nomination count (10), the key categories it got in (Picture, Director, Screenplay, multiple acting), and how great Bening was, I think there's an argument to be made she would have beat Mercedes Ruehl (who was also good).
I'm not sure how being "a supporting Oscar winner" would have impacted her career. It was pretty challenging being a lead actress in the 1990s. The roles just weren't that numerous. And, at that point, she had already dropped out of Batman Returns due to pregnancy. Her return to film after that was Love Affair, which she would have gotten cast in anyway, due to Beatty's involvement (if it went forward). The only 1990s film where she drove the plot (or, was the true lead) was In Dreams years later (which was unfortunately a mess).

I think this is the film that destroyed her hips and knees. She worked so hard, and few years later had to get new hips. But it still left her wheelchair-bound in the end.

Stepping Out isn't bad, but not Oscar-worthy. Andrea Martin and Shelley Winters also are good in it.

Miss Minnelli is now rolling out, with my assistance.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 25, 2022 12:57 AM |
Bette couldn't compete with Jodie, Susan and Geena. If For the Boys were released in 1992, she would have stood a better chance of getting the oscar. 1992 was one of the weakest Best Actress oscar races on record.
Liza thought Shelley Winters would get an oscar nomination for Stepping Out. I believe she said this on either Donahue or Joan Rivers.

I remember that Liza went on every talk show she could to promote Stepping Out and they always showed the same clip from the movie - the clip was so bad and indicative of the entire movie which turned out to be a huge bomb and possibly the low point of her movie career. An Oscar???!!!

I believe she hawked the movie on every talk show (02:05). Though I get the feeling that the film didn't turn out quite the way she'd hoped- a little too "TV movie".

Minnelli should have been nominated for Arthur. Dudley Moore and John Gielgud got the acclaim and awards, but Liza was the glue that held it all together.
And I go back and forth on New York, New York. A flawed masterpice.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 25, 2022 9:52 PM |
I dunno, R52, because it would have been in the SUPPORTING category.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 25, 2022 11:42 PM |
Who would you knock out of supporting actress that year to give Liza a spot? It was a pretty solid year in that category. Maybe Melinda Dillon?

I would have campaigned harder for a Best Actress nod in the reboot, but I had church to attend.

I love the idea of Liza Minnelli making Oscar predictions about Shelley Winters on the Donahue show.
These things don’t happen anymore. Say what you will about Liza, but had magic!
